Toward A Deweyan Theory Of Ethical And Aesthetic Performing Arts Practice, Aili W. Bresnahan Apr 2014

Toward A Deweyan Theory Of Ethical And Aesthetic Performing Arts Practice, Aili W. Bresnahan

Philosophy Faculty Publications

This paper formulates a Deweyan theory of performing arts practice that relies for its support on two main things:

  1. The unity Dewey ascribed to all intelligent practices (including artistic practice) and
  2. The observation that many aspects of the work of performing artists of Dewey’s time include features (“dramatic rehearsal,” action, interaction and habit development) that are part of Dewey’s characterization of the moral life.

This does not deny the deep import that Dewey ascribed to aesthetic experience (both in art and in life), but it does suggest that we might use his theory of ethical practice in conjunction with his …

Oral Health And Its Implications In Late Pleistocene Western Eurasian Humans, Sarah Ashlyn Lacy Apr 2014

Oral Health And Its Implications In Late Pleistocene Western Eurasian Humans, Sarah Ashlyn Lacy

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Systematic paleopathology research on the Late Pleistocene can provide a new perspective on the health, demographics and lifestyle of Paleolithic peoples; however oral pathologies, which can reveal both health and diet, have rarely been discussed beyond individual diagnoses. This project sampled Late Pleistocene humans from across Western Eurasia and collected data on dental and alveolar health, focusing on caries, periapical lesions, periodontal disease, and antemortem tooth loss. This research presents a number of new findings as well as reaffirming temporal patterns identified through other research lines (e.g., developmental stress and trauma), suggesting Early Upper Paleolithic peoples were healthier than the …

Growing Children: The Relationship Between Food Insecurity And Child Growth And Development., Ernesto Ruiz Apr 2014

Growing Children: The Relationship Between Food Insecurity And Child Growth And Development., Ernesto Ruiz

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examined the relationship between food security status and cultural congruence and indicators of child growth and development in a rural mountain town in Costa Rica. Results show that children from food secure households are significantly shorter and shorter-legged than their food insecure counterparts. It is theorized that these findings correspond to low quality diets associated with increasing commodification of food systems in rural Costa Rica. Identity-based mechanisms are discussed as potential factors contributing to the increasing commodification of life through the encroachment of the global market economy.

Accounts Of Settler Colonialism: A Comparative Study Of The Dakota & Palestinians’ Plight, Baligh Ben Taleb Apr 2014

Accounts Of Settler Colonialism: A Comparative Study Of The Dakota & Palestinians’ Plight, Baligh Ben Taleb

Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Over the course of the nineteenth century, American settlers spread throughout the Western frontier, driving out indigenous populations to establish unique and permanent homelands of their own. In doing so, they caused the death and displacement of thousands of Plains Indians, including the Dakota people in the young state of Minnesota in 1862. Indeed, the US-Dakota War represented a salient instance of settler colonial expansion on the frontier, triggering a bloody conflict between the Dakota Sioux and American military expeditions led by Henry H. Sibley. This paper attempts to contextualize this war within the broader framework of settler colonialism and …

The Devil Can’T Find You If You Hum: Post-Environmental Conductivity, Thomas Burkett Apr 2014

The Devil Can’T Find You If You Hum: Post-Environmental Conductivity, Thomas Burkett

Theses and Dissertations

What would a repositioned concept of environmentalism look like, one that is specifically determined by the geography and the human rights at stake within the environmental politics of a place? I am interested in determining how performative engagements act as an art form that counters dispossessing industrial, political and environmental regimes. Within this discussion of environmental dispossession I will discuss ways I have used drawing as a conceptual space to explore resistance, redefine cultural capital and challenge archeological structures of knowledge, through my presence and protest.

Theses and Dissertations

The following is an exploration of ideas and themes related to my studio work, past and present, concrete and aspirational. I approach painting as an experience of pleasure and as a mode of resistance and critique. I will discuss how my work is aligned with many of the themes found in the Pattern and Decoration movement of the 1970s. I will also identify alliances that my work has with DIY, networks, and the contemporary art scene as discussed in Lane Relyea’s "Your Everyday Art World". I describe my mode of working in the context of "workable resistance," which Jan Verwoert …

The Experience Of The Addiction-Affected Family: A Communication Based Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis, Tracy Manning Schaffer Apr 2014

The Experience Of The Addiction-Affected Family: A Communication Based Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis, Tracy Manning Schaffer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The purpose of my research is twofold: to better understand the experience of living with an addict as communicated through family members' illness narratives, and to give addiction-affected family members a voice. A gap currently exists in the literature regarding the experience of the addiction-affected family, as well as mental health literacy and its role in addiction. To address this gap, I performed a phenomenological study of family members who have dealt with or who are dealing with an addict who is also perceived to have the dual diagnosis of mental illness. I recruited participants using chain referral sampling. Using …

Identifying Conventions In Memphis Art History: A Case Study Of The Exhibition Present Tense: The Art Of Memphis, 2001-Now, Jody Liana Stokes-Casey Apr 2014

Identifying Conventions In Memphis Art History: A Case Study Of The Exhibition Present Tense: The Art Of Memphis, 2001-Now, Jody Liana Stokes-Casey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

In this research, the 2013 exhibition Present Tense: The Art of Memphis, 2001-Now hosted at the Dixon Gallery and Gardens is used as a case study to identify conventions in Memphis visual culture. The Dixon's history makes it an icon of wealth, power, and prestige and an influence on the mainstream art community of the city. Present Tense sought to introduce the traditional audiences to current, local artworks which created an interesting juxtaposition between conventional space and contemporary art. The paper argues the unequal demographics of artists in Present Tense are due in large part to a history of racial …

Interpersonal Relationship Marketing Investment: The Effects Of The Level Of Investment And Stage Of The Relationship On Customer's Felt Gratitude, Behavioral Intentions, Manipulative Intent, Personal Importance, And Perceptions Of The Seller's Cost, James J. Oakley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This study examines the strategic role of interpersonal relationship marketing investments, also known as customer entertainment. There continues to be a growing recognition that relationship marketing can create a competitive advantage for firms that leads to stronger levels of customer commitment, co-creation of value, and mutually beneficial economic outcomes. This study examines an important but often overlooked dimension of relationship building by focusing on how interpersonal bonds can be both created and strenthened in the buyer-seller dyad.Recent research has indicated that expenditures designed to build these types of bonds with individuals who represent the buying firm tend to outperform all …

The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly: The Construction Of Othering In Edward Bliss Emerson's Caribbean Journal Of 1831-1832, Alma Simounet

The Qualitative Report

This paper examines the vocabulary, grammar structures and rhetorical devices that appear in Edward Emerson’s journal based on his trip to the Caribbean. The end-in-view is to identify the devices that Emerson utilized, mostly unconsciously, in his depiction and construction of others; in the case of this journal, of the peoples he encountered in the Caribbean. The methodological approach of critical discourse analysis guides this examination.

Evidential Modern Political Authority, Nathan Adams Apr 2014

Evidential Modern Political Authority, Nathan Adams

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Under what conditions can a government justifiably punish citizens for disobeying its laws? Most philosophers today think that the government can morally obligate citizens to obey the laws only if the citizens actually consent to them. This amounts to philosophical anarchism, because no extant government meets this condition. But we can provide conditions for justifiable punishment without appealing to obligation. I focus on what people may be blamed for doing, and I argue that when the government has trustworthy expertise, it can issue laws that citizens may be justifiably punished for disobeying. This condition, unlike actual consent, can be met.

The Sustained Impact Of An Engaging Diversity Program On College Seniors’ Color-Blind Racial Attitudes, Josefina Banales Apr 2014

The Sustained Impact Of An Engaging Diversity Program On College Seniors’ Color-Blind Racial Attitudes, Josefina Banales

Honors Projects

This study utilizes a mixed-methods (quantitative and qualitative) approach to evaluate the long-term impact of Illinois Wesleyan University’s Engaging Diversity Program on white students’ color-blind racial attitudes. Survey data reveals that white students who participated in the program not only endorse fewer color-blind racial attitudes than they did immediately after completing the program, but that they also have a more critical awareness of race than the control sample of non-Engaging Diversity students. Individual interviews with Engaging Diversity participants also reveal a link between these students’ learned racial consciousness and their involvement as social justice leaders and advocates on campus. These …

Reconsidering The Reality Of Southeastern Mesoamerica: Continuity, Diversity, And Inter-Valley Interaction In Western Honduras, William J. Mcfarlane, Miranda K. Stockett Suri Apr 2014

Reconsidering The Reality Of Southeastern Mesoamerica: Continuity, Diversity, And Inter-Valley Interaction In Western Honduras, William J. Mcfarlane, Miranda K. Stockett Suri

Anthropology Papers and Presentations

The late fifth century AD was a time of rapid transformation in non-‐Maya southeastern Mesoamerica. From this time forward, the landscape of western Honduras would become filled with increasingly complex polities and rising populations. So too is there evidence for a distinctive change in material culture, such as the development of widely shared regional polychrome ceramic traditions and the stabilization of obsidian exchange networks. Arguably, more than any other period in prehistory, it is during the Late Classic that a unique cultural identity emerges from this part of southeastern Mesoamerica. In this paper we seek to answer the question, can …

The Ongoing Challenge Of Renewal In Contemporary Religious Life, Sandra Marie Schneiders Apr 2014

The Ongoing Challenge Of Renewal In Contemporary Religious Life, Sandra Marie Schneiders

Jesuit School of Theology

It is just 50 years since the close of Vatican II when we stood on the pristine peaks of a new beginning, surveying the broad vistas of possibility for genuine renewal in Religious Life and in the Church as a whole. In the next ten years the little dark cloud that appeared on the horizon with the death of Good Pope John became the thick black clouds of the “restoration.” The gathering darkness of the “reform of the reform” in which we found ourselves was further deepened by the explosion of the abuse scandals and the huge exodus of Religious, …

Tapestry Of Space: Domestic Architecture And Underground Communities In Margaret Morton’S Photography Of A Forgotten New York, Irina Nersessova Apr 2014

Tapestry Of Space: Domestic Architecture And Underground Communities In Margaret Morton’S Photography Of A Forgotten New York, Irina Nersessova

disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory

This article addresses the impact urban space has on individuals through the use of Situationist International theory and psychogeography. Representations of homelessness in New York in Margaret Morton's photography are used to demonstrate the interconnectedness among space, people, and social issues. Social issues manifest themselves in urban decay, and the inhabitants react to this phenomenon emotionally and artistically. Some inhabitants demonstrate their relationship with space by responding with material production of housing and art, which they accomplish by building without exploiting the environment the way the manufacturing of commodities often does.

On The Methodological Evolution And Its Limitation Of Literature Anthropology, Daqiao Wang Apr 2014

On The Methodological Evolution And Its Limitation Of Literature Anthropology, Daqiao Wang

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

This paper is a critical survey of literary anthropology in Chinese context. In the early 20th century in China, the main areas of investigation of literary anthropology are myths and ballads; during the Post-Mao Period, literary studies from the anthological perspective expand to literary texts and cultural texts, due to the influence of experimental ethnography and postmodernism. Practices in the above two periods show a consistent interest of research in the approaches of literary anthropology which evolves into the methods of cross-cultural comparison, primitivism, contextualism and field study etc. The paper concludes with the reflection on the potentialities and limits …
