Using Culturally Ambitious Teaching Practices To Support Urban Mathematics Teaching And Learning, Lanette R. Waddell Jan 2014

Using Culturally Ambitious Teaching Practices To Support Urban Mathematics Teaching And Learning, Lanette R. Waddell

Journal of Praxis in Multicultural Education

Culturally relevant pedagogy is an ideology upon which strong urban classrooms can be built. However, culturally relevant pedagogy has not been operationalized in a way that allows consistent implementation in classrooms. This work focuses on the conceptualization of culturally ambitious teaching practices (CATP) in mathematics that exemplify the tenets of culturally relevant pedagogy – academic achievement, cultural competence, and critical consciousness – with those of ambitious mathematics teaching practices. This paper will describe the findings of the initial work of developing and operationalizing CATP in mathematics through a quantitative and qualitative analysis.

Exploring Literacy In Our Own Backyard: Increasing Teachers’ Understanding Of Literacy Access Through Community Mapping, Kathy R. Fox

Journal of Praxis in Multicultural Education

Teachers develop a greater understanding of children when they leave their classrooms and become learners in the community. This article describes a project involving both pre-service and in-service teachers as they practice action research at community sites, such as a local homeless center, and then use these authentic experiences to inform their teaching.

A Life History Perspective On Skin Cancer And The Evolution Of Skin Pigmentation, Daniel L. Osborne, Raymond B. Hames Jan 2014

A Life History Perspective On Skin Cancer And The Evolution Of Skin Pigmentation, Daniel L. Osborne, Raymond B. Hames

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

The ancestral state of human skin pigmentation evolved in response to high ultraviolet radiation (UVR) stress. Some argue that pigmentation evolved to limit folate photolysis, therein limiting neural tube defects. Pigmentation also protects against sunburn which decreases the efficiency of sweating and potentiates skin infection. Pigmentation increases the efficacy of skin as a barrier to infection. Skin cancer has been rejected or minimized as a selective pressure because it is believed to have little or no effect on mortality during reproductive years. This argument ignores evidence of human longevity as a derived life history trait and the adaptive value of …

Transcriptional Analysis Of Reciprocal Tumor-Microenvironment Interactions In Glioblastoma, Michael Brooks Jan 2014

Transcriptional Analysis Of Reciprocal Tumor-Microenvironment Interactions In Glioblastoma, Michael Brooks

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

In the last twenty years both computational biology and cancer biology have made great strides and in the last 5 years the merger of the two has helped to revolutionize our knowledge of personalized targeted therapy and the diversity of cancer. In cancer, cell-to-cell interactions between tumor cells and their microenvironment are critical determinants of tumor tissue biology and therapeutic responses. Interactions between glioblastoma (GBM) cells and endothelial cells (ECs) establish a purported stem cell niche. We hypothesized that genes that mediate these interactions would be important, particularly as therapeutic targets. Using a novel computational approach to deconvoluting expression data …

For A Feminist Considering Surrogacy, Is Compensation Really The Key Question?, Julie Shapiro Jan 2014

For A Feminist Considering Surrogacy, Is Compensation Really The Key Question?, Julie Shapiro

Faculty Articles

Feminists have long been engaged in the debates over surrogacy. During the past thirty years, thousands of women throughout the world have served as surrogate mothers. The experience of these women has been studied by academics in law and in the social sciences. It is apparent that if properly conducted, surrogacy can be a rewarding experience for women and hence should not be objectionable to feminists. Improperly conducted, however, surrogacy can be a form of exploitation. Compensation is not the distinguishing factor. In this essay I offer two changes to law that would improve the surrogate's experience of surrogacy. First, …

Maximus The Confessor And A Deeper Actualization Of The Apostolic Dimensions Of Pentecostal Movements, Steve Overman Jan 2014

Maximus The Confessor And A Deeper Actualization Of The Apostolic Dimensions Of Pentecostal Movements, Steve Overman

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

Excerpt: "...I propose to explore one expression of this more ancient and eastern tradition, as found in the cosmic vision of Maximus the Confessor. After a brief sketch of his life and times and his relationship to the larger orthodox tradition I will attempt to lay out some of the chief features of both his theological and cosmological framework and his ascetic way of practice in community. I will conclude by suggesting that both this framework and way of practice can indeed help resource healing of humankind’s relationship with one another and the other realms of the creation and that …

Paper Versus Practice: Occupational Health And Safety Protections And Realities For Temporary Foreign Agricultural Workers In Ontario, Janet Mclaughlin, Jenna Hennebry, Ted Haines Jan 2014

Paper Versus Practice: Occupational Health And Safety Protections And Realities For Temporary Foreign Agricultural Workers In Ontario, Janet Mclaughlin, Jenna Hennebry, Ted Haines

Health Studies

Over 20,000 temporary foreign agricultural workers come to Ontario each year, primarily from Mexico and the Caribbean. Agricultural workers are exposed to a number of occupational health and safety (OHS) risks. This article discusses the various OHS protections available to workers and their limitations, and analyzes the specific challenges that temporary foreign workers face in accessing rights, such as language and cultural barriers, information gaps, and precarious employment and immigration status. It also analyzes the limitations with respect to OHS training and the provision and use of personal protective equipment, arguing that these protections are under-regulated and inconsistent. The article …

Snapshots From The Margins: Transgressive Cosmopolitanisms In Europe, Feyzi Baban, Kim Rygiel Jan 2014

Snapshots From The Margins: Transgressive Cosmopolitanisms In Europe, Feyzi Baban, Kim Rygiel

Political Science Faculty Publications

Right-wing parties and governments in Europe have recently expressed greater hostility towards cultural pluralism, at times officially denunciating multiculturalism, and calling for the closure of borders and denial of rights to non-European nationals. Within this context, this article argues for rethinking Europe through radically transgressive and transnational understandings of cosmopolitanism as articulated by growing transnational populations within Europe such as immigrants, refugees, and irregular migrants. Transgressive forms of cosmopolitanism disrupt European notions of borders and identities in ways that challenge both liberal multiculturalism and assimilationist positions. This article explores the limits of traditional cosmopolitan thinking while offering a vision of …

Unintended Consequences: Reverberations Of Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, Lauren Heidbrink Jan 2014

Unintended Consequences: Reverberations Of Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, Lauren Heidbrink

Faculty Publications

This paper details the socio-legal factors that shape the relationship between the child, the family, and the state, and the ways unaccompanied migrant children’s lives have come to be defined and contested. The legal identity of migrant children is socially situated within a history that intertwines social movements of helping professionals, legal jurisdictions characterized by increasingly intolerant approaches to juveniles, and shifts in the treatment of unauthorized migrant youth under immigration law over time. In a globalized world, this triangular relationship between children, families, and the state becomes increasingly complex and dynamic. Social policies and legal norms often lag far …

Interdisciplinary Librarians: Self-Reported Non-Lis Scholarship And Creative Work, Susan E. Thomas, Anne Leonard

Brooklyn Library Faculty Publications

Abstract Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to interpret and discuss survey results of a study of academic librarians’ scholarship and creative work outside of library and information science in order to reveal some librarians’ motivations to perform such work as well as their perceptions of administrators’ attitudes toward it. Design/methodology/approach – The authors published a link to a qualitative survey instrument on COLLIB-L and ULS-L, the e-mail lists for the college libraries section and the university libraries section of American Library Association, asking that only academic librarians engaged in scholarship and creative work outside of library and …
