Therapeutic Hypothermia Following Cardiac Arrest, Cassandra Patrick Oct 2014

Therapeutic Hypothermia Following Cardiac Arrest, Cassandra Patrick

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

According to the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation (2014), each year, 424,000 people in the U.S. (more than 1,000/day) experience EMS-assessed out-of-hospital non-traumatic sudden cardiac arrest. This is roughly equivalent to the number of people who die from Alzheimers’ disease, assault with firearms, breast cancer, cervical cancer, colorectal cancer, diabetes, HIV, house fires, motor vehicle accidents, prostate cancer and suicides combined (Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation, 2014). It is estimated that the likelihood of surviving an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) to hospital discharge can be as low as 6% to 8% (Williams, Calder, Cocchi & Donnino, 2013). Additionally an estimated 200,000 hospitalized …

Ebola: Protecting Healthcare Workers, Martha Mccoy

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

Ebola is a hemorrhagic disease that has been seen throughout Liberia, but because of international travel it is spreading. Gilsdorf, Morgan and Leitmeyer (2012) researched air travel and reported that, “In 2010, 5.04 billion passengers arrived and departed from 1318 airports worldwide… and travel to and from Africa almost doubled between 1995 and 2005.” (p.1471). In the last few months there have been cases of Ebola reported in Spain and the United States linked to travel. These are recent developments because as of July, 2014 the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported “to date there are no cases …

Ebola Pandemic, Lurajean Cravens

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

Ebolavirus, or Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), is of the filovirus family causing hemorrhagic fever first discovered in the African country of Zaire in 1976 (Turner, 2014; Hampton, 2014) and has gained global concern and attention since the recent epidemic outbreak in West Africa. There are five known species of Ebola: Zaire, Sudan, Ivory Coast, Bundibugyo and Reston, based on the region of origination. The Zaire species has been identified as the strain responsible for the current outbreak in West Africa, and has spread to Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Senegal (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,2014; Gostin, Lucey & Phelan, …

Implementing The Hmong Culture Into Classrooms, Chee Vang Oct 2014

Implementing The Hmong Culture Into Classrooms, Chee Vang

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The purpose of this capstone was to raise awareness of the importance of implementing the Hmong culture into classrooms, especially due to many Hmong students’ lack of academic performance in schools. Hmong students have suffered tremendously in school due to language barriers and culture shock. The research involved interviewing a sample of Fresno County teachers and students. Fresno has the largest population of Hmong people in California. The results suggest that creating a diverse and comfortable environment for Hmong students requires incorporating their culture into classrooms by using icebreakers or teaching a whole unit about the Hmong people. This will …

Evaluating A Proposed Farm Best Management Practice: Nitrous Oxide Emissions, In-Bed Nitrate And Carbon Monitoring, And Hydraulic Retention Times Of Denitrifying Woodchip Bioreactors In Monterey County, California, Christina M. David

SNS Master's Theses

Because surface waters in agricultural regions along the Central Coast of California have relatively high nitrate concentrations, there is a lot of interest to evaluate and implement various practices to improve water quality. This study assessed hydraulic retention times (HRTs), nitrate and carbon concentration gradients, and atmospheric fluxes and dissolved concentrations of nitrous oxide in three denitrification woodchip bioreactors on Salinas Valley farms that treat nitrate at 30 mg/L NO3-N to 180 mg/L NO3-N from field runoff. To evaluate HRT, we used sodium bromide tracer tests on two of the bioreactors, DBR1 and DBR 3, the former which had double …

Partial Blockade Of Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors Improves The Counterregulatory Response To Hypoglycemia In Recurrently Hypoglycemic Rats, Edmund F. Lagamma, Necla Kirtok, Owen Chan, Bistra B. Nankova Oct 2014

Partial Blockade Of Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors Improves The Counterregulatory Response To Hypoglycemia In Recurrently Hypoglycemic Rats, Edmund F. Lagamma, Necla Kirtok, Owen Chan, Bistra B. Nankova

NYMC Faculty Publications

Recurrent exposure to hypoglycemia can impair the normal counterregulatory hormonal responses that guard against hypoglycemia, leading to hypoglycemia unawareness. This pathological condition known as hypoglycemia-associated autonomic failure (HAAF) is the main adverse consequence that prevents individuals with type 1 diabetes mellitus from attaining the long-term health benefits of tight glycemic control. The underlying molecular mechanisms responsible for the progressive loss of the epinephrine response to subsequent bouts of hypoglycemia, a hallmark sign of HAAF, are largely unknown. Normally, hypoglycemia triggers both the release and biosynthesis of epinephrine through activation of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChR) on the adrenal glands. We hypothesize …

Women In The Crowd Of Corporate Directors: Following, Walking Alone, And Meaningfully Contributing, Joan Macleod Heminway Oct 2014

Women In The Crowd Of Corporate Directors: Following, Walking Alone, And Meaningfully Contributing, Joan Macleod Heminway

Scholarly Works

With the thought that new perspectives often can be helpful in addressing long-standing unresolved questions, this article approaches an analysis of women’s roles on corporate boards of directors from the standpoint of crowd theory. Crowd theory — in reality, a group of theories — explains the behavior of people in crowds. Specifically, this article describes theories of the crowd from social psychology and applies them to the literature on female corporate directors, looking at the effects on both women as crowd members and boards as decision-making crowds.

Unfortunately, while the crowd theory perspective provides some insights, they are not altogether …

The Evolution Of Copulation Frequency And The Mechanisms Of Reproduction In Male Anolis Lizards, Michele A. Johnson, Maria Veronica Lopez, Tara K. Whittle, Bonnie K. Kircher, A K. Dill, Divina Varghese, J. Wade Oct 2014

Wade

Biology Faculty Research

The evolution of many morphological structures is associated with the behavioral context of their use, particularly for structures involved in copulation. Yet, few studies have considered evolutionary relationships among the integrated suite of structures associated with male reproduction. In this study, we examined nine species of lizards in the genus Anolis to determine whether larger copulatory morphologies and higher potential for copulatory muscle performance evolved in association with higher copulation rates. In 10–12 adult males of each species, we measured the size of the hemipenes and related muscles, the seminiferous tubules in the testes, and the renal sex segments in …

Social Media & Revolution: The Importance Of The Internet In Tunisia’S Uprising, Aamna Dhillon

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Our world has entered a digital age, where technology has made leaps and bounds and is accelerating in development. With this digital age came the widespread use of the internet and the emergence of “social media”—online platforms for communicating with others. Though the initial use of these social media platforms was to stay connected with friends and family, a sect of users have used the platforms to share news and important information. In the past few years, people have come together to demand change in their countries by protest and eventually even revolution, all of which is said to have …
