Coming Home Hybrid: Returned Sojourner Identity In Everyday Life, Jon Benjamin Mcnair Jun 2014

Coming Home Hybrid: Returned Sojourner Identity In Everyday Life, Jon Benjamin Mcnair

Theses and Dissertations

Sojourns, or extended periods of time during which people travel and live abroad with the intention of returning to their home countries, are becoming ever more normal parts of the human experience around the globe. In the US, sojourners who travel as foreign aid workers, corporate employees, missionaries, educators, and military personnel and dependents, among others, make up an increasingly broad spectrum of the population. The experience of living abroad is often necessarily accompanied by some sort of identity change that affects how well one integrates into one's host culture (and, conversely, rejecting local customs and norms affects one's potential …

At The Periphery Of Architectural History – Looking At Eastern Europe, Carmen Popescu Jun 2014

At The Periphery Of Architectural History – Looking At Eastern Europe, Carmen Popescu

Artl@s Bulletin

Long-time absent or only briefly mentioned for those examples fitting into the schemata, Eastern Europe has started to integrate in the past few years the mainstream discourse of architectural history. The reason of this inclusion is to be sought for not only in a certain globalization – both of the practice and of the academic discipline – but also in the mutations operated recently in the field of architectural historiography. However, in spite of the renewed context, Eastern Europe remains still marginal, both geographically – though globalization turned peripherality into a relative issue – and disciplinarily. The paper looks at …

A Collaborative Autoethnographic Search For Authenticity Amidst The "Fake Real", Trenia L. Walker, Colette M. Taylor Jun 2014

A Collaborative Autoethnographic Search For Authenticity Amidst The "Fake Real", Trenia L. Walker, Colette M. Taylor

The Qualitative Report

This manuscript explores the importance of "authenticity" for the maintenance self-identity for social justice educators in higher education. A collaborative dialogue between two female faculty authors of different ethnicities explores and interprets how to balance one’s own situated understanding of themselves, shared discourse community, and a social justice paradigm. The authors systematically juxtapose their reflections on their experiences as educators in higher education to examine points of similarity and difference. By sharing and interrogating their individual experiences in higher education, the authors argue that the relationship between authenticity, identity, and social justice is complex and multifaceted. The authors conclude by …

A Look Inside Mathematics Coaching: Roles, Content, And Dynamics, Rejoice Mudzimiri, Elizabeth A. Burroughs, Jennifer Luebeck, John Sutton, David Yopp

Faculty Publications

Mathematics classroom coaching is used across the United States as a means for improving instruction, with the ultimate goal of improving student learning. The job assignments of coaches can vary widely across schools and districts. Regardless of the various forms that coaching can take, there is the consistent expectation that a coach's day-to-day work will positively influence classroom instruction. The study reported here attempts to gain a more complete picture of the job of an elementary mathematics coach based on the observation of seven coaches in five different districts for a day. We report the variety of ways we observed …

Environment, Rights, And Waste In Bolivia: Addressing Water And Sanitation Processes For Improved Infrastructure, Maryann R. Cairns Jun 2014

Environment, Rights, And Waste In Bolivia: Addressing Water And Sanitation Processes For Improved Infrastructure, Maryann R. Cairns

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Water and sanitation (WatSan) development projects impact both natural systems and societal structures where they are placed. A complex process of development, including inter-governmental policies, aid agencies, personal relationships, and community politics enhance and constrain the efficacy of these projects. This study presents the many ways in which the WatSan development process has unintended and unexpected returns for certain community groups. Using a political ecology framework, I look at power structures, perceived and projected environmental impacts, multiple stakeholders, and individual discourses to critique how the right to water and sanitation is implemented in a specific community context. This project advances …

“Copyright Is For Losers©™”: Street Art Flourishes In Intellectual Property’S Negative Space, Cathay Y. N. Smith Jun 2014

“Copyright Is For Losers©™”: Street Art Flourishes In Intellectual Property’S Negative Space, Cathay Y. N. Smith

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal (AELJ) Blog

To exist in intellectual property’s “negative space” is characterized as existing in “the territory where IP law might regulate, but (perhaps for accidental or nonessential reasons) does not.” ((Kal Raustiala and Christopher Sprigman, Response, The Piracy Paradox Revisited, 61 Stan. L. Rev. 1201 (2009) )) There are many well-known examples of successful creative industries that exist in intellectual property’s negative space, such as fashion, stand-up comedy, food/cuisine, and American football. This post suggests that “street art” is successfully existing, operating and flourishing in intellectual property’s negative space.

This post was originally published on the Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal …

Impact Of Organizational Culture And Technology On Firm Performance In The Service Sector, Nathaniel C. Ozigbo

Communications of the IIMA

This study focuses on the way organizational culture is adopted for exploring the relationship of firm performance. The primary objective is to explore the relationship between organizational culture and information technology effectiveness with reference to firm performance. The performance of the firm was measured using the dependent variables, return on assets (ROA) and Earning Per Share (EPS), obtained from the annual reports of the listed services industries in Nigeria. The random sample generated 200 usable responses. All the four cultural types adopted in the study had influence on the return on assets and earnings per share. The result of the …

Immigrant Diversity And Host Country Acculturation In Leader-Member Dyads, Monica M. Sharif Jun 2014

Immigrant Diversity And Host Country Acculturation In Leader-Member Dyads, Monica M. Sharif

Open Access Dissertations

Leadership scholars have investigated the importance of leader-member dyads for several years. However, research has largely omitted the consideration of immigrant diversity with regards to leader-member relationships and outcomes in the organization. The US has experienced an influx of talented immigrants that are joining the workforce and, therefore, important to today’s economy. In a sample of two organizations, one based in South America, and another headquartered in Miami, Florida, I propose two models. One model examines the role of country of origin incongruence and LMX and the other examines the role of host country acculturation and LMX. Immigrants come from …

A Graph-Theoretic Approach To Improved Curriculum Structure And Assessment Placement, Jay M. Lightfoot Jun 2014

A Graph-Theoretic Approach To Improved Curriculum Structure And Assessment Placement, Jay M. Lightfoot

Communications of the IIMA

Assurance of student learning is an important issue in modern education. Accrediting bodies and government entities alike have begun requiring proof that students actually learn the material taught in the classroom. To comply with this mandate, education programs are actively engaged in incorporating assessment procedures into their curricula. Unfortunately, there are no generally agreed upon methods on how to do this. This paper addresses the issue and answers several key questions concerning where to locate topic coverage, assessment data collection, and corrective action within the curriculum. The approach described and developed in this paper cast the curriculum problem into an …

Convergent Evolution Of Aquatic Foraging In A New Genus And Species (Rodentia: Muridae) From Sulawesi Island, Indonesia, Kevin C. Rowe, Anang S. Achmadi, Jacob A. Esselstyn Jun 2014

Convergent Evolution Of Aquatic Foraging In A New Genus And Species (Rodentia: Muridae) From Sulawesi Island, Indonesia, Kevin C. Rowe, Anang S. Achmadi, Jacob A. Esselstyn

Faculty Publications

The island of Sulawesi, in Indonesia, lies at the crossroads of the Indo-Australian Archipelago and has remained isolated from the Asian (Sunda) and Australian (Sahul) continental shelves for at least the last 10 million years. Of the 50 native species of rodents on Sulawesi, all are endemic and represent the evolution of a variety of ecological and morphological forms within the Muridae and Sciuridae. Carnivorous rodents have evolved, perhaps independently, in Muridae from the Philippines, Sulawesi, and Sahul, but semi-aquatic murids are only known from Sahul. Here we describe a new genus and species of insectivorous water rat from Sulawesi. …

How To Introduce Experiential User Data: The Use Of Information In Architects' Design Process, Margo Annemans, Chantal Van Audenhove, Hilde Vermolen, Ann Heylighen Jun 2014

How To Introduce Experiential User Data: The Use Of Information In Architects' Design Process, Margo Annemans, Chantal Van Audenhove, Hilde Vermolen, Ann Heylighen

DRS Biennial Conference Series

As architecture influences people’s daily life considerably, architects need in-depth insights in people’s spatial perception, needs, and desires. To be able to provide them with sufficient and suitable information on these matters we aim to investigate how architects currently use information in design, and how experiential user data could change their thinking about their projects and way of working. We conducted two focus group interviews with architects (designing healthcare buildings), each covering two parts. First, we discussed information use and knowledge generation during design. This resulted in a better understanding of a design process’ iterative nature with shifts in information …

Aspects Of Research Through Design: A Literature Review, Danny Godin, Mithra Zahedi Jun 2014

Aspects Of Research Through Design: A Literature Review, Danny Godin, Mithra Zahedi

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Research through design is, by nature, embedded in the design process. In other words, while its main concern is to inform a research question, it also must be concerned with the end product of the design. As such, designers/researchers become concerned with the same type of “wicked problems” the professional designers are, especially when using research through design. Moreover, they also add a new layer of complications that are inherent to research. Since the approach is quickly gaining in popularity, it is necessary to develop a base of knowledge about it. Thus, this paper’s aim is to present a literature …

Creating Organisational Knowledge Through Strategic Business Model Design, Luke Feast Jun 2014

Creating Organisational Knowledge Through Strategic Business Model Design, Luke Feast

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Innovation requires teams to create knowledge through integrating insights from different domains. However, the innovative power that interdisciplinary approaches bring can also increase complexity. Consequently, collaboration is required to support design activity. I take the position that while Horst Rittel’s argumentative approach provides a crucial point of departure for understanding collaborative design, the tools and methods developed within this research stream have remained focused on capturing design decisions to act as a memory aid. In contrast, I argue that the argumentative approach to design should aim to create organisational knowledge through critical inquiry. Drawing on insights from a recent empirical …
