All Capstone Projects
In the academic year of 2014-2015, Governors State University will be accepting and enrolling freshman into the university. Therefore, the chemistry department will be offering general chemistry for the first time in its history. Now is the time to introduce the concept of Green Chemistry. Green Chemistry is not a new class but a philosophy that the department or at least the individual experiments within a lab course needs to looks at. There are 12 Principles of Green Chemistry:
- Prevention
- Atom Economy
- Less Hazardous Chemical Syntheses
- Designing Safer Chemicals
- Safer Solvents and Auxiliaries
- Design for Energy Efficiency
- Use of Renewable …
Miller'S Promise: Re-Evaluating Extreme Criminal Sentences For Children, Nick Straley
Miller'S Promise: Re-Evaluating Extreme Criminal Sentences For Children, Nick Straley
Washington Law Review
Scientific, legal, and societal notions about youth have come together to reaffirm an age-old concept—children are different and they change as they grow older. In recent decisions, the United States Supreme Court has required courts and legislatures to take a new look at extreme criminal sentences imposed upon children. Life without parole sentences and decades-long, determinate sentences are constitutionally suspect when applied to children because they fail to adequately account for the dynamism of youth. Miller v. Alabama and Graham v. Florida announced two important principles: (1) that an extreme sentence can only be imposed upon a child following an …
The Role Of Adiponectin And The Adipocyte In Energy Metabolism And Inflammation, Sheila Kay Jacobi
The Role Of Adiponectin And The Adipocyte In Energy Metabolism And Inflammation, Sheila Kay Jacobi
Open Access Dissertations
A series of experiments were conducted to characterize the autocrine role of adiponectin in modulating fatty acid metabolism and inflammation in the pig. In the first study, we cloned and sequenced the porcine adiponectin open reading frame and evaluated the regulation of adiponectin, in vitro and in vivo. The porcine sequence shares approximately 88, 86, 85 and 83% homology with the dog, human, cow and mouse adiponectin, respectively, and 79–83% similarity with dog, human, cow and mouse proteins at the amino acid level, based on the translated porcine sequence and GenBank submissions for the other species. Analysis of serum from …

Within the country of Tanzania lies a vast ecosystem known as the Serengeti. This unique landscape, primarily of grasslands and woodlands, shapes the seasonal feeding habits of the abundant wildlife that call the area home. While these feeding habits on a large spatial scale are well understood, such behavior within a specie’s specific environment remains of interest. With the theory of optimal foraging in mind, which considers how animals should look for and select food (Green, 1990), I studied the foraging habits of resident Burchell’s zebra (Equus burchelli) by observing if they move and forage among distinct resource …

Influence Of Sex On Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Risk And Treatment Outcomes, Shambhu Aryal, Enrique Diaz-Guzman, David M. Mannino
Preventive Medicine and Environmental Health Faculty Publications
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), one of the most common chronic diseases and a leading cause of death, has historically been considered a disease of men. However, there has been a rapid increase in the prevalence, morbidity, and mortality of COPD in women over the last two decades. This has largely been attributed to historical increases in tobacco consumption among women. But the influence of sex on COPD is complex and involves several other factors, including differential susceptibility to the effects of tobacco, anatomic, hormonal, and behavioral differences, and differential response to therapy. Interestingly, nonsmokers with COPD are more likely …

Social Regulation Of Reproduction In Male Cichlid Fishes, Karen P. Maruska
Social Regulation Of Reproduction In Male Cichlid Fishes, Karen P. Maruska
Faculty Publications
© 2014 Elsevier Inc. Social interactions and relative positions within a dominance hierarchy have helped shape the evolution of reproduction in many animals. Since reproduction is crucial in all animals, and rank typically regulates access to reproductive opportunities, understanding the mechanisms that regulate socially-induced reproductive processes is extremely important. How does position in a dominance hierarchy impact an individual's reproductive behavior, morphology, and physiology? Teleost fishes, and cichlids in particular, are ideally-suited models for studying how social status influences reproduction on multiple levels of biological organization. Here I review the current knowledge on the reproductive behavioral and physiological consequences of …

Message from President: A prominent leader on a rather large Louisiana university recently opened his monthly letter to the campus community with an announcement, in bold-face type, that all may rejoice in the discovery that incoming students had averaged 25.82 on the ACT entrance examination. That, with two-digit decimal accuracy, while the retirement system sweeps away two-digit full-integer percentages of faculty retirement money and while more than two layers of paint peel away in almost every decaying academic building. Setting aside the obvious problems with the physical and economic conditions under which academic professionals toil, one can only wonder what …
The Early History Of Chance In Evolution, Charles H. Pence
The Early History Of Chance In Evolution, Charles H. Pence
Faculty Publications
Work throughout the history and philosophy of biology frequently employs ‘chance’, ‘unpredictability’, ‘probability’, and many similar terms. One common way of understanding how these concepts were introduced in evolution focuses on two central issues: the first use of statistical methods in evolution (Galton), and the first use of the concept of “objective chance” in evolution (Wright). I argue that while this approach has merit, it fails to fully capture interesting philosophical reflections on the role of chance expounded by two of Galton's students, Karl Pearson and W.F.R. Weldon. Considering a question more familiar from contemporary philosophy of biology—the relationship between …

Two adjustment models were applied to a dataset of bone-mineral density (BMD) and bone-mineral content (BMC) from dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) measurements of pediatric patients with Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS). One model used weight, height and % body fat (WHF) in the calculation of Z-scores in addition to race, sex and age already included in the standard model. As percent body fat is not always available, a second model with only weight and height was also examined (WH).
Plant Species And Soil Type Effects On Root Characteristics, Microbiota And Plant-Soil Feedback Responses In Four Prairie Species, Charles J. Impastato
Plant Species And Soil Type Effects On Root Characteristics, Microbiota And Plant-Soil Feedback Responses In Four Prairie Species, Charles J. Impastato
All Student Theses and Dissertations
Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) form a relationship with a multitude of host plants that is estimated to include 70-90% of terrestrial plant species over a wide range of environments. AMF and other microbiota, as well as abiotic factors are an important component of plant-soil feedback systems. The effects of plant species and soil type on root characteristics, plant-soil feedback and influence on microbiota and arbuscular mycorrhizal colonization were assessed through a manipulative laboratory study. Aster laevis, Parthenium integrifolium, Aster novae-angliae and Andropogon gerardii were grown in sterilized control soil and soil collected from beneath monocultures of A. laevis, P. integrifolium, …
