Understanding the biology of heifer maturity and its relationship to calving difficulty and subsequent breeding success is a vital step in building abioeconomic model to identify optimal production and profitability. A limited dependent variable probit model is used to quantify the responses among heifer maturities, measured by a maturity index (MI), on dystocia and second pregnancy. The MI account for heifer age, birth BW, prebreeding BW, nutrition level, and dam size and age and is found to be inversely related to dystocia occurrence. On average there is a 2.2% increase in the probability of dystocia with every 1 point drop …

Solving Jurisdiction's Social Cost, Dustin E. Buehler
Solving Jurisdiction's Social Cost, Dustin E. Buehler
Washington Law Review
Federal court subject-matter jurisdiction rules incur a significant social cost—when jurisdiction is found lacking, courts must dismiss, no matter how many years and resources the parties have spent on the case. Indeed, hundreds of belated jurisdictional dismissals occur each year after parties have already engaged in discovery, dispositive motions, or even trial. Federal judges tolerate this waste largely because they view nonwaivable jurisdictional rules as a function of structural values rooted in the Constitution, rather than efficiency concerns. In contrast, scholars tend to focus primarily on efficiency arguments while discussing jurisdictional nonwaivability, de-emphasizing important structural interests. Both theories are overly …

You Shall Not Pass: The Roma "Travel Ban," Racial Profiling In Macedonia, And Remedy Under International Law, Lauren Hartley
You Shall Not Pass: The Roma "Travel Ban," Racial Profiling In Macedonia, And Remedy Under International Law, Lauren Hartley
Dickinson Law Review (1908-2003)
The Roma people have faced centuries of discrimination and prejudice in Europe. Recent expansions of the European visa-free travel zone triggered yet another form of discrimination against Roma individuals. After Roma began making false asylum claims in the European Union, officials pressured the source nations to stem the tide of false asylum seekers. Macedonia, one of the primary source nations, responded to the pressure by developing a set of practices that arguably include racial profiling targeted primarily at Roma people.
This Comment discusses how Macedonia may be liable for claims of racial profiling under two adjudicatory bodies-the United Nations Human …

Downregulation Of Cox-2 And Cyp 4a Signaling By Isoliquiritigenin Inhibits Human Breast Cancer Metastasis Through Preventing Anoikis Resistance, Migration And Invasion, Hao Zheng, Ying Li, Yuzhong Wang, Haixia Zhao, Jing Zhang, Hongyan Chai, Tian Tang, Jiang Yue, Austin M. Guo, Jing Yang
NYMC Faculty Publications
Flavonoids exert extensive in vitro anti-invasive and in vivo anti-metastatic activities. Anoikis resistance occurs at multiple key stages of the metastatic cascade. Here, we demonstrate that isoliquiritigenin (ISL), a flavonoid from Glycyrrhiza glabra, inhibits human breast cancer metastasis by preventing anoikis resistance, migration and invasion through downregulating cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 and cytochrome P450 (CYP) 4A signaling. ISL induced anoikis in MDA-MB-231 and BT-549 human breast cancer cells as evidenced by flow cytometry and the detection of caspase cleavage. Moreover, ISL inhibited the mRNA expression of phospholipase A2, COX-2 and CYP 4A and decreased the secretion of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and 20-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic …

Vanderbilt Law Review
To be guilty of a crime, generally one must commit a bad act while in a culpable state of mind. But the language used to define, partition, and communicate the variety of culpable mental states (in Latin, mens rea) is crucially important. For depending on the mental state that juries attribute to him, a defendant can be convicted-for the very same act and the very same consequence-of different crimes, each with different sentences.
The influential Model Penal Code ("MPC") of 1962 divided culpable mental states into four now-familiar kinds: purposeful, knowing, reckless, and negligent.' Both before the MPC and since, …
Examination Of Tinnitus: Study Of Synapses On Fusiform Cells In The Dorsal Cochlear Nucleus, Stephanie Bouanak
Examination Of Tinnitus: Study Of Synapses On Fusiform Cells In The Dorsal Cochlear Nucleus, Stephanie Bouanak
Senior Honors Projects
The dorsal cochlear nucleus (DCN) is a multimodal processing station found at the junction of the auditory nerve and brainstem medulla. Tinnitus-induced neuronal hyperactivity has been observed in the DCN and, thus, suggested to be the lowest region of the auditory nerve with such hyperactivity. The main integrative units of the DCN are the fusiform cells, receiving and processing inputs from auditory sources before transmitting information to higher auditory pathways. Neural hyperactivity is induced in fusiform cells of the DCN following intense sound exposure. Researchers suggest that fusiform cells may be implicated as major generators of noise-induced tinnitus. Despite previous …

The advancement in scaled Silicon technology has accelerated the development of a wide range of applications in various fields including medical technology. It has immensely contributed to finding solutions for monitoring general health as well as alleviating intractable disorders in the form of implantable and wearable systems. This necessitates the development of energy efficient and functionally efficacious systems. This thesis has explored the algorithm-circuit co-design approach for developing an energy efficient epileptic seizure detection processor which could be used for implantable epilepsy prosthesis. Novel wavelet transform based algorithms are proposed for accurate detection of epileptic seizures. Energy efficient techniques at …

Evidence from sites in the lower Ulua valley of north-central Honduras, occupied between a.d. 500 and 1000, provides new insight into the connections between households, craft production, and the role of objects in maintaining social relations within and across households. Production of pottery vessels, figurines, and other items in a household context has been documented at several sites in the valley, including Cerro Palenque, Travesía, Campo Dos, and Campo Pineda. Differences in raw materials, in what was made, and in the size and design of firing facilities allow us to explore how crafting with clay created communities of practice made …

Global efforts are underway to develop and promote improved cookstoves which may reduce the negative health and environmental effects of burning solid fuels on health and the environment. Behavioral studies have considered cookstove user practices, needs and preferences in the design and implementation of cookstove projects; however, these studies have not examined the implications of the traditional stove use and design across multiple resource-poor settings in the implementation and promotion of improved cookstove projects that utilize a single, standardized stove design. We conducted in-depth interviews and direct observations of meal preparation and traditional, open-fire stove use of 137 women aged …

Connections Between Student Explanations And Arguments From Evidence About Plant Growth, Jenny Dauer, Jennifer H. Doherty, Allison L. Freed, Charles W. Anderson
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
We investigate how students connect explanations and arguments from evidence about plant growth and metabolism—two key practices described by the Next Generation Science Standards. This study reports analyses of interviews with 22 middle and high school students postinstruction, focusing on how their sense-making strategies led them to interpret—or misinterpret—scientific explanations and arguments from evidence. The principles of conservation of matter and energy can provide a framework for making sense of phenomena, but our results show that some students reasoned about plant growth as an action enabled by water, air, sunlight, and soil rather than a process of matter and energy …
