An Analysis Of Nontechnical Game Theory On Laboratory Sales Trainees In Saudi Arabia, Akram Abdul Cader
An Analysis Of Nontechnical Game Theory On Laboratory Sales Trainees In Saudi Arabia, Akram Abdul Cader
International Journal of Applied Management and Technology
The purpose of this case study was to analyze 6 months of training application in a nontechnical game theory setting. Three laboratory sales trainees were studied using training reports that logged their strategic decisions and the amount of sales they obtained from their clients. A pure strategy game theory analysis was conducted on the decisions by the sales trainees. Two types of strategies were derived from the study: (a) allocentric and (b) egocentric. The egocentric strategies yielded higher personal payoffs, while the allocentric strategies yielded higher organizational payoffs. Training intervention was withheld during the 6-month period in order to allow …

Vision is perhaps the most important of all our senses, and gives us an immense amount of information regarding the outside world. The initial format in which this information reaches the retina are photons; particles of energy radiation of a given wavelength emitted or reflected from our surroundings. The brain itself however, perceives information in electrical signals via action potentials and changes in electrochemical gradients. The processes involved in the transduction of photons into electrical potentials will be the focus of this article. This review article summarizes the recent advances in understanding these complex pathways and provides an overview of …
Need: Stories, Megan Ellis
Need: Stories, Megan Ellis
HIM 1990-2015
The intent of this thesis is to create a literary fiction collection centered on diverse adolescent girls. In recent years, women writers have moved away from the domestic sphere of authors whose writing focused solely on the daily lives of women, and have begun penning epic stories and novels whose themes were previously tackled by men alone. Authors show that the craft of expansive and immersive literary fiction transcends gender, allowing women more freedom with the types of stories they choose to write. That's not to say that domestic fiction is unimportant or "less than" other types of literary fiction, …
Arrangement Of Google Search Results And Imperial Ideology: Searching For Benghazi, Libya, Jacob Stewart
Arrangement Of Google Search Results And Imperial Ideology: Searching For Benghazi, Libya, Jacob Stewart
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This project responds to an ongoing discussion in scholarship that identifies and analyzes the ideological functions of computer interfaces. In 1994, Cynthia Selfe and Richard Selfe claimed that interfaces are maps of cultural information and are therefore ideological (485). For Selfe and Selfe and other scholars, these interfaces carried a colonial ideology that resulted in Western dominance over other cultures. Since this early scholarship, our perspectives on interface have shifted with changing technology; interfaces can no longer be treated as having persistent and predictable characteristics like texts. I argue that interfaces are interactions among dynamic information that is constantly being …

Let Me Tell You About Homestuck: The Online Production Of Place, Jennifer Short
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates the potential for the online production of place, specifically as it applies to the host site for the Homestuck web comic, MS Paint Adventures, and its attendant fandom. The proliferation of digital environments such as video games, web sites, and chat rooms has led to numerous opportunities for the study of online spaces and the numerous practices that take place within them. The lack of physical location in online spaces can, however, make it difficult to conceptualize of a web site as real, a problem that has often led researchers to develop new theories of space that …
Charter Values: The Uncanny Valley Of Canadian Constitutionalism, Matthew Horner
Charter Values: The Uncanny Valley Of Canadian Constitutionalism, Matthew Horner
The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference
“Charter values” is a term used with increasing frequency in the decisions of the Supreme Court of Canada. But what does the Court mean by “Charter values”? is a Charter value different than a Charter right? This paper examines the functional role that the Court has assigned to Charter values, as well as their substantive meaning. Ultimately, the author concludes that “Charter values” is an amorphous and ill-defined creation that undermines the important role of direct Charter rights analysis while creating ambiguity and undue complexity for courts, tribunals and other statutory decision-makers. The concept and language of Charter values should …

Proving A Violation: Rhetoric, Research And Remedy, Alan N. Young
The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference
This paper explores the uses and abuses of relying upon legislative fact evidence to prove a violation of a claimant’s constitutional rights. The Supreme Court of Canada has stated that, in the criminal law context, an accused is entitled to challenge a law that violates the constitutional rights of third parties but that applies in a constitutionally sound manner with respect to the accused. This principle spawned the conventional wisdom that in order to obtain a declaration that a statute is invalid, a litigant must present voluminous legislative fact evidence to demonstrate that the statute unjustifiably limits rights of third …

An Exploration Of "Non-Economic" Damages In Civil Jury Awards, Herbert M. Kritzer, Guangya Liu, Neil Vidmar
Articles
Using three primary data sources plus three supplemental sources discussed in an appendix, this paper examines how well non-economic damages could be predicted by economic damages and at how the ratio of non-economic damages to economic damages changed as the magnitude of the economic damages awarded by juries increased. We found a mixture of consistent and inconsistent patterns across our various datasets. One fairly consistent pattern was the tendency for the ratio of non-economic to economic damages to decline as the amount of economic damages increased. Moreover, the variability of the ratio also tended to decline as the amount of …

The Effects Of Food Safety Standards On Trade And Welfare: The Case Of Eu Shrimp Imports, Xiaoqian Li
The Effects Of Food Safety Standards On Trade And Welfare: The Case Of Eu Shrimp Imports, Xiaoqian Li
Theses and Dissertations--Agricultural Economics
This research explores the link between a gravity model and welfare frameworks and then applies the quantitative model system to analyze how trade and welfare is affected by the Minimum Required Performance Limits (MRPL) in the shrimp importing market of European Union.
The quantitative model system consists of two parts: first, this study uses the “phi-ness” gravity model to investigate the trade effects of MRPL on EU shrimp market. The “phi-ness” gravity model partitions the standard variables to avoid biased estimation caused by the correlation between time and country fixed effects and policy variables. The Poisson Pseudo Maximum Likelihood (PPML) …

Investigation Of Cardiac Electrophysiology In Human Ventricular Tissue, Kathleen Brownson
Theses and Dissertations--Biomedical Engineering
Individuals with cardiomyopathy are at higher risk to die from sudden cardiac arrest than those with non-failing (NF) hearts. This study examined the differences in electrical properties of failing and NF human hearts in terms of cardiac memory through explicit control of diastolic intervals in a sinusoidal fashion, restitution of action potential duration (APD) through standard and dynamic pacing protocols, maximum rate of depolarization and APD alternans. Recordings of transmembrane potentials were made in tissues extracted from patients with heart failure and one donor NF heart. Computational simulations were performed using the O’Hara Rudy model for generating surrogates of control …

Influence Of Natural Zeolite On Nitrogen Dynamics In Soil, Stanislav Torma, Jozef Vilcek, Peter Adamisin, Emilia Huttmanova, Ondrej Hronec
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Sorption of the cations NH_4^+, Al^{3+}, Fe^{2+}, Mn^{2+}, and Mg^{2+} in powdered zeolite and its mixture with soil was monitored. More than 90% of the observed cations were fixed in the zeolite in the first few minutes of the laboratory experiment, which is a very fast speed of sorption, and the ammonia cations reacted fastest. Consequently, the dynamics of the nitrate and ammoniac nitrogen in soil after application of zeolite in different amounts was monitored. A decreased ammonium content was apparent in the variants with zeolite 1 month after zeolite application in comparison with variants without zeolite owing to the …

The Role Of The Infralimbic Cortex In A Pain Intensity-Graded Rodent Model Of Distraction Analgesia, Christopher T. Mcnabb
Psychology Dissertations - Archive
The misdirection of attention has been used to reduce experimental and clinical pain- a technique known as distraction analgesia (DA). A growing understanding of the important interrelationship between cognition and pain has prompted the need for a deeper understanding of its neural substrates. There is evidence implicating the infralimbic cortex of the rat brain as a putative mediator of DA, but this has never been directly tested. Therefore, this study investigated the role of the infralimbic cortex (IL) in a rat model of DA at high- and low-intensity pain. One hundred fifty two Sprague Dawley rats underwent stereotaxic surgery to …

Psychology Dissertations - Archive
Nociceptive stimuli can activate peripheral nociceptors to produce nociceptive signals which can be projected to the spinal cord and further up to the thalamus and many other cortical and subcortical areas through ascending pathways. Nociceptive information can be processed in various brain areas (e.g., somatosensory cortex and anterior cingulate cortex); it can change activities in those brain areas and eventually result in morphological changes following long-term stimulation. The medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) has been proven to be involved in higher cognitive functions and emotional processing. It receives projections from brain areas that are involved in nociception. Morphological changes of the …

Sea stars inhabiting the Northeast Pacific Coast have recently experienced an extensive outbreak of wasting disease, leading to their degradation and disappearance from many coastal areas. In this paper, we present evidence that the cause of the disease is transmissible from disease-affected animals to apparently healthy individuals, that the disease-causing agent is a virus-sized microorganism, and that the best candidate viral taxon, the sea star-associated densovirus (SSaDV), is in greater abundance in diseased than in healthy sea stars.

Apicomplexa are obligate intracellular parasites that cause important diseases in humans and animals. Manipulating the pathogen genome is the most direct way to understand the functions of specific genes in parasite development and pathogenesis. In Toxoplasma gondii, nonhomologous recombination is typically highly favored over homologous recombination, a process required for precise gene targeting. Several approaches, including the use of targeting vectors that feature large flanks to drive site-specific recombination, have been developed to overcome this problem. We have generated a new large-insert repository of T. gondii genomic DNA that is arrayed and sequenced and covers 95% of all of the …

The large-conductance Ca2+-activated K+ (BK) channel is broadly expressed in various mammalian cells and tissues such as neurons, skeletal and smooth muscles, exocrine cells, and sensory cells of the inner ear. Previous studies suggest that BK channels are promiscuous binders involved in a multitude of protein-protein interactions. To gain a better understanding of the potential mechanisms underlying BK interactions, we analyzed the abundance, distribution, and potential mechanisms of intrinsic disorder in 27 BK channel variants from mouse cochlea, 104 previously reported BK-associated proteins (BKAPS) from cytoplasmic and membrane/cytoskeletal regions, plus BK β- and γ-subunits. Disorder was evaluated using the MFDp …

Tonic–clonic seizures typify central nervous system oxygen toxicity (CNS-OT) in humans and animals exposed to high levels of oxygen, as are encountered during scuba diving. We previously demonstrated that high doses of pseudoephedrine (PSE) decrease the latency to seizure (LS) for CNS-OT in young male rats. This study investigated whether female rats respond similarly to PSE and hyperbaric oxygen (HBO). We implanted 60 virgin stock (VS) and 54 former breeder (FB) female rats with radio-telemetry devices that measured brain electrical activity. One week later, rats were gavaged with saline or PSE in saline (40, 80, 120, 160, or 320 mg/kg) …
Could Animal Production Become A Profession?, David Fraser
Could Animal Production Become A Profession?, David Fraser
General – Farm Animal Issues
In the industrialized countries, the intensification of animal production has been widely perceived as a shift from agrarian to industrial production, and the public concerns and policy responses that resulted have closely paralleled the much earlier responses to the Industrial Revolution. During the Industrial Revolution, various concerns arose over the welfare of workers in factories, and the main policy response was a program of legislated controls on factory environments and hours of work. Intensive animal production led to similar concerns over the welfare of animals, and a major policy response has involved standards and regulations for the animals’ physical environment …

Questions: How do recent patterns of drought-induced woody plant mortality in Texas semi-arid savanna compare to the extended drought of the 1950s? Does the relative composition of the woody plant community shift ubiquitously across the landscape following woody plant mortality and dieback or are shifts dependent on differences among species, soils, land use and plant demography?
Location: Texas Agrilife Research Station, Sonora, Texas, USA (30.1° N 100.3° W).
Methods: Following an exceptional drought from 1951 to 1957, a study was conducted to quantify rates of mortality for various woody plant species. In 2011, we repeated this study within three long-term …

Utah's Fine Particulate Air Pollution Problem, Arnold W. Reitze Jr.
Utah OnLaw: The Utah Law Review Online Supplement
For those living along Utah’s Wasatch Front, the air quality problem is visibly obvious. The air pollution, especially in the winter when inversions trap pollutants between the surrounding mountains, is hazardous to people’s health. Several counties along the Wasatch Front violate the Clean Air Act’s air quality standard for particulate matter and are currently designated as “nonattainment” areas. The Environmental Protection Agency requires that affected areas take action to reduce the levels of pollution. This Article will discuss the Clean Air Act and the state’s role in ensuring compliance. This Article then examines some of the reasons for the Wasatch …

The PBCV-1/Chlorella variabilis NC64A system is a model for studies on interactions between viruses and algae. Here we present the first global analyses of algal host transcripts during the early stages of infection, prior to virus replication. During the course of the experiment stretching over 1 hour, about a third of the host genes displayed significant changes in normalized mRNA abundance that either increased or decreased compared to uninfected levels. The population of genes with significant transcriptional changes gradually increased until stabilizing at 40 minutes post infection. Functional categories including cytoplasmic ribosomal proteins, jasmonic acid biosynthesis and anaphase promoting …

Fig mosaic virus (FMV) is a multipartite negative-sense RNA virus infecting fig trees worldwide. FMV is transmitted by vegetative propagation and grafting of plant materials, and by the eriophyid mite Aceria ficus. In this work, the genetic variation and evolutionary mechanisms shaping FMV populations were characterized. Nucleotide sequences from four genomic regions (each within the genomic RNAs 1, 2, 3, and 4) from FMV isolates from different countries were determined and analyzed. FMV genetic variation was low, as is seen for many other plant viruses. Phylogenetic analysis showed some geographically distant FMV isolates which clustered together, suggesting long-distance migration. …

Turnip Crinkle Virus Coat Protein Inhibits The Basal Immune Response To Virus Invasion In Arabidopsis By Binding To The Nac Transcription Factor Tip, Teresa Donze, Feng Qu, Paul Twigg, T. Jack Morris
Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications
Turnip crinkle virus (TCV) has been shown to interact with a NAC transcription factor, TIP, of Arabidopsis thaliana, via its coat protein (CP). This interaction correlates with the resistance response manifested in TCV-resistant Arabidopsis ecotype Di-17. We report that failure of a mutated CP to interact with TIP triggered the corresponding TCV mutant (R6A) to cause more severe symptoms in the TCV-susceptible ecotype Col-0. We hypothesized that TCV regulates antiviral basal immunity through TIP-CP interaction. Consistent with this hypothesis, we found that the rate of accumulation of R6A was measurably slower than wild-type TCV over the course of an …
The Law Of Native American Hunting, Fishing And Gathering Outside Of Reservation Boundaries In The United States And Canada, Guy Charlton
The Law Of Native American Hunting, Fishing And Gathering Outside Of Reservation Boundaries In The United States And Canada, Guy Charlton
Canada-United States Law Journal
This article examines and compares the law of Native American/Aboriginal hunting, fishing and gathering rights in those areas which are located outside of reserved land area in Canada and the United States. The article argues that despite the differing statutory and constitutional traditions, both states' law and policy towards the Native American continues to reflect the underlying premises of the colonial project. While indigenous peoples have significant use rights, national, state and provincial power remains the primary locus of regulatory authority.
