Lives In Fiction: Auto/Biographies As Theoretical Narratives, Dennis S. Erasga Dec 2014

Lives In Fiction: Auto/Biographies As Theoretical Narratives, Dennis S. Erasga

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

Sociological imagination is an open invitation to theorize from the stories we tell about ourselves and others. More than self-expression, the sociological ethos of auto/biographical narration is to extend the reality of a solipsistic and exclusive existence into a common and public experience. In order to achieve this, the narrator must convert biographies into scribed realities. The narrating process, however, has unique epistemic anchorage (memory-based) and stylistic requirement (literary) that encage lived lives in a fictional genre, giving this mode of writing a unique interpretive lens that projects new visions of the social. Consequently for theorizing purposes, auto/biographies are meaning-claims …

Using Complex Skill Exercises And Their Impact On The Development Of Some Offensive Skills (15 Years)_ Basketball For Players Aged ( 14 Years), Harith Mubashir Mohammed

Modern Sport

The research focused on the idea that basketball training should closely resemble real game situations, particularly with complex offensive skills, by emphasizing multiple skills in accordance with the requirements of the game itself. The study adopted a progressive approach to compound exercises, starting from easy to difficult, and varied the exercises to include two or more skills, considering both accuracy and speed in execution. The problem of the research was the limited use of compound exercises in training youth players and the lack of progression from easy to difficult. Four speed and accuracy tests were selected for some offensive skills, …

Evolutionary Genomics And Adaptive Evolution Of The Hedgehog Gene Family (Shh, Ihh And Dhh) In Vertebrates, Joana Pereira, Warren E. Johnson, Stephen J. O'Brien, Erich D. Jarvis, Guojie Zhang, M. Thomas P. Gilbert, Vitor Vasconcelos, Agostinho Antunes

Biology Faculty Articles

The Hedgehog (Hh) gene family codes for a class of secreted proteins composed of two active domains that act as signalling molecules during embryo development, namely for the development of the nervous and skeletal systems and the formation of the testis cord. While only one Hh gene is found typically in invertebrate genomes, most vertebrates species have three (Sonic hedgehog – Shh; Indian hedgehog – Ihh; and Desert hedgehog – Dhh), each with different expression patterns and functions, which likely helped promote the increasing complexity of vertebrates and their successful diversification. In this study, we …

Modeling, Fabrication, And Characterization Of Memristors, Anas Mazady Dec 2014

Modeling, Fabrication, And Characterization Of Memristors, Anas Mazady

Doctoral Dissertations

The term “memristor” was coined by L. Chua from its two distinct functional characteristics, memory and resistor. From the symmetry argument of the circuit element and circuit variable matrix, memristor is deemed as the fourth fundamental circuit element, after resistor, capacitor, and inductor. Memristor switching and observed I-V characteristics are explained utilizing the underlying physics of the device in terms of the formation and rupture of filaments. Three different conduction mechanisms, namely - filament assisted tunneling current, bulk tunneling current and currents flowing through low and high conductivity filaments give rise to the total current in memristive systems. DC and …

The Paradox Of Immigration Politics: Revisiting The Dynamics Of Philippine Nikkeijin Labor Migration, Ron Bridget Vilog Dec 2014

The Paradox Of Immigration Politics: Revisiting The Dynamics Of Philippine Nikkeijin Labor Migration, Ron Bridget Vilog

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

Under the 1990 Immigration Control Act, nikkeijin or descendants of Japanese nationals who were born in foreign countries were granted limited rights to reside and work in Japan. Notwithstanding the contradictions of the policy framework, nikkeijin migration remains dynamic and robust. Impelled by socio-economic and cultural factors, Filipino nikkeijin have demonstrated an enduring cycle of migration, indicating socio-economic and cultural embeddedness within the host society. Thus, this paper discussed how Filipino nikkeijin acquired their nikkei recognition, initiated the migration process, and sustained massive flow despite Japan’s problematic immigration policies. Exploring the notion of Tsuda’s (1999) “structural embeddedness,” the paper highlights …

Comparing The Child-Rearing Goals Of Women In Taiwan And In Its Marriage-Based Immigrants’ Countries Of Origin, Shou-Lu Lee Dec 2014

Comparing The Child-Rearing Goals Of Women In Taiwan And In Its Marriage-Based Immigrants’ Countries Of Origin, Shou-Lu Lee

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

This study compares the child-rearing goals of women in Taiwan and in Taiwanese immigrant women’s countries of origin. The logit regression results clearly show distinct cultural variations in child-rearing goals in different countries, even when differences in socio-economic status are considered. Despite their complex historical links, Chinese women do not appear to be more similar to Taiwanese women than are Indonesian, or Vietnamese women in terms of child- rearing goals. These findings have implications for the socio-economic policies of the Taiwanese government and effective communication and instruction in schools. In addition, the findings also have implications for Asian countries affected …

Blurring Group Boundaries: The Impact Of Subgroup Threats On Global Citizenship, Stephen Reysen, Iva Katzarska-Miller, Phia S. Salter, Caroline Hirko

Cultural Encounters, Conflicts, and Resolutions

We examined the outcomes of an extinction threat (possible discontinuation of a group’s symbolic or actual existence) to one’s nation on global citizenship identification and related prosocial values. In Study 1, participants showed a drop in global citizenship identification when America was threatened (vs. absence of threat). In Study 2, participants reported lower global citizenship identification when America was threatened (vs. absence of threat) and the perception that one’s normative environment did not support a global citizen identity mediated the relationship between threat and identification. Furthermore, the threat was shown to indirectly predict lower endorsement for prosocial values and behaviors …

Elite Competition And Economic Reform In Cuba And Vietnam: A Comparative Study Of Policy Legitimation, Anthony Lawrence A. Borja Dec 2014

Elite Competition And Economic Reform In Cuba And Vietnam: A Comparative Study Of Policy Legitimation, Anthony Lawrence A. Borja

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

Cuba and Vietnam, as survivors of the Cold War entered the post-Soviet Era with a myriad of economic woes. These eventually served as incentives for these countries to implement economic reforms that bolstered not only their economic performance, but also the survival of their respective states. However, due to variations in the dynamics of elite competition in these cases, their respective reform programs differed in consistency and their outputs differed in attributes. This is especially true for Cuba and Vietnam wherein the former, initiating market reform programs as early as 1970, experienced two policy reversals during the 80s and the …

Authenticity In Constructivist Inquiry: Assessing An Elusive Construct, Patrick Shannon, Elyse Hambacher Dec 2014

Authenticity In Constructivist Inquiry: Assessing An Elusive Construct, Patrick Shannon, Elyse Hambacher

Education

Methodological rigor in constructivist inquiry is established through an assessment of trustworthiness and authenticity. Trustworthiness parallels the positivistic concepts of internal and external validity, focusing on an assessment of the inquiry process. Authenticity, however, is unique to constructivist inquiry and has no parallel in the positivistic paradigm. Authenticity involves an assessment of the meaningfulness and usefulness of interactive inquiry processes and social change that results from these processes. However, the techniques for ascertaining authenticity are in the early stages of development. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to describe a process for assessing authenticity in a constructivist inquiry. A …

Peer Review Of Teaching: Best Practices For A Non-Programmatic Approach, Jaena Alabi, William H. Weare, Jr. Dec 2014

Peer Review Of Teaching: Best Practices For A Non-Programmatic Approach, Jaena Alabi, William H. Weare, Jr.

Communications in Information Literacy

Many academic librarians who provide library instruction have never received formal training in educational theory and methods. In an effort to bridge this gap and improve the teaching skills of instruction librarians, some academic libraries have established peer review of teaching programs. Despite the recognized benefits of peer review, it may not be feasible for every library to establish such a program. In an effort to aid those who are interested in peer review, but who may not be able to participate in a formal program, the authors identify the principles of peer review that can be applied on a …
