The Significance Of The Numbers Three, Four, And Seven In Fairy Tales, Folklore, And Mythology, Alonna Liabenow Jan 2014

The Significance Of The Numbers Three, Four, And Seven In Fairy Tales, Folklore, And Mythology, Alonna Liabenow

Honors Projects

“Once upon a time … a queen was sitting and sewing by a window with an ebony frame. While she was sewing, she looked out at the snow and pricked her finger with the needle. Three drops of blood fell onto the snow” (Snow White 81). This is a quote which many may recognize as the opening to the famous fairy tale Snow White. But how many would take notice of the number three in the last sentence of the quote and question its significance? Why, specifically, did three drops of blood fall from the queen’s finger? The quote from …

Remaking Indians, Remaking Citizens: Peruvian And Mexican Perspectives On Criminal Law And National Integration, Lior Ben David Jan 2014

Remaking Indians, Remaking Citizens: Peruvian And Mexican Perspectives On Criminal Law And National Integration, Lior Ben David

Studio for Law and Culture

At the end of the 20th century, recognition of indigenous peoples’ rights in Latin American constitutions has undergone significant evolution, while legal reforms officially “turned” some of these countries into multicultural nations. For many scholars, this multicultural shift was particularly prominent against a background of many years, during which the legal systems of Latin America ignored, excluded, assimilated and repressed indigenous peoples, portraying “The Indian” as an anomaly in a society of free end equal citizens. This article examines the images, representations and treatment of the Indians and “the Indian Question” in Peruvian and Mexican Criminal Law during the first …

Law And Fiction In Medieval Iceland: The Story In The Gragas Manuscripts, Thomas J. Mcsweeney Jan 2014

Law And Fiction In Medieval Iceland: The Story In The Gragas Manuscripts, Thomas J. Mcsweeney

Studio for Law and Culture

Medieval Icelandic law has been appropriated for modern purposes as diverse as creating a history for European democracy and proving that a libertarian legal system can work in practice. It has been put to so many modern uses because it presents us with a picture of the Icelandic Commonwealth (ca. 930-1262) as a society of free and relatively equal farmers who operated with no king, no nobility, and minimal government. The laws represent Iceland as an exceptional polity, strikingly different from the monarchies and hierarchical societies that dominated Western Europe in the middle ages. This exceptionalism resonates strongly with modern …

The P-P-P-Perceptions Of St-St-St-Stuttering, Tiffani Kittilstved Jan 2014

The P-P-P-Perceptions Of St-St-St-Stuttering, Tiffani Kittilstved

2014 Symposium

The purpose of this research is to determine how stuttering is viewed and whether education about stuttering will alter listeners’ perceptions towards stutterers. A widely used therapy technique associated with stuttering is self-advertising, where stutterers notify their listener that they stutter than those who do not. Studies have shown that listeners react more positively towards stutterers who self-advertise. My research takes this idea further, investigating how stuttering is perceived in groups who are educated about stuttering and groups who are not. To research this, I interviewed students and constructed a survey that I gave to a control group and an …

The Obstacles Chicanos Face In The United States, Maria Galindo Jan 2014

The Obstacles Chicanos Face In The United States, Maria Galindo

2014 Symposium

When coming to the United States many immigrants think the biggest challenge they face will be leaving their families. Many do not realize the real challenge awaits them when they arrive in the United States. One of the main challenges they face is that of discrimination and overcoming negative stereotypes Americans use to describe them. Children are being raised to think these remarks are acceptable. In this paper I am going to provide information from personal blogs of experiences that have affected their everyday lives . This paper will provide evidence of the struggles they face with language barriers and …

Successes And Problems Of The Hawaiian Language Revitalization Movement, Anna Greiner-Shelton Jan 2014

Successes And Problems Of The Hawaiian Language Revitalization Movement, Anna Greiner-Shelton

2014 Symposium

The revitalization of the Hawaiian language is considered a success in the short term due to several factors including favorable government policies regarding revitalization, a large independent movement that formed the core of the language revitalization movement and provided the basis for Hawaiian language schools, and successful adaptation and use of the Internet and other multimedia sources to teach and promote use of the Hawaiian language. However, even though the revitalization effort has been largely successful, there are still several problems associated with the language revitalization movement. These problems include the authenticity of the version of the Hawaiian language being …

Theory And Practice Of Inclusive Education In Hungary, Agnes N. Toth Jan 2014

Theory And Practice Of Inclusive Education In Hungary, Agnes N. Toth

Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education

Before changing the political regime, Hungary was almost exclusively affected by the Soviet and Eastern- European communist countries whose impact was profound on Hungarian education system as well. Hungary had a traditionally separated schooling system for mainstream and disabled children due to the diagnose-based model of special needs pedagogy. Vygotsky was one of the most popular scientists in Moscow who developed ‘an area of scientific scholarship devoted to problems of diagnosing, educating and rehabilitating children with physical and mental handicap (known as ‘defects’)’ (Knox 1989, as cited in Ainscow & Memmenasha 1998:16).

“Women Made It A Home”: Representations Of Women In Social Studies, Mardi Schmeichel Jan 2014

“Women Made It A Home”: Representations Of Women In Social Studies, Mardi Schmeichel

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

This article explores recently published P–12 social studies lesson plans that include women to examine how attending to women is “getting done” in the field and how the lessons represent women and women’s experiences. Using discourse analysis methodologies, the author demonstrates that women have been included as topics in ways that do not work toward disrupting problematic discourses about gender norms. Through their avoidance of issues of power and patriarchy, most of the lessons fall short of addressing gender inequity—in the past or the present—in a significant way. More critical attention to women and gender in lessons, as well as …

The National Historic Preservation Act: Preserving History, Impacting Foreign Relations?, Mark P. Nevitt Jan 2014

The National Historic Preservation Act: Preserving History, Impacting Foreign Relations?, Mark P. Nevitt

Faculty Articles

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, the highest political leader in Japan, shook his head in disbelief. His tenure as Prime Minister had been tense, partly due to the ongoing question of a replacement airfield for the U.S. Marines in Futenma. A predecessor, Yukio Hatoyama, also suffered political fallout stemming from his reversal of a public promise to find a replacement location for the U.S. Marine Corps Air Station. Prior to the Hatoyama administration, the Japanese government had selected a new location for the Marine Air Station, a remote area far removed from the busy city of Okinawa in Henoko. Moving …

The Cure For Young Prosecutors' Syndrome, Ronald F. Wright, Kay L. Levine Jan 2014

The Cure For Young Prosecutors' Syndrome, Ronald F. Wright, Kay L. Levine

Faculty Articles

Although legal scholars treat prosecutors like interchangeable parts, we argue—based on interviews and surveys of over 200 state prosecutors in eight offices—that scholars should be alert to the differences among them, because new prosecutors experience their professional role differently than their veteran colleagues do. This divergence happens because, as new prosecutors gain experience, their professional identities shift—they become more balanced over time. This Article explores the prosecutor’s professional transformation and the possible catalysts for that change.

When experienced prosecutors describe their career trajectories, they regret the highly adversarial posture they adopted earlier in their careers. While the constant quest for …

A Prequel To Law And Revolution: A Long Lost Manuscript Of Harold J. Berman Comes To Light, John Witte Jr., Christopher J. Manzer Jan 2014

A Prequel To Law And Revolution: A Long Lost Manuscript Of Harold J. Berman Comes To Light, John Witte Jr., Christopher J. Manzer

Faculty Articles

The late Harold Berman was a pioneering scholar of Soviet law, legal history, jurisprudence, and law and religion; he is best known today for his monumental Law and Revolution series on the Western legal tradition. Berman wrote a short book, Law and Language, in the early 1960s, but it was not published until 2013. In this early text, he adumbrated many of the main themes of his later work, including Law and Revolution. He also anticipated a good deal of the interdisciplinary and comparative methodology that we take for granted today, even though it was rare in the …

Organizational Development Consulting: A Study Of Expert Consultants' Key Strategies, Mona Vosoughi

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The present study was conducted to capture the collective voice of expert organizational development consultants. Until now, very few studies have been conducted that take into account the collective voices of organizational development consultants. More specifically, the purpose of the present study is to explore and gain a deeper understanding of the approaches expert organizational development consultants use throughout their engagement with their clients in an attempt to add value to and enhance organizational capacity. To understand the process used by this distinct group of leaders, phenomenological qualitative inquiry was the methodology used to conduct this study. Data were collected …

Factors That Relate To Registered Nurses' Readiness For Interprofessional Learning In The Context Of Continuing Professional Development, Collette Williams Jan 2014

Factors That Relate To Registered Nurses' Readiness For Interprofessional Learning In The Context Of Continuing Professional Development, Collette Williams

Dissertations

Today’s health-care professionals practice in a highly technological, multidisciplinary environment. In order to provide safe, effective, and high-quality patient care, collaboration is required among all professionals. Traditionally each profession has operated independently in regard to continued professional development. The purpose of this study was to assess practicing registered nurses’ readiness toward interprofessional learning in order to align learning with current practice.

Method. An ex post facto study design was used to gather data to examine if there is a relationship between variables of demographics and readiness for interprofessional learning. The Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS) assesses the readiness for …

Developmental Origins Of Pregnancy Loss In The Adult Female Common Marmoset Monkey (Callithrix Jacchus), J. N. Rutherford, V. A. Demartelly, D. G. Layne Colon, Corinna N. Ross, S. D. Tardif Jan 2014

Developmental Origins Of Pregnancy Loss In The Adult Female Common Marmoset Monkey (Callithrix Jacchus), J. N. Rutherford, V. A. Demartelly, D. G. Layne Colon, Corinna N. Ross, S. D. Tardif

Biology Faculty Publications (Archived)

Background: The impact of the intrauterine environment on the developmental programming of adult female reproductive success is still poorly understood and potentially underestimated. Litter size variation in a nonhuman primate, the common marmoset monkey (Callithrix jacchus), allows us to model the effects of varying intrauterine environments (e.g. nutrient restriction, exposure to male womb-mates) on the risk of losing fetuses in adulthood. Our previous work has characterized the fetuses of triplet pregnancies as experiencing intrauterine nutritional restriction. Methodology/Principal Findings: We used over a decade of demographic data from the Southwest National Primate Research Center common marmoset colony. We evaluated differences between …

The Impact Of Accreditation On The Teacher Education Curricula At Two Historically Black Colleges From 1920-1940, Denise J. Shaver Jan 2014

The Impact Of Accreditation On The Teacher Education Curricula At Two Historically Black Colleges From 1920-1940, Denise J. Shaver

Dissertations

Problem. Many historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are experiencing major challenges in meeting accreditation requirements. Without good accreditation status they are in jeopardy of losing student enrollment and facing closure. Concern about accreditation has become a growing topic of interest within the African American higher education community. This study explored the topic by looking at some of the historical origins of the accreditation movement in HBCUs. It uses various experiences of two higher education organizations to detail some of the original challenges and the impact on HBCUs from regional accreditation. It focuses on HBCUs through the time period 1920-1940. …

A Difficult Conversation: Corporate Directors On Race And Gender, Kimberly D. Krawiec, John M. Conley, Lissa L. Broome

Faculty Scholarship

This symposium essay summarizes our ongoing ethnographic research on corporate board diversity, discussing the central tension in our respondents’ views – their overwhelmingly enthusiastic support of board diversity coupled with an inability to articulate coherent accounts of board diversity benefits that might rationalize that enthusiasm. As their reactions make clear, frank dialogue about race and gender – even a seemingly benign discussion of diversity’s benefits – can be a difficult conversation.
