From 4-H International Youth Exchange To Global Citizen: Common Pathways Of Ten Past Program Participants, Mary E. Arnold, Jamie Davis, Aimee L. Corliss
From 4-H International Youth Exchange To Global Citizen: Common Pathways Of Ten Past Program Participants, Mary E. Arnold, Jamie Davis, Aimee L. Corliss
Journal of Youth Development
This qualitative study examined the life course of ten adults who participated as youth in the 4-H International Exchange program. The purpose of this research was to explore the pathways that led each participant to their exchange experience as a youth and how that experience set the stage for further development into an adulthood marked by cultural interest, awareness, competence and global citizenship. Using a grounded theory approach the data were analyzed through selective, open, and axial codings that elucidated a series of key events, opportunities, and qualities that form a common pathway among all participants. The results of this …
Prosociality And The Military, Alexander J. Field
Prosociality And The Military, Alexander J. Field
Economics
In this paper, I consider a body of observational evidence not commonly studied by social scientists, namely the behavior of men and women (mostly men) in the military. I focus here on two issues: first the behavioral foundations for creating an effective military unit and second, evidence that infantrymen have historically been reluctant to fire on the enemy and how this reluctance has been overcome in the last half century through changes in military training. The evidence in each of these areas reinforces the appeal of the idea of cognitive modularity, the view that thought and behavior are influenced by …
Product Of The Past: The Struggle Between The Lakota Sioux Nation And The United States Government, Brittany Lombardo
Product Of The Past: The Struggle Between The Lakota Sioux Nation And The United States Government, Brittany Lombardo
Pell Scholars and Senior Theses
Many may be familiar with the national landmark that is Mount Rushmore, located in South Dakota. The heroes represent the leaders of the United States, the founding fathers. However, it shadows a rich history that is what came before the United States' invasion. The Lakota Sioux roamed freely throughout the Midwest, that is until the the US began to expand westward. The rich history of the Lakota lingers throughout their lives today, but is suppressed under a thick lair of oppression and mistreatment by the United States Government.
American Blood: Who Is Counting And For What?, Gerald Torres
American Blood: Who Is Counting And For What?, Gerald Torres
Cornell Law Faculty Publications
When thinking about "who counts," I initially titled this Essay: "Who is Counting and for What?" I wanted to highlight the role that power necessarily plays in the very asking of the question. It presumes a perspective, and interrogating that perspective can only occur if the second part of the question is answered. Because race has always played a critical role in our culture from the very beginning, I wanted to explore one of the many ways it has been deployed to justify a particular expression of power. The story virtually every American learns is the story of the inevitable …
Converlogical Management Theory: Towards The Development Of The Communicative Competence Of An Organization, Marife C. Posadas
Converlogical Management Theory: Towards The Development Of The Communicative Competence Of An Organization, Marife C. Posadas
DLSU Business & Economics Review
Management practice has been evolving from a very rigid and behavioristic practice into something more flexible and humanistic. Critical Management Studies (CMS) is, partly, inspiring such move. In the same vein, I attempted to combine and “mutually animate” Management by Objective (MBO) popularized by great management guru Peter Drucker and the Theory of Communicative Action (TCA) by Jurgen Habermas. The result of which is a novel management theory called “Converlogical” (Conversational/Dialogical) Management Theory. I used concept analysis and deductive approach on various materials to build the theory. The whole MBO process was animated by embedding the validity claims of Habermas’ …
Assessing The Archaeological Resources Of Mormon Nauvoo With Three-Dimensional Geophysical Imaging, John H. Mcbride
Assessing The Archaeological Resources Of Mormon Nauvoo With Three-Dimensional Geophysical Imaging, John H. Mcbride
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The principal objective of the project was to provide BYU students with the experience of exploring Nauvoo using ground-penetrating radar (GPR) in order to gain a better appreciation of early Mormon history from a geophysical and archaeological perspective. The objective was met by carrying out two field seasons in Nauvoo. In addition, the grant partially funded a field expedition to the LDS Far West Burying Grounds and Hawn’s Mill sites in Missouri in order to perform surveying work analogous to that performed in Nauvoo. Additional funding for this project was provided by the LDS Church History Department, which allowed more …

The Create Strategy For Intensive Analysis Of Primary Literature Can Be Used Effectively By Newly Trained Faculty To Produce Multiple Gains In Diverse Students, Leslie M. Stevens, Sally G. Hoskins
Publications and Research
The CREATE (Consider Read, Elucidate the hypotheses, Analyze and interpret the data, and Think of the next Experiment) strategy aims to demystify scientific research and scientists while building critical thinking, reading/analytical skills, and improved science attitudes through intensive analysis of primary literature. CREATE was developed and piloted at the City College of New York (CCNY), a 4-yr, minority-serving institution, with both upper-level biology majors and first-year students interested in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. To test the extent to which CREATE strategies are broadly applicable to students at private, public, research-intensive, and/or primarily undergraduate colleges/universities, we trained a cohort of …

Life Stress, Religiosity, And Personal Adjustment Of Indonesian As International Students, Bonar Hutapea
Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia
Understanding adaptation problem in international context is necessary as a source from which host universities formulate support services and counseling provision as well as for preparation before departure for international students. Although research on adjustment has burgeoned over the past several decades, relatively little is known about overseas student, particularly among Indonesian students as expatriates in some countries around the world. The present study is intended to examine the relationship of their life stress, religiosity, and adjustment. Data from 96 Indonesian international students were collected using demographic questions, personal adjustment scale, religiosity scale, and Index of Life Stress. Results revealed …

Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia
This study attempts to assess and understand the exploitations of girls who are forced into prostitution in the sex industry through critical theory perspective. The study was conducted in Surabaya and in a touristic area Tretes, Pasuruan. Overall, the in-depth interviews were conducted to 45 informants, girls who are forced into prostitution, former young prostitutes, pimps, and also male customers. In fact, their involvements is the impact of the …
Variation In Responses Of Individual Farmers To Uniformity Program, Ni Nyoman Sri Natih Sudhiatiningsih
Variation In Responses Of Individual Farmers To Uniformity Program, Ni Nyoman Sri Natih Sudhiatiningsih
Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia
This manuscript describes the phenomenon of variation in farmers’ individual responses to the realization of “top-down” government policy implemented during regional autonomy. The study aims to understand the process of social change as well as other theoretical problems with attention to contextual factors of the emergence of such variations. Individuals are active agents in interpreting phenomena and make decisions. Using an ethnographic approach and progressive contextualization, I am able to describe the variation in responses of Kahuman village farmers, Polanharjo Subdistrict, Klaten Regency, when Inpari 13 Programme was carried out. During the growing season of Inpari 13 in 2011, Kahuman’s …
Communication, Romantic Reconciliation, And Emerging Adulthood: A Relational Dialectics Study, Ashley M. Poole
Communication, Romantic Reconciliation, And Emerging Adulthood: A Relational Dialectics Study, Ashley M. Poole
Communication & Theatre Arts Theses
Building on the extant research of on-again/off-again (on-off) romantic relationships, the current thesis focused on building upon past findings by utilizing a unique theoretical methodology in an emerging demographic. A sample of 22 emergent adult (ages 18-29) participants who were currently in or had recently experienced an on-off relationship completed face-to-face interviews discussing communicative processes during romantic reconciliation. The primary purpose of this thesis was to identify and define discursive struggles found within on-off relationships during reconciliation attempts, and understand how they are used between partners to give meaning to the terms "on" and "off" as a precursor to restructuring …

The Effects Of Cooperative Grouping Strategies And A Three-Level Evaluation Tool On Student Soft Skills Achievement And Satisfaction Within A Problem-Based Instructional Model In The Soft Sciences, Kelly Stoneman Rippard
The Effects Of Cooperative Grouping Strategies And A Three-Level Evaluation Tool On Student Soft Skills Achievement And Satisfaction Within A Problem-Based Instructional Model In The Soft Sciences, Kelly Stoneman Rippard
Teaching & Learning Theses & Dissertations
In education, many academic majors can fall within one of two main concentrations: the hard or soft sciences. The hard sciences are defined as the natural sciences and include subjects such as Engineering, Chemistry, and Biology while the soft sciences are defined as the social sciences and include subjects such as English, Sociology, and Anthropology. While instructional approaches have been created to help instructors teach and students learn within each of the scientific areas, few studies have sought to see if instructional approaches from one of the sciences can be used in the other. One such instructional approach is the …
