Genetic And Mechanistic Analysis Of Rat Mammary Cancer Susceptibility., Jennifer Sanders
Genetic And Mechanistic Analysis Of Rat Mammary Cancer Susceptibility., Jennifer Sanders
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Breast cancer is a complex disease, which is influenced by genetic, epigenetic and environmental components. Genetic susceptibility to breast cancer is made up of high, moderate and low penetrance alleles. High and moderate penetrance alleles are rare and constitute only a small percentage of the genetic susceptibility. Most variation in genetic susceptibility is controlled by low- penetrance, common polymorphisms. Comparative genetics uses model organisms to study human disease. Rat strains exhibit different susceptibility phenotypes to chemical induced carcinogenesis. The Wistar-Furth (WF) rat strain is susceptible to chemically induced mammary carcinogenesis, while the Wistar-Kyoto (WKy) and Copenhagen (COP) rat strains are …
Classification System Of The Physical Streambed Habitat., Abolfazl Shafaie
Classification System Of The Physical Streambed Habitat., Abolfazl Shafaie
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A streambed is the channel bottom of a stream, river, or creek; the physical confine of the normal water flow. It provides necessities for fish and microinvertebrate including shelter, food, and breeding spots. Therefore, it is an essential part of aquatic animal habitats and often seen as an index of stream health. There is no generally accepted method to quantify streambed physical components and depending upon state and organization a variety of methods are used. The procedure provided in the rapid bioassessment protocol (RBP) (Kaufmann et al., 1999; Sylte and Fischenich, 2002) is probably the most widely used method to …

Verification And Analysis Of Impact-Based Tornado Warnings In The Central Region Of The National Weather Service, Holly B. Obermeier
Verification And Analysis Of Impact-Based Tornado Warnings In The Central Region Of The National Weather Service, Holly B. Obermeier
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Tornado warnings are one of the most critical products issued by the National Weather Service (NWS), and favorable verification statistics are desirable. The 2011 NWS statistics for traditional tornado warnings indicate that the probability of detection (POD) is 70%, while the false alarm rate (FAR) is 76%. The recent Joplin, Missouri EF5 tornado event on 22 May 2011, which resulted in massive devastation and loss of life, prompted the NWS to re-evaluate the current tornado warning format. After the Joplin, MO event, the Central Region of the NWS implemented the impact-based tornado warning (IBTW) experiment in 2013. IBTWs consist of …

Rna Interference As A Tool For The Functional Analysis Of Genes In The Colorado Potato Beetle, Leptinotarsa Decemlineata (Say), Ashley Danielle Yates
Department of Entomology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
RNA interference (RNAi) is a naturally occurring phenomenon in eukaryotes in which a double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) suppresses the expression of a target gene. RNAi has markedly changed the way in which functional genetics studies are performed, especially in non-model organisms. In insects, the efficacy of RNAi is influenced by several factors, including the species and the methods of dsRNAs delivery.
The Colorado potato beetle (CPB), Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say), is a pest of the plant family Solanaceae. RNAi in the CPB is of interest for potential use in insect management and as a tool to study the interaction with host plants. …

A Case Study Of Changing Cropping Diversity And Agricultural Risk In The Doulthabad Mandal Of Telangana State In India, Srikanth Kondabolu
School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The Doulthabad[1] Mandal is a hot semi-arid agro-ecological sub-region (Rao et al. 2006) located in Mahbubnagar District on the North Telangana Plateau in the state of Telangana. Agriculture is the main occupation in this region, which is populated mostly with small and marginal farmers. This study uses the time period from 1971 to 2004 to study the variation in cropping pattern diversity and distribution of rainfall during the monsoons and understand the implications on production risk in agriculture. Quantitative methods were used in determining the changes in rainfall while qualitative methods were used to study cropping system changes. The …
Evaluation Of Pre-Harvest Screening For Antibiotics And Flunixin Meglumine In Cattle, Shuna A. Jones
Evaluation Of Pre-Harvest Screening For Antibiotics And Flunixin Meglumine In Cattle, Shuna A. Jones
School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Many antibiotics and medications used in the treatment of animals have a withdrawal time; residues are a concern for the meat industry. The most recently published 2009 USDA-FSIS Residue Program Data Report listed 135,389 Inspector-in-Charge-Generated (IICG) residue samples from 43,142,500 beef and dairy cattle inspected that year at harvest. Of these samples, 1,306 contained violative antibiotic residues and 327 violative flunixin meglumine residues. Two classes of antimicrobials comprised over half of the documented violative antimicrobial residues (beta-lactams that include ceftiofur and sulfa drugs that include sulfadimethoxine). While the violative residue rate seems small, violative residues are unacceptable. Management of carcasses …
Induced Hypothermia And Its Effects On Cardiac Arrhythmias, Shatoyia Barlow
Induced Hypothermia And Its Effects On Cardiac Arrhythmias, Shatoyia Barlow
HIM 1990-2015
The purpose of this integrated review of the literature was to determine the relationship between therapeutic hypothermia and cardiac arrhythmias. The reviewed literatures were English based articles from year 2003-2013. Relevant information from the American Heart Association and the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation was used to further enhance research results. The results of this literature review showed hypothermia treatment propensity to prolong QT interval without precipitating life-threatening arrhythmias. Although arrhythmias can be potentially increased under induced hypothermia, it has been shown that treatment is easier while under hypothermic conditions. The reviewed research also shows that hypothermia treatment should be …

Animal-Like And Depraved: Racist Stereotypes, Commercial Sex, And Black Women's Identity In New Orleans, 1825-1917, Porsha Dossie
HIM 1990-2015
My objective with this thesis is to understand how racist stereotypes and myths compounded the sale of fair-skinned black women during and after the slave trade in New Orleans, Louisiana. This commodification of black women's bodies continued well into the twentieth century, notably in New Orleans' vice district of Storyville. Called "quadroons" (a person with ¼ African ancestry) and "octoroons" (1/8 African ancestry), these women were known for their "sexual prowess" and drew in a large number of patrons. The existence of "white passing" black women complicated ideas about race and racial purity in the South. Race as a myth …

08 Fourier Analysis, Charles G. Torre
08 Fourier Analysis, Charles G. Torre
Foundations of Wave Phenomena
We now would like to show that one can build up the general solution of the wave equation by superimposing certain elementary solutions. Indeed, the elementary solutions being referred to are those discussed in §6. These elementary solutions will form a very convenient “basis” for the vector space of solutions to the wave equation, just as the normal modes provided a basis for the space of solutions in the case of coupled oscillators. Indeed, as we shall see, the elementary solutions are the normal modes for wave propagation. The principal tools needed to understand this are provided by the methods …

13 Spherical Coordinates, Charles G. Torre
13 Spherical Coordinates, Charles G. Torre
Foundations of Wave Phenomena
The spherical coordinates of a point p can be obtained by the following geometric construction. The value of r represents the distance from the point p to the origin (which you can put wherever you like). The value of ✓ is the angle between the positive z-axis and a line l drawn from the origin to p. The value of " is the angle made with the x-axis by the projection of l into the x-y plane (z = 0). Note: for points in the x-y plane, r and " (not ✓) are polar coordinates. The coordinates (r, ✓, ") …

Unlike cardiac and skeletal muscle, little is known about vascular smooth muscle mitochondrial respiration. Therefore, the present study examined mitochondrial respiratory rates in smooth muscle of healthy human feed arteries and compared with that of healthy cardiac and skeletal muscles. Cardiac, skeletal, and smooth muscles were harvested from a total of 22 subjects (53 ± 6 yr), and mitochondrial respiration was assessed in permeabilized fibers. Complex I + II, state 3 respiration, an index of oxidative phosphorylation capacity, fell progressively from cardiac to skeletal to smooth muscles (54 ± 1, 39 ± 4, and 15 ± 1 pmol·s−1·mg−1, P < 0.05, respectively). Citrate synthase (CS) activity, an index of mitochondrial density, also fell progressively from cardiac to skeletal to smooth muscles (222 ± 13, 115 ± 2, and 48 ± 2 μmol·g−1·min−1, P …
Chromatographic Analysis Of Fatty Acids Using 9-Chloromethyl-Anthracene And 2-Bromomethyl-Anthraquinone, Jesus B. Tapia
Chromatographic Analysis Of Fatty Acids Using 9-Chloromethyl-Anthracene And 2-Bromomethyl-Anthraquinone, Jesus B. Tapia
Master's Theses
Fatty acids are carboxylic acids with long alkane or alkene chains and are important components of living organisms. The presence of the carboxylic acid is analytically very important since it allows for derivatization with fluorescence reagents such as 9-chloromethyl-anthracene (9-CMA) for HPLC analysis. A method for the analysis of fatty acids using 9-CMA and 2-bromomethyl-anthraquinone (MAQ-Br) was developed. The method utilizes a modified protocol previously used for the analysis of short-chain carboxylic acids with 9-CMA. The modified protocol was applied to medium- and long-chain fatty acids for analysis by HPLC with UV-visible and fluorescence detection. After successful derivatization and analysis …

BackgroundVarious ecological and physiological mechanisms might influence the probability that two or more pathogens may simultaneously or sequentially infect a host individual. Concurrent infections can have important consequences for host condition and fitness, including elevated mortality risks. In addition, interactions between coinfecting pathogens may have important implications for transmission dynamics.MethodsHere, we explore patterns of association between two common avian pathogens (West Nile virus and avian malaria parasites) among a suburban bird community in Chicago, IL, USA that share mosquito vectors. We surveyed 1714 individual birds across 13 species for both pathogens through established molecular protocols.ResultsField investigations of haemosporidian and West …

Pull-Out Or Push-In Service Delivery Model: Conducive To Students Or Teachers?, Stacey M.L. Dawson
Education Masters
On account of controversy surrounding the subject of the most appropriate environment for a student to receive special education and related services, the researcher thought it beneficial to conduct an anonymous survey to discover current educators’ opinions on inclusive education. To collect data on this topic, an anonymous survey was sent electronically to all staff members of one elementary school ranging from grades pre-k to sixth in a large urban school district. The survey was nine questions where all questions focused on the staffs’ knowledge of inclusive education and common practices between classroom teachers and service providers. In completion of …
The Flute And Piano Works Of Sigfrid Karg-Elert: An Analytical And Contextual Study, Stephanie Dimauro
The Flute And Piano Works Of Sigfrid Karg-Elert: An Analytical And Contextual Study, Stephanie Dimauro
Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances
Sigfrid Karg-Elert (1877-1933) is one of the few composers of the early twentieth century whose style moves fluently between tonality and atonality. His most noteworthy and voluminous body of work was for the harmonium and the organ; however, he also wrote a number of wind compositions. Among these are eight works using the flute in a primary role, almost all of which were composed around the First World War. These seven flute works between 1917 and 1919 stem from Karg-Elert's time spent in a regimental band, in which he played oboe and sat next to flutist Carl Bartuschat (1882-1959). Of …
Exploration Into The Cellular Effects Of Aziridinomitosenes, Christopher M. Mallory
Exploration Into The Cellular Effects Of Aziridinomitosenes, Christopher M. Mallory
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Aziridinomitosenes (AZMs) are organic compounds structurally related to the mitomycins, a class of anti-tumor agents and antibiotics. The cytotoxicity of the mitomycins is correlated to their ability to covalently link complimentary strands of DNA, forming DNA interstrand cross-links (ICLs). Currently, there has been limited investigation into the biological activity of AZMs, likely due to difficulties in their synthesis. Our lab has synthesized and evaluated the cellular effects of two AZMs, (1S, 2S)-6-desmethyl(methylaziridino)mitosene (H/H-AZM) and (1S, 2S)-6-methyl(methylaziridino)mitosene (Me/H-AZM). We hypothesize that AZMs exhibit their cytotoxicity and cellular effects following a similar pathway to that of mitomycin C (MC) including …

Application Of A Bioenergetics Framework For Assessing Sub-Lethal Effects Of Pollutants In The Freshwater Mussel Elliptio Complanata, Christopher G. Goodchild
All Theses And Dissertations
Although biomarkers are frequently used to assess sublethal effects of contaminants, a lack of mechanistic linkages to higher-level effects limits the predictive power of biomarkers. Bioenergetics has been proposed as a framework for linking cellular effects to whole-animal effects. We investigated sublethal effects of exposure to wastewater treatment facility effluent in freshwater mussels in situ, thereby capturing ecologically relevant exposure conditions. Our study focused on the energetic biomarker AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), while also considering more traditional biomarkers like heat shock proteins (HSP70), and antioxidant enzymes (i.e., superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione-S-transferase (GST)). We examined biomarkers at mRNA and protein levels. …

An Overview Of Animal Waste Water Management: Biodgesters In The Monteverde Zone Of Costa Rica, August 2014, Chelsea Solomon, Roberto Infante Rosado, Yanelis Hez, Melissa Ortiz
Monteverde Institute: Culture, Community, and Health
There has been an increase in environmental awareness since Costa Rica promised to be carbon neutral by 2021. Governmental organizations such as a high school in Santa Elena and Earth university have taken it upon themselves to fulfill this initiative through the implementation of more environmentally conscious technologies, i.e. a biodigester at a local high school in Santa Elena. The problem was that there was no sort of investigation understanding how the community within the school and the town’s community would react to this new addition. We were also asked to give information to the school so that they may …

A Soft Condensed Matter Approach Towards Mathematical Modelling Of Mass Transport And Swelling In Food Grains, Michael Chapwanya, N. Misra
Articles
Soft condensed matter (SCM) physics has recently gained importance for a large class of engineering materials. The treatment of food materials from a soft matter perspective, however, is only at the surface and is gaining importance for understanding the complex phenomena and structure of foods. In this work, we present a theoretical treatment of navy beans from a SCM perspective to describe the hydration kinetics. We solve the transport equations within a porous matrix and employ the Flory–Huggin’s equation for polymer–solvent mixture to balance the osmotic pressure. The swelling of the legume seed is modelled as a moving boundary with …
