Structural Mechanisms Of Glucan Phosphatase Activity In Starch Metabolism, David A. Meekins
Structural Mechanisms Of Glucan Phosphatase Activity In Starch Metabolism, David A. Meekins
Theses and Dissertations--Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry
Starch is a water-insoluble glucose biopolymer used as an energy cache in plants and is synthesized and degraded in a diurnal cycle. Reversible phosphorylation of starch granules regulates the solubility and, consequentially, the bioavailability of starch glucans to degradative enzymes. Glucan phosphatases release phosphate from starch glucans and their activity is essential to the proper diurnal metabolism of starch. Previously, the structural basis of glucan phosphatase activity was entirely unknown. The work in this dissertation outlines the structural mechanism of activity of two plant glucan phosphatases called Starch EXcess4 (SEX4) and Like Sex Four2 (LSF2). The crystal structures of SEX4 …

Spillover Across Remedies, Michael Coenen
Spillover Across Remedies, Michael Coenen
Journal Articles
Remedies influence rights, and rights apply across remedies. Combined together, these two phenomena produce the problem of spillover across remedies. The spillover problem occurs when considerations specific to one remedy affect the definition of a substantive rule that governs in other remedial settings. For example, the severe remedial consequences of suppressing incriminating evidence might generate substantive Fourth Amendment precedents that make other Fourth Amendment remedies (such as damage awards, injunctions, or ex ante denials of search warrants) more difficult to obtain. Or, the rule of lenity might yield a narrowed reading of a statutory rule in a criminal case, which …
Learning To Read (Gender): Children’S Animation And The New Heterosexism, Kaelyn Flowerday
Learning To Read (Gender): Children’S Animation And The New Heterosexism, Kaelyn Flowerday
Anthós
This paper examines and compares two American animated productions targeting elementary and middle school children, and in doing so aims to elucidate the handling of gender in similar television programs and feature films of the past three decades. These animated works are treated here as a Foucauldian apparatus, one predicated on the force of systematically structured observation, which functions to manipulate power relations in the favor of hetero- and cis-male order. The Disney feature Beauty and the Beast supplies a case for investigating the heterosexist discourses of these contemporary animated media. However, as will be shown, comparatively feminist animated works …
The Sovereign Wolf: Feudal Tension And Noble Animal Changes In William Of Palerne, Charis Woodward
The Sovereign Wolf: Feudal Tension And Noble Animal Changes In William Of Palerne, Charis Woodward
Anthós
Translated into Middle English from the twelfth century octosyllabic French Guillaume de Palerne, William of Palerne was commissioned by Sir Humphrey IX de Bohun, and composed by poet William, whom we know little about (Bunt, ll. 166). The problem with reading William of Palerne lies not within the constructed alliterative long lines, but in knowing howto read it. The intended audience for the translation of William of Palernehas been a topic of debate since the early nineteenth century. William writes his poem "in ese of Englysch men in Englysch speche" as stated in his introduction (ll. 168). …

Veblen’S Vested Interest And Power, Bryan Gordon
Veblen’S Vested Interest And Power, Bryan Gordon
Anthós
With this inquiry I shall seek to establish that Thorstein Veblen advanced theories which related the vested interests with power. To accomplish this I shall first dissect the meanings behind Veblen’s definitions of "the vested interest", "intangible assets" and "free income." I then, using the previous analysis relate the state to vested interests and solidify their collective unity. After this connection I proceed onto analyzing the implications of the vested interest and how it relates to the common man. Power, normally analyzed within the context of political science is rarely spoken of within economics, this analysis strives to bring the …
The Epic Struggle For Dolphin-Safe Tuna, Lauren Sullivan
The Epic Struggle For Dolphin-Safe Tuna, Lauren Sullivan
Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law
In May 2012, the World Trade Organization (WTO) struck down the United States' dolphin-safe tuna labeling standard as a barrier to trade that is prohibited by the Technical Barriers to Trade Agreement (TBT). The analysis in the US-Tuna II report questions the validity of standardized eco-labels enforced by WTO Member States, which are an increasingly popular means to achieve environmental and consumer protection. This Note considers the merits of state-backed eco-labeling schemes, the implications of the US-Tuna II report for the WTO's approach to nontrade interests, and potential accommodations within the current WTO framework for eco-labels. It ultimately suggests that …
Anarchy, Order, And Trade: A Structuralist Account Of Why A Global Commercial Legal Order Is Emerging, Bryan H. Druzin
Anarchy, Order, And Trade: A Structuralist Account Of Why A Global Commercial Legal Order Is Emerging, Bryan H. Druzin
Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law
While still fragmented, the world is witnessing the emergence of a global commercial legal order independent of any one national legal system. This process is unfolding both on the macrolevel of state actors as well as on the microlevel of private individuals and organizations. On the macrolevel, the sources of this legal order are complex international agreements; on the microlevel, private contracts employing commercial customary practices and arbitration are driving this process forward. Yet there is no comparable evolution occurring (in any substantial sense) in noncommercial areas of law such as criminal, tort, or family law. There is an overall …

A Method For Non-Invasive, Automated Behavior Classification In Mice, Using Piezoelectric Pressure Sensors, Steven R. Gooch
A Method For Non-Invasive, Automated Behavior Classification In Mice, Using Piezoelectric Pressure Sensors, Steven R. Gooch
Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering
While all mammals sleep, the functions and implications of sleep are not well understood, and are a strong area of investigation in the research community. Mice are utilized in many sleep studies, with electroencephalography (EEG) signals widely used for data acquisition and analysis. However, since EEG electrodes must be surgically implanted in the mice, the method is high cost and time intensive. This work presents an extension of a previously researched high throughput, low cost, non-invasive method for mouse behavior detection and classification. A novel hierarchical classifier is presented that classifies behavior states including NREM and REM sleep, as well …
Business, Human Rights, And The Promise Of Polycentricity, Jamie D. Prenkert, Scott J. Shackelford
Business, Human Rights, And The Promise Of Polycentricity, Jamie D. Prenkert, Scott J. Shackelford
Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law
Special Representative of the Secretary-General on the Issue of Human Rights and Transnational Corporations and Other Business Enterprises (SRSG) John Ruggie referred to the "Protect, Respect, and Remedy" Framework (PRR Framework) and the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (Guiding Principles) as a polycentric governance system. However, the exact meaning of this phrase has not been very carefully elucidated. This Article analyzes that description in the context of the deep and varied body of literature on polycentric governance and evaluates the PRR Framework in that light. In particular, this Article uses a case-study approach, analyzing the emerging polycentric …
The Development Of A Performance Progression For Science Teachers' Implementation Of Model-Based Teaching, Christopher Bogiages
The Development Of A Performance Progression For Science Teachers' Implementation Of Model-Based Teaching, Christopher Bogiages
Theses and Dissertations
The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) call for science teachers to implement pedagogical strategies that can approximate authentic scientific practices. One such strategy, Model-Based Teaching, engages students in learning the disciplinary core ideas of science through the process of developing and using Scientific Models. Model-Based Teaching is a difficult pedagogical strategy for teachers to learn and implement. Factors such as Knowledge of Scientific Models and Modeling (KSM), understanding of the Nature of Science (NOS), and use of questioning to facilitate whole class discussions play important roles in the development of teachers' ability to implement Model-Based Teaching. This study employed a …

Biodiversity in the tropics is especially diverse and describing species found in the tropics is important. Opiliones species richness is higher in the tropics than the temperate zone, with diversity highest in low latitudes. This study aims to catalog the Opiliones community in Cusuco National Park, Honduras, while estimating species richness and describing their abundance, distribution and community structure. Fifty hours of sampling at 6 sites yielded 18 morphospecies and 264 individual Opiliones were collected. This study added one new described species to the Opiliones fauna of Honduras, and fourteen morphospecies may represent new species. An estimated 43 to 112 …

In this thesis, 2D CFD simulations, 3D CFD simulations, and one 2D Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) problem were investigated using combined CFD and an FEA (Finite Element Analysis) tool. Discussions focused on turbulence models, mesh sizes, prism layer sizes, under-relaxation-factor, etc. The solution of CFD simulation and FSI simulation was validated using the results of previous CFD solvers and experimental data presented in the literature. The SST model results for the 2D mixing layer, 2D airfoil near-weak, axisymmetric subsonic jet, and 2D convex curvature boundary layer studies agree with previous CFD results within a 1% error. The k-e model with wall …
Phylogenetics, Population Genetics, And Evolution Of The Mallard Complex, Philip Lavretsky
Phylogenetics, Population Genetics, And Evolution Of The Mallard Complex, Philip Lavretsky
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Speciation is primarily regarded as an ancestral split that results in two distinct taxonomic units, and proceeds in stages along a continuum from initiation (i.e., population divergence) to completion (i.e., reproductively isolated species). Establishing how and why populations diverge, including the primary mechanisms influencing these events is a major objective for evolutionary scientists. Focusing on incipient forms, researchers attempt to disentangle the antagonistic nature of selection, genetic drift, and gene flow in the speciation process.
In chapter 1, I investigate the phylogenetic relationships of 14 closely related taxa within the mallard complex (Anas spp.) that underwent a radiation within the …

Defining Suffering : African American Young Men And Conduct Disorder, Sascha D. Atkins-Loria
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This paper will discuss the disproportionate overrepresentation of African American young men among those diagnosed with Conduct Disorder. Existing research attributes this disproportionality to a variety of factors but does not incorporate historical or social analysis. This project will endeavor to consider how the historical and enduring stereotype of black men as "criminal" impacts this diagnosing pattern, and explores alternate ways to define and treat behavioral symptomology among young black men. This paper will discuss how stereotypes as well as the fear of being stereotyped impact both client and clinician and affect their interaction, thereby influencing psychological assessment and diagnosis. …
Clinician Perspectives On The Human-Animal Bond And Its Impact On Levels Of Compassion And Prosocial Behavior, Pear M. Wilson
Clinician Perspectives On The Human-Animal Bond And Its Impact On Levels Of Compassion And Prosocial Behavior, Pear M. Wilson
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
Animal-assisted therapy is an increasingly popular mode of therapeutic treatment, supported by a body of research that has grown significantly in the past decade. Thirteen seasoned clinicians utilizing the human-animal bond (HAB) were interviewed about the HAB's impact on clients at the internal level of experienced compassion and the corresponding external level of pro-social behavior. Major finding were that clinicians overwhelmingly endorsed the HAB as an effective intervention in increasing client capacity for compassionate mindfulness and engagement with others in a more satisfying and pro-social way. Participants strongly recommended that the field of social work be more inclusive of animal-assisted …

This study explored the clinicians' perceptions of AAT as it is practiced in the field today, their examples of novel and/or unexpected benefits, and their thoughts on the future of the field. This study utilized interviews of nine animal assisted therapists, who had higher education in the areas of social work, psychiatry, or psychology, as well as at least six months of experience practicing AAT. The findings showed AAT was found to be a useful …
Protective Factors For African American Suicide : A Theoretical Intersection Of Social Integration And Religious Coping, Shaunna T. Evans
Protective Factors For African American Suicide : A Theoretical Intersection Of Social Integration And Religious Coping, Shaunna T. Evans
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This theoretical investigation discusses how religion and spirituality protects African Americans from committing suicide. Because of the seemingly low rates within the community, suicide has not been afforded the attention it deserves in research. In addition, existing literature attributes this protection to religious and spiritual behaviors but often resorts to global indices (e.g., church attendance and prayer) as determinants. What is lacking in current research is an explanation of how African Americans use their faith to discourage suicidal behavior. Due to a steady increase in Black male suicides, it is imperative that those in academia and clinicians alike begin to …
Coordinate Systems In Gã, Kurt Erbach
Coordinate Systems In Gã, Kurt Erbach
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
This thesis presents a comprehensive description and analysis of Gã coordinate systems. Gã is spoken primarily in Accra, the capital of Ghana, and no previous research on Gã has addressed the specific type of locative language described as coordinate systems (Lewis, Simmons, & Fennig, 2013). The current study is based on a corpus of Gã locative descriptions collected through interview-style elicitation sessions with a Gã speaker. Analysis of this corpus has revealed coordinate system morphemes ŋwɛ͂ı͂ ‘up’, shĩshĩ ‘down’, hı͂ɛ͂ ‘front’, sɛ̀ɛ̀ ‘back’, nı͂nè-jwurɔ͂ ‘right’, and àbɛ̀kú ‘left’. In describing the use of these morphemes I use Levinson’s (2003) framework …

Litigation Discovery And Corporate Governance: The Missing Story About The "Genius Of American Corporate Law", Érica Gorga, Michael Halberstam
Emory Law Journal
Strikingly absent from the entire corporate governance and corporate litigation debate is a unique feature of American civil procedure that deserves special attention: the modern civil discovery regime. This Article attempts to fill this gap. We argue that modern discovery, first established by the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure in 1938, has had a profound impact on the evolution of shareholder litigation, corporate governance, and the culture of corporate disclosure in the United States.
