Incorporating Global Sustainability In The Business Language Curriculum, Steven J. Sacco, Altina M. Jones, Richard L. Sacco
Global Business Languages
“Providing food, water, energy and other human needs to the world's entire population without harming the environment is a formidable task,” according to Purdue University’s Global Sustainability Institute. Global sustainability is an academic discipline that has infiltrated all levels of education. Inherently interdisciplinary in nature, global sustainability involves all colleges of any university. International business and its academic twin, foreign languages for business and economics, can play a critical role in the teaching of global sustainability. In this article, the co-authors describe the teaching of global sustainability in foreign language classrooms through the use of case studies. The co-authors specifically …
Law And Religion: Sharia Law And The First Amendment, Joseph A. Williamson
Law And Religion: Sharia Law And The First Amendment, Joseph A. Williamson
Senior Honors Theses
America has long been seen as the capital of religious freedom and individual rights. In recent years a debate has arisen over whether an individual can personally adhere to the legal concept of sharia law under the protections of the first amendment. At the center of this debate is precedent that can be drawn from previous interactions between religion and American ideals. Two similar issues that have been settled both judicially and legislatively are the conscientious draft objector and the federal prohibition of polygamy. By studying the roots of Islamic law and then the basis of these two concepts, a …

Preserving Kyai Authority In Modern Society; A Case Study Of Pesantren Cidahu, Pandeglang, Banten, Yon Machmudi
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
A pesantren is a typical component of the Indonesian cultural heritage. Besides being thought of as one of the oldest type of educational institutions in Indonesia, pesantren have played a significant contributing role in the process of nation building in modern Indonesia. Pesantren have many roles in society in education, the economy and in the social and political fields in which pesantren alumni play a role. Currently, pesantren roles are being challenged by modernization and they have to change or transform into modern institutions in order to survive. Nevertheless, traditional pesantren continue to resists change and they insist on preserving …

Verbal Fluency: Norms For The Lakota Population In Semantic And Phonemic Fluency Tasks, Larissa M. Jordan
Theses and Dissertations
The Lakota language in western South Dakota is spoken by a people group with a rich cultural and religious heritage. The Lakota language, still spoken by elderly Lakota people, is slowly vanishing as the majority of people in younger generations are no longer learning Lakota and with it the semantic knowledge of how Lakota speakers view the world. This study was completed to gather semantic information about the animals that bilingual Lakota English speakers name in English and in Lakota.
An additional objective of this study was to develop normative data for the Lakota people on phonemic (letter P) and …

The Image Of Women In The Interpreted Qur'an: Translations Of Pickthall, Ali, Hilali And Abdel Haleem, Yassmine Muhammad Mahfouz Muhammad
Theses and Dissertations
The Image of Women in the Interpreted Qur’ān: Translations of Pickthall, Ali, Hilālī, and Abdel Haleem By Yassmine Muhammad Mahfouz (Under the supervision of Professor Tahia Abdel Nasser, The American University in Cairo). I have intended this work with the premise of shedding light on the rights of women in the Qur’ān through examining its English translations since this topic has undergone much controversy between patriarchal and Islamophobic camps. However, through the examination of the translations, I have touched on how translation cannot only be problematic but also dangerously influential in presenting the sacred text. The main finding was that …

Pre-Ottoman Minarets In Anatolia, Mohamed Ibrahim Radwan
Pre-Ottoman Minarets In Anatolia, Mohamed Ibrahim Radwan
Theses and Dissertations
It is very difficult to find nowadays a masjid in any of the main Islamic cities, such as Cairo, Istanbul or Baghdad, without a minaret or more flanking any of it’s corners. This is a clear indication of how important this element is in Islamic architecture and may be a good reflection of the symbolic and functional role it played. Studying the origins and different forms of the pre-Ottoman minaret can shed some light on one of the most important aspects of the Islamic architecture in Anatolia and the development of the minaret in the Islamic world. The form of …

The Supposed Dissipation Of Figural Imagery In Mamluk Art: A Study Of Mamluk Iconography, Jennifer Peruski
The Supposed Dissipation Of Figural Imagery In Mamluk Art: A Study Of Mamluk Iconography, Jennifer Peruski
Theses and Dissertations
The arts of the Mamluks are considered a particularly rich field of study stretching over a nearly three hundred year period. Diverse in their make-up, the progression and development of this art began with strong Ayyubid influences that quickly evolved into a style that was uniquely Mamluk. While many historians have argued that figural imagery all but disappeared in these later progressions of Mamluk art, most notably following the reign of the Mamluk sultan al-Nasir Muhammad (1309-1341), the reality of these conclusions is much more complex. Indeed, the lack of conclusively dated materials from these later periods has been a …

Comparison Of American And International University Students' Knowledge, Attitudes, And Perceptions Of Arabs In The United States, Post September 11, 2001, Sara Al-Kahandi
University Presentation Showcase Event
After the September 11, 2001 attacks, the Middle Eastern population in the United States became a target of racial profiling by law enforcement. The USA Patriot Act, mass interviews and NSEERS. (Henderson et al, 2006 / Strossen, 2004). However, Arab students have continued to attend American universities. In fact, in as recently as 2013, there has been a seven percent increase in the enrollment of International students in colleges and universities in the United States with most of the growth driven by China and Saudi Arabia. (Open Doors, 2014) In a 2010 study by Jadallah and El-Khoury, a participant describes …

Islam, Sacrifice, And Political Theology In John Milton's Samson Agonistes, Renee Marvin
Islam, Sacrifice, And Political Theology In John Milton's Samson Agonistes, Renee Marvin
HIM 1990-2015
A shift in gaze has occurred in the study of the early modern period, one which has begun to examine the Western world in a more global and comprehensive context. This shift has been extensively written upon with regards to a historical consideration by researchers like Nabil Matar, Jeremy Brotton, Gerald MacLean, and others. This “re-orientationâ€, as MacLean calls it, has extended itself into the realm of literature studies, though Shakespeare and his works have been the focus of much of the scholarship circulating today. While the Bard has much to tell us, in the spirit of this expansion my …

This study explored the reflective practice among Saudi female in-service teachers. The purpose of this research was to examine the reflective practice skills and attitudes that are used by Saudi teachers. It observed the voice of Saudi teachers during their reflection on their daily practice. Then, this study used the teachers’ narratives to understand how they actually use reflective teaching skills in their classrooms. This study followed convergent parallel mixed methods research design where quantitative and qualitative data were collected separately but concurrently. The study participants were chosen by following the process of stratified random sampling to provide proportional representation …

Human Torches: The Genesis Of Self-Immolation In The Sociopolitical Context, Ryan Michael Nixon
Human Torches: The Genesis Of Self-Immolation In The Sociopolitical Context, Ryan Michael Nixon
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
In 2012 there was a record number of self-immolations globally. This phenomenon has been associated with the civil unrest and the collapse of regimes. Most recently, self-immolations in Tunisia sparked a revolution that led to the collapse of the Tunisian government. In the study of politics, self-immolations frequently appear merely as footnotes in the discussion of other phenomena. Where research has been previously conducted, focus has rested mainly on how it initially became a tool of contention and how it spreads. This paper seeks to understand the conditions that lead individuals to choose this method of protest. To do so, …

Arabic Study Abroad: An Exploratory Study Of Connections Between Journal Writing And Language Gains, Kendon Kurzer, Dr. Dan Dewey
Journal of Undergraduate Research
This project explored connections between language gains and instances of positive and negative responses as recorded in pseudo-dialogue journals kept by second language learners of Arabic participating in a study abroad (SA) program to Jordan. Daily journals from seven of forty-four total participants were analyzed for this project: those of the four students who showed the most proficiency gains over the course of the program as determined by pre- and post-study abroad program Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) scores, and those of the three students who showed no proficiency gains between their pre- and post-program OPI scores. Trends noted included the …
Limits To Literacy: The Perceived Relationship Between Functional Literacy And Political Empowerment Amongst The Forest-Dwelling Van Gujjars, Nicola Soekoe
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The failure of countrywide basic literacy campaigns to enhance social mobility has led to the promotion and development of localized, comprehensive functional literacy campaigns. These campaigns are particularly applicable to marginalized groups; as they aim to empower communities by providing them with the necessary skills to navigate their socioeconomic and political environments. This qualitative study examines the long-term impact of one such functional literacy campaign on the semi-nomadic pastoral Van Gujjar community. I use the Assets, Opportunity Structure, and Degrees of Empowerment (DOE) method to investigate community members’ perceptions of the level of political empowerment that followed their participation in …
Political Religiosity And Gender Inequality Within The Arab World, Damara Simpson
Political Religiosity And Gender Inequality Within The Arab World, Damara Simpson
Political Science Student Scholarship
Typically, stories of gender inequality in the Arab World points towards Islam as a major contributing factor. The research question of this project is: what is the cause of the gender inequality and lack of women’s rights in Arab countries? I hypothesized that the level of political religiosity of Arab countries is directly linked to gender inequality. The dependent variable for my research project is gender inequality, and the independent variable is political religiosity. My hypothesis was tested by rating and ranking countries in terms of political religiosity and gender inequality and comparing these two data sets graphically. According to …
As Stable As The Dollar Stretches: The Impact Of Us Foreign Aid On Social Stability In Jordan, Jasmine Renee Jordan
As Stable As The Dollar Stretches: The Impact Of Us Foreign Aid On Social Stability In Jordan, Jasmine Renee Jordan
Honors Theses
After the fall out of the Arab Spring in 2010, most of the countries in the Middle East and North Africa region suffered from extreme political, social, and economical instability. Usually, the citizens of these counties were revolting against the authoritarian regimes that have held power for decades. Jordan stands as the only obvious exception. How has Jordan maintained relative economic stability where others have failed? I have found that it is hard to judge the economic or social stability of Jordan without recognizing the large amounts of foreign aid Jordan has received from the US. This thesis asks what …

Students' Perceptions Of Interaction In A Hybrid Foreign Language (L2) Arabic Course In Light Of Their Affective Domain, Hanan Elsayed Ahmed Eltayeb Youssef
Theses and Dissertations
Abstract Hybrid courses were developed to maintain the advantages associated with distance learning, while solving the problem of learner-instructor interaction. This would indicate that successful learner-instructor interaction is one of the core features of this type of class which enables it to best serve the learner. To verify the above, a descriptive, qualitative case study was designed to investigate students' perceptions of interaction (student-instructor and student-student) in a hybrid foreign language Arabic course, taking into account their affective domain. The structure of the hybrid course which was investigated consisted of a videoconferencing session conducted by the main teacher, followed by …
