Manifest Complexity: A Foundational Ethic For Astrobiology?, Kelly C. Smith

Publications

This paper examines the age old question of the basis of moral value in the new context of astrobiology, which offers a fresh perspective. The goal is to offer the broad outline of a general theory of moral value that can accommodate the diversity of living entities we are likely to encounter beyond the confines of Earth. It begins with ratiocentrism, the view that the possession of reason is the primary means by which we differentiate entities having moral value in and of themselves from those having moral value merely by virtue of the uses to which they can be …

Despite the recent progress in the broad‐scaled analysis of proteins in body fluids, there is still a lack in protein profiling approaches for biomarkers of rare diseases. Scarcity of samples is the main obstacle hindering attempts to apply discovery driven protein profiling in rare diseases. We addressed this challenge by combining samples collected within the BIO‐NMD consortium from four geographically dispersed clinical sites to identify protein markers associated with muscular dystrophy using an antibody bead array platform with 384 antibodies. Based on concordance in statistical significance and confirmatory results obtained from analysis of both serum and plasma, we identified eleven …

The Phenology Of Ticks And The Effects Of Long-Term Prescribed Burning On Tick Population Dynamics In Southwestern Georgia And Northwestern Florida, Elizabeth R. Gleim, L. Mike Conner, Roy D. Berghaus, Michael L. Levin, Galina E. Zemtsova, Michael J. Yabsley Nov 2014

Yabsley

Environmental Studies / Environmental Science Faculty Scholarship

Some tick populations have increased dramatically in the past several decades leading to an increase in the incidence and emergence of tick-borne diseases. Management strategies that can effectively reduce tick populations while better understanding regional tick phenology is needed. One promising management strategy is prescribed burning. However, the efficacy of prescribed burning as a mechanism for tick control is unclear because past studies have provided conflicting data, likely due to a failure of some studies to simulate operational management scenarios and/or account for other predictors of tick abundance. Therefore, our study was conducted to increase knowledge of tick population dynamics …

The Impact Of An Eu–Us Transatlantic Trade And Investment Partnership Agreement On Biofuel And Feedstock Markets, John C. Beghin, Jean-Christophe Bureau, Alexandre Gohin Nov 2014

The Impact Of An Eu–Us Transatlantic Trade And Investment Partnership Agreement On Biofuel And Feedstock Markets, John C. Beghin, Jean-Christophe Bureau, Alexandre Gohin

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

We assess the impact of a potential TTIP bilateral free trade agreement on the EU and US bio-economies (feedstock, biofuels, by-products, and related competing crops) and major trade partners in these markets. The analysis develops a multi-market model that incorporates bilateral trade flows (US to EU, EU to US, and similarly with third countries) and is calibrated to OECD-FAO baseline for 2013–2022 to account for recent policy decisions. The major policy reforms from a TTIP involve tariff and TRQ liberalization and their direct contractionary impact on US sugar supply, EU biofuel production, and indirect negative effect on US HFCS production. …

Music, Personhood, And Eudaimonia: Implications For Educative And Ethical Music Education, David J. Elliott, Marissa Silverman

John J. Cali School of Music Scholarship and Creative Works

This paper proposes that educative and ethical music making and teaching, which is based on a praxial philosophy of music education (Elliott and Silverman, 2014), can be carried out in a variety of ways that create places and spaces, in schools and community settings, for a variety of human values or "goods" that include, but go beyond, making and listening to classical instrumental music, or any other kind of music, for "the music itself." One premise of this philosophical discussion is that music does not have one value; music has numerous values, depending on the ways in which it is …

Calmodulin Enhances Ribbon Replenishment And Shapes Filtering Of Synaptic Transmission By Cone Photoreceptors., Matthew J. Van Hook, Caitlyn M. Parmelee, Minghui Chen, Karlene M. Cork, Carina Curto, Wallace B. Thoreson

Journal Articles: Pharmacology & Experimental Neuroscience

At the first synapse in the vertebrate visual pathway, light-evoked changes in photoreceptor membrane potential alter the rate of glutamate release onto second-order retinal neurons. This process depends on the synaptic ribbon, a specialized structure found at various sensory synapses, to provide a supply of primed vesicles for release. Calcium (Ca(2+)) accelerates the replenishment of vesicles at cone ribbon synapses, but the mechanisms underlying this acceleration and its functional implications for vision are unknown. We studied vesicle replenishment using paired whole-cell recordings of cones and postsynaptic neurons in tiger salamander retinas and found that it involves two kinetic mechanisms, the …

A growth experiment was conducted on juvenile red sea bream, Pagrus major to investigate the effect of the inclusion in fish diets, of tuna meat by-product hydrolysate which was processed through enzymatic hydrolysis using a commercially available enzyme, derived from Bacillus subtilis. Six experimental diets were formulated in the experiment. Three diets contained 50, 150 and 250 g/kg of TPM-H (tuna meat by-product hydrolysate), and two diets with the unprocessed TPM (tuna meat by-product) at an inclusion level of 50 and 250 g/kg. A control diet was formulated without any addition of the test ingredients. Treatment diets were fed ad …

There And Back, Now And Then: Iirira’S Retroactivity And The Normalization Of Judicial Review In Immigration Law, Austen Ishii

Fordham Law Review

The U.S. Supreme Court has a long tradition of treating immigration law as “exceptional,” deferring to Congress and executive agencies when determining the scope of various immigration laws. The Court’s refusal to subject immigration statutes to the ordinary level of judicial review has left immigrants even more susceptible to the effects of anti-immigrant legislation.

When the Court decided Fernandez-Vargas v. Gonzales in 2006 it increased the scope of the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 (IIRIRA) by allowing portions of the statute to be applied to immigrants who had reentered the United States prior to its effective …

The Effects Of An Extended Power Plant Shutdown On The Florida Manatee (Trichechus Manatus Latirostris) In Port Everglades, Florida, Christopher Grissett Nov 2014

The Effects Of An Extended Power Plant Shutdown On The Florida Manatee (Trichechus Manatus Latirostris) In Port Everglades, Florida, Christopher Grissett

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Florida manatees (Trichechus manatus latirostris) seek out warmer waters during winter months when ambient water temperatures drop below 20 degrees Celsius. Over time, manatees have discovered artificial warm water sites from power plant discharges in addition to natural sites such as springs and passive thermal refugia (PTRs). The Florida Power and Light (FPL) Port Everglades power plant in Broward County is one such artificial warm water refuge used by manatees. This plant was shutdown on July 16, 2013, and is expected to remain off line for at least three years during demolition and construction of a new facility. …

Habitat And Seasonal Distribution Of The North American River Otter (Lontra Canadensis) And Vertebrate Species Assemblages In Two Protected Areas Of The Florida Everglades, Catherine Faye Hamilton Nov 2014

Habitat And Seasonal Distribution Of The North American River Otter (Lontra Canadensis) And Vertebrate Species Assemblages In Two Protected Areas Of The Florida Everglades, Catherine Faye Hamilton

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

The Florida Everglades ecosystem is threatened by human development, increased pollution, freshwater scarcity, and invasive species; factors that have negatively impacted the Everglades and native species health and populations. Man-made canals and levies have redirected the natural flow of fresh water from Lake Okeechobee into the Florida Everglades, starving central and south Florida ecosystems of necessary fresh water and nutrients. Through the efforts of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Project (CERP), freshwater is being redirected back into central and south Florida, returning the sheet flow of water back into the Everglades. Monitoring species abundance in the Everglades is a beneficial conservational …

Profits V. Purpose: Hybrid Companies And The Charitable Dollar, Rachel Culley, Jill R. Horwitz Nov 2014

Profits V. Purpose: Hybrid Companies And The Charitable Dollar, Rachel Culley, Jill R. Horwitz

Law & Economics Working Papers

Social entrepreneurship -- a catch-all term meaning harnessing business practices for social good -- has attracted people who want to “do well while doing good” for decades. Advocates of the idea have succeeded in blurring the boundaries among legal ownership types and inspired nonprofit/for-profit joint ventures, public-private partnerships, and the widespread privatization of traditional government functions and activities. The most recent manifestation of this trend is the creation of hybrid non-profit/for-profit firms. In the United States, the Low-Profit Limited Liability Company (L3C) is growing, and there are similar firms in the United Kingdom and Canada. In this paper we address …

John Evans Study Report

"Universities are dedicated to the discovery and dissemination of knowledge. They are conservators of humanity's past. They cherish their own pasts, honoring forbears with statues and portraits and in the names of buildings. To study or teach at a [university] is to be a member of a community that exists across time, a participant in a procession that began centuries ago and that will continue long after we are gone. If an institution professing these principles cannot squarely face its own history, it is hard to imagine how any other institution, let alone our nation, might do so."

Indigenous European Justice And Other Indigenous Justices, Biko Agozino Nov 2014

Indigenous European Justice And Other Indigenous Justices, Biko Agozino

African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies

All human beings are indigenous because everyone originates somewhere and is therefore indigenous there. However, the imperialist reason of Europe refuses to be confined geographically, making global claims to universalism in its knowledge-power axes even while remaining peculiar, especially from the points of view of the rest of us who wonder where to place the emphasis in Eurocentric criminal justice systems. This papyrus will remind us of the old African saying that no palm is big enough to hide the sky and so even the good qualities of European empires of law would never be enough to meet the needs …

Traditional Ecological Knowledge: A Model For Modern Fire Management?, Gail Wells Nov 2014

Traditional Ecological Knowledge: A Model For Modern Fire Management?, Gail Wells

Joint Fire Science Program Digests

For many thousands of years, aboriginal peoples worldwide used fire to manage landscapes. In North America, the frequency and extent of fire (both human caused and natural) were much reduced after European colonization. Fire exclusion became the policy in the United States for most of the 20th century as the country became more settled and industrialized. Past fire exclusion has helped produce landscapes that are highly susceptible to uncharacteristically severe wildfire. An urgent challenge for land managers today is to reduce fire risk through several means, including prescribed burning, without harm to culturally significant resources or human communities. The Joint …

A House Divided: When State And Lower Federal Courts Disagree On Federal Constitutional Rights, Wayne A. Logan Nov 2014

A House Divided: When State And Lower Federal Courts Disagree On Federal Constitutional Rights, Wayne A. Logan

Scholarly Publications

Despite their many differences, Americans have long been bound by a shared sense of federal constitutional commonality. As this article demonstrates, however, federal constitutional rights do in fact often differ — even within individual states — as a result of state and lower federal court concurrent authority to interpret the Constitution and the lack of any requirement that they defer to one another’s positions. The article provides the first in-depth examination of intra-state, state-federal court conflicts on federal constitutional law and the problems that they create. Focusing on criminal procedure doctrine in particular, with its unique impact on individual liberty …

Mineral And Protein Blocks And Tubs For Beef Cattle, Jeff Lehmkuhler, Roy Burris, Donna M. Amaral-Phillips Nov 2014

Mineral And Protein Blocks And Tubs For Beef Cattle, Jeff Lehmkuhler, Roy Burris, Donna M. Amaral-Phillips

Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications

Nutritional supplement blocks and tubs are convenient for beef producers, require no investment in feeding troughs and require a limited area for storing. One of the most attractive features is that they lower the labor needed to supplement livestock. Many producers use these products to provide supplemental nutrients to cattle consuming low-quality forages or as a mechanism to promote a more consistent intake of minerals. These products are also attractive to producers who have off-farm employment as they eliminate the need for daily feeding. Yet, they often come at a greater cost per unit of nutrient than more conventional feedstuffs. …

Restoration Of Bison (Bison Bison) To Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, A Feasibility Study, Daniel S. Licht

United States National Park Service: Publications

Executive Summary

Agate Fossil Beds National Monument is a 3,057-acre park located in western Nebraska. The unit is comprised of northern mixed-grass prairie vegetation, typical of the Northern Great Plains. Weather, fire, and grazing are generally considered to be the ecological drivers of prairie ecosystems and critical for prairie health. However, grazing has essentially been absent since the 1960s. In 2014, a Department of the Interior report explicitly listed the park as a high priority for bison restoration. This report evaluates the feasibility, management options, benefits, and challenges of restoring bison to Agate Fossil Beds National Monument.

A potential bison …

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

OBJECTIVE:

Chronic neurological deficits are a significant complication of preterm birth. Magnesium supplementation has been suggested to have neuroprotective function in the developing brain. Our objective was to determine whether higher neonatal serum magnesium levels were associated with better long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes in very-low birth weight infants.

STUDY DESIGN:

A retrospective cohort of 75 preterm infants (<1500 g, gestational age <27 weeks) had follow-up for the outcomes of abnormal motor exam and for epilepsy. Average total serum magnesium level in the neonate during the period of prematurity was the main independent variable assessed, tested using a Wilcoxon rank-sum test.

RESULTS:

Higher average serum magnesium level was associated with a statistically significant decreased risk for abnormal motor exam (p = 0.037). A lower risk for epilepsy in the group with higher magnesium level did not reach statistical significance (p = 0.06).

CONCLUSION:

This …

Effects Of Spreadsheet Towards Learners’ Usage Of Mathematical Language, C. Kok Fui, S.N.A. Syed Zamri

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Language has been an essential element in mathematics education as it is a tool used between individuals to convey the information of mathematical concepts. Some researchers discovered that inconducive language usage impedes mathematics learning. This papers reports on the effect of spreadsheet to the language used by a group of 32 pre-university students in defining “limits”. The data revealed that (i) spreadsheet changes learners’ commandment of language in three aspects which are usage of examples, types of expressions, and accuracy of terminology; (ii) spreadsheet does change learner’ choice expression while learning mathematics regardless their academic ability; and (iii) through spreadsheet …

Incorporating Higher Learning Skills Into Bioethics Education Of Multicultural Students Of Science In Malaysia, S.N. Mohd Nor, M.S. Mohamed, M.A.F. Sivaraman, S.H. Yan

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

An overview of bioethics courses offered to pure science undergraduates from the University of Malaya is presented. Students come from three ethnic groups affiliated with three major religions with diverse values and belief systems. It was therefore important to incorporate a bioethics curriculum where the youths could identify with and relate to their intrinsic beliefs and moral discernment. For example, the concept of non-violence is an important ethical rule for the Hindus and Buddhists affecting their stand related to embryonic stem cell research. Likewise the concept of charity in Islam and Christianity would be important virtues to consider in regards …
