Mrcv: A Package For Analyzing Categorical Variables With Multiple Response Options, Natalie A. Koziol, Christopher R. Bilder Jun 2014

Mrcv: A Package For Analyzing Categorical Variables With Multiple Response Options, Natalie A. Koziol, Christopher R. Bilder

The R Journal

Multiple response categorical variables (MRCVs), also known as “pick any” or “choose all that apply” variables, summarize survey questions for which respondents are allowed to select more than one category response option. Traditional methods for analyzing the association between categorical variables are not appropriate with MRCVs due to the within-subject dependence among responses. We have developed the MRCV package as the first R package available to correctly analyze MRCVdata. Statistical methods offered by our package include counterparts to traditional Pearson chi-square tests for independence and loglinear models, where bootstrap methods and Rao-Scott adjustments are relied on to obtain valid inferences. …

2014 Nou/Iou Joint Meeting In Bellevue, Clem Klaphake Jun 2014

2014 Nou/Iou Joint Meeting In Bellevue, Clem Klaphake

Nebraska Bird Review

The May 16–18 combined meeting of the Nebraska Ornithologists' Union and the Iowa Ornithologists' Union at Fontenelle Forest Nature Center in Bellevue, Nebraska, was a gigantic success. Over 160 birders from Nebraska, Iowa, and 6 other states attended the 3 day event. Everyone I talked to, from novice to expert, was more than delighted with all of the activities scheduled for this event.

Our Friday evening speaker, Ty Smedes, had some wonderful photos, especially of warblers, and I heard nothing but positive comments about his program from the attendees. On Saturday afternoon Jerry Toll talked about his experiences banding Red-tailed …

Spring Field Report, March 2014 To May 2014, W. Ross Silcock

Nebraska Bird Review

This spring period was generally uneventful for most species groups, but there were two major influxes in the east that were likely unprecedented in the memories of most Nebraska ornithologists. First was a major influx of gulls of 10 species at Carter Lake and N.P. Dodge Park in Omaha, including good numbers of California and Thayer's Gulls, as well as Iceland, and most surprisingly, a Glaucous-winged Gull. A bit later in the season was a strong influx of the rarer migrant warblers, such as Golden-winged, Blue-winged, Hooded, Cape May, Bay-breasted, and Black-throated Blue. For spice there was a Worm-eating Warbler …

Seeing Beyond Play: The Immersive Witness In Video Games, Sarah Beth Evans Jun 2014

Seeing Beyond Play: The Immersive Witness In Video Games, Sarah Beth Evans

Theses - ALL

Ian Bogost's 2011 book How to Do Things with Video Games seeks to "reveal a small portion of the many uses of video games and how together they make the medium broader, richer, and more relevant (p. 7). I aspire to join Bogost's conversation by offering another use for video games--the video game as a site of immersive witnessing. To showcase how witnessing can be meaningfully utilized in video games, I present case studies of two vastly disparate games: commercial entertainment game Telltale's The Walking Dead and not-for-profit game Half the Sky Movement: The Game. My method of analysis traces …

The Relationships Between Diet, Physical Activity And Dual Plane (3d) Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (Dxa) Bone Outcomes In Pre-Pubertal Girls, Jie Ren Jun 2014

The Relationships Between Diet, Physical Activity And Dual Plane (3d) Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (Dxa) Bone Outcomes In Pre-Pubertal Girls, Jie Ren

Theses - ALL

Osteoporotic fractures are a leading cause of morbidity in the U.S. Bone mass levels during childhood play a key role in determining peak bone mass and hence the risk of osteoporosis in later life. The aim of the study was to evaluate how key bone nutrients and organized physical activity affect bone outcomes in pre-pubertal girls using Dual Plane Dual X-Ray Absorptiometry (DXA). This cross-sectional analysis used a subset of participants (n=50) from a longitudinal study of bone growth in relation to physical activity. Dietary data were collected using the Youth/Adolescent Questionnaire (YAQ, 1995) and organized activity was recorded semi-annually …

PREP Reports & Publications

Introduced species (i.e., non-native species that have become established in a new location) have increasingly been recognized as a concern as they have become more prevalent in marine and terrestrial environments (Mooney and Cleland 2001; Simberloff et al. 2005). The ability of introduced species to alter population, community, and ecosystem structure and function, as well as cause significant economic damage is well documented (Carlton 1989, 1996b, 2000; Cohen and Carlton 1995; Cohen et al. 1995; Elton 1958; Meinesz et al. 1993; Occhipinti-Ambrogi and Sheppard 2007; Pimentel et al. 2005; Thresher 2000). Parb Spreading Requires Dna Bridging, Thomas G.W. Graham, Xindan Wang, Dan Song, Candice M. Etson, Antoine M. Van Oijen, David Z. Rudner, Joseph J. Loparo Jun 2014

Parb Spreading Requires Dna Bridging, Thomas G.W. Graham, Xindan Wang, Dan Song, Candice M. Etson, Antoine M. Van Oijen, David Z. Rudner, Joseph J. Loparo

Physics: Faculty Publications

The parABS system is a widely employed mechanism for plasmid partitioning and chromosome segregation in bacteria. ParB binds to parS sites on plasmids and chromosomes and associates with broad regions of adjacent DNA, a phenomenon known as spreading. Although essential for ParB function, the mechanism of spreading remains poorly understood. Using single-molecule approaches, we discovered that Bacillus subtilis ParB (Spo0J) is able to trap DNA loops. Point mutants in Spo0J that disrupt DNA bridging are defective in spreading and recruitment of structural maintenance of chromosomes (SMC) condensin complexes in vivo. DNA bridging helps to explain how a limited number of …

Computer Engineering

Looped is a crowd-sourced music-making iOS application. It is designed to bring friends together through creating melodies by looping mp3 samples. A user will choose a sound from the Looped sound database, loop that sound however he or she chooses, and then post it to their friends. The next user can then pick another sound, and loop that sound on top of the previously posted loop, creating an overlay of sound samples. The sound database is comprised of mp3’s provided by the creators of Patatap. Patatap is a simple online interface for playing sounds with your computer keyboard.

Ultraviolet Led Biofouling Mitigation, Andrew Lam Jun 2014

Ultraviolet Led Biofouling Mitigation, Andrew Lam

Computer Engineering

The goal is to determine if low-cost UV LEDs can mitigate marine biofouling on small glass or acrylic camera lenses. A microprocessor-controlled experimental setup to control the illumination of low-cost UV LEDs of various wavelength and packaging was fashioned. The system consists of a programmed microcontroller, a manufactured LED breakout interface, and a submergible UV LED array enclosed in a borosilicate glass tube. A preliminary qualitative assessment of four different UV LEDs was conducted during a three-week deployment of the experimental setup in the raw seawater system at the Cal Poly Center for Costal and Marine Sciences in Avila Beach, …

Psychology Faculty Works

Marital stress is associated with a higher incidence of psychiatric disorders, in particular major depression. One pathway through which marital stress may impact emotional health is by compromising emotion-responding processes. We examined a longitudinal sample of adults (N = 116; 59 males; 39–84 years) to verify how marital stress predicts reactivity to, and recovery from, emotional provocation. Individuals watched positive, neutral, and negative pictures while an objective measure of affective state, corrugator supercilii muscle activity, was recorded continuously. Our results indicate that marital stress is associated with short-lived responses to positive pictures, indexed by a less persistent decrease in corrugator …

Spirit Babies And Divine Embodiment: Pbes, First Vision Accounts, Bible Scholarship, And The Experience-Centered Approach To Mormon Folklore, Eric A. Eliason Jun 2014

Spirit Babies And Divine Embodiment: Pbes, First Vision Accounts, Bible Scholarship, And The Experience-Centered Approach To Mormon Folklore, Eric A. Eliason

BYU Studies

Eric A. Eliason, a BYU Professor of English who specializes in folklore, explores the phenomenon of prebirth experiences (encounters with spirit children not yet born) and how this folk tradition is deeply enmeshed with official LDS doctrines. Encounters with spiritual beings are reported more frequently in the general population than the more academically respectable mystic or transcendent states of notable people in various religious traditions. In fact, rather than sensationalizing a mystic experience by presenting it as tangible, scholars find that people more likely to obfuscate or "mystify" what were originally straightforward meetings with personlike beings. Eliason suggests that an …

Patterns Of Contemporary Ijtihad In Malaysia: Analysis On Fatwas Of Malaysian National Fatwa Council, S. Man Jun 2014

Patterns Of Contemporary Ijtihad In Malaysia: Analysis On Fatwas Of Malaysian National Fatwa Council, S. Man

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

The exercise of ijtihad (independent reasoning by qualified jurist) has been a siginificant process in the development of Islamic Law as witnessed throughout the history of Muslim society. Ijtihad has always been an important tool and source for Muslims to find Islamic rulings on various current and newcoming issues which they found no direct answers both in the Quran and the Prophet Muhammad’s traditions. As a largest community in Malaysia, Muslim society which form 60% of 30 million of total population experiences a lot of new issues in their current life, from issues of personal religious duties to various mundane …

The Trade Description Act 2011: Regulating 'Halal' In Malaysia, Z. Zakaria, S.Z. Ismail

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Malaysia took its cue from the United Kingdom by passing the Trade Description Act in 1972. This act was to prevent manufacturers, retailers and service providers from manipulating and confusing consumers with false trade description and misleading conduct in the supply of goods and services. After 39 years in existence, it has now been repealed and replaced with the new Trade Descriptions Act of 2011. Enforced since 01 November 2011, salient changes have been made whilst maintaining its original objectives. One of the most significant features of the new Act is the creation of the Trade Description (Definition of Halal) …

Real-Time 3d Person Tracking And Dense Stereo Maps Using Gpu Acceleration, Kendall Merriman Jun 2014

Real-Time 3d Person Tracking And Dense Stereo Maps Using Gpu Acceleration, Kendall Merriman

Master's Theses

Interfacing with a computer, especially when interacting with a virtual three di- mensional (3D) scene, found in video games for example, can be frustrating when using only a mouse and keyboard. Recent work has been focused on alternative modes of interactions, including 3D tracking of the human body. One of the essential steps in this process is acquiring depth information of the scene. Stereo vision is the process of using two separate images of the same scene, taken from slightly different positions, to get a three dimensional view of the scene. One of the largest issues with dense stereo map …

The Role Of Sirtuin Inhibitors On The Proteomic Responses Of The Mussels Mytilus Galloprovincialis And Mytilus Trossulus To Menadione Induced Oxidative Stress, Hayley C. Chilton Jun 2014

The Role Of Sirtuin Inhibitors On The Proteomic Responses Of The Mussels Mytilus Galloprovincialis And Mytilus Trossulus To Menadione Induced Oxidative Stress, Hayley C. Chilton

Master's Theses

Global climate change imposes physiological constraints on marine ecosystems that can alter the distribution of intertidal organisms. In one such instance, the native cold-adapted mussel Mytilus trossulus is being replaced along its southern range by the invasive warm-adapted Mytilus galloprovincialis. These blue mussels occur throughout rocky intertidal zones where they are subjected to greatly varying environmental conditions known to induce oxidative stress. We hypothesize that while under acute stress, related Mytilus congeners undergo a shift in redox potential from NADH-fueled respiratory pathways to pathways producing NADPH as a way to decrease the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and …

Semi-Wonderful Town, Semi-Wonderful State: Bill Nelson's New York, Edward A. Purcell Jr.

Chicago-Kent Law Review

This article examines Bill Nelson’s two major books on the history of New York law and politics, The Legalist Reformation (2001) and Fighting for the City (2008). The former deals with developments in New York State from the late nineteenth to the late twentieth century; the latter with New York City starting somewhat earlier but concentrating on the same later period. The Legalist Reformation argues that the election of Alfred E. Smith as Governor of New York in 1922 began a transformation of the state’s legal and political culture that brought new and more egalitarian social policies to the state …

Ept7 Influences Estrogen Action In The Pituitary Gland And Body Weight Of Rats, Scott G. Kurz, Kirsten L. Mcfee, Nyssa Becker Samanas, Maureen Peters Hickman, Quincy A. Eckert, Tiffany L. Walker, Andrea S. Cupp, James D. Shull

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Estrogens control many aspects of pituitary gland biology, including regulation of lactotroph homeostasis and synthesis and secretion of prolactin. In rat models, these actions are strain specific and heritable, and multiple quantitative trait loci (QTL) have been mapped that impact the responsiveness of the lactotroph to estrogens. One such QTL, Ept7, was mapped to RNO7 in female progeny generated in an intercross between BN rats, in which the lactotroph population is insensitive to estrogens, and ACI rats, which develop lactotroph hyperplasia/adenoma and associated hyperprolactinemia in response to estrogen treatment. The primary objective of this study was to confirm the …

The Claim-Centered Approach To Arising-Under Jurisdiction: A Brief Rejoinder To Professor Mulligan, Simona Grossi Jun 2014

The Claim-Centered Approach To Arising-Under Jurisdiction: A Brief Rejoinder To Professor Mulligan, Simona Grossi

Washington Law Review

My claim-centered approach to arising-under jurisdiction fully embraces the three subcategories of jurisdiction that Professor Mulligan identifies. My essential point is that the bifurcation (or trifurcation as Professor Mulligan suggests) into separate doctrines has led to a mechanical jurisprudence that is sometimes inconsistent with the fundamental principles that ought to animate § 1331 jurisdictional analysis. In my view, Gully v. First National Bank illuminates those fundamental principles by focusing on the role of the federal issue in the case before the court. That does not mean that Gully provides an easy answer for all applications of arising-under jurisdiction; it does …

Encountering Metronormativity: Geographies Of Queer Visibility In Central New York, Sean H. Wang

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

This article uses metronormativity to discuss queer visibility and political organizing in central New York. It critically reviews the geography of sexuality literature and – through a vignette – illustrates how metronormative politics impacts service providers. It ends by suggesting that the Marxist concept of ordinary may offer an alternative to metronormativity.
