The Nebraska Natural Legacy Project recognizes the Western Massasauga (Sistrurus tergeminus) as a Tier I at-risk species. Provided are some general management recommendations regarding Western Massasaugas. Conservation practitioners will need to use professional judgment to make specific management decisions based on objectives, location, and a multitude of variables. This resource was designed to share available knowledge of this at-risk species that will aid in the decision-making process or …

“The Valley Of The Shadow Of Books”: George Gissing, New Women, And Morbid Literary Detachment, Marisa Palacios Knox Jun 2014

“The Valley Of The Shadow Of Books”: George Gissing, New Women, And Morbid Literary Detachment, Marisa Palacios Knox

Literatures and Cultural Studies Faculty Publications

Victorian consternation about the physiological—especially reproductive—repercussions of women readers’ affective involvement with fiction is well documented. This essay contends, however, that at the fin de siècle a new cultural anxiety developed around the possibility of the woman who under-identifies, that is, refuses or is simply incapable of a stereotypically feminine standard of personal identification with literature. As the number of women entering vocational training as well as higher education increased exponentially in the late nineteenth century, the threat of women’s influx into the workplace expressed itself in a discourse of concern for the vitiation of women’s “natural” responsiveness to reading …

Specific Yoga Practices And Mindful Eating Habits Among New And Experienced Yoga Practitioners, Shauna E. Keeler

Theses - ALL

Current research suggests that yoga practitioners are more mindful eaters, consume more fruits and vegetables and gain less weight over time when compared to individuals who do not practice yoga. This study aimed to determine the relationship between mindful eating habits and yoga practice in terms of how they are related to dietary quality. To determine the relationship between these factors, a 51-item survey was developed and distributed to a yoga studio in Syracuse, New York. The survey asked for information on typical yoga practices, mindful eating habits and dietary habits using a brief food frequency questionnaire. The responses from …

In Vivo Imaging Of Human Cone Photoreceptor Inner Segments, Drew Scoles, Yusufu N. Sulai, Christopher S. Langlo, Gerald A. Fishman, Christine A. Curcio, Joseph Carroll, Alfredo Dubra

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Purpose.

An often overlooked prerequisite to cone photoreceptor gene therapy development is residual photoreceptor structure that can be rescued. While advances in adaptive optics (AO) retinal imaging have recently enabled direct visualization of individual cone and rod photoreceptors in the living human retina, these techniques largely detect strongly directionally-backscattered (waveguided) light from normal intact photoreceptors. This represents a major limitation in using existing AO imaging to quantify structure of remnant cones in degenerating retina.

Methods.

Photoreceptor inner segment structure was assessed with a novel AO scanning light ophthalmoscopy (AOSLO) differential phase technique, that we termed nonconfocal split-detector, in two healthy …

Infectious diseases in fighting armies are a pestilence as old as war itself. The history of the United States military is rich in successes of innovation and lessons learned in failure in the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases. Over the nearly two and a half centuries of American warfare, military research and development have contributed greatly to advancements in vaccines, medical treatments, and other control and prevention strategies for tropical and other infectious diseases. Current deployments in desert environments have provided continued research and progress in infectious disease control, treatment, and prevention, despite a relative decrease in civilian medical …

Rapid Battery Exchange Safety And Sensing, Ben John Froelich, Isaac Sungjin Kim Jun 2014

Rapid Battery Exchange Safety And Sensing, Ben John Froelich, Isaac Sungjin Kim

Electrical Engineering

The Rapid Battery Exchange system (RBX) swaps batteries in an electric van, allowing almost continuous operation of the vehicle. The RBX system is designed and built by The Cal Poly Electric Vehicle Engineering Club (EVEC). The system includes the exchange ramp, two battery packs, and the electric “G-Van.” While the vehicle drives using one of the battery packs, the other pack charges in the exchange ramp. When the van’s battery depletes, it drives onto the ramp and swaps the dead battery for the charged one, and the process repeats.

The RBX battery pack safety and sensing project divides into two …

Wind And Ventilation Turbine (Wvt) Generator, Anthony Lloyd, Jacob Michener Jun 2014

Wind And Ventilation Turbine (Wvt) Generator, Anthony Lloyd, Jacob Michener

Electrical Engineering

This project aims to create a more compact and accessible renewable energy source using the Wind and Ventilation Turbine (WVT) Generator. The wind turbine provides ventilation while generating “clean” electricity using solar and kinetic energy. The electrical generation causes no functional losses to the ventilation as rising heat and passing wind turn the turbine, ventilating the house. Placing a generator beneath the spinning turbine allows for the transformation of mechanical motion into electrical energy. The system charges a battery, supplying recharging power into small standard electronics (i.e. cell phones, tablets, etc.) through a USB output.

Masters Theses

A preliminary study that utilized the calcified regions of the eyestalks and gastric mills of decapod crustaceans for chronological age determination. The procedure is based on the traditional method for growth analysis of concentric growth bands in otoliths, shells, and genital plates. Transverse cross sections of the eyestalks and prepyloric, pyloric, and zygocardiac ossicles of the gastric mills of Orconectes propinquus and Procambarus clarkii crayfish showed the presence of alternating dark and light growth bands. These growth bands were recorded as a finer secondary series of growth bands found within the broader primary growth bands. Size modal comparisons showed that …

Certain Adenylated Non-Coding Rnas, Including 5′ Leader Sequences Of Primary Microrna Transcripts, Accumulate In Mouse Cells Following Depletion Of The Rna Helicase Mtr4, Jane E. Dorweiler, Ting Ni, Jun Zhu, Stephen Munroe, James T. Anderson

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

RNA surveillance plays an important role in posttranscriptional regulation. Seminal work in this field has largely focused on yeast as a model system, whereas exploration of RNA surveillance in mammals is only recently begun. The increased transcriptional complexity of mammalian systems provides a wider array of targets for RNA surveillance, and, while many questions remain unanswered, emerging data suggest the nuclear RNA surveillance machinery exhibits increased complexity as well. We have used a small interfering RNA in mouse N2A cells to target the homolog of a yeast protein that functions in RNA surveillance (Mtr4p). We used high-throughput sequencing of polyadenylated …

Forestry Professionals And Extension Educators Vs. Climate Change: Implications For Cooperative Extension Programming, Christopher Jones, Melanie Lenart Jun 2014

Forestry Professionals And Extension Educators Vs. Climate Change: Implications For Cooperative Extension Programming, Christopher Jones, Melanie Lenart

Journal of Extension

Extension educators seeking to integrate climate science into programming must respect different perceptions on climate change. We surveyed forestland managers and owners, researchers, and Extension educators nationally to compare perceptions about climate change adaptation and mitigation management in forests (n=576). Despite differences in perception that climate change is anthropogenic, we found the professional groups were often statistically similar in supporting or rejecting specific actions and receptive to learning more about a variety of forest adaptation and mitigation practices. Our findings support a role for Extension in addressing climate change and indicate areas of common ground that can minimize contention.

Changing The Wind: Notes Toward A Demosprudence Of Law And Social Movements, Lani Guinier, Gerald Torres Jun 2014

Changing The Wind: Notes Toward A Demosprudence Of Law And Social Movements, Lani Guinier, Gerald Torres

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

This essay was influenced by a class on Law and Social Movements that Professors Guinier and Torres taught at the Yale Law School in 2011. This essay was also informed by numerous conversations with Bruce Ackerman regarding his book that is under review in this Symposium. While we are in fundamental agreement with Professor Ackerman’s project, as well as the claims he makes as to the new constitutional canon, we supplement his analysis with the overlooked impact of the lawmaking potential of social movements. In particular, we focus on those social movements that were critical to the legal changes that …

American Shudders: Race, Representation, And Sodomy In Redburn, David Greven Jun 2014

American Shudders: Race, Representation, And Sodomy In Redburn, David Greven

Faculty Publications

Newer critical treatments of Redburn argue that its significance lies in its critique of antebellum slavery, most saliently in chapter 31, in which Wellingborough Redburn, the first-person narrator, offers an ekphrastic depiction of the Nelson Monument in Liverpool, England. This monument contains an especially significant detail: the four naked, chained male figures at the base of the pedestal. Redburn tells us that he can never look at their “swarthy limbs and manacles, without being involuntarily reminded of four African slaves in the market-place.” The abjection of the figures is significant for understanding not only issues of race and slavery but …

Steroid Hormone Regulation Of Fetal Mouse Oocyte Development, Sudipta Dutta Jun 2014

Steroid Hormone Regulation Of Fetal Mouse Oocyte Development, Sudipta Dutta

Dissertations - ALL

The factors governing maintenance of the non-renewable reservoir of primordial follicles in female mammals remain largely elusive. During the early stages of fetal development, oocytes grow in nests or clusters known as germ cell cysts. Cysts break down into individual oocytes in the perinatal period and become enclosed by somatic pregranulosa cells to form primordial follicles. Steroid hormones have been shown by numerous studies to be one of the important factors which critically govern the process of

cyst breakdown and follicle formation. There has been earlier evidence from this laboratory to indicate that exogenous exposure of neonatal mice ovaries to …

Relationship Between Jump Landing Kinematics And Peak Acl Force During A Jump In Downhill Skiing: A Simulation Study, D. Heinrich, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert, W. Nachbauer

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Recent data highlight that competitive skiers face a high risk of injuries especially during off-balance jump landing maneuvers in downhill skiing. The purpose of the present study was to develop a musculo-skeletal modeling and simulation approach to investigate the cause-and-effect relationship between a perturbed landing position, i.e., joint angles and trunk orientation, and the peak force in the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during jump landing. A two-dimensional musculo-skeletal model was developed and a baseline simulation was obtained reproducing measurement data of a reference landing movement. Based on the baseline simulation, a series of perturbed landing simulations (n=1000) was generated. Multiple …

ECS designs are based off of the concepts Composition over inheritance in which objects contain features …

Environmental Law Outside The Canon, Todd S. Aagaard Jun 2014

Environmental Law Outside The Canon, Todd S. Aagaard

Faculty Publications

It is time to rethink the domination of environmental law by a canon of major federal statutes enacted in the 1970s. Environmental law is in a malaise. Despite widespread agreement that existing laws are inadequate to address current environmental problems, Congress has not passed a major environmental statute in more than twenty years. If it is to succeed, the environmental law of this new century may need to evolve into something that looks quite different than the extant environmental law canon. The next generation of environmental laws must be viable for creation and implementation even in an antagonistic political climate; …
