Effects Of Lead And Cadmium On Brain Endothelial Cell Survival, Monolayer Permeability, And Crucial Oxidative Stress Markers In An In Vitro Model Of The Blood-Brain Barrier, Shakila Tobwala, Hsiu Jen Wang, Joshua Warren Carey, William A. Banks, Nuran Ercal

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Oxidative stress, which is the loss of balance between antioxidant defense and oxidant production in the cells, is implicated in the molecular mechanism of heavy metal-induced neurotoxicity. Given the key role of lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) in inducing oxidative stress, we investigated their role in disrupting the integrity and function of immortalized human brain microvascular endothelial cells (hCMEC/D3). To study this, hCMEC/D3 cells were exposed to control media or to media containing different concentrations of Pb or Cd. Those exposed to Pb or Cd showed significantly higher oxidative stress than the untreated group, as indicated by cell viability, reactive …

Wonders Of Wisconsin: A Study On Insect Macrophotography, Brenna L. Decker Jun 2014

Wonders Of Wisconsin: A Study On Insect Macrophotography, Brenna L. Decker

Lawrence University Honors Projects

This past year I have been honing my skills as an entomologist and as a photographer. My solo exhibition “Wonders of Wisconsin: A Study on Insect Macrophotography” not only presents my personal progress, but also represents an overarching theme of a liberal arts education: connectivity. Everything we see or learn on campus and throughout life is connected. This audience-engaging exhibition has provided a visual for the connections between the fields of science and studio art, the art movements of New Objectivity and Relational Aesthetics, and between human and insect life.

The final exhibition opening on May 1st at 5:30pm …

On Non-Cooperative Multiple-Target Tracking With Wireless Sensor Networks, Ye Zhu, A. Vikram, Huirong Fu, Yong Guan Jun 2014

On Non-Cooperative Multiple-Target Tracking With Wireless Sensor Networks, Ye Zhu, A. Vikram, Huirong Fu, Yong Guan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper, we propose an approach to track multiple non-cooperative targets with wireless sensor networks. Most existing tracking algorithms can not be directly applied to non-cooperative target tracking because they assume the access to signals from individual targets for tracking by assuming that: 1) there is only one target in a field; 2) signals from different co-operative targets can be differentiated; or 3) interference caused by signals from other targets is negligible because of attenuation. We propose a general approach for tracking non-cooperative targets. The tracking algorithm first separates the aggregate signals from multiple indistinguishable targets via the blind …

Characterization Of Methylene Diphenyl Diisocyanate Protein Conjugates, Morgen Mhike Jun 2014

Characterization Of Methylene Diphenyl Diisocyanate Protein Conjugates, Morgen Mhike

Dissertations and Theses

Diisocyanates (dNCO) such as methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) are used primarily as cross-linking agents in the production of polyurethane products such as paints, elastomers, coatings and adhesives, and are the most frequently reported cause of chemically induced immunologic sensitization and occupational asthma (OA). Immune mediated hypersensitivity reactions to dNCOs include allergic rhinitis, asthma, hypersensitivity pneumonitis and allergic contact dermatitis.

There is currently no simple diagnosis for the identification of dNCO asthma due to the variability of symptoms and uncertainty regarding the underlying mechanisms. Immunological sensitization due to dNCO exposure is traditionally thought to require initial conjugation of the dNCO to …

From Digits To Diagrams: Using Infographics To Inform Database Retention And Cancellation Decisions, Calida A. Barboza

Charleston Library Conference

This paper describes a poster presentation about how Ithaca College librarians used an infographic displaying the relationships among databases to make retention and cancellation decisions for the 2013–2014 fiscal year. The diagram, which was created to help selectors more easily understand how canceling one database would affect subscriptions to other databases, also shows the impact of the resources’ interconnectedness on cost. A modified sample of the illustration is reproduced in this report. Design considerations and the tools used to create the image will also be discussed.

Publarians And Lubishers: Role Bending In The New Scholarly Communications Ecosystem, Nancy Maron, Sylvia Miller, Charles Watkinson, Anne Kenney

Charleston Library Conference

It has been said that the work of publishers and librarians will merge over time until we are all publarians and lublishers. Do we still envision a shared future? As new publishing programs within libraries and experimental publisher-library collaborations continue to challenge us to move outside of our comfort zones, are we learning from each other? What are some practical, down-to-earth ways that we can take advantage of each other’s expertise? How can we produce and market scholarly content in a more integrated way to meet the needs of scholars in a digital-information ecosystem, without duplicating effort on separate tracks? …

Support When It Counts: Library Roles In Public Access To Federally Funded Research, Kristine M. Alpi, William M. Cross, Hilary M. Davis

Charleston Library Conference

In November 2012, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced it would begin enforcing its April 2008 mandate of public access to NIH-funded research by delaying processing of investigators’ grants reporting noncompliant publications. In response, the North Carolina State University (NCSU) Libraries offered to assist the University’s sponsored research administration in supporting NCSU researchers who had publications stemming from NIH funding and had not achieved compliance. Since the 2008 NIH mandate, over 1,000 articles based on NIH-funding have been published by NCSU across research areas including veterinary medicine, life sciences, physical sciences, social sciences, engineering, textiles, design, math, and statistics. …

It Is Not Just A Document: Using Government Data In Teaching And Research, Catherine Johnson, Marianne Ryan, Melissa Oakes Jun 2014

It Is Not Just A Document: Using Government Data In Teaching And Research, Catherine Johnson, Marianne Ryan, Melissa Oakes

Charleston Library Conference

Government documents have long been perceived as valuable resources containing unique information content. But documents are also sources of deep, rich numeric and textual data that are available nowhere else. Identifying the specific sources that contain these data, tapping it, and manipulating it can be confusing, at best. But once discovered, the unique data within government publications can contribute to research and teaching in a wide variety of academic disciplines.

By working together, librarians and vendors can suggest ways to derive greater value from government information resources, explore new ways of thinking about text and data patterns, and assess some …

Is The Library Ready For An Emerging Field? The Case Of Veterans Studies, Marc D. Brodsky, Bruce E. Pencek Jun 2014

Is The Library Ready For An Emerging Field? The Case Of Veterans Studies, Marc D. Brodsky, Bruce E. Pencek

Charleston Library Conference

How can libraries and archives prepare for emerging scholarly fields that have not yet emerged? How do we know when such a “discipline” is emerging, and how might we support it?

An archivist at Special Collections and the history/social science librarian at the Virginia Tech Libraries saw signs of research interest about veterans on their campus and elsewhere. With an interest in supporting what might be considered an emerging field, both were aware of the risks of investing in materials that do not attract users. This presentation will examine their process of evaluating those risks while assessing evidence of a …

Data To Decisions: Shared Print Retention In Maine, Becky Albitz, Deb Rollins Jun 2014

Data To Decisions: Shared Print Retention In Maine, Becky Albitz, Deb Rollins

Charleston Library Conference

Shared print initiatives are gaining visibility across the country. While the majority of programs up to this point, such as the West Storage Trust and the CIC, have focused on journals, a growing number of these cooperative ventures are exploring regional retention of both monographs and journals. The Maine Shared Collection Strategy is one such initiative.

All of a sudden, libraries seem have too much print in their stacks, much of it unused, if statistics are to be believed. The usual solution is judicious de-accessioning, aka weeding, based on various factors such as circulation, age, duplication across formats, and collection …

Collections Are For Collisions: Let Us Design It Into The Experience, Steven J. Bell Jun 2014

Collections Are For Collisions: Let Us Design It Into The Experience, Steven J. Bell

Charleston Library Conference

We talk about collections all the time: how to build and share them; how to provide access; how to enlist the community in selecting; how to prove the value of collections; how to use collection statistics. We even talk about collections that are hidden and how to get rid of the ones we no longer need. What we infrequently discuss is how to get community members connected with the collections. A hot topic of conversation, particularly in the design of work environments, is how to create collisions that lead to good outcomes. In this plenary session, Steven Bell, Associate University …

Phonemic Restoration In Developmental Dyslexia, Stephanie N. Del Tufo, Emily B. Myers Jun 2014

Phonemic Restoration In Developmental Dyslexia, Stephanie N. Del Tufo, Emily B. Myers

Open Access Author Fund Awardees' Articles

The comprehension of fluent speech in one's native language requires that listeners integrate the detailed acoustic-phonetic information available in the sound signal with linguistic knowledge. This interplay is especially apparent in the phoneme restoration effect, a phenomenon in which a missing phoneme is “restored” via the influence of top-down information from the lexicon and through bottom-up acoustic processing. Developmental dyslexia is a disorder characterized by an inability to read at the level of one's peers without any clear failure due to environmental influences. In the current study we utilized the phonemic restoration illusion paradigm to examine individual differences in phonemic …

Designing A Biomimetic Primary Cell-Based 3d Culture System For Neurotoxicity Screening, Teresa Cauvel, Jessca Kosit, Nicolo Mendoza Jun 2014

Designing A Biomimetic Primary Cell-Based 3d Culture System For Neurotoxicity Screening, Teresa Cauvel, Jessca Kosit, Nicolo Mendoza

Bioengineering Senior Theses

Culturing neurons in vitro is a challenging task because they are a highly specialized cell type that reside in a complex and unique environment in the body. The aim of the research presented in the following thesis was to design a biomimetic, three-dimensional scaffold capable of (1) promoting primary neuron maturation and axonal outgrowth and (2) serving as a system for toxicology screening. In the system presented here, neurons were cultured in three-dimensional hydrogels, simulating the physiological environment that these cells experience within the body. In doing so, a biologically relevant response was elicited upon their exposure to acrylamide, a …

Coral-Fish Dynamics And Interactions: A Case Study Of Grand Cayman, Eileen Shea Davis Jun 2014

Coral-Fish Dynamics And Interactions: A Case Study Of Grand Cayman, Eileen Shea Davis

Lawrence University Honors Projects

To better understand the ecological interactions of coral reefs, it is important to understand the mechanisms that control the distribution and abundance of reef-building corals as well as the mechanisms that control the diversity and abundance of the fish community that inhabits these reef habitats. The purpose of this study was to identify specific coral-fish interactions among the reefs of Grand Cayman in order to gain insight into the biological effects of fish on the assemblage of hard corals. Using data collected by the Lawrence University Marine Program (LUMP), a number of exploratory statistical analyses were run in order to …

Evidence Of Climate-Induced Range Contractions In Bull Trout Salvelinus Confluentus In A Rocky Mountain Watersehd, U.S.A., Lisa A. Eby, Olga E. Helmy, Lisa M. Holsinger, Michael K. Young

Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications

Many freshwater fish species are considered vulnerable to stream temperature warming associated with climate change because they are ectothermic, yet there are surprisingly few studies documenting changes in distributions. Streams and rivers in the U.S. Rocky Mountains have been warming for several decades. At the same time these systems have been experiencing an increase in the severity and frequency of wildfires, which often results in habitat changes including increased water temperatures. We resampled 74 sites across a Rocky Mountain watershed 17 to 20 years after initial samples to determine whether there were trends in bull trout occurrence associated with temperature, …

Russia’S Contract Arbitrage, Anna Gelpern Jun 2014

Russia’S Contract Arbitrage, Anna Gelpern

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Ukraine is poised to restructure its debt, but Russia may hold the best cards in the negotiation. Russia bought $3 billion in Ukrainian Eurobonds in late 2013 to prop up a political ally, since-deposed. As Russian President Vladimir Putin himself has pointed out, these bonds have unique terms that let Russia call for early repayment, putting it ahead of Ukraine’s private creditors. Meanwhile, Russia and its proxies hold enough bonds to block a restructuring vote or hold out, sticking more losses on other creditors. Russia has refused to restructure the bonds in the Paris Club of government-to-government creditors, claiming that …

Dartmouth Scholarship

Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) emerged in 2012. Recently, the MERS-CoV receptor dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP4) was identified and the specific interaction of the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of MERS-CoV spike protein and DPP4 was determined by crystallography. Animal studies identified rhesus macaques but not hamsters, ferrets, or mice to be susceptible for MERS-CoV. Here, we investigated the role of DPP4 in this observed species tropism. Cell lines of human and nonhuman primate origin were permissive of MERS-CoV, whereas hamster, ferret, or mouse cell lines were not, despite the presence of DPP4. Expression of human DPP4 in nonsusceptible BHK and …
