Soundscape Evaluation On Mississippi State University Campus, Yalcin Yildirim
Soundscape Evaluation On Mississippi State University Campus, Yalcin Yildirim
Theses and Dissertations
The term soundscape, used for the first time at the end of 1970s, refers to the sum of the sounds that can be heard and perceived by people in a specific environment. The concept of soundscape has recently received attention in planning and design disciplines. Recent studies on soundscape have shown that the acoustic environment plays an important role for the comfort of site users. Hence, this research investigates how objective measurement of soundscape might be different from subjective perceptions of users in the Mississippi State University Campus as a public open space due to demographic and climatic variations. The …
Intensification As A Survival Strategy For Early Settlers On The Tombigbee National Forest, Jessica L. Gisler
Intensification As A Survival Strategy For Early Settlers On The Tombigbee National Forest, Jessica L. Gisler
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates the relationship between success and access to children, slaves, and kin as labor sources during the period of 1833 to 1865 in northeast Mississippi. The theoretical concepts of agricultural intensification and relative intensity were used to measure variability among the households. Artifacts from seven archaeological sites were used to establish mean dates. These sites were tied to their original occupants through historic records. A historic document search revealed the number of slaves and children each family had, and whether they had kin living nearby. Agricultural census records showed the productivity of each farm during the study period. …

The Mentor In You:Expected And Recieved Study Abroad Preparation, Emily Miner, Hannah Meyer
ISU Ethnography of the University Initiative
When you think of studying abroad, visions of exotic locations and wild adventures come to mind. However, have you ever thought about the process before going abroad? This study examines the steps and programs offered to a student before going abroad. The research process involved examining existing literature about the study abroad process and what programs are offered at Illinois State University. Two interviews were conducted with students who have already studied abroad and one interview with a student who is about to study abroad. Further investigation included reviewing blogs and examining the data through narrative analysis. The research findings …
Imagined And Activated Capital Within Study Abroad: Ethnographic And Auto-Ethnographic Reflections, Amanda Miller, William Shaw
Imagined And Activated Capital Within Study Abroad: Ethnographic And Auto-Ethnographic Reflections, Amanda Miller, William Shaw
ISU Ethnography of the University Initiative
Through ethnographic interviews and auto-ethnographic reflections of Illinois State University students about the meanings and experiences of study abroad, demonstrates that students imagine the study abroad experience as that which is individually transformative, advantageous within the employment sector, and an experience that increases cultural competence and global citizenship. Study abroad participation is influenced by race and socioeconomic status; individual habitus is argued to factor into how study abroad is perceived. Focusing on how class and race determine the ways in which study abroad is constructed through analysis of the meanings of the study abroad experience through imagined, transformed, and activated …

Forging A New Identity: Report Of The Metropolitan University Steering Group, Metropolitan University Steering Group
Strategic Planning
This report represents the consensus of a working group of faculty, staff, students, and community members appointed by the President of USM. Its membership was not necessarily intended to be representative of particular departments or academic units, but rather of its faculty members’ demonstrated commitment to public, civically engaged education and community action. The report is but the first step in the overall strategic transformation of USM. As a consensus document, it does not necessarily reflect the individual opinions of every member on every issue; a larger, more involved unfolding and participation of the entire USM community is now required …

Understading "International": Faculty Perspectives On Study Abroad And Global Studies Education, Ethan Ingram
ISU Ethnography of the University Initiative
Little research has been devoted to critiques of study abroad programming coming from faculty perspectives. This research examines faculty critiques of study abroad arising from proposed changes in general studies education that would allow students to substitute study abroad for "global studies" coursework that specifically covers topics related to non-Western societies. While faculty are generally supportive of study abroad, opposition to this proposed policy change highlight questions of study abroad's role in higher education.

Impact Of Improving Throughput In The Emergency Department, Katherine J. Edrington
Impact Of Improving Throughput In The Emergency Department, Katherine J. Edrington
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
The purpose of this project was to evaluate the patient experience in the emergency department (ED) and in the inpatient setting while correlating increased throughput and patient outcomes at a suburban Acute Care facility in Ohio. The culture in the organization has lacked accountability and ownership of the patients. The ED admitted length of stay (ALOS) was 358 minutes in the beginning of 2013. For the first time in the organization’s history, the ED ALOS is now typically less than the recommended benchmark of 300 minutes. A report of findings among ED’s surveyed showed the ALOS best practice is 244 …

Into The Red: A Look Into The Reasons Why Refugees Decide To Flee, Settle Or Migrate To And From Morocco, Fadeelah E. Holivay
Master's Theses
This research paper explores some of the main reasons why refugees and asylum seekers, particularly from sub-Saharan African countries, embark on a journey and decide to settle, flee or migrate to and from Morocco. Because of this phenomenon, Morocco has seen a 96% increase of refugees migrating to the borders of Morocco each year for the past three years. Many say that this astonishing increase of migrants choosing Morocco is due to such factors as: wars breaking out regionally across central African and Middle Eastern countries causing them to flee; Morocco being a culturaly diverse francophone country whose laws and …
Combating Hiv/Aids In Marginalized Communities: Papua And West Papua Provinces, Indonesia, Bani Cheema
Combating Hiv/Aids In Marginalized Communities: Papua And West Papua Provinces, Indonesia, Bani Cheema
Master's Theses
My study focuses on foreign aid and local initiatives for HIV/AIDS prevention in eastern Indonesia using the provinces of Papua and West Papua as a case study. The two provinces are home to indigenous tribal groups that are socioeconomically marginalized and most affected by the epidemic. My research investigates behavior change communication as a principal strategy undertaken by multiple organizations for HIV/AIDS prevention in this region. I take a qualitative approach by examining the effectiveness of this strategy in local communities and by revealing social and cultural barriers that impede success. Obstacles that negatively impact prevention efforts include structural violence, …

Culturally Relevant Esl Pedagogy For California Community College Teacher Educators, Jeff Moran
Culturally Relevant Esl Pedagogy For California Community College Teacher Educators, Jeff Moran
Master's Projects and Capstones
Demographics in the US are changing rapidly. The current white majority will fall below 50% of the total population by 2060. This shift has already occurred in California, where Latino/as are the largest single ethnic group in the state. California community college student populations reflect this reality, as at least 65% are students of color and 25% are immigrants to the US. California community college ESL instructors are often involved in teaching immigrants and non-native English speakers of color. In contrast to the student body, California community college teacher demographics remain overwhelmingly homogenous, as over 82% of full and part-time …

Exploring The Intersection Between Folk And Conventional Medicine In Albany, Kentucky, Chloe J. Brown
Exploring The Intersection Between Folk And Conventional Medicine In Albany, Kentucky, Chloe J. Brown
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Approximately 60% of patients surveyed (in Albany, KY) practice folk medicine, which suggests that a significant segment of the population may practice folk medicine. Patients typically use folk medical treatments concurrently with conventional medical treatments; while the interaction of these treatments is generally innocuous or positive, folk medical treatments can sometimes be harmful, lead to negative interactions with other drugs prescribed by a conventional medical professional. Since folk medicine and conventional medicine frequently interact, it is important for medical professionals to be aware of and address folk medical practices in a conventional medical environment. In order to better address folk …
Developmental And Cultural Perspectives On Children’S Postoperative Pain Management At Home, Brooke N. Jenkins, Michelle A. Fortier
Developmental And Cultural Perspectives On Children’S Postoperative Pain Management At Home, Brooke N. Jenkins, Michelle A. Fortier
Psychology Faculty Articles and Research
Outpatient surgery is extremely common in children, and approximately 4 million children experience significant pain after surgery in the USA each year. Management of children's postoperative pain in the home setting is suboptimal and is impacted by characteristics of children and parents, as well as the larger family and cultural context. In particular, developmental status of the child, parental beliefs regarding pain expression and analgesic use in children, cultural values and language barriers can affect management of children's postoperative pain. Targeting the myriad barriers to children's pain management by capitalizing upon the use of tailored interventions may help bridge the …
Creolization West One. Sam Selvon's The Lonely Londoners, Bill Schwarz
Creolization West One. Sam Selvon's The Lonely Londoners, Bill Schwarz
Anthurium: A Caribbean Studies Journal
The Lonely Londoners still stands as the classic story about Caribbean migration to the UK in the twentieth century. The purpose of this article is to uncover the literary forms which underwrite its status as a 'classic.' Selvon's writing is representative of an early colonial modernism, developing a particular style of diasporic realism, in which the dialectic of reality/unreality stands as decisive. This partly derives from literary form, and partly from the collective experience of migrant time. Central to ths is mode of representation is the Creolization of the linguistic structure of the anglophone novel-form itself, evident not only in …

A Community That Dances Never Dies: An Ethnographic Study On People Of The African Diaspora Within The African Dance And Drum Community In Chicago, Ifetayo Kitwana
Creative Arts Therapies Theses
This ethnographic study explored the possible innate healing properties and therapeutic aspects of West African dance within a public community setting for people of the African diaspora, specifically the African dance and drum community of Chicago. The study was conducted to identify a possible means for preventative work, explore the unique mental health needs of African Americans and expand the understanding of dance/movement therapy concepts outside of the clinical setting. The study revealed the usefulness of West African dance as a means to connect African Americans to their heritage of physical, mental, and spiritual healing. A narrative analysis of informal …

Informing Systems, Interventions, And Innovations, William Francis Murphy Jr.
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this dissertation is to not only explain the informing system discipline, but to explore cases from the perspective of the basic tenants of informing systems. The first essay explains what informing science is, the need for a transdiscipline, the channels of the Informing Science Institute informing system, and describes the clients of the ISI. The first essay ends with an analysis of the authors, institutions, and countries of origin for every ISI paper published between 1998 and 2009, as well as reporting interviews with the Editor-In-Chiefs of each ISI journal. The second essay investigates a case study …

Tales That Tell All: A Political Analysis Of Folktales Of Iran, Yass Alizadeh
Tales That Tell All: A Political Analysis Of Folktales Of Iran, Yass Alizadeh
Doctoral Dissertations
This research presents an analytical study of the rewritten folktales of Iran in 20th century, and investigates the ideological omissions and revisions of oral tales as textual productions in modern Iran. Focusing on the problematic role of folktales as tales about the unreal and the fantastic serving a political purpose, this study traces the creative exercises of Iranian storytellers who apply ideological codes and meanings to popular folk language. The works of Mirzadeh Eshqi (1893-1924), Sadegh Hedayat (1903-1951), Samad Behrangi (1939-1968) and Bijan Mofid (1935-1984) are examples of a larger collection of creative writing in Iran that through the …

Caught In The Middle: Chat(Ting) About Black School Leaders, Demetricia L. Hodges
The Qualitative Report
The purpose of this article is to “chat” about my experience using Eurocentric theories in racial and culturally centered qualitative inquiry. The challenge I face is that I believe researchers can use Eurocentric theories to conceptualize ‘appropriate’ frameworks to conduct rigorous culturally responsible and sensitive research that contributes to existing scholarly dialogue and empirical literature on culturally sensitive designs in the field of qualitative research. In this paper I use my research experience to address the question, “How can researcher(s) conduct culturally responsible and sensitive research?” I use autoethnography and writing as a method of inquiry to (re)present the multi-layers …
