The Influence Of Social Environment And Hypercholesterolemia On Sympathetic Nervous System Innervation Of Vascular Tissue In Rabbits, Crystal M. Noller Oct 2014

The Influence Of Social Environment And Hypercholesterolemia On Sympathetic Nervous System Innervation Of Vascular Tissue In Rabbits, Crystal M. Noller

Open Access Dissertations

Behavioral and psychosocial factors have been shown to influence cardiovascular disease. While interventions targeting these risk factors demonstrate clinical improvement, mechanisms underlying these effects remain to be determined. Research has also defined a relationship between psychosocial stress and immune function, and revealed stress related increases in lymphatic sympathetic nerve density. Considering that inflammation characterizes the various stages of heart disease, the current study assessed whether social stress could influence vascular sympathetic innervation in the presence or absence of hypercholesterolemia. We found dense sympathetic innervation extending into the vascular media and intima throughout the aortic arch and thorax in diseased as …

The Relationship Between Bilingualism And Executive Functioning In Spanish- And English-Speaking Head Start Preschoolers, Lisa J. White

Open Access Theses

Executive functions (EF) are an important aspect of school readiness that have been shown to predict higher achievement in language, math, and science starting in the early years (Blair & Razza, 2007; Bull, Espy, & Wiebe, 2008; Nayfeld, Fuccillo, & Greenfield, 2013; Ponitz, McClelland, Matthews, & Morrison, 2009). Children who are bilingual have been shown to have enhanced EF skills when compared to their monolingual peers (Bialystok & Viswanathan, 2009; Carlson & Meltzoff, 2008; Poulin-Dubois, Blaye, Coutya, & Bialystok, 2011; Riggs, Shin, Unber, Spruijt-Metz, Pentz, 2013). While this association has been found among children of different ages, languages, and socioeconomic …

A Generator-Produced Gallium-68 Radiopharmaceutical For Pet Imaging Of Myocardial Perfusion, Nigam Rath, Vijay Sharma, Jothilingam Sivapackiam, Scott Harpstrite, Julie Prior, Hannah Gu, David Piwnica-Worms

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works

Lipophilic cationic technetium-99m-complexes are widely used for myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI). However, inherent uncertainties in the supply chain of molybdenum-99, the parent isotope required for manufacturing 99Mo/99mTc generators, intensifies the need for discovery of novel MPI agents incorporating alternative radionuclides. Recently, germanium/gallium (Ge/Ga) generators capable of producing high quality 68Ga, an isotope with excellent emission characteristics for clinical PET imaging, have emerged. Herein, we report a novel 68Ga-complex identified through mechanism-based cell screening that holds promise as a generator-produced radiopharmaceutical for PET MPI.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Of The Prefrontal Cortex In Awake Nonhuman Primates Evokes A Polysynaptic Neck Muscle Response That Reflects Oculomotor Activity At The Time Of Stimulation., Chao Gu, Brian D Corneil

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has emerged as an important technique in cognitive neuroscience, permitting causal inferences about the contribution of a given brain area to behavior. Despite widespread use, exactly how TMS influences neural activity throughout an interconnected network, and how such influences ultimately change behavior, remain unclear. The oculomotor system of nonhuman primates (NHPs) offers a potential animal model to bridge this gap. Here, based on results suggesting that neck muscle activity provides a sensitive indicator of oculomotor activation, we show that single pulses of TMS over the frontal eye fields (FEFs) in awake NHPs evoked rapid (within ∼25 …

At its best, a university is a collection of individuals ‐‐ students and faculty ‐‐ focused on learning and discovering new knowledge. For this goal to be realized, a critical element is having faculty members deeply engaged in such discovery within their disciplines. Scholarship, in the form of journal articles, book chapters, monographs and similar endeavors, creative activity which can take an even wider range of forms, and funded research which explores the boundaries of disciplines all contribute to such engagement. Through such participation, faculty members stay at the growing edges of their fields, and in so doing, they enrich …

Mixed Jurisdiction And The Scottish Legal Tradition: Reconsidering The Concept Of Mixture, Stephen Thomson Oct 2014

Mixed Jurisdiction And The Scottish Legal Tradition: Reconsidering The Concept Of Mixture, Stephen Thomson

Journal of Civil Law Studies

Scotland is typically regarded as a mixed jurisdiction based on an assessment of its combination of civilian and common law traditions. If this narrow definition of “mixture” is opened up, one will find several other traditions which are constituent parts of the Scottish legal tradition. Those range from the seemingly remote Celtic and udal law, through feudal and canon law, to the law of the European Union and the European Convention on Human Rights. An holistic approach to the question of mixture requires that each of these traditions is accounted for, especially because of the difficulties in assessing the legacy …

Etruscan Trade Networks: Understanding The Significance Of Imported Materials At Remote Etruscan Settlements Through Trace Element Analysis Using Non-Destructive X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry, Patrick T. Woodruff Oct 2014

Etruscan Trade Networks: Understanding The Significance Of Imported Materials At Remote Etruscan Settlements Through Trace Element Analysis Using Non-Destructive X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry, Patrick T. Woodruff

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Etruscan civilization was rich in local and interregional trade. Its exchange networks were vital in establishing relationships with other societies, importing exotic materials and goods, as well as disseminating and assimilating information. However, there is little understanding of the participation of smaller inland settlements in the act of exchange. This research answers questions pertaining to the purpose of trade within these self-sustaining communities, the reliability of identifying geographic locations of the clay used in ancient ceramics through the use of non-destructive X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry without sampling current regional clay sources, and the materiality of the ceramics being exchanged …

Design Practices Of Preservice Elementary Teachers In An Integrated Engineering And Literature Experience, Kristen Bethke Wendell Oct 2014

Design Practices Of Preservice Elementary Teachers In An Integrated Engineering And Literature Experience, Kristen Bethke Wendell

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

The incorporation of engineering practices and core ideas into the Next Generation Science Standards at the elementary school level provides exciting opportunities but also raises important questions about the preparation of new elementary teachers. Both the teacher education and engineering education communities have a limited literature base on the resources that novice elementary teachers bring to learning and teaching engineering. The purpose of this descriptive exploratory research study was to characterize the design practices used by preservice elementary teachers during an integrated engineering and literature experience. Using a modification of the Design Activity Coding Scheme (Atman et al., 2007), we …

Gender Differences In The Consistency Of Middle School Students’ Interest In Engineering And Science Careers, Marsha Ing, Pamela R. Aschbacher, Sherry M. Tsai Oct 2014

Gender Differences In The Consistency Of Middle School Students’ Interest In Engineering And Science Careers, Marsha Ing, Pamela R. Aschbacher, Sherry M. Tsai

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

This longitudinal study analyzes survey responses in seventh, eighth, and ninth grade from diverse public school students (n = 482) to explore gender differences in engineering and science career preferences. Females were far more likely to express interest in a science career (31%) than an engineering career (13%), while the reverse was true for males (58% in engineering, 39% in science). After controlling for student and school demographic characteristics, females were as consistent as males in their science career interests during the three years of the study but less consistent in their engineering career interests. Knowing an engineer significantly …

Schoenstatt’S Shrine For The Pilgrim People Of God, Ann W. Astell, Danielle M. Peters Oct 2014

Schoenstatt’S Shrine For The Pilgrim People Of God, Ann W. Astell, Danielle M. Peters

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

The authors reflect on the anthropological notion of pilgrimage of the People of God and the place of ecclesial movements therein. While many movements are associated with a pilgrimage to a particular shrine, the very birth of the Schoenstatt Movement coincides with, and depends upon, the Schoenstatt Shrine. Founded in Germany at the outbreak of World War I, on October 18, 1914, by Father Joseph Kentenich (1885–1968), the international Apostolic Movement of Schoenstatt is animated by a threefold spirituality corresponding to the three graces received through pilgrimage to Schoenstatt’s shrine. This essay argues that the structural principles of formation inherent …

The Mystical Theology Of Chiara Lubich: A Foundation For Interreligious Dialogue In East Asia, Donald W. Mitchell Oct 2014

The Mystical Theology Of Chiara Lubich: A Foundation For Interreligious Dialogue In East Asia, Donald W. Mitchell

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

This article begins with the assumption that Chiara Lubich received a charism—a spiritual gift—that is embodied in her spirituality of unity. Mitchell argues that the Trinitarian source of this gift was revealed in the mystical experience she refers to as “Paradise ’49,” a period of illumination in Chiara’s life that began in 1949 and extended to 1951. The first part of this paper reflects on the charism of Chiara’s spirituality of unity as lived out in interreligious dialogue. The second part reflects on what has been published about Chiara’s mystical illuminations, which Mitchell believes can serve as new sources for …

The Economy Of Communion: A Project For A Sustainable And Happy Socioeconomic Future, Luigino Bruni Oct 2014

The Economy Of Communion: A Project For A Sustainable And Happy Socioeconomic Future, Luigino Bruni

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

Bruni begins by presenting a picture of today’s global economic changes and the issues that must be addressed. He discusses the widening inequality and income gap, as well as the higher correlation between inequality and quality of life than between income (GDP) and quality of life. Inequality, he argues, is becoming a major obstacle to socioeconomic development. Therefore, companies need to expand their range of action to include social and community activities as opportunities for enhancing economic success and the well-being of those in the company and community. Bruni then turns to the Economy of Communion, giving its background and …

Characterization Of The Transcriptome, Nucleotide Sequence Polymorphism, And Natural Selection In The Desert Adapted Mouse Peromyscus Eremicus, Matthew D. Macmanes, Michael B. Eisen

Molecular, Cellular & Biomedical Sciences

As a direct result of intense heat and aridity, deserts are thought to be among the most harsh of environments, particularly for their mammalian inhabitants. Given that osmoregulation can be challenging for these animals, with failure resulting in death, strong selection should be observed on genes related to the maintenance of water and solute balance. One such animal, Peromyscus eremicus, is native to the desert regions of the southwest United States and may live its entire life without oral fluid intake. As a first step toward understanding the genetics that underlie this phenotype, we present a characterization of the …
