Teacher Perceptions Of Strategies And Practices That Motivate African American Adolescent Males With Individual Education Program To Read, Shawneice Tashae Malone

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The purpose of this study was to explore teachers' perceptions of African American males with an Individual Education Program (IEP), literacy motivations to assist teachers in augmenting students' self efficacy and literacy competence. The theoretical framework was derived from the expectancy theory of motivation which places emphasis on individual perceptions and the interactions that follow as a consequence of personal expectations. The researcher used a survey to determine which strategies teachers believe to be most motivational for high school African American males receiving a special education to read. The survey included 27 motivational strategies and practices acquired from previous studies …

Learning To Give A Hoot: Open Access Workflows For Academic Librarians (Oawal), Jill Emery

Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations

Graham Stone and Jill Emery have been working to try to develop an outline of some of the best practices for managing open access workflow management in academic libraries. In March 2014, we went live with OAWAL (pronounced owl): a crowdsourced blog/wiki to develop some of these practices and learn what innovators and experts in the field of scholarly communications and open access management have been doing. Our project is international in scope and relies heavily on countries such as the UK where country mandates are driving the development of workflows and management tools. This presentation will focus on recent …

Development And Mental Health Care Services: A Case Study At Rtccd, Hanoi, Michelle Lafortune

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Vietnam’s rapid development since 1986 has had both positive and negative impacts on Vietnam’s mental health services. A health system was put into place and is expanding to overcome many challenges. Conversely, development has also brought with it new amenities and technologies that, in some cases, are being abused – one such is example is video games. As Vietnam deals with disturbing violent video game related episodes, parents and community members are searching for answers. This study project focuses on understanding the mental health care system in Vietnam and its current growth and advances. Three weeks were spent in Hanoi, …

Use Of A Dvd-Based Strength Training Program By Breast Cancer Survivors In The Home Setting, Ashley Falcon

Open Access Dissertations

Background: Breast cancer (BCa) is the most common type of cancer diagnosed among women in the United States. Advances in cancer detection and treatment have led to improved survival, and focus has shifted towards addressing the adverse physiological and psychological effects associated with BCa and its treatments. Evidence supports regular physical activity (PA) as an effective means of managing the negative side effects of BCa treatments and improving health-related quality of life (QOL). Strength training is of particular importance for BCa survivors who experience treatment-related functional limitations. Despite this fact, PA levels among BCa survivors are below those recommended for …

Exploring Fair Trade Yerba Mate Networks In Misiones, Argentina, Franklin Smith

Open Access Theses

This thesis explores the recent growth of Fair Trade yerba mate networks in Misiones, Argentina. It is a qualitative descriptive study, researching an area presently untouched by academic scholarship. The investigation first offers a historical background of production practices and labor relations within the yerba mate sector. It also examines various theoretical considerations that both problematize and support Fair Trade commodities. A commodity chain approach is used to understand the different value-adding processes that yerba mate is exposed to as it moves along nodes of harvesting, drying, milling, distribution, and consumption. Results are based on a month-long study of three …

Reach To Teach, April R. Cowles

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Multiple intelligences theory of Howard Gardner are used as a foundation of research in order to explain how educating students of all learning styles should include interdisciplinary methods and creative applications. Primary and secondary research of Howard Gardner’s theory and interdisciplinary methods, specifically the Integration Model and Broad Model approaches were completed. Two different lesson plans demonstrating how to teach students integrating two disciplines while including creativity were generated as examples of thesis. Qualitative research on creativity and motivation identified connection between the two and why interdisciplinary methods enable more possibilities of adding creativity to lessons taught. Intergenerational Service-Learning With Exercise Science Students, Mckinze R. Vowels

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Exercise science professionals often work with older adults to help maintain function and independence. Ageism may begin during undergraduate training, as most have not interacted with older adults. Intergenerational service-learning (ISL) may be a useful pedagogy to facilitate interactions with older adults. PURPOSE: To determine if exercise science students’ knowledge of older adults and ageism are significantly improved by incorporating ISL into an exercise science course. METHODS: Students (n =10) enrolled in Exercise and Aging and from two additional exercise science courses (n = 17) completed pre and post assessments of attitudes towards and knowledge of older adults. Viral Hollywood: How Social Media & Other Emerging Technologies Have Molded The Modern Moviegoing Landscape, Benjamin P. Conniff

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

There’s no denying that the rise of the internet has brought about change in the Hollywood landscape. Fans now use social media, like Facebook and Twitter, to share word-of-mouth about movies both good and bad. In a sense, anyone can use these new “spreadable media” to be a critic. I myself took it one step further and started my own film review blog. I was even published in the College Heights Herald student newspaper for over a year! In gauging my audience’s tastes in social media usage and in film, I have uncovered the fact that the hot-button marketing issues …

Community & Environmental Health Faculty Publications

Effective workplace violence (WPV) prevention programs are essential, yet challenging to implement in healthcare. The aim of this study was to identify major barriers to implementation of effective violence prevention programs. After reviewing the related literature, the authors describe their research methods and analysis and report the following seven themes as major barriers to effective implementation of workplace violence programs: a lack of action despite reporting; varying perceptions of violence; bullying; profit-driven management models; lack of management accountability; a focus on customer service; and weak social service and law enforcement approaches to mentally ill patients. The authors discuss their findings …
