Guidelines And Best Practices For Large And Mass Tort Mdls (First Edition), Duke Law School Center For Judicial Studies
Bolch Judicial Institute Publications
Mass-tort MDLs dominate the federal civil docket, yet they present enormous challenges to transferee judges assigned to manage them. There is little official guidance and no rules specific to the management of mass-tort MDLs, often requiring the transferee judge to develop procedures out of whole cloth.
Beginning in 2013, the Bolch Judicial Institute (then the Center for Judicial Studies) sought to address this issue through a series of annual bench-bar conferences. From these conferences came the Guidelines and Best Practices for Large and Mass-Tort MDLs document, which is designed to help judges and legal practitioners understand and efficiently navigate complex …

The Coveted Souls Of Oppressed Persons, Connie L. Gibb
The Coveted Souls Of Oppressed Persons, Connie L. Gibb
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Theses and Other Student Research
Marcus Aurelius (167 A.C.E. III. 16) stated that: “[b]ody, soul, intelligence: to the body belong sensations, to the soul appetites, to the intelligence principles.” In my philosophical inquiry (my play) I argue it isn’t that simple and that the concept of soul is much like what Aristotle (1994, II, 1, 412 a 28) wrote, "The soul, therefore, is the primary act of a physical body potentially possessing life." Or, like Fincher (2007, p. 32) who wrote, “My soul is me, and I own all of my soul’s abilities and experiences…” I also discuss that the intelligence of human beings could …

The Impact Of Academic Advising On The Retention Of First-Year Students In A Gulf-Arab University, Selma Hagahmed
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This study investigated academic advising and retention in a Gulf-Arab university. Quantitative and qualitative data were gathered in order to understand how academic advising could have potentially contributed to the improvement of student retention. The focus of the study was on first-year students in the College of Business and Economics and the College of Law in a Gulf-Arab national four-year institution. The study compared the Grade Point Average (GPA) and the number of credit hours in two groups of first-year students: 1) a treatment group of students who utilized academic advising services and (2) the control group of students who …

Minelaying And The Impediment Of Passage Rights, Wolff Heintschel Von Heinegg
Minelaying And The Impediment Of Passage Rights, Wolff Heintschel Von Heinegg
International Law Studies
Since their first extensive use in the 1904–05 Russo-Japanese War naval mines have continued to pose a considerable threat to innocent shipping. States reacted by adopting the 1907 Hague Convention VIII, which has been the only international instrument on the matter to date. In view of the fact that more than 80 percent of imports and exports are shipped by sea, freedom of navigation and, in particular, transit and archipelagic sea lanes passage rights must be preserved to the greatest extent possible. The present article deals with the question of whether international rules and principles provide effective protection of international …
Bowling, Richard C. Crepeau
Bowling, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
Every few years I like to take inventory of the Bowl Games. Each football season concludes with these loss leaders for intercollegiate football teams. Almost without exception teams who have been honored with an invitation to a bowl game will lose money with the cost of bowling exceeding the payouts for bowlers. The theory is that the exposure is worth more than real budgetary dollars.

The Role Of Nurses In An Interdisciplinary Care Team Responding To Mass Fatality Disasters: Promoting Equity And Access To Care, Susan B. Hassmiller, Lavonne M. Adams, Susan Mace Weeks
General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)
The majority of individuals cared for by international relief organizations responding to multi-fatality disasters are those with limited access to care; therefore, human care inequities are frequently apparent. This presentation will focus on nurses facilitating equity and access to care for survivors of mass fatality disasters through an interdisciplinary care team model. Using a reflective practice methodology, the first presenter will describe her "lived experience" as a nurse working on an interdisciplinary care team responding to catastrophic disasters. The nurse's role in facilitating culturally sensitive care access for those most disenfranchised will be highlighted. The second presenter will describe an …

Research Brief: "The Potential For Health-Related Uses Of Mobile Phones And Internet With Homeless Veterans: Results From A Multisite Survey", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University
Institute for Veterans and Military Families
This brief is about the use of mobile phones among homeless veterans for medical appointment reminders, and other health services provided by healthcare practitioners. In policy and practice, social workers and counselors should determine whether mobile communication would benefit homeless veterans with whom they work and should identify certain barriers to mobile communication that could exist; the VA should expand its mobile notification efforts and look for programs that reduce barriers to regular access to mobile communication. Suggestions for future research include expanding the sample of homeless veterans to include those who are living on the streets or in a …

Tidy Guide – A Beginner’S Guide To An Organized Home, Katie Hollenbeck
Theses
Search for "how to organize" on the web, and you will be inundated with endless resources. Organizing information is everywhere, making the task seem intimidating. For my thesis project, I sought out to create an interactive, instructional, web-based application that would coach users on how to organize objects within a specific space. My goal was to create a unique, visual, creative solution - one that did not already exist on the web, and one that would become an important tool for users who were seeking organizing assistance and advice. Not only did I intend the application to be unique, visual, …
