Questioning The Comma In Verse 13 Of The Word Of Wisdom, A. Jane Birch Jan 2014

Questioning The Comma In Verse 13 Of The Word Of Wisdom, A. Jane Birch

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

The 1921 edition of the Doctrine and Covenants included an additional comma, which was inserted after the word “used” in D&C 89:13: “And it is pleasing unto me that they should not be used, only in times of winter, or of cold, or famine.” Later authors have speculated that the addition of the comma was a mistake that fundamentally changed the meaning of the verse. This article examines this “errant comma theory” and demonstrates why this particular interpretation of D&C 89:13 is without merit.

Of Broomsticks, The "Moderns;' And Self-Expression, Nathalie Zimpfer Jan 2014

Of Broomsticks, The "Moderns;' And Self-Expression, Nathalie Zimpfer

Religion in the Age of Enlightenment

Broomsticks have a history of making their way into Jonathan Swift's works. One might recall that such is the object of Peter's theologico-interpretive rantings in A Tale of a Tub, in which "after some pause the Brother so often mentioned for his Erudition, who was very skill'd in Criticisms, had found in a certain Author, which he said should be nameless, that the same Word which in the Will is called Fringe, does also signify Broom-stick." More conspicuously, said object is also at the heart of A Meditation upon a Broomstick, an amusing opuscule whose full title, A …

Concerning The Mysteries Of The Egyptians, J. V. B. M. V. St.

Religion in the Age of Enlightenment

I t is a tragedy for the investigating intellect to have both its own resilience and the power to lift itself to something higher chained when it attempts to track the progress of human knowledge in the annals of the world, the shaping of the intellect, and the refinement of morals. The scholar is fettered in his desire to collect data, which contributed to the enlightenment of nations and which, so to speak, fermented the human mind so that it was able to lift itself up into higher regions and throw off prejudices. He is hindered in his work when …

Surfactant Enhanced Delivery Of C/Ebp Homologous Protein And Angiopoietin 2 Silencing Rna To Prevent Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia In Mouse Lung, John Gregory Ramirez Jan 2014

Surfactant Enhanced Delivery Of C/Ebp Homologous Protein And Angiopoietin 2 Silencing Rna To Prevent Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia In Mouse Lung, John Gregory Ramirez

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Objective. To determine if poractant alfa (Curosurf®) could serve as a viable vehicle for silencing RNA (siRNA) delivery. Specifically, we hypothesize that use of Curosurf® as an enhanced delivery vehicle for C/EBP homologous protein (CHOP) and Angiopoietin 2 (Ang2) siRNA would augment gene silencing, preventing cell death and bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in the mouse lung.

Design. Transfection efficiency of Curosurf® was compared to naked siRNA and Lipofectamine 2000®. MLE-12 cells were transfected with CHOP and Ang2 siRNA using Curosurf®, then exposed to hyperoxic conditions. Cultures were evaluated for respective protein expression and markers of cell death. Curosurf® enhanced siRNA therapy …

Skin Toxicity Associated With Clofarabine And Cytarabine For The Treatment Of Acute Leukemia, Bingnan Zhang

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Skin toxicity is associated with a number of different chemotherapeutic agents used to treat acute leukemias, including cytarabine, daunorubicin, doxorubicin, and methotrexate. While alopecia and radiation recall are well-recognized cutaneous side effects, more recently the term "toxic erythema of chemotherapy" (TEC) has been coined to describe a spectrum of skin findings, ranging from palmar-plantar erythrodysesthesia to erythema of major body folds, with erythroderma representing its most severe form. In this retrospective study of 49 patients with acute leukemia, 10 patients were treated with clofarabine alone (40 mg/m2 daily for 5 days) and 40 patients received this dose of clofarabine plus …

Serpentine Soils, Nishanta Rajakaruna, R. S. Boyd Jan 2014

Serpentine Soils, Nishanta Rajakaruna, R. S. Boyd

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

Serpentine soils are weathered products of a range of ultramafic rocks composed of ferromagnesian silicates. Serpentine more accurately refers to a group of minerals, including antigorite, chrysotile, and lizardite, in hydrothermally altered ultramafic rocks. Common ultramafic rock types include peridotites (dunite, wehrlite, harzburgite, lherzolite) and the secondary alteration products formed by their hydration within the Earth’s crust, including serpentinite, the primary source of serpentine soil. Serpentine soils are generally deficient in plant essential nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and sulfur; have a calcium-to-magnesium (Ca:Mg) molar ratio of less than 1; and have elevated levels of heavy metals such as …

Emerging Biomarkers And Metabolomics For Assessing Toxic Nephropathy And Acute Kidney Injury (Aki) In Neonatology, M. Mussap, A. Noto, V. Fanos, John N. Van Den Anker

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

Identification of novel drug-induced toxic nephropathy and acute kidney injury (AKI) biomarkers has been designated as a top priority by the American Society of Nephrology. Increasing knowledge in the science of biology and medicine is leading to the discovery of still more new biomarkers and of their roles in molecular pathways triggered by physiological and pathological conditions. Concomitantly, the development of the so-called “omics” allows the progressive clinical utilization of a multitude of information, from those related to the human genome (genomics) and proteome (proteomics), including the emerging epigenomics, to those related to metabolites (metabolomics). In preterm newborns, one of …

Autosomal Recessive Polycystic Kidney Disease: The Prototype Of The Hepato-Renal Fibrocystic Diseases, Lisa Guay-Woodford Jan 2014

Autosomal Recessive Polycystic Kidney Disease: The Prototype Of The Hepato-Renal Fibrocystic Diseases, Lisa Guay-Woodford

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

Autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD) is a severe, typically early onset form of renal cystic disease. The care of ARPKD patients has traditionally been the purview of pediatric nephrologists for management of systemic hypertension and progressive renal insufficiency. However, the disease has multisystem manifestations and a comprehensive care strategy frequently requires a multidisciplinary team. In severely affected infants, the diagnosis often is first suspected by obstetricians when enlarged, echogenic kidneys and oligohydramnios are detected on prenatal ultrasounds. Neonatologists are central to the care of these infants, who may have respiratory compromise due to pulmonary hypoplasia and massively enlarged kidneys. …

Investigation Into The Cellular Actions Of Carnosine And C-Peptide, Emma H. Gardner Jan 2014

Investigation Into The Cellular Actions Of Carnosine And C-Peptide, Emma H. Gardner

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Carnosine is a dipeptide composed of beta-alanine and histidine found exclusively in long-lived animal tissues. The cellular action of carnosine is still under extensive investigation; however, it has been proposed to have a role as an anti-oxidant and oxygen free radical scavenger, a physiological buffer, a heavy metal chelator, and has been implicated as an anti-aging agent.2,4 Our lab has been studying the interaction between carnosine and heme by analyzing both the effect carnosine has on the glycation of the heme containing protein cytochrome c and the interaction of carnosine with free hemin. We have observed that the addition …

Natural History Of A Population Of Wood Turtles (Glyptemys Insculpta) In West Virginia, Jessica Curtis Jan 2014

Natural History Of A Population Of Wood Turtles (Glyptemys Insculpta) In West Virginia, Jessica Curtis

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The Wood Turtle (Glyptemys insculpta) is listed as vulnerable in West Virginia and only occurs in the Eastern Panhandle. The study population is unique in West Virginia because it occurs at a much higher mean elevation than other Wood Turtle populations in the state. The primary objective of this study was to determine if, and to what extent, altitude affected this population’s ecology. Turtles were located with opportunistic surveys and captured by hand. I located 31 turtles: 18 males, and 13 females. Turtles were captured a total of 68 times. Ratio of males to females did not differ significantly from …

Magnificent Dimensions, Varied Forms, And Brilliant Colors: The Molecular Ecology And Evolution Of The Indian And Pacific Oceans, Eric D. Crandall, Cynthia Riginos Jan 2014

Magnificent Dimensions, Varied Forms, And Brilliant Colors: The Molecular Ecology And Evolution Of The Indian And Pacific Oceans, Eric D. Crandall, Cynthia Riginos

School of Natural Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

The tropical Indian and Pacific oceans form the world’s largest and most speciose marine biogeographic region: the Indo-Pacific. Due to its size and political complexity, the Indo-Pacific is rarely studied as a whole, yet comprehensive studies of the region promise to teach us much about marine ecology and evolution. Molecular methods can provide substantial initial insights into the processes that create and maintain biodiversity in the region while also providing critical spatial information to managers. This special issue presents six synthetic papers that discuss the current state of molecular work in the Indo-Pacific region as well as best practices for …

Underperformance Of African Protected Area Networks And The Case For New Conservation Models: Insights From Zambia, Peter A. Lindsey, Vincent R. Nyirenda, Jonathan I. Barnes, Matthew S. Becker, Rachel Mcrobb, Craig J. Tambling, W. Andrew Taylor, Frederick G. Watson, Michael T’Sas-Rolfes

School of Natural Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Many African protected areas (PAs) are not functioning effectively. We reviewed the performance of Zambia’s PA network and provide insights into how their effectiveness might be improved. Zambia’s PAs are under-performing in ecological, economic and social terms. Reasons include: a) rapidly expanding human populations, poverty and open-access systems in Game Management Areas (GMAs) resulting in widespread bushmeat poaching and habitat encroachment; b) underfunding of the Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) resulting in inadequate law enforcement; c) reliance of ZAWA on extracting revenues from GMAs to cover operational costs which has prevented proper devolution of user-rights over wildlife to communities; d) on-going …

Trophic Interactions And Dynamic Herbivore Responses To Snowpack, Jedediah F. Brodie, Eric Post, Joel Berger, Fred Watson Jan 2014

Trophic Interactions And Dynamic Herbivore Responses To Snowpack, Jedediah F. Brodie, Eric Post, Joel Berger, Fred Watson

School of Natural Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background: Trophic interactions and population structure can shape how climate change influences ecosystems by modifying herbivore responses to environmental conditions. Predation can influence herbivore behaviour and demography, but how changes in predation and population structure affect herbivore distribution across abiotic gradients remains little known. We assessed whether predators altered the response of different age and sex classes of a dominant ungulate herbivore to changing abiotic conditions.

Results: Elk (Cervus elaphus) presence declined with increasing snowpack, particularly in late winter when their body condition had deteriorated. Females and juveniles exhibited strong but constant negative responses to snowpack throughout the winter, although …
