Chronic Illness And Disasters: Development Of A Theoretical Framework, Jacqueline K. Owens, Donna S. Martsolf
Chronic Illness And Disasters: Development Of A Theoretical Framework, Jacqueline K. Owens, Donna S. Martsolf
The Qualitative Report
In a disaster, individuals with chronic illnesses risk poor outcomes. This grounded theory study sought to develop a framework that describes how these individuals manage health-related challenges during disasters. The five phases of disaster response (non-disaster, pre-disaster, impact, emergency, reconstruction) and the individual, local, state, and federal level model served as conceptual frameworks. Using purposive sampling, 30 individuals with chronic illnesses and 10 lay caregivers were recruited from Florida and New Orleans. Data sources included interviews and media data. Constant comparative analysis techniques were used to build the theoretical framework. Transcript analysis suggested that participants used four unique ways to …

This study examined the effectiveness of Headsprout Early Reading to augment fluency abilities for second grade students in an urban public school system. Headsprout, a Computer-Assisted Instruction program (CAI), provided internet-based reading instruction based on the National Reading Panel's recommendations. All second grade students were assessed to determine who would use the program. Second grade students who participated in Headsprout sessions were compared with second grade students who did not use Headsprout. All participants were assessed again at the end of the study.Analysis of the students' gains was conducted using a Repeated Measures Analysis of Variance (R-ANOVA). It revealed that …

Practicing “Enlightened Capitalism”: “Fil–Am” Heroes, Ngo Activism, And The Reconstitution Of Class Difference In The Philippines, Faith R. Kares
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
Drawing on original ethnographic research, thisarticle focuses on the ways in which the Philippines-based nongovernmental organization (NGO) Gawad Kalinga (GK) encourages diasporic Filipino volunteerism by reworking the nationalist discourse of heroism and deploying idioms of love and care. It examines volunteer receptions to GK’s development approach and recruitment strategies. In so doing, thisarticle analyzes not only the diaspora’s role in GK’s housing construction efforts and poverty alleviation projects, but also interrogates the implications of the underclass ideology buttressing and the neoliberal logic framing the organization’s work with the poor.KEYWORDS: Filipino diaspora • development • nongovernmental organizations • nationalism • poverty
Typhoon Ondoy And The Translation Of Disaster Expertise In Barangay Banaba, Marikina Valley, Loh Kah Seng
Typhoon Ondoy And The Translation Of Disaster Expertise In Barangay Banaba, Marikina Valley, Loh Kah Seng
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
Thisarticle investigates community-based disaster responses among informal settlers in a barangay located just outside Metro Manila in the aftermath of Typhoon Ondoy (international code name Ketsana) in 2009. People have embraced some technical measures, such as forcible evacuation, but others have continued customary practices, such as seeking refuge on rooftops where they could get trapped during floods. An important factor in this process has been the credible work of a local people’s organization, which has mediated technical expertise from outside the community. Adaptation of disaster expertise is an ongoing and unpredictable process, shaped by people’s lived experiences and the wider …
The Effects Of Organizational Justice And Exercise On The Relationship Between Job Stressors And Employee Health, Ana Cristina B. Costa
The Effects Of Organizational Justice And Exercise On The Relationship Between Job Stressors And Employee Health, Ana Cristina B. Costa
Dissertations and Theses
Recent decades have seen an explosion of research centered on understanding the influential impact that job stressors have on employees' subjective well-being, and now more recently, on objective assessments of physical health. Utilizing baseline data from a larger study funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), I conducted a field study on blue-collar employees from two organizations in the construction industry, with the goal of exploring the impact of job stressors on job satisfaction (subjective well-being) and body mass index (objective health), as well as the influence of organizational justice as a moderator and exercise as …

A Network Stability Monitoring Mechanism Of Cluster-Oriented Wireless Sensor Network , Kuo-Qin Yan, Shu-Ching Wang, Yu-Ping Tung
Communications of the IIMA
In wireless sensor network (WSN), every sensor node could active dynamically. Therefore, those sensor nodes will affect the stability of network topology because of clustering and de-clustering, and continuously make reconfiguration for the clusters of wireless sensor network, all that will influence the overall function of network. It is an important issue that how to elect a cluster manager (CM) to keep the stability of network topology. In addition, large amount of events maybe flood suddenly in a local area. Such the case might raise the overload of CM, even lead CM to fail or crash and the WSN topology …

“You Are Turning Into A Hive Mind”: Storytelling, Ecological Thought, And The Problem Of Form In Generation A, Jenny Kerber
“You Are Turning Into A Hive Mind”: Storytelling, Ecological Thought, And The Problem Of Form In Generation A, Jenny Kerber
English and Film Studies Faculty Publications
This article discusses the relationship between literary form and contemporary ecological anxiety in Douglas Coupland’s novel Generation A. Coupland’s speculative fiction envisions a possible future in the wake of Colony Collapse Disorder, but the more generalized eco-anxiety the novel explores is applicable to a number of contemporary environmental issues ranging from climate change to ocean acidification. I argue that Coupland’s novel invites readers to consider the problem of representing ecological problems characterized by global scale, temporal uncertainty, and multiple origins. I then explore how Coupland responds to these challenges by stretching form in two directions. First, he juxtaposes and …

Experiences Of Hispanic Students Enrolled In Secondary Agricultural Education Programs, Karina Salomon, José Vargas
Agricultural Education and Communication
Nearly 52% of the 72,445 [state] students enrolled in agricultural education are Hispanic. However, when many of these programs participate in leadership development activities beyond the local level, the diversity of their participants fails to mirror that of their enrollment. Many teachers are at a loss as to what they can do to cultivate the talent of these students.
In this phenomenological study, a focus group interview was conducted at a [state] high school agriculture program with the reputation for strong Hispanic student engagement. Nine Hispanic agriculture students were invited to participate. The purpose of the study was to interpret …

I first walked through the doors of Morrill Hall on the main or City Campus of the University of Nebraska on a day late in August of 1962 and thought that I had entered paleontology heaven. Morrill Hall then housed the University of Nebraska State Museum (UNSM). most of the Geology Department, and some other parts of university units. I was a new graduate student hoping to pursue research in invertebrate paleontology in the Department of Geology and was on my way to see the department chairman for the first time. When I entered the building I walked through a …

Bdla, Dipa And Induced Dispersion Contribute To Acute Virulence And Chronic Persistence Of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Yi Li, Olga E. Petrova, Shengchang Su, Gee Lau, Warunya Panmanee, Renuka Na, Daniel J. Hassett, David G. Davies, Karin Sauer
Biological Sciences Faculty Scholarship
The human pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa is capable of causing both acute and chronic infections. Differences in virulence are attributable to the mode of growth: bacteria growing planktonically cause acute infections, while bacteria growing in matrix-enclosed aggregates known as biofilms are associated with chronic, persistent infections. While the contribution of the planktonic and biofilm modes of growth to virulence is now widely accepted, little is known about the role of dispersion in virulence, the active process by which biofilm bacteria switch back to the planktonic mode of growth. Here, we demonstrate that P. aeruginosa dispersed cells display a virulence phenotype distinct …

Patch-Burn Grazing Effects On Cattle Performance: Research Conducted In A Working Landscape, Stephen L. Winter, Samuel D. Fuhlendorf, Mark Goes
Patch-Burn Grazing Effects On Cattle Performance: Research Conducted In A Working Landscape, Stephen L. Winter, Samuel D. Fuhlendorf, Mark Goes
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
• Patch-burn grazing is a range management strategy that might be able to simultaneously optimize livestock production objectives and wildlife habitat objectives.
• We compared patch-burn grazing to a traditional range management strategy in multiple pastures, representing a variety of land ownership and management histories, dispersed across a relatively large geographic area. Our results likely represent what land managers could expect if they adopted patch-burn grazing in similar situations.
• We found that cattle performance in pastures managed with patch-burn grazing did not differ from that found in pastures managed with a traditional range management strategy. This suggests that land …

Empowering citizens to comprehend complex environmental issues affecting their daily lives is essential to sustaining a healthy and informed public. The work of many environmental nongovernmental organizations (ENGOs) and institutions of higher education (IHEs) center around helping their stakeholders become informed of, and in turn, better understand complex environmental problems. However, providing individual stakeholders with knowledge about environmental issues that is easily accessible and understandable represents a recurring challenge in today's society. As a result, a gap continues to exist between that which is known about environmental problems and the public's awareness and understanding of those issues. Arsenic contamination of …
