In The Shadow Of Tolerance: The Discursive Context Of Dutch-Born Muslim Youth, Mayida Zaal
In The Shadow Of Tolerance: The Discursive Context Of Dutch-Born Muslim Youth, Mayida Zaal
Department of Secondary and Special Education Scholarship and Creative Works
Despite a public discourse on tolerance, anxiety about immigrants, Islam and the preservation of Dutch values has amplified fear of Muslim youth in the Netherlands. In this context, Dutch-born Muslim youth endure social and systemic discrimination that affects all aspects of their futures, including available educational opportunities and eventually their prospects for employment. ased on a one-year qualitative study conducted in Amsterdam, this article explores the lived experience of Dutch-born Muslim youth caught at the intersection of national policies and local realities. Grounded in critical literature originating in the Netherlands and in Europe, this inquiry triangulates participant observations, focus groups …

Criminal Justice As A Colonial Project In Contemporary Settler Colonialism, Juan Marcellus Tauri, Ngati Porou
Criminal Justice As A Colonial Project In Contemporary Settler Colonialism, Juan Marcellus Tauri, Ngati Porou
African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies
This paper offers an Indigenous-centred, critical perspective on the Colonial Projects (Thomas, 1994) employed in settler-colonial contexts to negate, or at the very least nullify, the negative impact of two inter-related ‘wicked problems’ that are deemed peculiar to these jurisdictions: the high levels of Indigenous over-representation in the criminal justice system, and the impact of Indigenous resistance to the hegemony of the imposed, criminal justice systems deployed by settler-colonial states. The paper is comprised of three inter-related parts; the first two outline the construction and deployment of Colonial Projects in the colonial and neo-colonial contexts, wherein it is argued that …
Authoritarian Criminology And The Racial Profiling Debate In Canada: Scientism As Epistemic Violence, Tamari Kitossa
Authoritarian Criminology And The Racial Profiling Debate In Canada: Scientism As Epistemic Violence, Tamari Kitossa
African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies
The scholarly debate about racial profiling in Canada centres on the attack or defence of methods and conclusions. To date, the scholarly literature in Canada has largely excluded the debate about racial profiling as itself a site of inquiry. Focusing on the 2003 Canadian Journal of Criminology and Criminal Justice (CJCCJ) special colloquy that responded to the Toronto Star’s claims that the Metro Toronto systemically engage in racial profiling, I use Agozino’s critique of imperialist reason and Tauri’s concept of authoritarian criminology to demystify how the CJCCJ and its authoritarian respondents engaged in a positivistic agenda setting ‘discursive formation’ rooted …

"It's Just A Way Of Fitting In:" Tobacco Use And The Lived Experience Of Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Appalachians, Keisa Bennett, Janelle M. Ricks, Britteny M. Howell
Family and Community Medicine Faculty Publications
Lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) people are affected by multiple health disparities and risk factors, including tobacco use. Few studies to date have examined tobacco use specifically in rural LGB populations, and none has investigated the intersections of identity, rural LGB culture, and tobacco. The purpose of this study was to explore the perspective of Appalachian LGB people regarding tobacco use.
METHODS: Nineteen LGB-identified Appalachian residents participated in audiotaped, semi-structured interviews. Two authors analyzed and coded transcripts through constant comparison, and determined themes through consensus.
RESULTS: Five themes emerged: the convergence of Appalachian and LGB identities, tacit awareness …
Everyone Loves A Winner…Or Do They? Introducing Envy Into A Sales Contest To Increase Salesperson Motivation, Alexander Milovic, Rebecca Dingus
Everyone Loves A Winner…Or Do They? Introducing Envy Into A Sales Contest To Increase Salesperson Motivation, Alexander Milovic, Rebecca Dingus
Marketing Faculty Research and Publications
This paper focuses on the role that envy can play in driving sales force behavior in competitions. Envy, an unpleasant emotion that occurs when a person covets something that another has, can be used as a motivating tool to push lower-ranked salespeople to better compete with high achievers. Following a review of envy and sales contest effectiveness, potential strategies are provided for implementing benign envy while avoiding the potential negative consequences of envy. Sales managers must be careful to ensure that envy is induced properly to engage the employees while not negatively affecting the long-term health of the sales force.

The Classroom As A Peace Incubator: A Us-Gaza Case Study, Ian S. Mcintosh, Jamil Alfaleet
The Classroom As A Peace Incubator: A Us-Gaza Case Study, Ian S. Mcintosh, Jamil Alfaleet
Peace and Conflict Studies
This paper describes the design, implementation, and lessons from a case study in transforming two university classrooms into what we call an international “peace incubator.” In the besieged Gaza Strip, opportunities for normalization of relations with Israel are almost non-existent, and there is very limited desire or personal capacity among the student population of Gaza to do the work of peace-building. A semester-long videoconference class linking IUPUI and Gaza University students sought to address this deficit by developing a model for building ties of friendship and cooperation. West Bank peace activist Juliano Mer Khamis once spoke of a coming Third …

Tablet-Based Mobile Gis Approaches To Archaeological Data Collection, Ian Lindsay
Tablet-Based Mobile Gis Approaches To Archaeological Data Collection, Ian Lindsay
Purdue GIS Day
Over the past 15 years, archaeological research in northern Armenia has documented the unique evolution of prehistoric complex societies in the South Caucasus, where complex, fortress-centered institutions emerged during the Late Bronze Age (c.1500-1150 BC) not from settled farming villages—as is more typical of archaic states—but from mobile herding communities. As the costs of archaeological fieldwork continue to rise, resulting in shorter and more intensive field seasons, researchers are leveraging new technologies to improve the efficiency and accuracy of data collection in the field. An increasingly popular solution in archaeology is the use of “paperless” site recording strategies that enhance …

Raw Milk, Raw Power: States Of (Mis)Trust, Diana Mincyte
Raw Milk, Raw Power: States Of (Mis)Trust, Diana Mincyte
Publications and Research
In recent years, raw milk has emerged as one of the most contentious food commodities, considered a serious health risk by public health officials and a source of healing and nourishment by raw milk proponents. The purpose of this article is to explore the ways in which consumers construct and experience trust in food that is often procured in informal markets. Because the image of an overreaching, exploitative government features prominently in popular narratives surrounding raw milk consumption, this article is explicitly concerned with the role of the state in public food debates. Drawing on two complementary empirical cases of …

Establishing Tobacco Origin From Pollen Identification: An Approach To Resolving The Debate, Shane Williams, Shelby Hubbard, Karl Reinhard, Sérgio Augusto De Miranda Chaves
Karl Reinhard Publications
Previous research into pollen content of tobacco resulted in a debate. We address this debate and determine that pollen analysis may be able to assist with identifying geographical origin of tobacco. However, the value of any results should be assessed on a case-by-case regional basis until sufficient database information is available for an objective interpretation to be undertaken on a global basis. As a first step toward developing comparative data for South America, we analyzed a tobacco sample from Brazil in an effort to identify signature taxa from the state of Minas Gerais. We also assessed the role of honey …
An Intersectional Analysis Of Sex Trafficking Films, Carrie N. Baker
An Intersectional Analysis Of Sex Trafficking Films, Carrie N. Baker
Study of Women, Gender, & Sexuality: Faculty Publications
This essay analyzes the portrayal of sex trafficking in representative dramas and documentaries, both Hollywood and independent films. The majority of these films use a rescue narrative to tell the story of sex trafficking: an innocent and naïve young woman or girl is tricked or abducted by a villainous trafficker, who imprisons her and controls her with brutal violence until a heroic rescuer overcomes tremendous adversity in order to save her. Race and nationality inflect this gendered narrative: the rescuers are usually white, Western men and the traffickers are from Eastern Europe and/or are men of color. The issue of …

Introduction: Critical Perspectives On Food Sovereignty, Marc Edelman, Tony Weis, Amita Baviskar, Saturnino M. Borras Jr., Eric Holt-Giménez, Deniz Kandiyoti, Wendy Wolford
Publications and Research
Visions of food sovereignty have been extremely important in helping to galvanize broad-based and diverse movements around the need for radical changes in agro-food systems. Yet while food sovereignty has thrived as a ‘dynamic process’, until recently there has been insufficient attention to many thorny questions, such as its origins, its connection to other food justice movements, its relation to rights discourses, the roles of markets and states and the challenges of implementation. This essay contributes to food sovereignty praxis by pushing the process of critical self- reflection forward and considering its relation to critical agrarian studies – and vice …

Ijara district in Kenya was one of the hotspots of rift valley fever (RVF) during the 2006/2007 outbreak which led to human and animal deaths causing huge economic and public health losses. The main constraint in the control and prevention of RVF is inadequate knowledge on its occurrence during the interepidemic period. This study was aimed at understanding the occurrence of RVF in cattle in Ijara to enable the development of improved community-based disease surveillance, prediction, control and prevention.Six herds each 700-1000 cattle were identified with participatory involvement of locals and project technical team of the project. One animal per …
Stakeholders' Perceptions Of Parental Involvement And Home-School Connections In A South Texas Border Town, Cynthia A. Lopez
Stakeholders' Perceptions Of Parental Involvement And Home-School Connections In A South Texas Border Town, Cynthia A. Lopez
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
Latinos have a high amount of individuals residing in poverty, and, yet, are still the fastest growing minority group in the nation (Gandara & Contreras, 2009; National Council of La Raza, 2014). For some families, living in poverty and the need to earn a living prevents parents from being actively involved in their children’s education (Moreno & Gaytan, 2013). Therefore, the need to form alliances with parents is critical. Partnerships with parents must be formed to better understand the necessities of these children. Consequently, educators should convey to parents the significance of forming links between the home and school. Moreover, …

Water Resources And The Historic Wells Of Barbuda: Tradition, Heritage And Hope For A Sustainable Future, Rebecca Boger, Sophia Perdikaris, Amy E. Potter, John Mussington
Earth, Environment & Sustainability: Faculty Publications
The island of Barbuda has a relatively unique history, land tenure and geography. Unlike its Caribbean counterparts, the island is not suited to large-scale agriculture due to its arid climate and relatively thin soils. Instead, the enslaved and eventually free people of Barbuda developed a complex herding ecology centered on common land ownership. As a result, carefully designed historic wells are strategically located around the island. With the challenges brought about by climate change, an interdisciplinary, international team led by the Barbuda Research Complex is investigating the state of existing water and food resources and examining how the availability and …
Cultural Psychological Theory, Kimin Eom, Heejung S. Kim
Cultural Psychological Theory, Kimin Eom, Heejung S. Kim
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Cultural psychology has revived the original intention of the cognitive revolution in which psychologists aimed to bring meaning to the study of the mind (Bruner, 1990). In contrast to much of psychological research that has been devoted to discovering “pure” context-free psychological mechanisms, the basic assumption of cultural psychology is that the human psyche cannot exist independently of its sociocultural contexts, and therefore, the study of human actions must consider the contexts in which these actions take place (Shweder, 1995). From the beginning, cultural psychology has aimed to understand the mutual influence between psyche and cultural contexts. According to the …

Curriculum, Foundations & Reading: Faculty Publications
The text of our manifesto will introduce posthumanism to a curriculum studies audience and propose new directions for curriculum theory and educational research more broadly. Following a description of what is variously called the “posthuman condition” or the “posthuman era,” our manifesto outlines the main theoretical features of posthumanism with particular attention to how it challenges or problematizes the nearly ubiquitous assumptions of humanism. In particular, we focus on how posthumanism responds to the history of Western humanism’s justification and encouragement of colonialism, slavery, the objectification of women, the thoughtless slaughter of non-human animals, and ecological devastation. We dwell on …

Anthropology Of, For, And With Design: A Philippine Perspective, Ds Maranan, P Cajilig
School of Art, Design and Architecture
The intersection of the fields of design and anthropology emerges as fertile ground for study as societies increasingly acknowledge the tremendous impact the objects we create for ourselves have on our lives. As anthropologists and ethnographers involved in running our own design research company in the Philippines, negotiating the alignments and contradictions between the two fields of knowledge is an essential component of our everyday research practice. This paper outlines different models of the relationships between design and anthropology as systems of knowledge and practice. We first extend a theoretical framework that distinguishes between anthropology of, anthropology for, and anthropology …

Food Sovereignty: Forgotten Genealogies And Future Regulatory Challenges, Marc Edelman
Food Sovereignty: Forgotten Genealogies And Future Regulatory Challenges, Marc Edelman
Publications and Research
‘Food sovereignty’ has become a mobilizing frame for social movements, a set of legal norms and practices aimed at transforming food and agriculture systems, and a free- floating signifier filled with varying kinds of content. Canonical accounts credit the Vía Campesina transnational agrarian movement with coining and elaborating the term, but its proximate origins are actually in an early 1980s Mexican government program. Central American activists nonetheless appropriated and redefined it in the late 1980s. Advocates typically suggest that ‘food sovereignty’ is diametrically opposed to ‘food security’, but historically there actually has been considerable slippage and overlap between these concepts. …
