Oswald Social Sciences Second Place: Do Pigeons Develop Mental Representations When Demonstrating Transitive Inference?, Carter Daniels Jul 2014

Oswald Social Sciences Second Place: Do Pigeons Develop Mental Representations When Demonstrating Transitive Inference?, Carter Daniels

Kaleidoscope

Transitive Inference (TI) is shown when after being told that A is better than B and B is better than C, one can answer the question, what is better A or C (in which A, B, and C are arbitrary stimuli). To avoid end-point effects (A is always better and C is never better) and provide a nonverbal task than can be used with young children and animals, the task has been expanded to 5 terms (i.e., A+B-, B+C-, C+D-, D+E- in which + means choice is reinforced and – means not reinforced). TI is found when subjects choose B …

Oswald Biological Sciences First Place: Development Of Three-Dimensional Lung Multicellular Spheroids In Air And Liquid Interface Culture For The Evaluation Of Anti-Cancer Therapeutics, Alexandra Tsoras Jul 2014

Oswald Biological Sciences First Place: Development Of Three-Dimensional Lung Multicellular Spheroids In Air And Liquid Interface Culture For The Evaluation Of Anti-Cancer Therapeutics, Alexandra Tsoras

Kaleidoscope

The implementation of in vitro results to in vivo applications has limitations due to conventional two-dimensional (2D) in vitro conditions lacking the ability to create a physiologically representative model. This study investigated a three-dimensional (3D) cell culture technique to model lung tumors in vitro. A 3D lung cancer model was created by applying collagen (a semi-non-adhesive material) to a transwell, which allowed for nutrient transfer through the collagen. Two lung cancer cells lines (H358, a bronchioalveolar carcinoma and A549, a lung adenocarcinoma) were seeded on top of the collagen. The non-adhesive collagen allowed the cells to preferentially attach to one …

Oswald Biological Sciences Second Place: Rna Degradation Is Elevated With Age-, But Not Disuse-Associated Skeletal Muscle Atrophy, Aman Shah Jul 2014

Oswald Biological Sciences Second Place: Rna Degradation Is Elevated With Age-, But Not Disuse-Associated Skeletal Muscle Atrophy, Aman Shah

Kaleidoscope

Aging and inactivity are both associated with decreased muscle size and protein content. The possible role of RNA degradation in the loss of protein has not yet been investigated. Therefore, we hypothesized that RNA degradation was elevated with muscle atrophy in aging and disuse. Brown Norway/Fisher344 male rats at 6 and 32 months were hindlimb suspended (HS) for 14 days to induce muscle atrophy or remained weight bearing (WB). Cytosolic extracts from gastrocnemius muscles were prepared for Western analysis of DCP-2 protein (marker of p-bodies) and RNA degradation assay. In vitro total RNA decay assay was performed using 30ug of …

Zero And The Rise Of Technological Lawmaking, Max Stul Oppenheimer Jul 2014

Zero And The Rise Of Technological Lawmaking, Max Stul Oppenheimer

Pace Law Review

This Article begins by identifying and drawing the outline of this previously unrecognized source of law: technology-made law. It then focuses on one paradigmatic case: changes in the meaning of “zero” and the closely related concept of a mathematical limit (for example a speed limit). It defines “zero” and demonstrates its explicit and implicit uses in law. It then posits that there are two ways to interpret a law involving a technological limit: a technology-static approach, in which comparisons are made using the technology available at the time the law was enacted, and a technology-dynamic approach, in which comparisons are …

Marta (Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transportation Authority) And Me: A Tale Of Regional Engagement, Tamra Ortgies-Young, Jonathan Harris

PRISM: A Journal of Regional Engagement

In a world of exponentially changing and disparate economic realities, college professors strive to create course projects that help inspire and transform student-learners into informed and active citizens who are prepared for the global workplace, and who have a growing awareness of how various issues impact their region. This paper scrutinizes the design, process, and outcomes of a student media project and refl ects upon the best practices for encouraging media literacy and student engagement with course projects in higher education. This article focuses on student media projects created by a global issues course at a two-year college. The project …

An Integrated Course Design Model For Beginning Faculty, Thomas F. Hawk, Amit J. Shah Jul 2014

An Integrated Course Design Model For Beginning Faculty, Thomas F. Hawk, Amit J. Shah

Organization Management Journal

It is rare that faculty members begin their first full-time teaching position with an integrated and consciously constructed practical model for course design, teaching, and learning. The purpose of this article is to offer new faculty members a starting point for constructing an integrated model of the course design and teaching and learning processes. The model begins with the instructor’s choice of course learning goals, objectives, and outcomes and progresses through the translation of those learning goals and objectives into articulated evaluation and feedback rubrics, the choice of specific learning activities and materials reflected in a learner-centered syllabus, the conduct …

Growing Up Beside You: A Relational Sociology Of Early Childhood, Nr Gabriel Jul 2014

Growing Up Beside You: A Relational Sociology Of Early Childhood, Nr Gabriel

Plymouth Institute of Education

This article will begin by outlining influential attempts by historians and sociologists to develop a more adequate theoretical understanding of past and contemporary childhoods, focusing on the major problems that stem from the pivotal role that ‘developmentalism’ plays in their arguments. I will argue that sociologists can overcome some of their deepest fears about the role of developmental psychology by developing a relational approach that integrates the biological and social aspects of children’s development. In the development of a relational sociology of early childhood we need to make important connections with closely related disciplines, but at the same time draw …

Story Generation Ability In Four Children With Language Impairment, Monica Leroy Chamberlain Jul 2014

Story Generation Ability In Four Children With Language Impairment, Monica Leroy Chamberlain

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis project focused on the complexity of story generations produced by four children with language impairment across treatment sessions. Specifically, the participants' utterances were analyzed to determine if the children produced simple story elements and/or more complex cause/effect story elements. The children's utterances were also analyzed to identify emotion words in order to consider the children's awareness of the emotions experienced by characters in the stories. All participants approached the story generation task by describing characters and actions based on pictures from the book. Two participants did not express any causal relationships and two participants expressed some awareness of …

Building Social Change Through Interactive Webcomics, Sarah Shelton Jul 2014

Building Social Change Through Interactive Webcomics, Sarah Shelton

Research Papers

Comic books are a popular form of creative storytelling. Through sequential juxtaposed panels, comics have the unique ability to interact with the reader through time and space. The context within comics is the constrained amount of panels a typical comic book page allows, and the space that exists between the panels encourages the reader to manipulate meaning. Through this unique process of interaction between the narrative and the reader, comics have proven to be a creative medium to promote meanings of social change. Throughout history, comics have utilized their entertaining guise to mask underlying themes of social injustices and political …

Investigating The One-On-One Master-Apprentice Relationship: A Case Study In Traditional Craft Apprenticeship, Isaac W. Calvert Jul 2014

Investigating The One-On-One Master-Apprentice Relationship: A Case Study In Traditional Craft Apprenticeship, Isaac W. Calvert

Theses and Dissertations

Governments around the world are calling for a revival of apprenticeship on a large scale, emphasizing the value of the one-on-one, human interaction between master and apprentice and the teaching involved in that interaction. Although a broader historical view of apprenticeship shares these ideas, certain prominent threads within recent educational research have done a great deal to deemphasize them. Some go so far as to overlook the master-apprentice relationship altogether, assert that masters simply do not exist, and claim that apprenticeship learning happens without any teaching at all. In response to these claims, the researcher took part in an autoethnographic …

Analysis And Application Of Passive Gait Rehabilitation Methods, Ismet Handzic Jul 2014

Analysis And Application Of Passive Gait Rehabilitation Methods, Ismet Handzic

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Human gait is elegant and efficient in propelling the body forward. While a healthy human gait is symmetric, any deviation from symmetry can cause inefficiencies to the entire body. Such asymmetries may present themselves in hemiplegic patients, prosthetic users, lower limb injuries, limb height and weight discrepancies, or abnormal overground foot rolling. In this dissertation, practical passive methods to alleviate such asymmetric walking dynamics are presented. The novel concepts presented in this manuscript can all be related and applied to passive gait rehabilitation, that is, the rehabilitation of a person's gait through methods that do not require external power. One …

Investigation Of Spatial Isotope Ratios In Soil And The Effects Of Fertilizer On Plant Isotope Ratios, Jamie Kim, H. Thomas Goodwin Ph.D. Jul 2014

Investigation Of Spatial Isotope Ratios In Soil And The Effects Of Fertilizer On Plant Isotope Ratios, Jamie Kim, H. Thomas Goodwin Ph.D.

Posters, Presentations, and Papers

A previous Honors study analyzed diet of thirteen-lined ground squirrels at the Andrews University Airpark by studying δ13C and δ15N isotope values of their fecal pellets (Chacko, 2013). Fecal samples collected within 25m of a cornfield had elevated isotope values.

High δ13C values indicate greater consumption of C4 plants, such as corn (Ehleringer et al., 1986); high δ15N values indicate increased consumption of animal matter (DeNiro and Epstein, 1981 ). However, the spatial pattern may be due to variation in the soil, reflecting long-term patterns in the vegetation.

Soil samples were taken throughout the airpark and analyzed for δ13C and …

Developmental Regulation Of Phase-I Drug Metabolizing Genes In Mouse Liver, Lai Peng Jul 2014

Developmental Regulation Of Phase-I Drug Metabolizing Genes In Mouse Liver, Lai Peng

Doctoral Dissertations

Liver is a critical organ for drug metabolism and is the primary site for the expression of Phase-I drug metabolizing enzymes, which mainly catalyze the oxidation, reduction, and hydrolysis of xenobiotics. However, in the fetus, the major function of liver is hematopoiesis. From infants to adults, dramatic changes occur in liver functions and the Phase-I gene expression, which can markedly affect the metabolism of drugs in newborns and children. Characterization of the expression profiles and regulatory mechanisms of liver development and Phase-I genes is needed for more rational drug therapy of pediatric patients. An animal model is indispensable for studying …

Syndrome Specific And Non-Syndrome Specific Predictors Of Developmental Change In Higher Functioning Children With Autism, Kim E. Ono Jul 2014

Syndrome Specific And Non-Syndrome Specific Predictors Of Developmental Change In Higher Functioning Children With Autism, Kim E. Ono

Open Access Dissertations

There is a wide range of variability in symptoms and comorbid behaviors among individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Variability is seen both between individuals at a given point in time and in patterns of change within individuals over time. The goals of the current study were to examine (1) initial levels and rates of change in social reciprocity and internalizing and externalizing behavior problems, and (2) the effects of initial temperament, verbal IQ, and symptom severity on mean initial levels and rates of change in social reciprocity and comorbid internalizing and externalizing behaviors. The sample consisted of higher functioning …

How To Eat To Live: Black Nationalism And The Post-1964 Culinary Turn, Jennifer Jensen Wallach Jul 2014

How To Eat To Live: Black Nationalism And The Post-1964 Culinary Turn, Jennifer Jensen Wallach

Study the South

Beginning in the late 1960s, an increasing number of black food reformers rejected, or at least complicated, what they regarded as standard American food practices. They asserted a separate black national identity and a competing value system. Culinary black nationalists did not conceive of food decisions as a series of trivial personal consumer choices but rather as an arena for communal activism. The construction of black nationalist foodways was both an evolutionary process and a dialectical one. Radical food reformers analyzed white-owned eating establishments and dominant American foodways in opposition to southern, regional cuisine and in contrast to a vegetarian-inclined …

Efficient Variable Step Size Approximations For Strong Solutions Of Stochastic Differential Equations With Additive Noise And Time Singularity, Harry Randolph Hughes, Pathiranage Lochana Siriwardena Jul 2014

Efficient Variable Step Size Approximations For Strong Solutions Of Stochastic Differential Equations With Additive Noise And Time Singularity, Harry Randolph Hughes, Pathiranage Lochana Siriwardena

Articles and Preprints

We consider stochastic differential equations with additive noise and conditions on the coefficients in those equations that allow a time singularity in the drift coefficient. Given a maximum step size, ℎ∗, we specify variable (adaptive) step sizes relative to ℎ∗ which decrease as the time node points approach the singularity. We use an Euler-type numerical scheme to produce an approximate solution and estimate the error in the approximation. When the solution is restricted to a fixed closed time interval excluding the singularity, we obtain a global pointwise error of order 𝑂(ℎ∗). An order of error …
