Exploring Parallels In The Bible, The Analects, And The Epic Of Gilgamesh, Cassidy Mcfarling
Exploring Parallels In The Bible, The Analects, And The Epic Of Gilgamesh, Cassidy Mcfarling
University Honors Program
The primary aim of this thesis is to explore parallels in The Epic of Gilgamesh, The Analects, and the Bible. By tracking and describing seven different areas of resemblance, the research illustrates philosophical and narrative overlap. More importantly, an examination of the psychological and social forces behind such literature suggests that correspondence in wisdom literature reveals universal concerns and desires that transcend cultural boundary.

Memory Profiles In Schizophrenia: A Neuropsychological Comparison With Temporal Lobe Epilepsy, S. Laura Lundy
Psychology ETDs
Previous research has demonstrated various neuroanatomical and neuropsychological abnormalities in schizophrenia. Although results vary depending on population characteristics, medication status, imaging methodology, and choice of cognitive assessment measures, overall results suggest decreased cerebral volume within frontal and temporal lobes and in individual structures, particularly hippocampus, within these regions; abnormal connectivity within fronto-temporal networks; and deficits in executive function, working memory, processing speed, and memory, with verbal memory deficits more reliably demonstrated than non-verbal impairment. In particular, left-hemisphere hippocampal-dependent verbal memory impairments have been proposed to be a core feature of schizophrenia, as these deficits are reliably demonstrated in first-episode, medication-na\xefve …

High-Activity Mutants Of Butyrylcholinesterase For Cocaine Hydrolysis And Method Of Generating The Same, Chang-Guo Zhan, Hoon Cho, Hsin-Hsiung Tai
Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Patents
A novel computational method and generation of mutant butyrylcholinesterase for cocaine hydrolysis is provided. The method includes molecular modeling a possible BChE mutant and conducting molecular dynamics simulations and hybrid quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical calculations thereby providing a screening method of possible BChE mutants by predicting which mutant will lead to a more stable transition state for a rate determining step. Site-directed mutagenesis, protein expression, and protein activity is conducted for mutants determined computationally as being good candidates for possible BChE mutants, i.e., ones predicted to have higher catalytic efficiency as compared with wild-type BChE. In addition, mutants A199S/A328W/Y332G, A199S/F227A/A328W/Y332G, A199S/S287G/A328W/Y332G, …

The next generation of system biology and drug discovery tools will be functional in vitro systems composed of human cells in defined serum-free systems. These functional in vitro systems will enable understanding beyond the single cell level directly to the human condition and enable the faster and least expensive translation of basic research to therapeutics. This study reports the first pure human-based in vitro Neuromuscular Junction (NMJ) system by demonstrating the co-culture of motoneurons and skeletal muscle (SKMs) derived from human stem cells, in a defined, serum-free medium and on a patternable non-biological surface.

Decades of research have established that the most effective treatment for sickle cell disease (SCD) is increased fetal hemoglobin (HbF). Identification of a drug specific for inducing γ-globin expression in pediatric and adult patients, with minimal off-target effects, continues to be an elusive goal. One hurdle has been an assay amenable to a high-throughput screen (HTS) of chemicals that displays a robust γ-globin off-on switch to identify potential lead compounds. Assay systems developed in our labs to understand the mechanisms underlying the γ- to β-globin gene expression switch during development has allowed us to generate a cell-based assay that was …

Relations Of Water Quality, Land Use Nuffers, And Diatom Communities Of Connected Depressions Within The Cache River Watershed, Arkansas, Usa, David R. L. Burge
Student Theses and Dissertations
Over the past century, the Mississippi Alluvial Plain Ecoregion was altered from forest to agriculture. Associated with increased adjacent agriculture, water quality perturbations identified in Cache River connected depressions included elevated pH, DO, and conductivity. Non-metric Multidimensional Scaling indicated significant changes in the epidendric and benthic diatom communities in relation to conductivity and adjacent agriculture. The communities of less-impacted wetlands were dominated by species in the genera Eunotia, Gomphonema, and Pinnularia shifted towards communities dominated by Diadesmis contenta and Nitschia clausii in the more disturbed wetlands. Also, correlations among autecological metrics showed the relative abundance of planktonic diatoms increased and …

Two Classes Of Nucleic Acid Translocation Motors: Rotation And Revolution Without Rotation, Peixuan Guo, Ian Grainge, Zhengyi Zhao, Mario Vieweger
Markey Cancer Center Faculty Publications
Biomotors are extensively involved in biological processes including cell mitosis, bacterial binary fission, DNA replication, DNA repair, homologous recombination, Holliday junction resolution, RNA transcription, and viral genome packaging. Traditionally, they were classified into two categories including linear and rotation motors. In 2013, a third class of motor by revolution mechanism without rotation was discovered. In this issue of "Structure and mechanisms of nanomotors in the cells", four comprehensive reviews are published to address the latest advancements of the structure and motion mechanism of a variety of biomotors in archaea, animal viruses, bacteria, and bacteriophages.

Snp-E: A New Method For Multiple Sequence Alignments Analysis And Accurate Single Nucleotide Polymorphism Evaluation, David A. Lightfoot, Naghmeh Hemmati, Larry A. Sholeh

Identification of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and insertion-deletion mutations are important for discovering the connection between the genetic mutations and complex diseases. The objective of this study was to develop a sensitive and accurate computational method for SNP detection among Multiple Sequence Alignments (MSAs) to be run on Microsoft Office SuiteTM and WindowsTM. The SNP-Evaluator, was designed to simulate the process of human eye visual change-identification. Analysis of three 82-Kbp genomic loci derived from Sanger sequencing and the corresponding SNPs from 31 genomes from IlluminaTM sequencing of soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) demonstrated that the SNP-E was an effective …

Asenapine Sensitization From Adolescence To Adulthood And Its Potential Molecular Basis, Qing Shu, Rongyin Qin, Yingzhu Chen, Gang Hu, Ming Li
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Asenapine is a new antipsychotic drug that induces a long-lasting behavioral sensitization in adult rats. The present study investigated the developmental impacts of adolescent asenapine treatment on drug sensitivity and on 3 proteins implicated in the action of antipsychotic drugs (i.e. Brainderived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), dopamine D2 receptor, and ΔFosB) in adulthood. Male adolescent Sprague-Dawley rats (postnatal days, P 43-48) were first treated with asenapine (0.05, 0.10 or 0.20 mg/kg, sc) and tested in the conditioned avoidance or PCP (2.0 mg/kg, sc)-induced hyperlocomotion tasks for 5 days. After they became adults (∼P 76), asenapine sensitization was assessed in a …

We tested the hypothesis that inhibition of EP3 receptors enhances cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 expression in the thick ascending limb (TAL) induced by hypertonic stimuli. COX-2 protein expression in the outer medulla increased approximately twofold in mice given free access to 1% NaCl in the drinking water for 3 days. The increase was associated with an approximate threefold elevation in COX-2 mRNA accumulation and an increase in PGE2 production by isolated medullary (m)TAL tubules from 77.3 ± 8.4 to 165.7 ± 10.8 pg/mg protein. Moreover, administration of NS-398 abolished the increase in PGE2 production induced by 1% NaCl. EP3 receptor mRNA levels …
