Physical Therapy Management Of A Patient After A Subacromial Decompression With Acromioplasty And Bursectomy: A Case Report, Brianne Landholt
Physical Therapy Management Of A Patient After A Subacromial Decompression With Acromioplasty And Bursectomy: A Case Report, Brianne Landholt
Case Report Posters
Background: Subacromial impingement results from repetitive trauma to structures underneath the subacromial arch which can lead to: A decrease in the subacromial space, impingement of the soft tissue, a decrease in functional abilities. Conservative treatment can include: Physical therapy, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), corticosteriod injections, surgical option includes a subacromial decompression (SAD). There is conflicting evidence on the benefits of surgery. Literature is lacking supportive evidence of SAD without RTC repair or performing SAD with both an acromioplasty and bursectomy. Purpose: The purpose of this case report was to investigate the functional outcomes of a patient after SAD with an …

Physical Therapy Management Of A Manual Laborer With Chronic Rotator Cuff Tendinopathy: A Case Report, Samuel Lasher
Case Report Papers
Background and Purpose: Rotator cuff tendinopathy (RCT) is a chronic tendon injury that can have significant impact on an individual’s occupation, recreation and personal life. Currently there is a paucity of information detailing physical therapy (PT) interventions for individuals with RCT, who must continue working. The purpose of this case report was to report a clinical experience detailing the PT management of a patient with RCT, who secondary to occupational obligations must continue to participate in activities harmful to her condition. Case Description: The patient was a 44 year-old, female, who worked as a manual laborer. She was diagnosed with …
Physical Therapy Management Of A Patient With Stroke Utilizing Muscular Facilitation Techniques In A Skilled Nursing Facility: A Case Report, Erin Bayne
Case Report Papers
Background and Purpose: Stroke is the leading cause of long term disability in the United States. Hemiparesis is an impairment following stroke, however trunk musculature asymmetry is also common and is often overlooked when assessing a patient’s muscular control. Trunk musculature is an essential link between the upper and lower extremities during activities of daily living and impairments in trunk musculature can result in decreased safety and balance. The purpose of this case report is to provide the framework for treatment and an overview of the care plan for a patient following stroke, with special attention to trunk musculature facilitation. …

The Principle Of Reciprocity In Hospitality Contexts: The Relationship Between Tipping Behavior And Food Servers’ Approaches To Handling Leftovers, John S. Seiter, Harry Weger
Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications
Based on the norm of reciprocity, this study hypothesized that food servers would earn higher tips when they boxed customers’ leftovers compared to having customers box leftovers themselves. In addition, the effect of writing messages (i.e., the date and/or customer’s name) on boxes of leftovers was explored. Two female food servers waited on 608 diners and boxed or did not box leftovers, and wrote or did not write messages on boxes. The hypothesis was supported. However, writing messages was not associated with tipping behavior.

Physical Therapy Management Of A Manual Laborer With Chronic Rotator Cuff Tendinopathy: A Case Report, Samuel Lasher
Case Report Posters
Background: Tendinopathy is characterized by tendon thickening, localized pain and chronic degeneration reflective of failed healing. 38% of manual laborers who participate in daily moderate to heavy lifting will experience Rotator Cuff Tendinopathy(RCT). There is a lack of research investigating the PT management of manual laborers who have RCT, but must continue to participate in harmful activities to fulfill occupational responsibilities. Purpose: The purpose of this case report was to describe the PT management of a patient with rotator cuff tendinopathy who, due to work requirements continued to participate in activities detrimental to the health of the supraspinatus and function …
Exploring The Intersection Between Folk And Conventional Medicine In Albany, Kentucky, Chloe J. Brown
Exploring The Intersection Between Folk And Conventional Medicine In Albany, Kentucky, Chloe J. Brown
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Approximately 60% of patients surveyed (in Albany, KY) practice folk medicine, which suggests that a significant segment of the population may practice folk medicine. Patients typically use folk medical treatments concurrently with conventional medical treatments; while the interaction of these treatments is generally innocuous or positive, folk medical treatments can sometimes be harmful, lead to negative interactions with other drugs prescribed by a conventional medical professional. Since folk medicine and conventional medicine frequently interact, it is important for medical professionals to be aware of and address folk medical practices in a conventional medical environment. In order to better address folk …

Introduction: Hip fractures are a leading cause of mortality and disability worldwide, and the number of hip fractures is expected to rise to over 6 million per year by 2050. The optimal approach for the surgical management of displaced femoral neck fractures remains unknown. Current evidence suggests the use of arthroplasty; however, there is lack of evidence regarding whether patients with displaced femoral neck fractures experience better outcomes with total hip arthroplasty (THA) or hemiarthroplasty (HA). The HEALTH trial compares outcomes following THA versus HA in patients 50 years of age or older with displaced femoral neck fractures.

An Apartment Of One’S Own: Personal Initiative And Private Ownership In Frances Ha, Anna Bowles
An Apartment Of One’S Own: Personal Initiative And Private Ownership In Frances Ha, Anna Bowles
Cinesthesia
In “Ideology, Genre, Auteur,” Robin Wood says that by approaching film through the framework of ideological theory, we can become sensitized to “the opposing pulls, the tensions, of one’s world (593).” Even in a film that is not explicitly political, these tensions can find expression. In Frances Ha (Baumbach 2012), a young woman struggles to chase her dream while also staying afloat in the harsh landscape of New York City. Until near the end of the film, it seems that Frances might float forever. The supports that Americans used to take for granted are no longer apparent. Having lost her …

Graduate Teaching Assistants: Responding To The Challenges Of Internationalisation, Jennie Winter, Rebecca Turner, Sharon Gedye, Patricia Nash, Vivien Grant
Plymouth Institute of Education
The last decade has seen intensification in moves to professionalise the practice of university teaching, including graduate teaching assistants (GTAs). It has also seen significant growth in terms of the internationalisation of the postgraduate student body and changing expectations around doctoral training. These transformations have implications for the construction, delivery, and management of educational training for this group, yet little contemporary research exists investigating the adaptability of academic development and institutions to such change. This paper reports empirical research exploring these issues using a UK-based case study. The research investigated the international doctoral students’ experience of a teaching course and …
Changes In Coral Community Composition At Devil's Crown, Galapagos Islands, Ecuador: A 7,700 Year Perspective, Katharine Jane Hendrickson
Changes In Coral Community Composition At Devil's Crown, Galapagos Islands, Ecuador: A 7,700 Year Perspective, Katharine Jane Hendrickson
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
Coral mortality caused by El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) activity and its related disturbances has been researched throughout the Eastern Pacific. In the past three decades, disturbances related to the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) have been shown to influence coral growth in the Eastern Pacific. In the Galápagos Islands, Ecuador, more than 97% of corals experienced mortality after the severe 1982-1983 ENSO episode. However, two of the most dominant coral species found in a coral community adjacent to Devil’s Crown; Psammocora stellata and Diaseris distorta survived this severe ENSO event. By reconstructing sediment cores of the coral community, this study assessed …
The Role Of Violence Within And Across Self-Identified Gang Youth, J. Michael Vecchio
The Role Of Violence Within And Across Self-Identified Gang Youth, J. Michael Vecchio
Dissertations
Whether actual (i.e., direct and vicarious victimization) or anticipated (i.e., fear of crime and perceived risk of victimization) violence, gang youth commonly discuss violence in terms of having an important role in both their gang experiences and daily lives. In particular, violence can play an important role within the specific stages of the gang experience – 1) joining, 2) active membership, and 3) leaving. This includes the importance of protection from violence as a common motivator for joining, the utility of violence as a means of building cohesion between active gang members, as well as the importance of exposure to …
Family-Of-Origin Characteristics Of Men Who Engage Regularly In Sexually Addictive Behavior, Mark Stephen Pfuetze
Family-Of-Origin Characteristics Of Men Who Engage Regularly In Sexually Addictive Behavior, Mark Stephen Pfuetze
Dissertations
The present study surveyed men to assess whether any correlations existed between a man’s sexually addictive behavior and how his family-of-origin addressed sexuality along with demographic factors. A total of 374 male participants (18 years or older) provided complete data sets via the online survey located on SurveyMonkey. The main research question for this study was as follows: Is there a relationship between demographic variables or family factors: (a) negative attitudes and communication about sexuality in one’s family-of-origin, (b) exposure to sexual stimuli in one’s family-of-origin, and (c) open sexual discussion in one’s family-of-origin, and sexual addiction. All three of …

An Evidence-Based Approach To A Replacement Hospital Training Curriculum, Mark D. Beck
An Evidence-Based Approach To A Replacement Hospital Training Curriculum, Mark D. Beck
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Creation of a training and educational curriculum for a new or replacement facility is daunting in its own right, but without a repository of organizational knowledge cataloging the transfer of tacit to explicit knowledge from the organizations previous library of facility openings, the task becomes Herculean, with as many tasks and cast of characters as the original myths. Navigating the shoals, eddies and tides of the various aspects of this project revealed the need for a comprehensive knowledge management solution to training that is coupled with healthcare design principles and initiatives. This purpose of the DNP project is about the …

Moral Anxiety, Mortal Terror: Considering Spielberg, Post-9/11, Jake T. Bart
Cinesthesia
In the wake of 9/11, a defining moment in the young 21st century, Spielberg’s thematic concerns undergo a marked evolution. As film historian Joseph McBride noted, “(n)o other American artist confronted the key events of the first decade of the century with such sustained and ambitious treatment” (450). Together, Spielberg’s War of the Worlds (2005), Munich (2005), and Minority Report (2002) create an informal trilogy, each exploring a different facet of American shock and anxiety in the War on Terror era.

Lack Of Medicaid Funding For Occupational Therapy Serving The Autism Spectrum Disorder Population Ages 0-5 Years, Mary O'Donohue
Lack Of Medicaid Funding For Occupational Therapy Serving The Autism Spectrum Disorder Population Ages 0-5 Years, Mary O'Donohue
Honors Theses
The prevalence of autism in the United States is currently 1 in 68 children (Autism Alliance of Michigan, 2014). This is considered an epidemic. There are a variety of treatments available in the state of Michigan for children with autism, such as occupational therapy, speech therapy, physical therapy, and applied behavior analysis (ABA). Effective April 1st, 2013, Michigan increased their funding cap for ABA therapy for treating children with autism. However, there is a lack of knowledge within the community and amongst professionals in regards to the critical treatment occupational therapy practitioners provide and as a result, there …
Identifying Professional Development Opportunities For Remote Healthcare Interpreters On A Shared Network, Suzanne M. Couture
Identifying Professional Development Opportunities For Remote Healthcare Interpreters On A Shared Network, Suzanne M. Couture
Instructional Design Capstones Collection
Many healthcare organizations are faced with the challenge of complying with an unfunded mandate to provide language services free of charge to individuals with limited English proficiency or those who are deaf or hard of hearing. One method of increasing efficiencies and reducing disparities for these vulnerable populations is to provide access to remote audio/video interpreters on a shared network. The Health Care Interpreter Network (HCIN) is a non-profit organization based in California that comprises more than forty member hospitals and offers service in twenty languages. To support the need for on-going professional development of HCIN’s interpreters, a front-end analysis …
A Comparison Between High-Risk And Low-Risk Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Kathryn Bradbury
A Comparison Between High-Risk And Low-Risk Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Kathryn Bradbury
Master's Theses
Due to the elevated recurrence rates in high-risk younger siblings of children with ASD, the population is frequently used to examine early ASD symptomatology. However, the representative nature of this population compared to the general population of children with ASD is unknown. Previous research also suggests that parents of children with ASD raise concerns about the development of subsequent children earlier than first-time parents or parents of typically developing children. Whether an actual discrepancy exists in the attainment of milestones in these populations has not yet been assessed. The current study proposes to compare high- and low-risk children with ASD …
