Traditional Feng Shui Architecture As An Inspiration For The Development Of Green Buildings, Su Bo Oct 2014

Traditional Feng Shui Architecture As An Inspiration For The Development Of Green Buildings, Su Bo

eJournal of Public Affairs

Feng Shui, one of the three pillars that support China’s ancient architectural theory, was the soul of Chinese traditional architecture during its five thousand years history. It advocated the harmony between mankind and nature which perfectly coincides with the concepts of modern green buildings. Feng Shui includes geomantic astronomy, geography, human information science, and other fields. Because of the lack of systemic scientific knowledge associated with Fen Shui, it has a mystical character bordering at times on superstition. This paper analyzes the culture essence of Feng Shui and explores the relationship between traditional geomantic omen and architectural aesthetics. This paper …

Neonatal Nmda Receptor Blockade Disrupts Spike Timing And Glutamatergic Synapses In Fast Spiking Interneurons In A Nmda Receptor Hypofunction Model Of Schizophrenia, Kevin S. Jones, Joshua G. Corbin, Molly M. Huntsman Oct 2014

Neonatal Nmda Receptor Blockade Disrupts Spike Timing And Glutamatergic Synapses In Fast Spiking Interneurons In A Nmda Receptor Hypofunction Model Of Schizophrenia, Kevin S. Jones, Joshua G. Corbin, Molly M. Huntsman

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

The dysfunction of parvalbumin-positive, fast-spiking interneurons (FSI) is considered a primary contributor to the pathophysiology of schizophrenia (SZ), but deficits in FSI physiology have not been explicitly characterized. We show for the first time, that a widely-employed model of schizophrenia minimizes first spike latency and increases GluN2B-mediated current in neocortical FSIs. The reduction in FSI first-spike latency coincides with reduced expression of the Kv1.1 potassium channel subunit which provides a biophysical explanation for the abnormal spiking behavior. Similarly, the increase in NMDA current coincides with enhanced expression of the GluN2B NMDA receptor subunit, specifically in FSIs. In this study mice …

Indigenous Politics, Sumak Kawsay, And Community Tourism: A Case Study From Amazonian Ecuador, Christopher Jarrett Oct 2014

Indigenous Politics, Sumak Kawsay, And Community Tourism: A Case Study From Amazonian Ecuador, Christopher Jarrett

Southern Anthropologist

This essay explores the relationship between visions of the ideal society that emerge from social movements and local, small-scale socio-economic and cultural projects that might contribute to achieving these ideals. It discusses the concept of sumak kawsay, a term meaning “living well” in the Kichwa language, which has been used in Ecuador to refer to a holistic concept of well-being involving economic, environmental, and social factors. Sumak kawsay originally emerged in the discourse of Ecuador’s indigenous movements, and the country has incorporated the concept, along with its Spanish-language version of buen vivir, into its most recent constitution in 2008. Buen …

Boys, Books, And Boredom: A Case Of Three High School Boys And Their Encounters With Literacy, Loukia K. Sarroub, Todd Pernicek Oct 2014

Boys, Books, And Boredom: A Case Of Three High School Boys And Their Encounters With Literacy, Loukia K. Sarroub, Todd Pernicek

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

We examine the literacy gender gap through the documented experiences of three representative high schools boys and their teacher—how they view themselves as students, their dispositions toward schooling and education, and their engagement with literacy— as a way to further understand how literacy teachers can better work with them. We offer a case study analysis of the boys’ struggles with academic reading in high school reading classes aimed at addressing the needs of young people who read far below grade level in school. We highlight the multifaceted, complex nature of “struggle” or “reluctance” toward academic reading and argue that no …

The Veil, Desire, And The Gaze: Turning The Inside Out, Banu Gökarıksel, Anna Secor Oct 2014

The Veil, Desire, And The Gaze: Turning The Inside Out, Banu Gökarıksel, Anna Secor

Geography Faculty Publications

In psychoanalytically inflected scholarship, the veil is often understood to remove women from the field of the gaze. Our analysis offers a different understanding of the interplay between the veil, the gaze, and the subject by showing that the veil in fact is visible and that this visibility and its governance are part of the formation of pious, desiring subjects. The question of the gaze is especially pertinent to what we call “veiling fashion” (that is, stylish combinations of the headscarf with a range of clothing items, which variably adhere to an Islamic code of modesty). In 2009 we conducted …
