Environmental Education In Amman, Sara Lyrnn Green

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This research addresses environmental education in public and private schools in Amman, Jordan and what is being done to expand environmental awareness by both schools and the government. This study’s methodology is comprised of interviews with teachers and government employees as well as analysis of material culture. The research finds that environmental education is priority for schools and the government, but that more can be done in expanding environmental awareness. This study points out barriers to environmental education in schools with the hope that these will be addressed and improved.

How Secular Should Democracy Be? A Cross-Disciplinary Study Of Catholicism And Islam In Promoting Public Reason, David Ingram, David Ingram Oct 2014

How Secular Should Democracy Be? A Cross-Disciplinary Study Of Catholicism And Islam In Promoting Public Reason, David Ingram, David Ingram

Philosophy: Faculty Publications and Other Works

I argue that the same factors (strategic and principled) that motivated Catholicism to champion liberal democracy are the same that motivate 21st Century Islam to do the same. I defend this claim by linking political liberalism to democratic secularism. Distinguishing institutional, political, and epistemic dimensions of democratic secularism, I show that moderate forms of political and epistemic secularism are most conducive to fostering the kind of public reasoning essential to democratic legitimacy. This demonstration draws upon the ambivalent impact of Indonesia’s Islamic parties in advancing universal social justice aims as against more sectarian policies.

The Illusion Of Autonomy In Women's Medical Decision-Making, Jamie R. Abrams Oct 2014

The Illusion Of Autonomy In Women's Medical Decision-Making, Jamie R. Abrams

Florida State University Law Review

This Article considers why there is not more conflict between women and their doctors in obstetric decision-making. While patients in every other medical context have complete autonomy to refuse treatment against medical advice, elect high-risk courses of action, and prioritize their own interests above any other decision-making metric, childbirth is viewed anomalously because of the duty to the fetus that the state and the doctor owe at birth. Many feminist scholars have analyzed the complex resolution of these conflicts when they arise, particularly when the state threatens to intervene to override the birthing woman’s autonomy.

This Article instead considers the …

African-Born Women’S Birth Experiences In Worcester, Ma, Marianne Sarkis, Anneke Kat, Maya Baum, Bernadine Mayhungu

Local Knowledge: Worcester Area Community-Based Research

How do African Immigrant women interact with the Worcester healthcare system during pregnancy?

This study follows stories told by mostly Ghanaian women living in Worcester in order to understand their challenges in the maternal healthcare system. The researchers seek to understand cultural differences, socio-economic standing and communication challenges that have led to these women having one of the highest infant mortality rates in Worcester. The authors found that their interviews with healthcare providers shed the most light on what discrepancies exist between how the health care providers understand how this population experiences birth opposed to how these women experience birth …

Identity Crisis: Making Sense Of Post-Apartheid Relationships Between Whiteness And Antiracism, Justin Bradshaw Oct 2014

Identity Crisis: Making Sense Of Post-Apartheid Relationships Between Whiteness And Antiracism, Justin Bradshaw

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This independent study project sought to explore white South African antiracist identities during post-apartheid South Africa and how the ways of making meaning of an antiracist identity contribute to and reflect the conceptual frameworks that already exist. Furthermore, this study intended to illuminate how white identifying antiracist persons in post-apartheid South Africa can be allies in the struggle for a more racially equitable society. The frameworks involved in this project are the academic study of whiteness, critical race theory, and antiracism.

In this study the researcher interviewed four white South Africans who, in one way or another, are intellectually involved …

Anthropology Faculty Publications

Evidence from sites in the lower Ulua valley of north-central Honduras, occupied between a.d. 500 and 1000, provides new insight into the connections between households, craft production, and the role of objects in maintaining social relations within and across households. Production of pottery vessels, figurines, and other items in a household context has been documented at several sites in the valley, including Cerro Palenque, Travesía, Campo Dos, and Campo Pineda. Differences in raw materials, in what was made, and in the size and design of firing facilities allow us to explore how crafting with clay created communities of practice made …

Global Health Faculty Publications

Global efforts are underway to develop and promote improved cookstoves which may reduce the negative health and environmental effects of burning solid fuels on health and the environment. Behavioral studies have considered cookstove user practices, needs and preferences in the design and implementation of cookstove projects; however, these studies have not examined the implications of the traditional stove use and design across multiple resource-poor settings in the implementation and promotion of improved cookstove projects that utilize a single, standardized stove design. We conducted in-depth interviews and direct observations of meal preparation and traditional, open-fire stove use of 137 women aged …

Furthering Liberal Arts In Indonesian Higher Education, Judith Puncochar Oct 2014

Furthering Liberal Arts In Indonesian Higher Education, Judith Puncochar

Conference Presentations

The study of Liberal Arts is absent in Indonesian higher education. A strong participatory democracy may require skills engendered by a rigorous study of the liberal arts. When I arrived in Indonesia in August 2014, I found a vibrant Indonesian democracy and smart, eager-to-learn university students who were unsatisfied with MKDU (General Education) classes. A strong democracy requires skills engendered by a rigorous study of Liberal Arts. Restructuring the MKDU classes as Liberal Arts classes using active, student-centered instruction should lead to higher levels of critical thinking in college students, higher quality of teachers in local schools, and better citizenship …

The Poetics Of Talk In Robert Louis Stevenson’S Treasure Island, Amy Wong Oct 2014

The Poetics Of Talk In Robert Louis Stevenson’S Treasure Island, Amy Wong

Collected Faculty Scholarship

This essay considers the relationship between Robert Louis Stevenson’s well-loved adventure classic Treasure Island and his philosophical commitments to talk. For Stevenson, talking and adventuring share an experiential poetics that emphasizes responsiveness to unpredictable interactions. By examining several of Stevenson’s prose pieces, including “Talk and Talkers” and “My First Book” as well as Treasure Island, this essay argues that the novel aspires to translate the poetics of talk into a print medium. Treasure Island imagines itself as a form of “living print,” a work that, like Long John Silver’s parrot, seems more dynamic than print typically is, yet is …

Differences In Cultural Perception In Websites, Andrew Allen

Open Access Theses

The goal of this research was to determine what elements of websites are tied to the value of individualism and collectivism when viewed by two different national cultures. The research determined whether two participant groups (United States or Chinese) looked at the same or different website elements when experiencing the website. The Website Experience Analysis protocol was used to create a questionnaire that the students filled out as they experienced the website, allowing the researcher to determine what elements of the website they were experiencing when focusing on a particular cultural or organization-public relation value. This research found that culture …

The College Is Our Classroom: Campus Assessment Leaders Share Their Most Effective (And Favorite) Faculty Development Programs, Caroline A. Critchlow, Jane M. Souza, Lori A. Hollenbeck, Cathy S. Sweet

Educational Effectiveness Assessment Faculty/Staff Publications

The goal of assessment is to inform instructional strategies in order to improve student learning. This is as true when you are developing “lessons” for faculty as it is when faculty are designing lessons for their students. By approaching the college campus as a classroom, program-level assessments can indicate areas that might benefit from instructional support.

In this presentation, four assessment leaders, representing both professional schools and general education, share their most effective faculty development programs and how they were created to respond to assessment results. Participants will receive the notes and materials from these faculty development programs.

Indigenous Politics, Sumak Kawsay, And Community Tourism: A Case Study From Amazonian Ecuador, Christopher Jarrett Oct 2014

Indigenous Politics, Sumak Kawsay, And Community Tourism: A Case Study From Amazonian Ecuador, Christopher Jarrett

Southern Anthropologist

This essay explores the relationship between visions of the ideal society that emerge from social movements and local, small-scale socio-economic and cultural projects that might contribute to achieving these ideals. It discusses the concept of sumak kawsay, a term meaning “living well” in the Kichwa language, which has been used in Ecuador to refer to a holistic concept of well-being involving economic, environmental, and social factors. Sumak kawsay originally emerged in the discourse of Ecuador’s indigenous movements, and the country has incorporated the concept, along with its Spanish-language version of buen vivir, into its most recent constitution in 2008. Buen …
