Deconstructing The Critical Theory Archive At Uci: An Experiment With Eac-Cpf And Linked Open Data, Sara Renée Seltzer, Alexandra M. Bisio, Shu Liu
Journal of Western Archives
The University of California, Irvine (UCI) Libraries has begun a pilot project exploring the use of Encoded Archival Context-Corporate Bodies, Persons, and Families (EAC-CPF) and linked open data to expose contextual information about holdings in UCI's Critical Theory Archive (CTA). The project team has identified a number of goals emphasizing public service, sustainability, and scalable experimentation. This work-in-progress article reports the pilot's background, scope, status through July 2014, and future plans.
“Jimbin Kaboo Yimardoowarra Marninil” – Listening To Nyikina Women’S Voices, From The Inside To The Outside: An Inter-Generational Journey Of Cultural Actions, Economic, And Self-Determination Initiatives On Nyikina Country Through Film, Magali Mcduffie
Talking Heads Seminar Series
Magali’s doctoral research has come about as a result of her professional involvement as a filmmaker with Aboriginal communities over the past nine years, particularly with Nyikina women in the Kimberley. In her thesis, “Jimbin Kaboo Yimardoowarra Marninil – listening to Nyikina women, from the inside to the outside: an inter-generational journey of cultural actions, economic and self-determination initiatives on Nyikina country through film” she explores Nyikina women’s aspirations for sustainable community development, their engagement with, or disengagement from, the state apparatus, and the strategies of resistance and alternatives they have developed over the years in response to the failure …

Internet Use For Health Information Among American Indians: Facilitators And Inhibitors, Melissa K. Filippi, Christina M. Pacheco, Charlotte Mccloskey, Rebecca Jeanne Crosthwait, Justin Begaye, Jb Kinlacheeny, Won S. Choi, K Allen Greiner, Christine M. Daley
Internet Use For Health Information Among American Indians: Facilitators And Inhibitors, Melissa K. Filippi, Christina M. Pacheco, Charlotte Mccloskey, Rebecca Jeanne Crosthwait, Justin Begaye, Jb Kinlacheeny, Won S. Choi, K Allen Greiner, Christine M. Daley
Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
Our research team explored Internet use among a heterogeneous American Indian (AI) population to determine Internet use in relation to health information seeking behaviors. Participants examined an AI culturally-tailored tobacco website as an example to explain what they wanted in an AI Internet health site. Using community-based participatory research, we conducted 10 focus groups with non-college AI men and women (N=96), stratified by age (18-29, 30-49, and 50 and over) to better understand their perceptions of Internet use and health information needs. We found that Internet use varied greatly among all strata. Participants referenced WebMD© more than any other …

American Indian Men's Perceptions Of Breast Cancer Screening For American Indian Women, Melissa K. Filippi, Joseph Pacheco, Aimee S. James, Travis Brown, Florence Ndikum-Moffor, Won S. Choi, K Allen Greiner, Christine M. Daley
Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
Screening, especially screening mammography, is vital for decreasing breast cancer incidence and mortality. Screening rates in American Indian women are low compared to other racial/ethnic groups. In addition, American Indian women are diagnosed at more advanced stages and have lower 5-year survival rate than others. To better address the screening rates of American Indian women, focus groups (N=8) were conducted with American Indian men (N=42) to explore their perceptions of breast cancer screening for American Indian women. Our intent was to understand men’s support level toward screening. Using a community-based participatory approach, focus groups were audio-taped, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed …

David Greene Is Called To Action, Ruth Jacobs
David Greene Is Called To Action, Ruth Jacobs
Colby Magazine
Not long after the Board of Trustees named David A. Greene Colby's 20th president, in September 2013, word spread that Greene wanted to increase the number of applicants- by a lot. Doubling applications, which he suggested, would be a dramatic shift for a college that typically sees single-digit growth in applications.
The University of Chicago, where Greene recently served as executive vice president, has tripled its number of applicants since Greene's (and President Robert Zimmer's) arrival in 2006, resulting in a more diverse student body by key measures- socioeconomic, racial, ethnic, and geographic. It has also soared in the rankings, …

N-acetyltransferase 2 (NAT2) is an important enzyme involved in the metabolism of a wide spectrum of naturally occurring xenobiotics, including therapeutic drugs and common environmental carcinogens. Extensive polymorphism in NAT2 gives rise to a wide interindividual variation in acetylation capacity which influences individual susceptibility to various drug-induced adverse reactions and cancers. Striking patterns of geographic differentiation have been described for the main slow acetylation variants of the NAT2 gene, suggesting the action of natural selection at this locus. In the present study, we took advantage of the whole-genome sequence data available from the 1000 Genomes project to investigate the …

The Delta Test: The 1-Nn Estimator As A Feature Selection Criterion, Emil Eirola, Amaury Lendasse, Francesco Corona, Michel Verleysen
Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Feature Selection is Essential in Many Machines Learning Problem, But It is Often Not Clear on Which Grounds Variables Should Be Included or Excluded. This Paper Shows that the Mean Squared Leave-One-Out Error of the First Nearest-Neighbour Estimator is Effective as a Cost Function When Selecting Input Variables for Regression Tasks. a Theoretical Analysis of the Estimator's Properties is Presented to Support its Use for Feature Selection. an Experimental Comparison to Alternative Selection Criteria (Including Mutual Information, Least Angle Regression, and the Rrelieff Algorithm) Demonstrates Reliable Performance on Several Regression Tasks.

Plyler Children: 21st Century Challenges With Judicial-Policy Implementation Affecting Immigrant Children In New Jersey, Christine T. Brenner, Kirk A. Leach, David Tulloch
Plyler Children: 21st Century Challenges With Judicial-Policy Implementation Affecting Immigrant Children In New Jersey, Christine T. Brenner, Kirk A. Leach, David Tulloch
Journal of Public Management & Social Policy
Denying unauthorized immigrant children access to a free public education through incomplete judicial policy implementation may lead to an illiterate underclass. Communicating, implementing, and enforcing Plyler v. Doe school registration documentation requirements continue to be difficult at the district level. In 2008, an ACLU study in New Jersey found that 187 of 516 school districts were mandating inappropriate documentation from parents registering their children. Separation of powers requires that executive agencies proactively implement transformative judicial decisions.

Facilitating College Success Among Emerging Hispanic Serving Institutions: Multiple Perspectives Yield Commonly Shared Diversity Goals, Susan T. Gooden, Kasey J. Martin
Journal of Public Management & Social Policy
Although colleges must have a full‐time Latino student enrollment of at least 25 percent to federally qualify as a Hispanic Serving Institution, colleges with a Latino student enrollment of 15‐24 percent are commonly referred to as “Emerging Hispanic Serving Institutions.” As more community colleges approach such Latino student enrollment percentages, the changing demographic presents opportunities and challenges relative to diversity. It is important to equip community college administrators, all of whom are public administrators, to effectively manage their changing institutions and promote student success. Utilizing a qualitative approach, this article analyzes multiple perspectives on factors related to Latino student success. …
