Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus) is one of the leading causes of bacterial meningitis world-wide. The classic paradigm in the establishment of bacterial meningitis is that in the absence of physical trauma, infection in the peripheral blood is needed to cause invasion of the central nervous system (CNS). Our previous studies have shown that pneumococci, a frequent colonizer of the nasopharynx, can cause bacterial meningitis through a nonhematogenous route by which bacteria appear to travel along the olfactory nerves, through the cribriform plate to the olfactory bulbs and into the rest of the CNS. However, with the frequency of nasopharyngeal colonization and …

Proteomic Analysis Of Rosenthal Fibers And The Development Of Software For Proteomics, Michael Raymond Heaven
Proteomic Analysis Of Rosenthal Fibers And The Development Of Software For Proteomics, Michael Raymond Heaven
All ETDs from UAB
The first aim of my thesis was to identify the protein composition of the protein aggregates, called Rosenthal fibers, which are the defining feature of Alexander disease (AxD). AxD is a rare neurodegenerative disease caused by mutations in the astrocyte specific protein, glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP). GFAP is a type III intermediate filament protein that is overexpressed in AxD. A guiding hypothesis of this project was that sequestration of vital cell proteins in the aggregates contributed to disease. The results of my research do not support this hypothesis, but do provide an in depth characterization of the protein composition …
Sex Differences In Ss-Adrenergic Responsiveness Of Isolated Rabbit Hearts, Gregory Hoeker
Sex Differences In Ss-Adrenergic Responsiveness Of Isolated Rabbit Hearts, Gregory Hoeker
All ETDs from UAB
Stimulation of adrenergic receptors by catecholamines is the predominant regulatory mechanism for cardiovascular performance. Many cardiovascular diseases involve changes in ß-adrenergic signaling that often lead to decreased cardiac performance, cardiac arrhythmias, and/or sudden cardiac death. This has made ß-adrenergic receptors (ß-ARs) a significant therapeutic target in cardiovascular disease. Sex differences in ß-adrenergic responsiveness have been associated with cardioprotection in females, conferring a survival benefit in female patients with heart failure (HF). The heart contains three distinct ß-ARs: ß1-, ß2-, and ß3-AR. It is not known how each ß-AR subtype contributes to the sex differences in ß-responsiveness, let alone how this …

Role Of Immunoregulatory Cytokines Il-12 And Il-23 In Skin Cancer, Tahseen H. Nasti
All ETDs from UAB
The incidence of new cases of skin cancer, which includes non-melanoma epithelial tumors and melanoma, has increased dramatically over the last few decades. Approximately 75% of all skin cancer-related deaths is due to melanoma, which is one of the most aggressive and difficult cancers to treat. The initiating events and mechanisms that influence melanoma development are not fully known, due in part to a paucity of animal models amenable to identifying new oncogenic mutations, and investigating mechanisms of immunosurveillance. Transgenic mouse models often harbor an activating mutation in a known oncogene in all somatic cells, and its widespread expression from …

Prevalence Of Malaria And Selected Arboviral Infections In Patients Presenting With Undiagnosed Febrile Illness In Rusinga Island, Kenya, Purity Ngina Kipanga
All Master’s Theses
Onset of uncomplicated malaria is characterized by fever, headache, joint pains, myalgia and lack of appetite. These non-specific signs and symptoms also present in patients with arthropod borne viral (arboviral) infections complicate differential diagnoses. The lack of diagnostics that can detect arboviral infections in Kenyan public hospitals coupled with malaria diagnostic tools incapable of detecting low Plasmodiumparasitemia, has led to diagnosis based on clinical symptoms only, favouring malaria diagnosis at the expense of arboviral infections detection.Investigations were conducted to detect Plasmodiumparasites undetected by microscopy and rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) and determine Sindbis and Bunyamwera viruses neutralizing antibodies among undiagnosed febrile ill patients …

Remembering The Concentration Camps: Aleksander Kulisiewicz And His Concerts Of Prisoners' Songs In The Federal Republic Of Germany, Barbara Ann Milewski
Music Faculty Works
This chapter considers the performances of Aleksander Kulisiewicz, a Polish political prisoner who composed and collected songs in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp. In the 1960s and 1970s, he would perform these works on stages across Europe, with frequent appearances in East and West Germany (in front of highly diverse audiences. When compared to other forms of musical commemoration at the time, his appearances uniquely operate somewhere in between performance and historical witnessing by building on his authentic experience and profound belief in remembrance. While Kulisiewicz’s activity evolved out of his personal Holocaust experience, musicians and composers of subsequent generations also …

Why Are We Doing This? The Role Of Personal Relevance In Developing Biological Information Literacy Using Cyber Peer-Led Team Learning, Jeffrey D Radloff, C Maybee, Maribeth Slebodnik, Nancy Pelaez
IMPACT Symposium
Student-centered learning necessitates that students engage with an array of materials to develop their own understandings, often requiring students to find and critically engage with biological information. This project describes a course (BIOL 131; Biology II: Development, Structure and Function of Organisms) that utilizes cyber Peer-led Team Learning (cPLTL) as a student-centered approach to enhance students’ biological information literacy. Emphasizing the social aspects of learning, students work together in small groups led by a peer mentor using online meeting software. Scaffolded across the first half of the semester, students were given information literacy focused questions as part of a weekly …

The Worldwide Diffusion Of Football: Temporal And Spatial Perspectives, John S. Hill, John Vincent, Matthew Curtner-Smith
Global Sport Business Journal
The purpose of this study is to evaluate how football evolved from a village activity in rural England to become the world’s premier sport played in 208 countries. First, its diffusion in England is evaluated over time as well as how it spread spatially across the nation. Second, soccer’s diffusion worldwide is analyzed both temporally and geographically to assess the rate at which the sport spread and how its adoption moved from nation to nation across the major regions of the world. Principal findings were that 40 years was the time taken for soccer to take root nationally and regionally; …

The Suppression Of Hooliganism And The Rise Of The English Premier League, Clarie Etter
Honors Program Theses and Research Projects
The history of English football is intertwined with the history of violence among fans. This violence has evolved as the game, and cultures have changed. This violence is better known as hooliganism. Modern hooliganism is commonly recognized as having its beginnings in the 1960's and became particularly violent and common place in the 1980's. This violence caused many injuries, property damage, and even death in what came to be known as the English disease. After over a decade of this violence marring the game, hooliganism began to be taken more seriously by the European football leagues, authorities, and all those …

Four New Mouse Spider Species (Araneae, Mygalomorphae, Actinopodidae, Missulena) From Western Australia, Laura T. Miglio, Danilo Harms, Volker W. Framenau, Mark S. Harvey
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Four new species of the Mouse Spider genus Missulena Walckenaer, 1805 (family Actinopodidae) are described from Western Australia based on morphological features of adult males. Missulena leniae sp. n. (from the Carnarvon and Yalgoo biogeographic regions), Missulena mainae sp. n. (Carnarvon), Missulena melissae sp. n. (Pilbara) and Missulena pinguipes sp. n. (Mallee) represent a broad spectrum of morphological diversity found in this genus and differ from other congeners by details of the male copulatory bulb, colour patterns, eye sizes, leg morphology and leg spination. Two of the species, M. pinguipes sp. n. and M. mainae sp. n., are characterised by …
Development And Utilization Of Multiplex Pcr - High Resolution Melting (Hrm) Assay For Detection Of Arboviral Pathogens, Martin Mbaya Koome
Development And Utilization Of Multiplex Pcr - High Resolution Melting (Hrm) Assay For Detection Of Arboviral Pathogens, Martin Mbaya Koome
All Master’s Theses
Arthropod borne viruses (arboviruses) are transmitted by blood sucking arthropods. Disease outbreaks caused by arboviruses are sporadic and unpredictable. Arboviral disease outbreaks in Kenya have confirmed the presence of a number of arboviral diseases within the human and animal populace. Currently, there are no approved or specific therapies for arboviral infections; treatment is limited to palliative care. Early detection and vector control are important strategies in control of arboviruses. However, there is not yet a single detection system that is capable of detecting all arboviruses simultaneously. The development of realtime thermocyclers capable of high resolution melting (HRM) analysis has enabled …
Effect Of Controphic Species On Natural Population Dynamics Of Malaria Mosquito Larvae On Rusinga Island, Caroline Mirieri Kwamboka
Effect Of Controphic Species On Natural Population Dynamics Of Malaria Mosquito Larvae On Rusinga Island, Caroline Mirieri Kwamboka
All Master’s Theses
Controphic species are organisms that share the same trophic levels within an ecosystem.Ecological theory and empirical research show that controphic species affect mosquito larval populations through predation or competition. The goal of this study was to identify controphic species that may serve as potential biological control agents for malaria mosquito larvae. A baseline survey of the abundance and diversity of malaria mosquito larvae (target species) and assemblages of their controphic species in breeding sites present on Rusinga Island was conducted. The effects of physicochemical factors on mosquito larval dynamics were also evaluated. The Renyi, Inverse Simpson and Shannon diversity indices …

The Prevalence Of Trypanosoma Congolense Savannah In Shimba Hills, Kenya And Development Of A Genotyping Protocol, Julianne Mendi Muthinja
All Master’s Theses
Eleven species/subspecies belonging to the genus Trypanosoma, cause African Animal Trypanosomiasis (AAT) with Trypanosoma vivax and Trypanosoma congolense being the predominant pathogens. Annually, AAT leads to losses worth 4.5 billion dollars to livestock dependent economies in Sub-Saharan Africa. In order to manage the disease, trypanocidal drugs have been in use. However, parasites resistant to these trypanocides have emerged making the treatment of AAT difficult. Parasite resistance to trypanocides is one among the few variable phenotypes whose genetic basis is poorly understood. There is need to create a link between the genetic component, environmental component and phenotypic manifestation of the parasite. …

Occurrence Of Aflatoxin Contamination On Maize In The Lower Eastern Kenya And Evaluation Of Superabsorbent Polymers In Its Management, Livine O. Nyakundi
All Master’s Theses
Food and feed safety has been a major concern in most countries in the recent times as more knowledge is being generated on the occurrence of natural toxins in foodstuffs and edible plant species. Among the natural toxins, aflatoxins have been given more attention due to their hazardous effects to animals and human beings. A study was conducted on aflatoxin contamination in maize samples collected from lower eastern counties in Kenya. The maize samples were collected through a survey that was conducted in Kitui, Machakos and Makueni counties where aflatoxin contaminations has been a perennial problem. The samples were cultured …
Performance And Behaviour Of The Leafhopper (Maiestas Banda; Homoptera: Cicadellidae) Vector Of The Napier Stunt Disease On Napier Grass (Pennisetum Purpureum), Mabel Chigora
All Master’s Theses
Napier grass remains an important strategic grass species in east African mixed crop-livestock systems. However, production of several varieties of the grass remains constrained by phytoplasmic disease, Napier stunt disease (NSD), which is transmitted by the leafhopper, Maiestas banda. For smallholder farmers of western Kenya who rely on the grass for livestock feed and pest control in push-pull farming systems, effective control strategies of the disease and the vector remain elusive. With a view to understanding potential host plant resistance mechanisms against the leafhopper, I investigated growth, development and behaviour of the leafhopper on a variety of host plants: Pearl …

As ACA implementation proceeds, expansion states should mind the gap — the gap between Medicaid and Marketplace. In this transition between insurance platforms, people can stumble. As a bridge between expanded Medicaid and the insurance Marketplaces, the ACA allows states to enact a Basic Health Program (BHP) supported by federal funds. The BHP option, which has been delayed until 2015, aims to reduce insurance costs and increase care continuity for low-income individuals and families. Interested states face a complicated calculus, one with significant unknowns and moving parts. In this article, I first place this new insurance affordability program in the …

China’S Apologetic Justice: Lessons For The United States?, Xuan-Thao Nguyen

Many scholars have criticized Congressional apology resolutions for slavery as inadequate and ineffective. Ironically, Congress may look to China’s apologetic justice in intentional intellectual property infringements to learn valuable lessons about apologies and how to incorporate them into righting wrongs. China requires that the wrongdoer who intentionally harms or infringes the intellectual property rights of another make a public apology in a newspaper or trade journal, in addition to stopping the harm and paying for compensatory damages and costs. If the wrongdoer does not timely make the public apology, the infringed party will draft and publish the public apology in …
