Who Is A Jew?: Reflections On History, Religion, And Culture, Leonard Greenspoon Oct 2014

Who Is A Jew?: Reflections On History, Religion, And Culture, Leonard Greenspoon

Studies in Jewish Civilization

Jewish identity is a perennial concern, as Jews seek to define the major features and categories of those who “belong,” while at the same time draw distinctions between individuals and groups on the “inside” and those on the “outside.” From a variety of perspectives, scholarly as well as confessional, there is intense interest among non-Jewish and Jewish commentators alike in the basic question, “Who is a Jew?”

This collection of articles draws diverse historical, cultural, and religious insights from scholars who represent a wide range of academic and theological disciplines. Some of the authors directly address the issue of Jewish …

An Application Of Space Syntax To Critical Working Space Analysis: The Case Of Building Construction, Li-Wen Wu, Sy-Jye Guo Oct 2014

An Application Of Space Syntax To Critical Working Space Analysis: The Case Of Building Construction, Li-Wen Wu, Sy-Jye Guo

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The definition of critical space used in this paper is identical to the critical path definition employed in the critical path method (CPM). This definition implies that there is no extra floating space; thus, any conflict is expected to result in productivity loss. Space syntax is a theory developed to reveal the hidden interrelationships between spaces using architectural diagrams. Existing studies have indicated the potential for space syntax to identify critical spaces and to assist in reducing conflicts leading to productivity loss. However, there is not yet quantitative evidence demonstrating whether the quantitative parameters of relative convenience and relative control …

Cults Of Lovecraft: The Impact Of H.P. Lovecraft's Fiction On Contemporary Occult Practices, John Engle Oct 2014

Cults Of Lovecraft: The Impact Of H.P. Lovecraft's Fiction On Contemporary Occult Practices, John Engle

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Examines a particularly troubling use of fiction: the adoption of an author’s work, against his own intentions, as a quasi-religious text for cultic practices. Lovecraft’s mythos is thus observed in the process of deliberately being made into a worship tradition by occult and Satanic practitioners, in spite of the author’s personal scientific rationalism.

Civilization And Self-Determination: Interpreting R.G. Collingwood For The Twenty-First Century - Part I, Gautam Ghosh Oct 2014

Civilization And Self-Determination: Interpreting R.G. Collingwood For The Twenty-First Century - Part I, Gautam Ghosh

Comparative Civilizations Review

This article – the first of two – elaborates and endorses the understanding of civilization as advanced by R. G. Collingwood. Particular attention is given to two of his most neglected works, The New Leviathan and "What 'Civilization' Means." The New Leviathan in particular was written in the context of the rise of fascism and the prosecution of World War II. To support the war effort, Collingwood reconceptualized notions of civilization and linked it to a rationality of self-determination. Central to his argument are the distinctions he draws between civilization and barbarism, on the one hand, and between social, economic …

A Prisoners' Island: Teaching Australian Incarcerated Students In The Digital Age, Susan Hopkins, Helen Farley

Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)

While incarcerated students have always faced many obstacles to full and effective participation in university study, the global shift toward paperless e-learning environments has created new challenges for prisoners without direct internet access. Based on prison focus groups with Australian incarcerated students and direct participant observation while tutoring tertiary students within four Queensland correctional centres, this paper explores the obstacles and constraints faced by incarcerated students in light of the increasing digitisation of materials and methods in higher education. This paper also reviews the outcomes, limitations and challenges of recent Australian projects trialling new internet-independent technologies developed to improve access …

SOCIAL FORMS AND CULTURE WITHIN MILLER PARK

Andrew Griffin

109 Pages December 2014

This research explores the physical design and usage of Miller Park in Bloomington, IL for evidence of a cultural lineage to Frederick Law Olmsted and for indications that Miller Park functions as a third place locale as envisioned by Ray Oldenburg. The Ground Slate Transition On The Northwest Coast: Establishing A Chronological Framework, Joshua Daniel Dinwiddie Oct 2014

The Ground Slate Transition On The Northwest Coast: Establishing A Chronological Framework, Joshua Daniel Dinwiddie

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis establishes the earliest appearance of ground slate points at 50 locations throughout the Northwest Coast of North America. Ground slate points are a tool common among maritime hunter-gatherers, but rare among hunter-gatherers who utilize terrestrial subsistence strategies; ground slate points are considered one of the archaeological hallmarks of mid-to-late Holocene Northwest Coast peoples. The appearance of ground slate points in the archaeological record is frequently marked by a concurrent decline in the prevalence of flaked stone points, a phenomenon often referred to as "the ground slate transition." Until now, the specific timing of the appearance of these tools …

Is Servant Leadership Inherently Christian?, Andrey V. Shirin Oct 2014

Is Servant Leadership Inherently Christian?, Andrey V. Shirin

Journal of Religion and Business Ethics

Servant leadership has gained broad currency among Christians of various persuasions. At the same time, surprisingly little consideration is given to cultural assumptions behind servant leadership, particularly to the meaning of service in question. The paper will examine these assumptions in light of Christian tradition as reflected in works of St. Augustine. The paper will argue that, while there are some affinities between traditional Christian spirituality and servant leadership as commonly understood, this should not lead us to conclude that the latter is an outgrowth of the former. While an Augustinian theology of leadership will inevitably have a robust service …
