Making Room For Cooperative Innovation, Liza S. Vertinsky Jul 2014

Making Room For Cooperative Innovation, Liza S. Vertinsky

Florida State University Law Review

Patent law, created in response to a constitutional mandate to encourage innovation, may be discouraging important forms of cooperative innovation. Advances in technology have enabled new ways of pooling knowledge and computational capabilities, facilitating cooperation among many participants with complementary skills and motivations to collectively solve complex problems. But emerging models of cooperative innovation increasingly run into patent roadblocks.

Why might patent law sometimes thwart instead of support socially beneficial cooperative innovation? The problem lies in the tensions between the market-based incentives that patent law creates and the mechanisms that support emerging models of cooperative innovation. The complexity and cost …

Capital In The Twenty-First Century: A Tale Without Morality, Bruce D. Baker Jul 2014

Capital In The Twenty-First Century: A Tale Without Morality, Bruce D. Baker

SPU Works

Thomas Piketty has given economists a lot to argue about, but their arguments miss the point of the book’s success. “Capital in the Twenty-First Century” is not a bestseller based on its economic merits. It’s a bestseller because it speaks to a deep moral anxiety. Confidence in capitalism has been shaken. The crisis of 2008 exposed weaknesses in the financialization of our economy. Piketty makes a valiant contribution to economic theory and history, but his empiricism succumbs ultimately to the same flaw John Paul II diagnosed in Marxism—it leads to an incoherent statement of moral order.

Eyes In The Sky: Linking Satellite Oceanography And Biotelemetry To Explore Habitat Selection By Basking Sharks, Tobey H. Curtis, Stephan I. Zeeman, Erin L. Summers, Steven X. Cadrin, Gregory B. Skomal Jul 2014

Eyes In The Sky: Linking Satellite Oceanography And Biotelemetry To Explore Habitat Selection By Basking Sharks, Tobey H. Curtis, Stephan I. Zeeman, Erin L. Summers, Steven X. Cadrin, Gregory B. Skomal

Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: Satellite-based oceanographic data products are a valuable source of information on potential resource availability for marine species. Satellite oceanography data may be particularly useful in biotelemetry studies on marine species that feed at low trophic levels, such as zooplanktivorous whales, sharks, and rays. The basking shark, Cetorhinus maximus, is a well-documented zooplanktivore in the western North Atlantic, yet little is known of its movements and spatial ecology in this region. A combination of satellite tag technologies were used to describe basking shark movements with respect to concurrent satellite-observed oceanographic conditions in order to test for selection of these …

Epidemiology Of Coccidioidomycosis In Missouri, Ravi Kumar Aggu Sher Jul 2014

Epidemiology Of Coccidioidomycosis In Missouri, Ravi Kumar Aggu Sher

Open Access Theses

Introduction. Incidence of Coccidioidomycosis has been increasing nationally, from 2,271 cases in 1998 to 17,802 cases in 2012. Missouri is not endemic to Coccidioidomycosis but the incidence has been increasing since becoming reportable in 2003. To describe epidemiology of Coccidioidomycosis in Missouri we conducted a retrospective review of surveillance data at Missouri Department of Health & Senior Services (DHSS) for the years, 2004-2013.

Methods. Data was obtained from Missouri Health Surveillance Information System (WebSurv), the statewide reporting system for notifiable diseases. All cases that were "Confirmed" were included in the study.

Results. There were a total of 93 confirmed cases …

Evolution Of Food Quality Demand In The Food Service Industry In China: The Case Of Duck, Rachel Alison Carnegie

Open Access Theses

Booming economic growth and rising consumer incomes have impacted food preferences and purchasing behavior in China. At the same time, several internationally publicized food safety incidents, particularly in the animal husbandry sector, have heightened awareness of and concern for food safety and quality in meat and dairy. Rising quality demand and safety concerns have been studied at length in the food retail sector, but also appear to be important in the food service industry. This research uses data from a survey of duck restaurant managers and consumers in Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, and Guangzhou to determine preferences and willingness to pay …

Blood-Based Biomarkers For Traumatic Brain Injury: Evaluation Of Research Approaches, Available Methods And Potential Utility From The Clinician And Clinical Laboratory Perspectives, Frederick G. Strathmann, Stefanie Podlog (Nee Schulte), Kyle Goerl, David J. Petron

Athletic Training Collection

Blood-based biomarkers for traumatic brain injury (TBI) have been investigated and proposed for decades, yet the current clinical assessment of TBI is largely based on clinical symptoms that can vary widely amongst patients, and have significant overlap with unrelated disease states. A careful review of current treatment guidelines for TBI further highlights the potential utility of a blood-based TBI biomarker panel in augmenting clinical decision making. Numerous expert reviews on blood-based TBI biomarkers have been published but a close look at the methods used and the astonishing paucity of validation and quality control data has not been undertaken from the …

An Evaluation Of Sexually Aggressive Behavior In Serial-Sexual Homicide, Lauren Aunkst Jul 2014

An Evaluation Of Sexually Aggressive Behavior In Serial-Sexual Homicide, Lauren Aunkst

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Serial killers are a cultural phenomenon. Their grisly crimes have marred magazines, news, books and even films. While the social scientific community is slowly coming to understand these individuals, much remains unknown about them. A common theme in the majority of serial killings is a very strong sexual component. This study analyzed data to develop a scale in which to measure the amount of sexual aggression used by serial killers in three different populations. These populations included male serial killers, male/male serial killer dyads and male/female serial killer dyads. Due to time constraints this study was performed as an unobtrusive …

Modelling And Design Of A Tridimensional Compliant Leg For Bioloid Quadruped, Mafalda Couto, Cristina P. Santos, Jose Machado

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In the growing field of rehabilitation robotics, the modelling of a real robot is a complex and passionate challenge. On the crossing point of mechanics, physics and computer-science, the development of a complete 3D model involves the knowledge of the different physic properties, for an accurate simulation. In this paper, it is proposed the design of an efficient three-dimensional model of the quadruped Bioloid robot setting segmented pantographic legs, in order to actively retract the quadruped legs during locomotion and minimizing large forces due to shocks, such that the robot is able to safely and dynamically interact with the user …

Remeshing Visual Hull Approximation By Displaced Butterfly Subdivision Surfaces, Jung Lee, Chang-Hun Kim, Sun-Jeong Kim Jul 2014

Remeshing Visual Hull Approximation By Displaced Butterfly Subdivision Surfaces, Jung Lee, Chang-Hun Kim, Sun-Jeong Kim

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

This paper proposes a new procedure for generating a displaced butterfly subdivision surface from multiple images. First, point geometry of the target object is recovered by combining LDC(Layered Depth Cube) surfel sampling scheme with the concept of visual hull based on the input images. Then the subdivision surface is generated approximating to the recovered point cloud. We use a variant displaced subdivision scheme, where scalar displacement, in the direction of a local normal, is computed via the MLS(Moving Least Squares) approximation. The resulting subdivision surface is a mesh with subdivision connectivity providing a high-quality and efficient approximation to the given …

The Fire-Oak Literature Of Eastern North America: Synthesis And Guidelines, Patrick D. Brose, Daniel C. Dey, Thomas A. Waldrop Jul 2014

The Fire-Oak Literature Of Eastern North America: Synthesis And Guidelines, Patrick D. Brose, Daniel C. Dey, Thomas A. Waldrop

Joint Fire Science Program Synthesis Reports

Guidelines for using prescribed fire to regenerate and restore upland oak forests, woodlands, and savannas in eastern North America were developed by synthesizing the results of more than 100 scientific publications. The first four chapters provide background information on the values of oak ecosystems, eastern fire history, oak’s adaptations to fire, and the findings of fire-oak research conducted over the past 50 years. The final chapter synthesizes that background information into guidelines that explain how to use prescribed fire to facilitate oak seedling establishment, release oak reproduction from competing mesophytic hardwoods, and rehabilitate open oak woodlands, oak savannas, and scrub …

Envisioning The Farms Of The Future: In Pursuit Of Sustainable Agriculture In The Rio Grande Valley, Matthew Draper Jul 2014

Envisioning The Farms Of The Future: In Pursuit Of Sustainable Agriculture In The Rio Grande Valley, Matthew Draper

Latin American Studies ETDs

This thesis attempts to define the parameters that characterize sustainable agriculture on the level of an individual farm in the context of the central Rio Grande valley. Using historical sources about New Mexican agriculture, contemporary scientific literature and interviews with practicing farmers in the region, it develops a vision for the shape that farms must take in order to sustain agriculture in the region indefinitely. In doing so, particular attention is paid to how farms can be successful in the present moment and prepare for a future defined by resource scarcity and climate change. It begins with a brief history …

“A Little History Here, A Little Hollywood There”: (Counter-) Identifying With The Spanish Fantasy In Carlos Morton’S Rancho Hollywood And Theresa Chavez’S L.A. Real, Courtney Mohler Jul 2014

“A Little History Here, A Little Hollywood There”: (Counter-) Identifying With The Spanish Fantasy In Carlos Morton’S Rancho Hollywood And Theresa Chavez’S L.A. Real, Courtney Mohler

Scholarship and Professional Work – Arts

Often considered the final conquest and ultimate summation of Manifest Destiny, California holds a unique place in the American imaginary. While the popular mythology of the Spanish fantasy has served to obscure the use of violence and racialized oppression throughout the colonization of the American Southwest, traces of such struggle remain in memories of the colonized as they continue to occupy this contested space. This paper examines Carlos Morton’s ensemble-based political satire, Rancho Hollywood, and Theresa Chavez’s one-woman show, L.A. Real, to navigate the dynamic experience of contemporary Southern Californian racialized identity. These two pieces diverge stylistically but …
