Carboxymethylcellulose Hydrogels Support Central Nervous System-Derived Tumor-Cell Chemotactic Migration: Comparison With Conventional Extracellular Matrix Macromolecules, Tanya Singh, Chandrasekhar Kothapalli, Devika Varma, Steven B. Nicoll, Maribel Vazquez

Publications and Research

The local microenvironment plays an important role in maintaining the dynamics of the extracellular matrix and the cell-extracellular matrix relationship. The extracellular matrix is a complex network of macromolecules with distinct mechanical and biochemical characteristics. Disruptions in extracellular matrix homeostasis are associated with the onset of cancer. The extracellular matrix becomes highly disorganized, and the cell-matrix relationship changes, resulting in altered cell-signaling processes and metastasis. Medulloblastoma is one of the most common malignant pediatric brain tumors in the United States. In order to gain a better understanding of the interplay between cell-extracellular matrix interactions and cell-migratory responses in tumors, eight …

Family Affairs Newsletter 2014-10-01, Zack Paakkonen

Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)

FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

Paternally Expressed Peg3 Controls Maternally Expressed Zim1 As A Trans Factor, An Ye, Hongzhi He, Joomyeong Kim

Faculty Publications

© 2014 Ye et al. The expression of two adjacent imprinted genes, Peg3 and Zim1, is inversely correlated: down-regulation of Peg3 coinciding with up-regulation of Zim1. The current study characterized this inverse correlation using a mutant allele targeting Peg3. According to the results, the mutation on the paternal allele of Peg3 resulted in a dramatic increase in the transcription levels of the maternal allele of Zim1, suggesting the involvement of unknown trans factors in this trans-allelic event. Subsequent ChIP experiments revealed that the protein encoded by Peg3 itself binds to the zinc finger exon of Zim1, which is modified with …

Structural Characterization Of Nanofiber Silk Produced By Embiopterans (Webspinners), J. Bennett Addison, Thomas M. Osborn Popp, Warner S. Weber, Janice Edgerly-Rooks, Gregory P. Holland, Jeffery L. Yarger Sep 2014

Structural Characterization Of Nanofiber Silk Produced By Embiopterans (Webspinners), J. Bennett Addison, Thomas M. Osborn Popp, Warner S. Weber, Janice Edgerly-Rooks, Gregory P. Holland, Jeffery L. Yarger

Biology

Embiopterans produce silken galleries and sheets using exceptionally fine silk fibers in which they live and breed. In this study, we use electron microscopy (EM), Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (ssNMR) techniques to elucidate the molecular level protein structure of webspinner (embiid) silks. Silks from two species Antipaluria urichi and Aposthonia ceylonica are studied in this work. Electron microscopy images show that the fibers are about 90–100 nm in diameter, making webspinner silks among the finest of all known animal silks. Structural studies reveal that the silk protein core is dominated …

Identifying Tier-Two At Risk Students In New Jersey Public Schools, Danisha Moodie Sep 2014

Identifying Tier-Two At Risk Students In New Jersey Public Schools, Danisha Moodie

Theses and Dissertations

Actions to improve student's socio-emotional success in public education by attempting to identify, and eliminate bullying behaviors within educational institution are a key focus for many educators. Harassment, intimidation and bullying behaviors (HIB) are recognized as a solemn issue across the nation. According to the Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights Act, public schools are required to report (HIB) incidents to the New Jersey Department of Education. Moreover, coupled with the mandated guidelines of this new legislation many public schools within New Jersey have also adopted positive behavior interventions. This may help in identifying at-risk students who may require a greater level …

Student Works (2010-2019)

Composite scaffolds of polycaprolactone (PCL) and bovine derived hydroxyapatite (HA) were produced by blending HA into PCL solution followed by electrospinning. This study mainly focused on studying the materials morphology, characteristics and interactions between the materials and cells. Six groups of scaffolds based on the weight ratio of HA in proportion to PCL were prepared (0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40% and 50%). The scaffolds were studied by infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR), 3D confocal laser microscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) in order to determine the chemical and thermal properties as well as imaging the scaffold to cell interactions. New-hoof growth is regarded as the most reliable metric for predicting age of newborn ungulates, but variation in estimated age among hoof-growth equations that have been developed may affect estimates of survival in staggered-entry models. We used known-age newborns to evaluate variation in age estimates among existing hoof-growth equations and to determine the consequences of that variation on survival estimates. During 2001–2009, we captured and radiocollared 174 newborn (#24-hrs old) ungulates: 76 white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in Minnesota and South Dakota, 61 mule deer (O. hemionus) in California, and 37 pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) in South Dakota. Estimated age of known-age …

Withaferin A Alone And In Combination With Cisplatin Suppresses Growth And Metastasis Of Ovarian Cancer By Targeting Putative Cancer Stem Cells., Sham S. Kakar, Mariusz Z. Ratajczak, Karen S. Powell, Mana Moghadamfalahi, Donald M. Miller, Surinder K. Batra, Sanjay K. Singh

Journal Articles: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

Currently, the treatment for ovarian cancer entails cytoreductive surgery followed by chemotherapy, mainly, carboplatin combined with paclitaxel. Although this regimen is initially effective in a high percentage of cases, unfortunately within few months of initial treatment, tumor relapse occurs because of platinum-resistance. This is attributed to chemo-resistance of cancer stem cells (CSCs). Herein we show for the first time that withaferin A (WFA), a bioactive compound isolated from the plant Withania somnifera, when used alone or in combination with cisplatin (CIS) targets putative CSCs. Treatment of nude mice bearing orthotopic ovarian tumors generated by injecting human ovarian epithelial cancer cell …

De Novo Transcriptome Of The Hemimetabolous German Cockroach (Blattella Germanica), Xiaojie Zhou, Kun Qian, Ying Tong, Junwei Jerry Zhu, Xinghui Qiu, Xiaopeng Zeng

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Background: The German cockroach, Blattella germanica, is an important insect pest that transmits various pathogens mechanically and causes severe allergic diseases. This insect has long served as a model system for studies of insect biology, physiology and ecology. However, the lack of genome or transcriptome information heavily hinder our further understanding about the German cockroach in every aspect at a molecular level and on a genome-wide scale. To explore the transcriptome and identify unique sequences of interest, we subjected the B. germanica transcriptome to massively parallel pyrosequencing and generated the first reference transcriptome for B. germanica.

Methodology/Principal Findings: A …

The Facial Feedback Hypothesis: Does It Apply To People With Schizophrenia?, Emily Drake Sep 2014

The Facial Feedback Hypothesis: Does It Apply To People With Schizophrenia?, Emily Drake

Psychology and Counseling Theses

The Facial Feedback Hypothesis (FFH) states that emotions are induced or enhanced by one's own facial expression. Lack of accurate empathy, deficits in the ability to read facial expressions, and anhedonia are all symptoms found in schizophrenia. These symptoms have a dramatic impact on schizophrenia patients; the levels of those symptoms often determining functional outcome. Few studies exist on facial feedback in schizophrenia and those that do are conflicting in their views as to whether or not FFH applies to people with schizophrenia. This study measured level of positive affect and how it is affected by facial expression. Controls assigned …

Innovations In Research With Medically Fragile Populations: Using Bulletin Board Focus Groups, Karen Cook, Susan Jack, Hal Siden, Lehana Thabane, Gina Browne

The Qualitative Report

A new group of medically fragile young adults are graduating from pediatric palliative care programs with limited expectations to live beyond early adulthood, and no comparable adult services to support their complex needs. Accessing this population is difficult because of the complexity of their conditions, the extensive personal and equipment supports that limit feasibility for travel, and divergent communication abilities. Therefore, we undertook a descriptive case study using an asynchronous modification of an online focus group, a bulletin board focus group (BBFG). The greatest strengths of the BBFG are the appeal of this methodology for young adults and the multi …

The Qualitative Report

The following observations have emerged from the author’s research experience involving the recruitment of focus group participants for a qualitative study on job search behaviors using technology. It is argued that Internet forums and message boards provide researchers with a robust approach to recruiting participants for qualitative study purposes. Advantages and characteristics of online communities are outlined to inform future practices based on the experience of engaging job-seekers who frequent a career advice board on the Internet. Challenges and limitations inherent to this methodology are also explored with techniques offered for maximizing the effectiveness of future recruitment. Use of Internet …

Hiv-1 Transgenic Rats Display Alterations In Immunophenotype And Cellular Responses Associated With Aging, Susan J. Abbondanzo Sep 2014

Hiv-1 Transgenic Rats Display Alterations In Immunophenotype And Cellular Responses Associated With Aging, Susan J. Abbondanzo

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Advances in anti-retroviral therapy over the last two decades have allowed life expectancy in patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus to approach that of the general population. The process of aging in mammalian species, including rats, results in changes with immune response, immunological phenotypes, and ultimately, increased susceptibility to many infectious diseases. In order to investigate the immunological pathologies associated with chronic HIV-1 disease, particularly in aged individuals, the HIV-1 transgenic (HIV-1Tg) rat model was utilized. Age matched animals were challenged using lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to determine immunological modification of HIV-1Tg animals throughout the aging process. LPS is known to …

Trans‐Spinal Direct Current Stimulation Modifies Spinal Cord Excitability Through Synaptic And Axonal Mechanisms, Zaghloul Ahmed Sep 2014

Trans‐Spinal Direct Current Stimulation Modifies Spinal Cord Excitability Through Synaptic And Axonal Mechanisms, Zaghloul Ahmed

Publications and Research

Abstract The spinal cord is extremely complex. Therefore, trans‐spinal direct current stimulation (tsDCS) is expected to produce a multitude of neurophysiological changes. Here, we asked how tsDCS differentially affects synaptic and nonsynaptic transmission. We investigated the effects of tsDCS on synaptically mediated responses by stimulating the medullary longitudinal fascicle and recording responses in the sciatic nerve and triceps and tibialis anterior muscles. Response amplitude was increased during cathodal‐tsDCS (c‐tsDCS), but reduced during anodal‐tsDCS (a‐tsDCS). After‐effects were dependent on the frequency of the test stimulation. c‐tsDCS‐reduced responses evoked by low‐frequency (0.5 Hz) test stimulation and increased responses evoked by high‐frequency (400 …

Dionysian Biopolitics: Karl Kerényi’S Concept Of Indestructible Life, Kristóf Fenyvesi Sep 2014

Dionysian Biopolitics: Karl Kerényi’S Concept Of Indestructible Life, Kristóf Fenyvesi

Comparative Philosophy

Scholar of religion Karl Kerényi’s last book, Dionysos, is a grand attempt at reinterpreting ζωη (zoe), the Greek concept of indestructible life, which he distinguishes from βίος (bios), finite life. In Kerényi’s view, the meaning and sensual experience of zoe was expressed in its richest form in the Cretan beginnings of the cult of Dionysos. The major characteristics of this cult, as Kerényi describes, were beyond the cultural, political, and sexual limits of the Christian interpretations of life and nature. Searching for modern analogies to zoe, Kerényi explains the idea in relation to molecular biology’s minimum definition of life. Despite …

Ecological Tension: Between Minimum And Maximum Changes, Changfu Xu Sep 2014

Ecological Tension: Between Minimum And Maximum Changes, Changfu Xu

Comparative Philosophy

This article elaborates the conditions as well as four potential modes of the ecological problem: (1) The mode of the absolute minimization of the ecological problem: minimum population plus minimum Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which is characterized by the quantity of destruction being less than the quantity of natural rehabilitation of an ecosystem. This mode is the poorest mode with minimum change. (2) The mode of the relative minimization of the ecological problem: minimum population plus maximization of GDP, which is characterized by the quantity of destruction being less than the quantity of both natural rehabilitation and human rehabilitation of …

Anti-Nature In Nature Itself, Ryōsuke Ōhashi Sep 2014

Anti-Nature In Nature Itself, Ryōsuke Ōhashi

Comparative Philosophy

Nature and civilization are often regarded in opposition to each other. However, civilization employs technologies and is based on laws of nature. Also, the historical world is a result of the development of the natural world. An “anti-nature” must thus be contained somewhere within nature. The idea of “anti-nature” is neither alien to the Eastern nor to the Western traditional concepts of nature. The philosophy of Lao Zi never embraces mere naturalism. Lao Zi has observed that things in the world are not always “so on their own” but rather in the mode of anti-nature. Anti-nature in nature itself does …
