Book Of Mormon Minimalists And The Nhm Inscriptions: A Response To Dan Vogel, Neal Rappleye, Stephen O. Smoot Jan 2014

Book Of Mormon Minimalists And The Nhm Inscriptions: A Response To Dan Vogel, Neal Rappleye, Stephen O. Smoot

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Biblical “minimalists” have sought to undermine or deemphasize the significance of the Tel Dan inscription attesting to the existence of the “house of David.” Similarly, those who might be called Book of Mormon “minimalists” such as Dan Vogel have marshaled evidence to try to make the nhm inscriptions from south Arabia, corresponding to the Book of Mormon Nahom, seem as irrelevant as possible. We show why the nhm inscriptions still stand as impressive evidence for the historicity of the Book of Mormon

Understanding Nephi With The Help Of Noah Webster, Loren Blake Spendlove Jan 2014

Understanding Nephi With The Help Of Noah Webster, Loren Blake Spendlove

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Dictionaries, especially Noah Webster’s 1828 American Dictionary of the English Language, can be useful and informative resources to help us better understand the language of the Book of Mormon. This article compares definitions of words and phrases found in the book of 1 Nephi, using Webster’s 1828 dictionary and the New Oxford American Dictionary as references. By comparing these two dictionaries, we can see how word usage and meanings have changed since the original publication of the Book of Mormon in 1830. We can also gain a greater appreciation of the text of the Book of Mormon in a way …

“War Of Words And Tumult Of Opinions”: The Battle For Joseph Smith’S Words In Book Of Mormon Geography, Neal Rappleye

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Review of John L. Lund. Joseph Smith and the Geography of the Book of Mormon. The Communications Company, 2012. 209 pp. + xviii, including index.

In the midst of this war of words and tumult of opinions, I often said to myself: What is to be done? Who of all these parties are right; or, are they all wrong together? If any one of them be right, which is it, and how shall I know it? –Joseph Smith Jr.1

Axes Mundi: Ritual Complexes In Mesoamerica And The Book Of Mormon, Mark Alan Wright Jan 2014

Axes Mundi: Ritual Complexes In Mesoamerica And The Book Of Mormon, Mark Alan Wright

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Places are made sacred through manifestations of the divine or ritual activity. The occurrence of a theophany or hierophany or the performance of particular rituals can conceptually transform a place into an axis mundi, or the center of the world. A variety of such axes mundi are known from the archaeological record of Mesoamerica and the text of the Book of Mormon. I compare and contrast several distinctive types of such ritual complexes from Mesoamerica and the Book of Mormon and argue that they served functionally and ideologically similar purposes.

Review Of Hyperuricemia As New Marker For Metabolic Syndrome, Laura Billiet, Sarah Doaty, James D. Katz, Manuel T. Velasquez Jan 2014

Review Of Hyperuricemia As New Marker For Metabolic Syndrome, Laura Billiet, Sarah Doaty, James D. Katz, Manuel T. Velasquez

Global Health Faculty Publications

Hyperuricemia has long been established as the major etiologic factor in gout. In recent years, a large body of evidence has accumulated that suggests that hyperuricemia may play a role in the development and pathogenesis of a number of metabolic, hemodynamic, and systemic pathologic diseases, including metabolic syndrome, hypertension, stroke, and atherosclerosis. A number of epidemiologic studies have linked hyperuricemia with each of these disorders. In some studies, therapies that lower uric acid may prevent or improve certain components of the metabolic syndrome. There is an association between uric acid and the development of systemic lupus erythematosus; the connection between …

Differences Between The Early Stages Of The Unemployment Rates: The Great Recession Vs. The Great Depression, Lall Ramrattan, Michael Szenberg Jan 2014

Differences Between The Early Stages Of The Unemployment Rates: The Great Recession Vs. The Great Depression, Lall Ramrattan, Michael Szenberg

Lander College of Arts and Sciences Publications and Research

We test for differences between the Great Recession and the Great Depression in the US, using unemployment rates. The test used is ANOVA. The hypothesis advanced is that the early phases of the recession and depression are non-different. At first we reject the hypothesis. But by incorporating government involvement for the two periods, we obtain moderate arguments for the acceptance of the hypothesis. The paper starts out with background ideas of the two periods, then proceeds to the testing based on actual data, deviation of actual from normal or NAIRU rates, and adjusted data for government capital injection and subsidies.

People Of The Apokalis’: Spatial Disability And The Bhopal Disaster, Jina B. Kim Jan 2014

People Of The Apokalis’: Spatial Disability And The Bhopal Disaster, Jina B. Kim

English Language and Literature: Faculty Publications

This paper considers Indra Sinha's Animal's People (2007), a fictional re-telling of the Union Carbide Bhopal disaster, as a productive site of mutual engagement between postcolonial studies and disability studies, two fields rarely in dialogue. Dominant models of disability, I argue, do not translate to formerly colonial sites and/or sites that bear the burden of global capitalism. The uneven processes of globalization—which produce disabling environments—necessitate that we revise established conceptions of disability, which are derived largely from US/UK contexts. I explore a socio-spatial model that emphasizes the necessity of specific locational axes in figurations of disability. This enables more flexible …

Exploring Hegemonic Perspectives Of Midwestern Yard-Spaces Through Art Education, Nan Waterstreet Jan 2014

Exploring Hegemonic Perspectives Of Midwestern Yard-Spaces Through Art Education, Nan Waterstreet

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This study investigated yard-spaces as artistic sites that are created and maintained through design processes involving aesthetic choices. The field of art education has grown to consider everyday objects and places worthy of exploration as important signifiers of cultural views, values, and expectations. Yard-spaces, as everyday places, are often taken for granted, and aesthetic choices that conform to social norms often have detrimental effects on the environment. This study investigated conformist and non-conformist aesthetic choices, the environmental effects of these choices, and the influences affecting design and maintenance choices for yard-space appearances.||A gap in knowledge was discovered for recognizing socially …

Observations On History, Law, And The Rise Of The New Jim Crow In State-Level Immigration Law And Policy For Latinos, Tom I. Romero Jan 2014

Observations On History, Law, And The Rise Of The New Jim Crow In State-Level Immigration Law And Policy For Latinos, Tom I. Romero

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

This essay works to connect the history of local enforcement of immigration law and policy against Mexican migrants and Mexican American citizens and its relationship to the creation and perpetuation of what Michelle Alexander has described as a redesigned caste system in the United States. As state and local government authorities then and now sought to define and respond to a “Mexican menace” as the failed enforcement of federal immigration law, such law and policy challenged not only Congress’s seemingly settled plenary power to determine who had license and permission to be in the United States but also who had …

Primary Microrna Processing Assay Reconstituted Using Recombinant Drosha And Dgcr8., Ian Barr, Feng Guo Jan 2014

Primary Microrna Processing Assay Reconstituted Using Recombinant Drosha And Dgcr8., Ian Barr, Feng Guo

Natural Sciences and Mathematics | Faculty Scholarship

In animals, the Microprocessor complex cleaves primary transcripts of microRNAs (pri-miRNAs) to produce precursor microRNAs in the nucleus. The core components of Microprocessor include the Drosha ribonuclease and its RNA-binding partner protein DiGeorge critical region 8 (DGCR8). DGCR8 has been shown to tightly bind an Fe(III) heme cofactor, which activates its pri-miRNA processing activity. Here we describe how to reconstitute pri-miRNA processing using recombinant human Drosha and DGCR8 proteins. In particular, we present the procedures for expressing and purifying DGCR8 as an Fe(III) heme-bound dimer, the most active form of this protein, and for estimating its heme content.

Influence Of Popular Television Programming On Students’ Perception About Course Selection, Major, And Career, Kristy Tucciarone Jan 2014

Influence Of Popular Television Programming On Students’ Perception About Course Selection, Major, And Career, Kristy Tucciarone

Faculty Scholarship

This study explores the ways in which television programming influences undergraduate students’ perceptions of careers in advertising and related fields. Drawing on cultivation theory, the research examines how repeated exposure to television portrayals of professional life can shape expectations and decision-making about college majors and career paths. The analysis focuses on two series—Mad Men and Trust Me—which depict advertising professionals in contrasting but influential ways.

Using a focus group methodology, the study engaged undergraduate students enrolled in advertising and communication-related courses. Participants were asked to discuss their viewing experiences, perceptions of advertising careers as presented on television, and …

Loud: Critical Practice Of Film, Sounds, And Environmental Conservation, Liat Krongrad Jan 2014

Loud: Critical Practice Of Film, Sounds, And Environmental Conservation, Liat Krongrad

Theses & ETDs

This paper places my short, fictional, character-driven, thesis film Loud in environmental and cultural context. Loud observes the ways in which information and industry technologies such as cars, trains, refrigerators, radios, televisions, computers, and cell phones transform subjectivity. The nonlinear meta-narrative, the images, the sounds, and the editing techniques are all infused with metaphor and symbolism. Loud communicates environmental issues in a visceral, profoundly emotional manner. This paper discusses the environmental issues at hand -- whale strikes and noise pollution. Then, it goes on to discuss several filmmakers and musicians who have inspired the content and techniques used for the …

The Brazilian Invasion Of Florida: Review Of The Brazilian Peppertree (Schinus Terebinthifolius Raddi) Based Allelopathy In Florida Ecosystems With Suggested Experiments To Determine Presence And Soil Activity, Thomas Luehl Jan 2014

The Brazilian Invasion Of Florida: Review Of The Brazilian Peppertree (Schinus Terebinthifolius Raddi) Based Allelopathy In Florida Ecosystems With Suggested Experiments To Determine Presence And Soil Activity, Thomas Luehl

Theses & ETDs

Brazilian pepper is an invader of Central and South Florida that is displacing native animal and plant species. Theories of how Brazilian pepper has adapted to the Florida ecosystem and dominates the new environment vary between those based on environmental factors or plant factors. This research reviews the theory that allelopathic chemicals produced by Brazilian pepper are introduced into the soil to inhibit native and other invasive species. It was determined that this could be proven via observations gained through laboratory and field experimentation, based on EPA guidelines. This review concludes that there is adequate evidence to support claims that …

Make It Or Break It: A Foray Into The Eating Habits Of Autotomized Stone Crabs Menippe Mercenaria (Say 1818), Hannah Schotman Jan 2014

Make It Or Break It: A Foray Into The Eating Habits Of Autotomized Stone Crabs Menippe Mercenaria (Say 1818), Hannah Schotman

Theses & ETDs

Numerous fisheries around the world suffer from overfishing, and finding more sustainable fishing techniques has become a major focus of marine researchers. In the United States, most fisheries require that the entire organism be harvested, however, the stone crab fishery takes advantage of the natural ability of the crabs to autotomize and regenerate their limbs by only removing the claws (chelipeds) of the crab, thus returning the live crab back into the fishery. The bulk of the fishery is located in Florida, where two species and their hybrids are harvested and marketed as stone crabs, Menippe mercenaria and M. adina. …

Whose Food?: A Multi-Sited Ethnographic Analysis Of Sarasota Farmers Markets, Charles Gillig Jan 2014

Whose Food?: A Multi-Sited Ethnographic Analysis Of Sarasota Farmers Markets, Charles Gillig

Theses & ETDs

As food markets have grown increasingly globalized and entrenched within the neoliberal, capitalist system of the 21st century, the production, sale and consumption of locally grown food has presented itself as a viable alternative to what many view as the depravity of modern industrial agriculture. Farmers markets traditionally represent the intersection of the local agricultural system with consumers interested in supporting various aspects of locally grown food, though this classical vision is not always the norm today. Through participant observation and interviews with managers, organizers, farmers, non-farmer vendors, and customers, this thesis analyzes two farmers markets of differing size and …

Gazing Upon The Goo-Goo Land: Constructions Of The Filipino Identity In U.S. Newspapers, 1898–1904, Shane Donglasan

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines the relationship between print culture and American imperial endeavors in the Philippines. Specifically, it investigates articles in daily newspapers – the saliency of the American newspaper created a way for the public to encounter the Filipino native through representations formed by colonial actors and observers. The thesis’ individual chapters explore three distinct contexts in which discourses of an emerging imperial-racial framework were translated into the narratives of reportage. The degree to which the medium of the newspaper can replicate ideas, sounds and images created a shared experience and produced widespread stereotypes. Ultimately, these accounts surveyed shaped American …

A Mathematical Model Relating Soil Organic Matter Decomposition To Microbial Community Dynamics, Vanessa Chastain Jan 2014

A Mathematical Model Relating Soil Organic Matter Decomposition To Microbial Community Dynamics, Vanessa Chastain

Theses & ETDs

Soil organic matter (SOM) decomposition releases the nutrients and minerals stored long-term in soil, so they can be consumed by a variety of soil biota via direct assimilation or trophic interactions. It is involved in both carbon and nitrogen cycling and also has relevance to climate change research due to its effect on net CO2 respired and N2O emitted via denitrication. K strategist microbes only con- sume SOM-derived substrate and are primarily responsible for SOM decomposition, so their population dynamics influence and are affected by SOM decomposition rates. On the other hand, r strategist microbes take advantage of soluble substrate …

The Social Construction Of The Electric Car: An Environmental Perspective, Tyler Scott Neumann Jan 2014

The Social Construction Of The Electric Car: An Environmental Perspective, Tyler Scott Neumann

Theses & ETDs

This thesis uses a Social Construction of Technology (SCOT) approach to build a multidirectional model of the development of the electric car. This analysis produces a constructivist theory for the development of the electric car today. There are many environmental themes present throughout this thesis, and a critical analysis of the environmental impacts of electric cars. The product of this analysis is the identification of all the perceived issues, relative to individual social groups, with the electric car, and provides solutions to those problems. The challenge of this paper, and of the SCOT framework, is to relate the solutions provided …

Conflict, Difference, And Abjection In Post-9/11 Fiction And Television Examining Terrorists, Denneillia Nugent Jan 2014

Conflict, Difference, And Abjection In Post-9/11 Fiction And Television Examining Terrorists, Denneillia Nugent

Theses & ETDs

This thesis applies Julia Kristeva's theory of abjection to historical and fictional terrorists in post-9/11 American literature and television. The abject, according to her, is the horror one feels when confronted by anything that threatens the boundaries between self and other. The thesis explores the environmental and psychological conflicts and “othering” these individuals face before turning to terrorism, as well as why terrorism simultaneously fascinates and repulses the general public. The first chapter examines the psychology of Mohamed Atta in Jarett Kobek’s novel ATTA (2011), Don DeLillo’s novel Falling Man (2007), and Martin Amis’s short story “The Last Days of …

“So Long And Thanks For All The Fish”: Human Interactions With A Begging Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops Truncatus) And Effects Of Educational Efforts, Madelaine Verbeek Jan 2014

“So Long And Thanks For All The Fish”: Human Interactions With A Begging Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops Truncatus) And Effects Of Educational Efforts, Madelaine Verbeek

Theses & ETDs

Human-animal interaction (HI) is defined as any interaction humans and animals have with each other, ranging from cooperation to direct conflict. Although HI is a frequent occurrence, the categories these interactions are divided into range within the scientific community, making comparisons between studies difficult due to inconsistent definitions and approaches among researchers. The “interactor” category, the individual who engages in the interaction, is readily missed during the evaluation process, however knowing the perspective from which the interaction took place is critical to understanding the interaction as a whole. For potentially harmful HI situations, understanding the interactor’s perspective along with the …

Socialization And Regulation: Caregiver Characteristics And Preschoolers’ Expectations In Negative Emotion-Eliciting Situations, Allison Gornik Jan 2014

Socialization And Regulation: Caregiver Characteristics And Preschoolers’ Expectations In Negative Emotion-Eliciting Situations, Allison Gornik

Theses & ETDs

While previous literature has examined relations between how parents treat children’s emotions and children’s outcomes, the manner in which these emotional socialization characteristics are internalized and then verbalized by children has not been studied. To this end, this study examined how the main caregivers (mother, father, head teacher, assistant teacher) in preschoolers’ lives treated emotions, and then how, in turn, children believed they would respond to emotional situations with those caregivers. Children from a local daycare were read vignettes and asked questions about their coping strategies and their expectations following their emotional expression. Each child’s caregivers completed questionnaires on their …

Performance Dialogues: Conversations In Poetry And Dance, Rebekah Moriah Bray Jan 2014

Performance Dialogues: Conversations In Poetry And Dance, Rebekah Moriah Bray

Theses & ETDs

This thesis was concerned with the problem of identifying a relationship between poetry and dance as performance arts. The first chapter explored historical developments among the arts of poetry, music, and dance to suggest that these areas, though distinct, are also harmonious. The second chapter of this thesis was an exercise in interdisciplinary experimentation through the conception and production of a poetry and dance performance. The final chapter of this thesis argues for the recognition of poetry and dance as languages in dialogue with their audiences. Through the process of researching and writing this thesis I discovered evidence to support …

Computer Simulations Of The Microcanonical Superspin Model Using The Demon Algorithm, Sarah Dietz Jan 2014

Computer Simulations Of The Microcanonical Superspin Model Using The Demon Algorithm, Sarah Dietz

Theses & ETDs

The decorated Ising model is a modifcation of the Ising model that allows for non- Ising intermittent spins to be inserted into a lattice of Ising spins at uniform intervals. Like the Ising chain, the decorated Ising chain is exactly solvable, which allows for novel modeling possibilities. This thesis introduces the superspin model, a decorated chain with single-spin decorations, and a Java-based computer simulation that demonstrates the properties of this model. The simulation models a microcanonical superspin system using the demon algorithm. The program models spin systems by producing color-coded animated graphics and statistical information at the end of each …
