Intercellular Cooperation And Competition In Brain Cancers: Lessons From Drosophila And Human Studies, Indrayani Waghmare, Austin Roebke, Mutsuko Minata, Madhuri Kango-Singh, Ichiro Nakano

Biology Faculty Publications

Glioblastoma (GBM) is a primary brain cancer with an extremely poor prognosis. GBM tumors contain heterogeneous cellular components, including a small subpopulation of tumor cells termed glioma stem cells (GSCs). GSCs are characterized as chemotherapy- and radiotherapy-resistant cells with prominent tumorigenic ability. Studies in Drosophila cancer models demonstrated that interclonal cooperation and signaling from apoptotic clones provokes aggressive growth of neighboring tumorigenic clones, via compensatory proliferation or apoptosis induced proliferation. Mechanistically, these aggressive tumors depend on activation of Jun-N-terminal kinase (upstream of c-JUN), and Drosophila Wnt (Wg) in the apoptotic clones. Consistent with these nonmammalian studies, data from several mammalian …

Adult Neurogenesis In The Four-Striped Mice (Rhabdomys Pumilio), Olatunbosun O. Olaleye, Amadi O. Ihunwo

Brain and Mind Institute

In this study, we investigated non-captive four-striped mice (Rhabdomys pumilio) for evidence that adult neurogenesis occurs in the adult brain of animal models in natural environment. Ki-67 (a marker for cell proliferation) and doublecortin (a marker for immature neurons) immunostaining confirmed that adult neurogenesis occurs in the active sites of subventricular zone of the lateral ventricle with the migratory stream to the olfactory bulb, and the subgranular zone of the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus. No Ki-67 proliferating cells were observed in the striatum substantia nigra, amygdala, cerebral cortex or dorsal vagal complex. Doublecortin-immunoreactive cells were observed in …

Fisheries Research Articles

Zooplankton are the key trophic link between primary producers and fish in pelagic ecosystems. Historically, there are few zooplankton time series in Australia, with no data sets longer than two years prior to 2008. Here we compile 98 676 abundance records of more than 1000 zooplankton taxa from unpublished research cruises, student projects, published literature, and the recent Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS). This data set covers the entire coastal and shelf region of Australia and dates back to 1938. Most records are for copepods, but there are also data for other taxa such as decapods, chaetognaths, thaliaceans, appendicularians, and …

The Political Economy Of Ivory As A “Conflict Resource”, Natasha White Nov 2014

The Political Economy Of Ivory As A “Conflict Resource”, Natasha White

Peace and Conflict Studies

The past year has seen attention directed, both in policy discourse and the media, towards the implication of Central African non-state armed groups in poaching and ivory trafficking. Engaging with both mainstream political economy analyses and work on the “geographies of resource wars,” this paper turns to the case of ivory as a “conflict resource,” through the case study of the Lord’s Resistance Army. It begins by outlining the contextual specificities and conditions of access, before assessing the compatibility of the resource’s biophysical, spatial and material characteristics with the needs of regional armed groups and the LRA in particular. Though …

The Incentive Amplifying Effects Of Nicotine Are Reduced By Selective And Non-Selective Dopamine Antagonists In Rats, Matthew I. Palmatier, Marissa R. Kellicut, A. Brianna Sheppard, Russell W. Brown, Donita L. Robinson Nov 2014

Robinson

ETSU Faculty Works

Nicotine is a psychomotor stimulant with ‘reinforcement enhancing’ effects — the actions of nicotine in the brain increase responding for non-nicotine rewards. We hypothesized that this latter effect of nicotine depends on increased incentive properties of anticipatory cues; consistent with this hypothesis, multiple laboratories have reported that nicotine increases sign tracking, i.e. approach to a conditioned stimulus (CS), in Pavlovian conditioned-approach tasks. Incentive motivation and sign tracking are mediated by mesolimbic dopamine (DA) transmission and nicotine facilitates mesolimbic DA release. Therefore, we hypothesized that the incentive-promoting effects of nicotine would be impaired by DA antagonists. To test this hypothesis, separate …

An Ethnography Of Voice(S) In The School House: Making Sense Of Girl World, Julie Devaud Nov 2014

An Ethnography Of Voice(S) In The School House: Making Sense Of Girl World, Julie Devaud

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

The life of a gifted adolescent girl both in and out of the schoolhouse is dynamic and complicated. This qualitative study, using the methodology of narrative inquiry and multiple interviews, examines how these young women make sense of their lives as they move quickly towards the socialization of womanhood. This study specifically examines which factors lead to their academic success in the schoolhouse and personal success as happy individuals. Using grounded theory and a critical feminist perspective as my framework for analysis, I found the support of family, teachers, and peers was critical. I also discerned four distinct themes among …

Tanzania Post-Colonial Educational System And Perspectives On Secondary Science Education, Pedagogy, And Curriculum: A Qualitative Study, Eugenia Lucas Wandela Nov 2014

Tanzania Post-Colonial Educational System And Perspectives On Secondary Science Education, Pedagogy, And Curriculum: A Qualitative Study, Eugenia Lucas Wandela

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

The development of technology and innovation in any country depends on a strong investment in science education from the lower to the upper levels of education. In most of the Sub-Saharan African nations, science education curriculum and teaching still faces many issues and problems that are inhibiting the growth of technology and innovation in these nations. In order to address these issues, an interpretive qualitative study that aims to examine how Tanzanian secondary science educators perceive secondary science education was conducted in the summer of 2013. The purpose of this study is to investigate problems and educational issues that might …

The Scope Of Precedent, Randy J. Kozel Nov 2014

The Scope Of Precedent, Randy J. Kozel

Michigan Law Review

The scope of Supreme Court precedent is capacious. Justices of the Court commonly defer to sweeping rationales and elaborate doctrinal frameworks articulated by their predecessors. This practice infuses judicial precedent with the prescriptive power of enacted constitutional and statutory text. The lower federal courts follow suit, regularly abiding by the Supreme Court’s broad pronouncements. These phenomena cannot be explained by—and, indeed, oftentimes subvert—the classic distinction between binding holdings and dispensable dicta. This Article connects the scope of precedent with recurring and foundational debates about the proper ends of judicial interpretation. A precedent’s forward- looking effect should not depend on the …

Classification For Animal Vocal Fold Surgery: Resection Margins Impact Histological Outcomes Of Vocal Fold Injury, Mitsuyoshi Imaizumi, Susan L. Thibeault, Ciara Leydon

Communication Disorders Faculty Publications

Objective—Extent of vocal fold injury impacts the nature and timing of wound healing, and voice outcomes. However, depth and extent of the lesion created to study wound healing in animal models vary across studies, likely contributing to different outcomes. Our goal was to create a surgery classification system to enable comparison of postoperative outcomes across animal vocal fold wound healing studies.

Study design—Prospective, controlled animal study.

Methods—Rats underwent one of three types of unilateral vocal fold surgeries classified by depth and length of resection. The surgeries were a subepithelial injury, resection of epithelium and superficial layer of the lamina propria …

Living With A Disability: A Gateway To Practicing Forgiveness And Compassion, Susan Stuntzner, Jacquelyn Dalton Nov 2014

Living With A Disability: A Gateway To Practicing Forgiveness And Compassion, Susan Stuntzner, Jacquelyn Dalton

Counseling Faculty Publications

Forgiveness and compassion are two helpful approaches toward reducing the emotional, psychological, and spiritual anxiety brought about by negative and harmful experiences. Disability, forgiveness, and compassion are terms that may not be thought of in relation to one another, but here the authors introduce the idea that the experience of living with a disability can be an opportunity to practice forgiveness or compassion, whether directed toward one’s self or toward others. Forgiveness and compassion are similar yet unique practices that influence the emotional well-being. The experience of disability includes both the disabling life event (in the case of acquired disabilities) …

Invasion Is Contingent On Species Assemblage And Invasive Species Identity Inexperimental Rehabilitation Plots, A. Joshua Leffler, Eamonn D. Leonard, Jeremy J. James, Thomas A. Monaco

Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications

Ecological studies often suggest that diverse communities are most resistant to invasion by exotic plants, but relatively few local species may be available to a rehabilitation practitioner. We examine the ability of monocultures and diverse assemblages to resist invasion by an exotic annual grass (cheatgrass) and an exotic biennial forb (dyer’s woad) in experimental rehabilitation plots. We constructed seven assemblages that included three monocultures of grass, forb, or shrub; three four-species mixtures of grasses, forbs, or shrubs; and a three-species mixture of one species from each growth form in an experimental field setting to test resistance to invasion. Assemblages were …

Estimation Of Forest Interior Condition In Southern Appalachian Mountains Using Airborne Lidar Data, Gang Shao, Songlin Fei, Buddhika D. Madurapperuma, Guofan Shao Nov 2014

Estimation Of Forest Interior Condition In Southern Appalachian Mountains Using Airborne Lidar Data, Gang Shao, Songlin Fei, Buddhika D. Madurapperuma, Guofan Shao

Purdue GIS Day

Sustainability of forest ecosystem requires maintenance of forest cover and forest interior conditions. Sustaining forest cover supplies ecosystem goods and services and maintains biomass and carbon and nitrogen storage. Forest interior supports ecosystem functioning and provides particular physical and biological environments for plant and animal species that depend on a type of habitat isolated from non-forest land cover areas and prohibit the infestation of invasive species. Land cover maps derived from satellite imagery were broadly applied to assess spatial patterns of forest ecosystem and its dynamic. However, existing land cover maps at landscape scale are insufficient to provide information of …

Beyond Gis: The Promise Of Spatial Humanities, David J. Bodenhamer Nov 2014

Beyond Gis: The Promise Of Spatial Humanities, David J. Bodenhamer

Purdue GIS Day

Geospatial technologies such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have facilitated the (re)discovery of space for humanists. Yet until recently GIS has had only limited ability to move us beyond a map of geographical space into a richer, more evocative concepts of place based on history and memory. Over the past few years, GIScientists have made advances in spatial multi-media, in GIS-enabled web services, geo-visualization, cyber geography, and virtual reality that provide capabilities far exceeding the abilities of GIS on its own. This presentation will explore how the convergence of technologies, including but not limited to GIS, has led to the …

Raw Milk, Raw Power: States Of (Mis)Trust, Diana Mincyte Nov 2014

Raw Milk, Raw Power: States Of (Mis)Trust, Diana Mincyte

Publications and Research

In recent years, raw milk has emerged as one of the most contentious food commodities, considered a serious health risk by public health officials and a source of healing and nourishment by raw milk proponents. The purpose of this article is to explore the ways in which consumers construct and experience trust in food that is often procured in informal markets. Because the image of an overreaching, exploitative government features prominently in popular narratives surrounding raw milk consumption, this article is explicitly concerned with the role of the state in public food debates. Drawing on two complementary empirical cases of …

Analyzing The Interactions Between Xenopus Tropicalis Mc2r, Mc5r, And The Mraps: Modeling The Regulation Of Frog Interrenal Cells, Yesenia Garcia

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The role of Melanocortin 2 Receptor (MC2R) in adrenal/interrenal glucocorticoid secretion has been well documented in many organisms. Studies in mammals have shown that in the adrenal gland two melanocortin receptors and two melanocortin receptor accessory proteins are expressed: MC2R, MC5R, MRAP, and MRAP2. The MRAPs have an opposite effect on the cell surface expression of MC2R and MC5R. In mammals, MRAP aids MC2R but inhibits MC5R cell surface expression. This thesis aims to explore the functional relationship between MC2R, MC5R, MRAP, and MRAP2 in Xenopus tropicalis to determine if the MRAPs have a similar effect on amphibian MC2R and …

Blobs In Tartan Colours: Margaret Tait's Painted Eightsome, K Parker Nov 2014

Blobs In Tartan Colours: Margaret Tait's Painted Eightsome, K Parker

School of Art, Design and Architecture

This essay explores the interplay of Julia Kristeva's concepts of semiotic and symbolic in the Orcadian film-poet Margaret Tait's direct animation film Painted Eightsome, in which the music of a Scottish reel is combined with animated artwork painted frame-by-frame onto clear 35mm film. As a creative artist, Tait used a range of forms. She wrote prose and poetry, and made short films, usually shooting on 16mm with her clockwork Bolex camera. In her cinematic work she explored an array of highly experimental techniques, including painting and scratching on the film surface, from the beginning of her filmmaking career in Italy …

Saving Sharks By Nudging Change, Tan K. B. Eugene Nov 2014

Saving Sharks By Nudging Change, Tan K. B. Eugene

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

In a commentary, SMU Associate Professor of Law and an ‘I’m FINished with FINS’ campaign ambassador Eugene Tan welcomed Parliament’s passing of the Animals and Birds (Amendment) Bill. He commented that the Bill, which seeks to enhance the welfare and responsible care of animals, is important as he felt that our treatment of non-human beings, which share the same space we do, speaks equally to what we are as a society as well as our sense of well-being and responsibility to creatures unable to protect themselves. Citing the silent, unfolding phenomenon of the declining popularity of shark’s fin soup in …
