The Effects Of Collaborative Critical Thinking Training On Trust Development And Effectiveness In Virtual Teams, Mark Grichanik
The Effects Of Collaborative Critical Thinking Training On Trust Development And Effectiveness In Virtual Teams, Mark Grichanik
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Workers in modern teams that perform tasks over computer-mediated communication channels encounter challenges in building trust and performing effectively. Finding interventions to mitigate such losses could improve team performance. Collaborative critical thinking (CCT) training has the potential to improve trust, monitoring, and effectiveness in virtual teams. Using a simulated search-and-rescue task, the effects of CCT training, as compared with a control training, were evaluated in 105 three-member teams. No effects of CCT training were found on team positive or negative monitoring, team cognitive or affective trust, team efficacy, or team viability. However, teams trained in CCT reported consistently higher levels …

Academic And Commercial Qualitative Research: The Best Of Both Worlds, Ronald J. Chenail
The Qualitative Report Conference
With apologies to George Bernard Shaw, academic qualitative research and commercial qualitative research have been “two countries separated by a common language,” but this cultural divide has its positives because these divergent customs present opportunities for mutual innovation. Today we will explore these differences and offer enhancements for both worlds.

Documentary Borders: Reality Or Illusion, Sabine Roux, Caroline Courbières
Documentary Borders: Reality Or Illusion, Sabine Roux, Caroline Courbières
Proceedings from the Document Academy
The concept of border of document allows us to deploy the significant content of a document in several regimes of meaning. A document can be studied as a semiotic mediation according its communicational intention (intention to inform, intention to signify, intention to inform oneself, intention to interpretate). After studying those values of the document, the question is about whether a documentary border persists unchanged when regimes of meaning are updated. The slipping of documentary borders is examined through the content of the diverse works of Jocelyn Bonnerave. His doctoral thesis in anthropology documenting practices in performing arts influenced his theatrical …

Exploring Patient Assessment Practices In The Acute Hospital Environment: An Ethnography, Sonya R. Osborne
Exploring Patient Assessment Practices In The Acute Hospital Environment: An Ethnography, Sonya R. Osborne
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Session presented on Friday, July 25, 2014:
Purpose: In Australia, as in other countries, recognising and responding to clinical deterioration in hospitalised patients has become a national priority. Ward nurses play an essential role in detecting acute care patients at risk of clinical deterioration through attentive surveillance, diligent assessment, and timely intervention. Much attention in the literature has been given to the efferent limb of the clinical deterioration pathway, such as hospitals' implementation of the use of early warning scores, track and trigger systems, and rapid response teams. Yet, unrecognised clinical deterioration continues to be a significant problem. The literature …
More Than Vital Signs: Reframing Nurses' Recognition And Response To Clinical Deterioration, Sonya R. Osborne
More Than Vital Signs: Reframing Nurses' Recognition And Response To Clinical Deterioration, Sonya R. Osborne
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Session presented on Friday, July 25, 2014:
Clinical deterioration frequently goes unnoticed in hospitalized patients (1). Growing concerns about failure-to-rescue rates have prompted government initiatives and consensus statements designed to improve timely recognition of acutely ill patients in hospital (2, 3, 4). Given that detectable physiological signs often precede deterioration (5), hospitals have implemented early warning systems and rapid response teams to identify and respond to patients at risk of clinical deterioration. Yet, there is insufficient evidence about the effectiveness of these interventions (5, 6). These hospital safety initiatives depend on registered nurses' (RNs) ability to detect patients at risk …
Development Of The Barriers To Nurses' Use Of Physical Assessment Scale, Clint Douglas
Development Of The Barriers To Nurses' Use Of Physical Assessment Scale, Clint Douglas
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Session presented on Friday, July 25, 2014:
Purpose: There is growing evidence of failure to recognise hospitalised patients at risk of clinical deterioration, in part due to inadequate physical assessment by nurses. Yet, little is known about the barriers to nurses' use of physical assessment in the acute hospital setting and no validated scales have been published. Complex intervention studies designed to address these barriers and improve nursing assessment skills are also needed. However, before interventions targeting nurses' assessment practices can be developed, a valid and reliable measure of barriers to physical assessment skills is required. The purpose of the …
Factors Influencing Nursing Assessment Practices, Carol L. Reid
Factors Influencing Nursing Assessment Practices, Carol L. Reid
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Session presented on Friday, July 25, 2014:
Purpose: Changing acuity of hospitalised patients means sicker patients with more complex needs are at greater risk of becoming seriously ill during their stay. Frontline registered nurses (RNs) play an essential role in detecting patients at risk of clinical deterioration through ongoing assessment and timely, appropriate action in response to changing health status. Government agencies worldwide have developed guidelines for recognition of and response to acute clinical deterioration. Nevertheless, clinical deterioration continues when it may have been prevented. Little research has examined factors related to registered nurses' use of assessment skills. The purpose …

Integrating Community Service Into Scholarship: Youth Engagement By Active Participation Case Study Of Ruwwad, Eunjee Anna Koh
Integrating Community Service Into Scholarship: Youth Engagement By Active Participation Case Study Of Ruwwad, Eunjee Anna Koh
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This research project applies Asset-Based Community Development theory to Ruwwad, a community-based organization in Al-Natheef. As a marginalized community, the approach to community development must be investigated to ensure that it does not worsen the community dependency. Through the Myoub Khorma Youth Education and Empowerment Fund, Ruwwad provides scholarships for youth from the neighborhood and surrounding areas. The impact of the scholarship on youth was investigated through conducting student interviews and collected material culture published by the organization. Ruwwad exemplifies an example of asset-based community development in the Middle East and youth have shown that they feel empowered through an …

Understanding Perceptions And Attitudes To Risk In The Tourism Industry, Anthony Clayton, Lourdes Cisneros Mustelier, Maximiliano E. Korstanje
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
An increasingly complex and rapidly-evolving array of risks presents one of the greatest challenges for decision-makers in all sectors, including the transport and tourism industry. The prospects of an international destination can be profoundly damaged in minutes as a result of a major outbreak of infectious disease, a natural disaster or a terrorist incident. It is therefore vital to understand the changing nature of risk and the ways that risks are perceived and understood, especially as people tend to respond to the perception of risks rather than actual risks, which means that their responses are not always rational and can …

Lessons Learnt From The Westgate Shopping Mall Terrorist Attack In Nairobi, Kenya: Involving The Meetings, Incentives, Conferences And Exhibitions Sector In Crisis Communications, Ashley Schroeder, Lori Pennington-Gray, Kelly Bricker
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
The terrorist attacks in Nairobi Kenya have been widely disseminated by the world media, thus, affecting the long-term interests of stakeholders. The tourism industry is made up of a vast number of these stakeholders, with the operating sector alone including the accommodation, tourism services, transportation, entertainment, food services, adventure and outdoor recreation, attractions, meetings, incentive, conventions, and exhibitions (MICE), and travel trade sectors. Within each operating sector, there is also a variety of different stakeholders in various segments and organisations. The purpose of this manuscript is to examine tourism crisis communications surrounding the Westgate Shopping Mall attacks in Kenya. The …

Terrorism, Tourism And Worker Unions: The Disciplinary Boundaries Of Fear, Maximiliano E. Korstanje, Geoffrey Skoll, Freddy Timmermann
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
When the world seems poised on the brink of a never ending cycle of terrorism, the present paper polemically explores some of its historical roots. The first anarcho-terrorists in 19th century, fought to improve the working conditions of people. Some of them used violent tools, hosting civilians as targets. Others, convinced by the futility of their efforts to change the order, opted for organizing workers in factories. It is widely accepted that tourism came from the social, political, technological developments in the nineteenth century. We compare terrorist attacks with workers’ strikes, because they come from the same developments. We …

House Of Cards: The Academic Library Media Center In The Era Of Streaming Video, Rachel King
House Of Cards: The Academic Library Media Center In The Era Of Streaming Video, Rachel King
Brooklyn Library Faculty Publications
In a time of increasing financial pressures on universities, the expense of library resources—and the potential for cost inflation—threaten the academic library collection. This article asks whether the academic library media center will be able to continue to offer a stable inventory of films, given the legal and commercial structures currently in place. It provides a history of the film industry’s interactions with its intermediaries, forecasts some of the obstacles to ongoing feature film affordability and access in libraries, offers strategies for librarians, and suggests some cause for hope.

Vernal Pool: A Participatory Art Project About Place + Precipitation, Karen Miranda Abel, Jessica Marion Barr
The Goose
Produced by Karen Miranda Abel with Jessica Marion Barr, Vernal Pool is an immersive, elemental water installation created as a participatory, contemplative inquiry into our transitory interrelationships with water and landscape. From November 2013 to April 2014, 114 individuals across Canada and abroad gathered snow samples as a form of extrinsic artistic practice about place and precipitation. With the arrival of spring, the reservoir of melted snow was convened for four days at Toronto’s historic Gladstone Hotel to create Vernal Pool.
