A Period Of Transition: Early Islamic And Umayyad Coinage, Anna Tiner Jan 2014

A Period Of Transition: Early Islamic And Umayyad Coinage, Anna Tiner

Featured Research

A study of four coins from 620 to 680 AD provides a meager yet insightful glimpse into the coinage minted by Islamic rulers during their conquest over the Holy Land and the transition of rule from the Byzantine Empire to the Islamic Caliphate. With the help of an innovative technology called Reflective Transference Image (RTI), on loan from USC, I created high-resolution images that can be adjusted with respect to light and reflectivity. Creating RTI images of the coins administers a deeper alternate perspective giving light to aspects of the coin that cannot be seen by the naked eye. Using …

Daniel As An Example Of Exceptional Cross Cultural Leadership, Debby Thomas Jan 2014

Daniel As An Example Of Exceptional Cross Cultural Leadership, Debby Thomas

Faculty Publications - College of Business

This paper presents Daniel as a prototypical model of an excellent cross-cultural Christian leader. The GLOBE project research on cross-cultural leaders is consulted and five cross cultural leadership qualities are identified based on their acceptance in all cultures studied: integrity, performance oriented, visionary, inspirational, and team builder as found in Dorfman’s research originating from the GLOBE project.1 God’s intervention in Daniel’s leadership is also considered as a significant factor in Daniel’s cross-cultural success as a leader. Exegetical analysis of Daniel 1 and 2 verifies that Daniel meets the criteria of an excellent cross-cultural leader as proposed by Dorfman. Daniel presents …

Expertise And Service: A Call To Action, Rebecca Butler Jan 2014

Expertise And Service: A Call To Action, Rebecca Butler

Library Faculty Publications

Although theological librarianship occurs most often at seminaries or graduate level theology programs, there are also librarians working with theology on an undergraduate level. In many cases, these librarians are responsible for additional subject areas and may or may not have any theological expertise or training. While the two groups do the same types of work, they are doing so in different ways. To explore these commonalities and differences, a study was conducted among undergraduate theology liaisons and those results were compared with the literature and data regarding graduate level theological librarianship. One hundred ten undergraduate librarians responded to a …

Mission At And From The Margins: Patterns, Protagonists And Perspectives, Peniel Jesudason, Rufus Rajkumar, Joseph Prabhakar Dayam, I. P. Asheervadham Jan 2014

Mission At And From The Margins: Patterns, Protagonists And Perspectives, Peniel Jesudason, Rufus Rajkumar, Joseph Prabhakar Dayam, I. P. Asheervadham

Regnum Edinburgh Centenary Series

This volume revisits the 'hi-stories' of Mission from the 'bottom up' paying critical attention to people, perspectives and patterns that have often been elided in the construction of mission history. Focusing on the mission story of Christian churches in the South Indian state of Abdhra Pradesh, where Christianity is predominantly Dalit in its composition, this collection of essays, ushers its readers to re-shape their understanding of the landscape of mission history by drawing their attention to the silences and absences within pre-dominant historical accounts.

On (Not) Fearing The Mystery Of God (Chapter 8 Of The Spirit Of Adoption: Writers On Faith, Adoption, God, And More), Melanie Springer Mock

Faculty Publications - Department of English

Just days before our trip to India, birthplace of my second son, a well-meaning relative cornered me at a family gathering. "We'll be praying for you!" she said, uttering the Christian phrase that can be, at the same moment, both cliche-riddled and completely sincere.

I chose to interpret it as sincere, needing all kinds of prayer for our journey. My husband and I were flying to India with our then six-year-old sons: Benjamin, whom we'd adopted from Vietnam as an infant, and Samuel, whom we brought home from Mumbai as a three-year-old. This was no ordinary homeland trip. My adult …

A Program Evaluation Of A Christian College Baccalaureate Program Utilizing Stufflebeam's Cipp Model, Victoria F. Hanchell

Education Dissertations and Projects

This dissertation was a program evaluation of an undergraduate program of study at a Christian institution of higher education. The college had not received a formal evaluation since the institution of their strategic planning in 2008. The program evaluation of this baccalaureate program was reviewed through the lens of the CIPP Evaluation Model (Stufflebeam, 2002). Through the CIPP Evaluation Model, the Context (C), Inputs (I), Processes (P), and Product (P) of this institution were evaluated.

Four research questions were developed to coincide with the four thematic areas of CIPP model. The four research questions were (1) Context: How were the …

Overcoming The Division: The Relationship Between The Eucharist And Social Justice, Lauren S. Murphy Jan 2014

Overcoming The Division: The Relationship Between The Eucharist And Social Justice, Lauren S. Murphy

Theology Graduate Theses

Overcoming the Division: The Relationship between the Eucharist and Social Justice explores the intimate connection between worship of God and service of neighbor. Arguing for the primacy of the Eucharist, I first outline the present problem of the separation between the Eucharist and social justice in the life of the Church and offer possible reasons for this situation. I then proceed to describe the relationship between worship and justice as understood in Scripture and the early Church, giving special attention to the Old Testament prophets, the Gospels, Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians, and John Chrysostom. This leads me …

“Go Sell Your Oil And Pay Your Debt!” Economic Life In Ancient Israel, Roger S. Nam Jan 2014

“Go Sell Your Oil And Pay Your Debt!” Economic Life In Ancient Israel, Roger S. Nam

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

Ancient Israel did not know the economic concepts of banks, insurance, tuition, profit and retirement. Other economic terms such as taxes, labor, debt and even prices were all fundamentally different in meaning. When interpreting biblical texts, we must carefully consider the different settings of modern capitalism and ancient Israel’s economy.

Exposed Heads And Exposed Motives: Coverings As A Means To Unity At Corinth, April M. Hoelke Jan 2014

Exposed Heads And Exposed Motives: Coverings As A Means To Unity At Corinth, April M. Hoelke

MA in Religion Theses

This thesis argues that in 1 Corinthians 11:2-16 Paul asserts most centrally that women should wear head coverings while praying and prophesying in the Corinthian Christian assembly. I examine the honor and shame value system of the Greco-Roman world, both generally and in specific reference to head adornment, since head coverings and hairstyles were connected to honor and status. Then I look at Paul's treatment of honor and shame throughout 1 Corinthians, which denounces the worldly value system of status seeking in favor of the value system of the cross. Paul's stance leads him to subject cultural norms to gospel …

Carl Jung And Yehuda Halevi: Imagination, Symbols And The Loss Of The Sacred, Jeff Robinson Jan 2014

Carl Jung And Yehuda Halevi: Imagination, Symbols And The Loss Of The Sacred, Jeff Robinson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this project, we offered an examination of the work of Yehuda Halevi and Carl Jung. The thesis for this project is that these two thinkers offer very similar perspectives on a number of ideas, central of which is the dichotomy between the use primacy of the intellect and the imaginative faculty of man. While other researchers in passing with one another frequently mention these two thinkers, a full examination of their works has not been offered before. This project will offer a unique exploration of the works of Jung and Halevi.

While the examination of the dichotomy between the …

A Divine Round Trip: The Literary And Christological Function Of The Descent/Ascent Leitmotif In The Gospel Of John, Susan Elizabeth Humble Jan 2014

A Divine Round Trip: The Literary And Christological Function Of The Descent/Ascent Leitmotif In The Gospel Of John, Susan Elizabeth Humble

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The thesis of this dissertation is that the Descent/Ascent Leitmotif, which includes the language of not only descending and ascending, but also going, coming, and being sent, performs a significant literary and christological function in the Gospel of John. The Evangelist's Descent/Ascent Leitmotif becomes the Gospel's organizing principal, drawing together a constellation of verbs and a number of themes, including Jesus-Son's origin, identity, relationship to God, authority, signs and works, life, and glory.

In the introductory chapter, after providing a layout of the dissertation, the discussion turns to the spacial dimensions and christological importance of the vertical and horizontal depictions …
