Church Hospitality: A Biblical Model For Growth Based On The Seven Churches In Revelation, Gesner Noel Aug 2014

Church Hospitality: A Biblical Model For Growth Based On The Seven Churches In Revelation, Gesner Noel

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Church growth seeks both to actualize the precepts of the "Great Commission", to attract new members and sustain current congregation. One of the fundamental problems is the inability to preserve hospitality. The pertinence of hospitality to the Church originates from Scriptures that clearly exemplify Christ's deeds and teachings of hospitality. This thesis project will investigate the seven churches in Revelation and reveal factors of outstanding and inhospitable practices in relation to Church growth and hospitality. Surveys will be based on unregulated interactions among pastors. Twenty pastors across five denominations, Evangelical Lutheran, Charismatic, Pentecostal, Seven-Day Adventist, and Roman Catholic will demonstrate …

A Pre-Methodological Theology For Biblically Proper Ecclesiological Health, James Woods Aug 2014

A Pre-Methodological Theology For Biblically Proper Ecclesiological Health, James Woods

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The American church is in a dramatically noticeable decline, with many resources offering superficial remedies and solutions but rarely digging below the surface to evaluate the structural integrity of the foundation. This paper will evaluate the foundation as to how it has been altered over the last two thousand years, as well as identifying three main foundational attributes of the first century church that must be in place for the twenty-first century church to be on target biblically. The thesis will be corroborated by utilizing two different, yet related surveys administered to both pastors and congregants, as well as by …

Focusing on the major characters provides a way to tell the story in ways that engage modern listeners and allow the gospel to be heard. In the end, it is God’s story of self-giving love that brings redemption out of tragedy.

The strong attraction which Judaism held for Paul’s converts in Galatia and elsewhere is hard to explain if Israel as a whole was generally lamenting its condition.Early Jewish writings similarly give evidence of variety and nuance in Jewish self-understanding in this period.37 The Scroll of Fasting (Megillat Ta’anit), for example, marks the celebration of Hasmonean victories within Jewish life, days of celebration on which one was not to fast.

Silent Liberation: Navigating Feminist Theology Through The Christological Lens Of Mary Of Bethany, Karen M. Kiefer Jun 2014

Silent Liberation: Navigating Feminist Theology Through The Christological Lens Of Mary Of Bethany, Karen M. Kiefer

Obsculta

Standing in the midst of confusion among disparate views within feminist theology, a woman in the church can feel torn between honoring her dignity as a person and honoring her faith. She hears a cacophony of voices screaming for liberation and reform that have risen from the oppression of misogyny, omission and amputation from the Christian tradition and Scripture as the result of an androcentric church history and structure. The division among these feminist voices, ranging from reform to dismantling or vacating the Christian faith altogether, can leave a woman in the church questioning Scripture, tradition, roles, and even Jesus …

Wielding Eden: Early Modern Voices And The Appropriation Of Paradise, Adrienne Redding Jun 2014

Wielding Eden: Early Modern Voices And The Appropriation Of Paradise, Adrienne Redding

Dissertations

This research considers images of gardens and the unavoidable connections such images have to the Garden of Eden. It investigates images of gardens in early modern England, as seen in three different categories of textual artifact: popular prose publications, dramatic texts, and the resurrected poetic epic. It investigates the construction of gender, observing how Edenic iconography functions both to support and to undermine the dominant ideology’s work to naturalize and universalize gender attributes and societal roles. This iconography, dependent upon a variety of interpretations of the first three books of Genesis, has been referenced (and continues to be referenced) by …

Armenian Apocrypha Relating To Abraham, Michael E. Stone, E. Douglas Clark Jun 2014

Armenian Apocrypha Relating To Abraham, Michael E. Stone, E. Douglas Clark

BYU Studies

Over a decade ago while attending an annual meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature, I heard Professor Michael Stone mention he was working on a group of medieval Armenian texts containing traditions about the Patriarch Abraham. Having spent considerable time gathering every Abrahamic tradition I could find, I was excited at this news and asked when the work would be published. Professor Stone replied that it would not be soon. Since then, I have eagerly looked forward to this volume.

As one of Stone's many publications on Armenian apocrypha, and a sequel to two of those in particular ( …
