Textiles And The Virtual World Broadening Audience Engagement At The Textile Museum Of Canada, Roxane Shaughnessy
Textiles And The Virtual World Broadening Audience Engagement At The Textile Museum Of Canada, Roxane Shaughnessy
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
Museums with textile collections face challenges in providing meaningful public access to these cultural objects. Textiles can only be displayed for limited periods to minimize damage from light and exposure, and the fragility of most textiles requires careful handling to prevent deterioration. Textile exhibitions and special visits to storage areas provide opportunities for public engagement with textiles. However until recently, the close study of materials and techniques required direct access to the object.
In recent years, the advent of the World Wide Web, digitization, and other technologies have afforded global access to museum textile collections, and enabled those interested to …
The Aegean Wool Economies Of The Bronze Age, Marie-Louise Nosch
The Aegean Wool Economies Of The Bronze Age, Marie-Louise Nosch
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
This paper will explore the importance of wool in the emergence of complex societies during the Bronze Age in the Aegean. The 2nd millennium BC Aegean witnesses the emergence of a highly particular system of wool economy, beginning with the Minoan and followed by the Mycenaean centralized palace economies with strict administration of flocks, herders, wool, and textile production by thousands of women and children. This system monitors annual production targets and surplus production, and production strategies ensuring that the palaces’ needs are met. Textile production is the largest sector of the palace economy and employs the highest number of …

The Fabric For A City: Development Of Textile Materials During The Urbanization Period In Mediterranean Europe, Margarita Gleba
The Fabric For A City: Development Of Textile Materials During The Urbanization Period In Mediterranean Europe, Margarita Gleba
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
Ancient literary sources indicate that, by the beginning of the Common Era, different textile types and qualities were available to Roman consumers and many of the best fibres were produced in Italy, from where they spread throughout the Roman Empire in the form of sheep, raw materials or finished textiles. The variety observed during the Roman times reflects a long period of evolution, based on selective breeding and cultivation, as well as development of new and more effective processing, spinning and weaving technologies. Recent investigations demonstrate that major changes in fibre development and processing took place in the Mediterranean Europe …
Highland Complementary-Warp Weaving And The Lima Style In The Central Coast Of Peru, Ca. 200-650 C.E., Sophie Desrosiers
Highland Complementary-Warp Weaving And The Lima Style In The Central Coast Of Peru, Ca. 200-650 C.E., Sophie Desrosiers
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
For more than a century, the geometric interlocking fish or snake designs appearing on Lima style artifacts - painted ceramics and walls, engraved gourds and wooden sculptures - have been considered as reproduction of designs created through textile means. An analysis of their characteristics shows that they fit well with designs obtained with weaving techniques still practiced today in the Peruvian highlands. This discovery allows reconstruction of the models of the interlocking designs. Then, comparing the reconstructed models with the small group of textiles with similar designs excavated in Lima sites, it becomes possible to understand better the mechanism at …

Role Ambiguity In An Era Of Accountability: A Collective Case Study Of The Texas School Board President Experience, Kerri Daugbjerg
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this qualitative case study was to describe role ambiguity for three school board presidents at Rydell Independent School District in Rydell, Texas. In describing role ambiguity as the school board president perceives it, I sought to describe how role ambiguity is impacted by one's self-efficacy, state accountability standards, and transformational leadership capabilities. Research questions framing the study included: How does the school board president's self-efficacy influence role ambiguity? How does role ambiguity impact the school board president as a transformational leader in the district? How do Texas accountability standards impact role ambiguity of the school board president? …
Antisense Reduction Of The Protein Tau Attenuates Neuronal Hyperexcitability And Permits Clearance Of Intraneuronal Tau Accumulations In Vivo, Sarah Lorraine Devos
Antisense Reduction Of The Protein Tau Attenuates Neuronal Hyperexcitability And Permits Clearance Of Intraneuronal Tau Accumulations In Vivo, Sarah Lorraine Devos
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
The protein tau is a major contributor in some of the most prevalent neurodegenerative diseases, including the most common form of dementia, Alzheimer's Disease (AD). As a member of the microtubule-associated protein family, tau in enriched in the axons of mature and growing neurons, though under certain conditions, can become hyperphosphorylated and accumulate into toxic oligomeric species and aggregates. In the studies outlined here, we sought to directly target the protein tau using Antisense Oligonucleotides (ASOs) to reduce total expression of tau in vivo and assess if such a reduction could be therapeutically beneficial. To first test the feasibility of …
Characterization Of Fasting-Induced P21 Expression And Protection Of Intestinal Stem Cells, Kelsey Lynn Tinkum
Characterization Of Fasting-Induced P21 Expression And Protection Of Intestinal Stem Cells, Kelsey Lynn Tinkum
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
The cyclin dependent kinase inhibitor, p21, plays a key role in cell cycle. Additionally, the p21 gene, Cdkn1a (hereafter p21) is often used as a marker of cellular stress. To investigate p21 promoter activity under basal conditions and in response to various forms of stress, we generated knock-in imaging reporter mice that express firefly luciferase (FLuc) under the control of the endogenous p21 promoter. I demonstrated that FLuc expression and bioluminescence detection mirrored endogenous p21 protein levels and promoter activity in vivo. Contrary to previously known roles for p53-mediate expression of p21, imaging of reporter cells demonstrated that p53 prevented …

GPCR/G protein signaling is a critical component of neuronal signal transduction and function. G protein signaling is regulated by a family of regulator of G protein signaling (RGS) proteins that act as GTPase activating proteins (GAPs) for Gα subunits. In the retina, the R7-RGS family of RGS proteins which specifically act as GAPs toward Gi/o, are critical regulators …

Examining An Implicit Mechanism Of Recognition Criterion Regulation, Justin Christopher Cox
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
A variety of factors influence how we make decisions about our own memories. When judging a person on the street as novel or familiar, one appeals to an internal cutoff value known as a decision criterion; if an individual is less familiar than this criterion value, he is judged as new, and vice versa. A host of research has demonstrated that people can explicitly and judiciously update their decision criteria based on a variety of factors such as the prevalence of old and new items, rewards and punishments, and simple instructions. One oft overlooked variable that affects criterion placement and …
Discounting Of Probabilistic Reinforcers By Pigeons, Luis Filipe Lobo De Oliveira
Discounting Of Probabilistic Reinforcers By Pigeons, Luis Filipe Lobo De Oliveira
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
The phenomenon of probability discounting - the decrease in the subjective value of an outcome as the likelihood of its receipt decreases - has been an increasingly explored area of research with human participants, but has received little attention with nonhuman animals. The few studies that have attempted to obtain probability discounting functions with animals have serious limitations. For example, in Wilhelm and Mitchell's (2008) study with rats, the experienced probabilities often differed markedly from the programmed probabilities. Green, Myerson, and Calvert's study with pigeons (2010) used repeated gambles rather than one-shot choices, which is the typical situation studied with …
Dual Roles Of Interferon Stimulated Gene-15 During Respiratory Virus Infection, David James Morales
Dual Roles Of Interferon Stimulated Gene-15 During Respiratory Virus Infection, David James Morales
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
ISG15 is a diubiquitin-like posttranslational modifier and one of the most rapidly induced genes upon type I interferon stimulation. Hundreds of host proteins have been identified as targets of ISG15 conjugation after interferon stimulation, and a number of viral proteins have been shown to be modified by ISG15 during infection. Given the known importance of posttranslational protein modification in the regulation of cellular biology, understanding how ISG15 affects the interferon response and virus replication has been of considerable interest. ISG15 deficient mice have previously been shown to exhibit increased susceptibility to a number of different viruses, including influenza A and …

Characterization Of A Novel Npc1i1061t Knock-In Mouse Model Of Niemann-Pick Type C1 Disease, Maria A. Praggastis
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Niemann-Pick Type C (NPC) disease is a fatal pediatric cholesterol storage disease that is caused by mutations in either the npc1 or npc2 genes. Loss of function of either gene results in toxic storage of free cholesterol in the lysosomes due to a cholesterol trafficking defect. In humans the free cholesterol accumulation leads to Purkinje cell loss in the cerebellum and is accompanied by neurodegenerative symptoms that include ataxia, vertical supranuclear gaze palsy, and decreased motor function. Most NPC1 patients succumb to the disease within the first two decades of life.
The most prevalent mutation, NPC1I1061T, resides within the cysteine-rich …
The Roles Of Mir-155 And Mir-15/16 In Natural Killer Cell Function And Maturation, Ryan Patrick Sullivan
The Roles Of Mir-155 And Mir-15/16 In Natural Killer Cell Function And Maturation, Ryan Patrick Sullivan
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Natural Killer (NK) cells are a crucial component of the immune system, with a role in both early host defense against pathogens and tumor immunosurveillance. NK cells develop in the bone marrow from a common lymphoid precursor, along with T and B cells, but undergo a separate education process. Additional maturation in the periphery makes NK cells fully competent to protect the host. NK cells protect the host via two primary effector pathways - direct cytotoxicity, and indirect cytokine/chemokine production (e.g. IFN-g), which shapes the subsequent adaptive immune response. The importance of this role of NK cells in human health …
Large-Scale Cellular Imaging Of Neuronal Activity: A Study Of Neural Individuality And A Method For Imaging Mouse Cortex, Pei Sabrina Xu
Large-Scale Cellular Imaging Of Neuronal Activity: A Study Of Neural Individuality And A Method For Imaging Mouse Cortex, Pei Sabrina Xu
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
The brain contains an enormous number of neurons with diverse gene expression, morphology, and connectivity. These neurons exhibit distinct activity in the course of behaviors. The study of neural coding of a specific behavior necessitates recording activity from multifarious neurons in the circuit. One appealing approach is to simultaneously image the activity of a very large neuronal population at cellular resolution. However, recording calcium signals from tens of thousands of neurons at one time is not trivial. The gold standard technique, two-photon laser-scanning microscopy, typically permits recording from hundreds of neurons. Recently, we developed objective-coupled planar illumination (OCPI) microscopy, which uses …
Phosphorylation Regulation Of T-Lymphocyte Migration, Xiaolu Xu
Phosphorylation Regulation Of T-Lymphocyte Migration, Xiaolu Xu
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Immune surveillance requires efficient trafficking of leukocytes throughout the body. To achieve this, leukocytes have evolved to be highly migratory and responsive to environmental cues, which provide guidance for proper tissue distribution. The translation of external environmental cues to intracellular physical changes in leukocytes requires a cascade of receptors, signal transducers, and mechanical effectors. My doctoral research focused on using T-cells as a model to study the unique cellular process of how signal transducers interact with and regulate mechanical effectors in fast migrating immune cells. Specifically, it is known that the signal transducer Mst1 kinase is required for T-cell polarization, …
Restoring Upper Extremity Mobility Through Functional Neuromuscular Stimulation Using Macro Sieve Electrodes, Erik R. Zellmer
Restoring Upper Extremity Mobility Through Functional Neuromuscular Stimulation Using Macro Sieve Electrodes, Erik R. Zellmer
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
The last decade has seen the advent of brain computer interfaces able to extract precise motor intentions from cortical activity of human subjects. It is possible to convert captured motor intentions into movement through coordinated, artificially induced, neuromuscular stimulation using peripheral nerve interfaces. Our lab has developed and tested a new type of peripheral nerve electrode called the Macro-Sieve electrode which exhibits excellent chronic stability and recruitment selectivity. Work presented in this thesis uses computational modeling to study the interaction between Macro-Sieve electrodes and regenerated peripheral nerves. It provides a detailed understanding of how regenerated fibers, both on an individual …

Beyond Carve-Outs And Toward Reliance: A Normative Framework For Cross-Border Insolvency Choice Of Law, John A. E. Pottow
Articles
The title of this Article purports to develop a normative framework for cross-border insolvency choice of law. That can be a task of varying scope, so at the outset any pretense of ambition for a wholly new choice of law model should be dispelled. Indeed, at the most generalized level, bankruptcy choice of law theory has already been fully ventilated in the well-rehearsed universalism versus territorialism debates. And it has been settled. The universalists, at least as a normative matter, appear to have won: choice of law, as it is increasingly accepted, should be determined by the debtor's center of …
The Regulation Of Glucose Metabolism During Osteoblast Differentiation, Emel Esen
The Regulation Of Glucose Metabolism During Osteoblast Differentiation, Emel Esen
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Differentiation and cell-specific functions are coupled with metabolic alterations to meet the needs of the cell. In this thesis, I have investigated the alterations of cellular metabolism in osteoblast-lineage cells in response to two different bone anabolic signals, WNT and PTH. I have further elucidated the mechanism underlying the metabolic changes, and have explored the functional importance of such changes for bone anabolism.
Osteoblasts, the principal bone-forming cells, are differentiated from mesenchymal progenitor cells through sequential stages. These stages are identifiable by molecular markers, cell morphology and location. Transcription factors and developmental signals important for osteoblast differentiation have been studied …
Regulation Of Fluid-Phase Uptake In Podocytes By Albumin-Associated Lipids, Jun-Jae Chung
Regulation Of Fluid-Phase Uptake In Podocytes By Albumin-Associated Lipids, Jun-Jae Chung
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
I. Podocytes are specialized epithelial cells in the kidney glomerulus that play important structural and functional roles in maintaining the filtration barrier. In nephrotic syndrome, a major breakdown of the kidney filtration barrier associated with proteinuria, hyperlipidemia, and edema, podocytes undergo changes in morphology and appear to internalize serum proteins. We postulated that fluid-phase uptake by podocytes might play a role in maintaining the integrity of the filtration barrier. Using fluid-phase tracers, we show that podocytes in vivo actively internalize fluid from the serum and that the rate of internalization is enhanced when the filtration barrier is disrupted. In vitro …

Asset Holdings And Undernutrition Of Young Children: Evidence From China Health And Nutrition Survey, Minchao Jin
Asset Holdings And Undernutrition Of Young Children: Evidence From China Health And Nutrition Survey, Minchao Jin
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Undernutrition is an underlying determinant of 45% of all childhood deaths annually, resulting in 3.1 million deaths to children less than five years globally (Black et al., 2013). The adverse effects of undernutrition, especially chronic undernutrition, could cause impaired physical growth, mental development retardation, low productivity and poverty during adulthood, and undernutrition of next generation. Worldwide, over 200 million children are undernourished (Black et al., 2013). Thus, there is an imperative to identify effective preventive actions or interventions for child undernutrition. Studies have documented links between undernutrition and low income, but few has tackling the causation from assets to child …

Dapk3 Suppresses Mammary Acini Morphogenesis And Is Required For Mouse Development, Brandon Kocher
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Over the past decade several lines of research have indicated that DAPK3, a member of the serine/threonine death associated protein kinase (DAPK) family, plays an important role in various signaling pathways important to tissue homeostasis and mammalian biology. Considered to be a putative tumor suppressor, the molecular mechanisms by which DAPK3 exerts its tumor suppressor functions are not fully understood. Furthermore, unlike other DAPK family members, DAPK3 has received little attention regarding its physiological roles in vivo due to the lack of knockout animals. To address these gaps in our fundamental understanding of DAPK3 we
