Transformation Or Revival: St. Louis Culture Before And After The Great Fire Of 1849, Daron Patrick Dierkes
Transformation Or Revival: St. Louis Culture Before And After The Great Fire Of 1849, Daron Patrick Dierkes
Theses
It is commonly accepted that Antebellum St. Louis was reborn in the wake of fire and disease. A boom in cultural activities during the 1850s has allowed the Great Fire of 1849 to serve as a historical landmark separating an older fur trading town from a new cosmopolitan city. This study examines that transformation hypothesis from a broader frame of reference and concludes that the Great Fire merely coincided with the end of a temporary lull in cultural activities that had begun much earlier in the 1830s. By following the ebb and flow of museums, panoramic paintings, and public lectures …
Behavioral Observation And Paternal Investment Of Eastern Kingbirds At Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, Christopher Michael Chutter
Behavioral Observation And Paternal Investment Of Eastern Kingbirds At Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, Christopher Michael Chutter
Dissertations and Theses
We have been studying the population of Eastern Kingbirds breeding in riparian habitats in Malheur National Wildlife Refuge (eastern Oregon) since 2002. These efforts have created an ideal research environment wherein most adults in the population have been color banded and DNA sampled and, as part of other research projects, nearly all broods since 2003 have been paternity tested. I decided to use behavioral video recordings of parental nest behavior undertaken between 2003 and 2010 for two unrelated projects. First, I tested the effectiveness of video sampling nesting behavior (see below and chapter 2). Second, I tested whether male kingbirds …
Development Of An Efficient Human Hepatocyte Culture Platform For Assessing Novel Therapeutic Efficacy Against Plasmodium Liver Parasites, Steven Patrick Maher
Development Of An Efficient Human Hepatocyte Culture Platform For Assessing Novel Therapeutic Efficacy Against Plasmodium Liver Parasites, Steven Patrick Maher
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Malaria is a critical and global public health problem, affecting over 200 million people every year, resulting in over 500,000 deaths. A vaccine is not currently available and only one drug, primaquine, is effective against the dormant stages of Plasmodium vivax. Preclinical assessment of novel therapeutic drugs and vaccines is hampered by the lack of an in vitro liver model for P. falciparum and P. vivax. To provide a stable human hepatocyte-based culture platform for parasite development, we engineered a microfluidic bilayer device capable of both simple and complex culture methods, including perfusion and co-culture, to better understand the requirements …

Small Triumphs: Alex Quigley '99 Finds Hope And Despair In The Mississippi Delta, Gerry Boyle
Colby Magazine
It was an hour into the school day and Alex Quigley '99 was standing in front of a room full of kindergarten students. The students were sitting on a carpet, each child assigned to a colored square. Quigley, motioning with a pointer tipped by a yellow star, looked like he was waving a magic wand.
"Who knows a word like bat?" he said. "Bat. Bah-tuh."
"Cat," a boy named Tony said.
"Good," said Quigley.
"Fat," said a little girl named Quintina.
"What letter makes the 'fuh, fuh' sound?" Quigley asked.
Quintina looked stumped.
"Fuh, fuh," Quigley said, his pointer at …

Just before Thanksgiving Day last November, Kent Wommack '77 got the classic good-news, bad-news, worse-news call. Wommack is head of The Nature Conservancy in Maine, and the caller was a timberland manager who had asked Wommack to back a client in acquiring prime acres of Maine forest on the upper St. John River, one of the most unspoiled waterways left in the United States. The good news was that the owner had agreed to sell the breathtaking chunk of land in the first place. The bad news was that the client was no longer interested in the deal. The worse …

Scientific Novels And ‘Lady Novelists’: Nature And Nurture In Austen’S Pride And Prejudice And Gaskell’S Wives And Daughters, Ashlie Flanigan
Scientific Novels And ‘Lady Novelists’: Nature And Nurture In Austen’S Pride And Prejudice And Gaskell’S Wives And Daughters, Ashlie Flanigan
USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)
This thesis explores the Darwinian concept of nature and nurture as found in 19th century British Fiction, specifically Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice and Elizabeth Gaskell’s Wives and Daughters. Austen identifies and explores the traits of her characters that are innate and learned, and considers the connection between those traits and indicators of class difference known as gentility. Gaskell uses the concept of natural and natured behaviors to explore the social construction of masculinity and femininity, and how those constructions evolve. Analyzing these novels for early scientific thought helps modern day readers understand how evolutionary science, primarily considered a masculine …

A Multi-Scale Approach To Study Predator-Prey Interactions And Habitat Use Of Pinfish, Lagodon Rhomboids, Dinorah Helena Chacin
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Biological processes like species interactions and patterns such as abundance and distribution observed in nature can vary depending on the scale at which the subject of interest is evaluated. Knowing that there is no single natural scale at which systems should be studied, in this thesis, I conducted a series of basic and applied ecological approaches in order to examine the phenomena that can occur at different scales of space, time, and ecological organization.
Species abundances can vary over large spatial and temporal scales. By studying the habitat use of an abundant species, which uses a wide range of habitats, …

Transpinal And Transcortical Stimulation Alter Corticospinal Excitability And Increase Spinal Output, Maria Knikou
Publications and Research
The objective of this study was to assess changes in corticospinal excitability and spinal output following noninvasive transpinal and transcortical stimulation in humans. The size of the motor evoked potentials (MEPs), induced by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and recorded from the right plantar flexor and extensor muscles, was assessed following transcutaneous electric stimulation of the spine (tsESS) over the thoracolumbar region at conditioning-test (C-T) intervals that ranged from negative 50 to positive 50 ms. The size of the transpinal evoked potentials (TEPs), induced by tsESS and recorded from the right and left plantar flexor and extensor muscles, was assessed following …

Background: Studies have indicated that altered maternal micronutrients and vitamins influence the development of newborns and altered nutrient exposure throughout the lifetime may have potential health effects and increased susceptibility to chronic diseases. In recent years, folic acid (FA) exposure has significantly increased as a result of mandatory FA fortification and supplementation during pregnancy. Since FA modulates DNA methylation and affects gene expression, we investigated whether the amount of FA ingested during gestation alters gene expression in the newborn cerebral hemisphere, and if the increased exposure to FA during gestation and throughout the lifetime alters behavior in C57BL/6J mice.

Interpolating Beach Profile Data Using Linear And Non-Linear Functions, Lance Calloway Croft
Interpolating Beach Profile Data Using Linear And Non-Linear Functions, Lance Calloway Croft
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
ABSTRACT
Beach and nearshore surveys are conducted in a variety of ways, the most commonly used being the level-and-transit method; because it is inexpensive, time conducive and highly accurate. Specifically, beach surveys are conducted to better understand cross-shore, long-shore sediment transport processes, as well as to quantify volume changes, which are used to evaluate beach performance. In this study, a section of the beach on Sand Key, FL was surveyed using rod-and-transit. In addition to the commonly used linear data analysis, a non-linear analysis was conducted using NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines).
Survey data was collected within a short time window …
