Results Of Environmental Scanning Applied To The Design Of A Deer Management Decision Support System (Dss) For The United States And California, G. Kent Webb

Faculty Publications, Information Systems & Technology

Using freely available internet search tools for environmental scanning, information related to deer management was collected, categorized, and evaluated with the goal of providing public decision support. Key issues raised in the public debate discovered by the search are addressed with relevant information formatted as output for a decision support system – dashboard elements. A graph addresses contradictory reports about the current direction of the deer population; the trend since 2006 appears to be down. Another graph illustrates the approximate longterm population trend; the current U.S. white-tailed deer population is about the same as in 1500. A table summarizes profiles …

Interaction And Protection Of Antimicrobial Compounds With Carbohydrate-Based Colloidal Systems For Improved Food Safety, Preetam Sarkar Jan 2014

Interaction And Protection Of Antimicrobial Compounds With Carbohydrate-Based Colloidal Systems For Improved Food Safety, Preetam Sarkar

Open Access Dissertations

The food processing industry has focused on using conventional methods for food preservation. However, the recurring incidence of food borne illnesses and outbreaks due to pathogenic or spoilage organisms have called for creation of novel intervention strategies. In recent years, antimicrobial compounds from natural sources are gaining significant importance in improving food safety and security. However, antimicrobials suffer from extensive degradation when applied to complex food systems due to several specific or non-specific interactions. There is an urgent need for the protection of such antimicrobials to prolong their activity in foods. One strategy of achieving the goal is by the …

Male-Male Mounting And The Unreliability Of Body Size As A Character For Mate Choice In Male Japanese Beetles (Popillia Japonica Newman), Paul Switzer, Patrick Forsythe, Kipp Kruse

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Background: Same-sex pairing is common in many animal species. In many insects, same-sex pairing is often thought to be a result of poor sexual discrimination (i.e., a mistake), but few detailed studies of the mechanisms underlying the mistaken pairing have been conducted. Previous studies have found that in the field, a small proportion of Japanese beetle (Popillia japonica) mating pairs consist of two males instead of a male and a female. In the current study, we investigated the relationship between body size, the tendency to mount other males, and the duration of these mounts, in laboratory experiments on male Japanese …

Freezing And Thawing Or Freezing, Thawing, And Aging Effects On Beef Tenderness, A. L. Grayson, D. A. King, S. D. Shackelford, M. Koohmaraie, T. L. Wheeler

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of freezing and thawing or freezing and thawing with an additional aging period after frozen storage on the tenderness of longissimus lumborum (LL) and semitendinosus (ST) steaks relative to aged, fresh steaks. Left-side LL and ST (n = 35 each) were obtained from U.S. Select carcasses classified at the grading stand by the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center visible and near-infrared spectroscopy tenderness system to have predicted slice shear force greater than 16.5 kg at 14 d postmortem. At 2 d postmortem, 2.54 cm thick steaks were cut from each …

Biofilm Formation And Sanitizer Resistance Of Escherichia Coli O157:H7 Strains Isolated From ‘‘High Event Period’’ Meat Contamination, Rong Wang, Norasak Kalchayanand, David A. King, Brandon E. Luedtke, Joseph M. Bosilevac, Terrance M. Arthur

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

In the meat industry, a ‘‘high event period’’ (HEP) is defined as a time period during which commercial meat plants experience a higher than usual rate of Escherichia coli O157:H7 contamination. Genetic analysis indicated that within a HEP, most of the E. coli O157:H7 strains belong to a singular dominant strain type. This was in disagreement with the current beef contamination model stating that contamination occurs when incoming pathogen load on animal hides, which consists of diverse strain types of E. coli O157:H7, exceeds the intervention capacity. Thus, we hypothesize that the HEP contamination may be due to certain in-plant …

Effects Of Decreased Dietary Roughage Concentration On Energy Metabolism And Nutrient Balance In Finishing Beef Cattle, K. E. Hales, T. M. Brown-Brandl, H. C. Freetly Jan 2014

Effects Of Decreased Dietary Roughage Concentration On Energy Metabolism And Nutrient Balance In Finishing Beef Cattle, K. E. Hales, T. M. Brown-Brandl, H. C. Freetly

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

The optimal roughage concentration required in feedlot diets changes continuously for many reasons such as source, availability, price, and interaction with other ingredients in the diet. Wet distillers grains and solubles (WDGS) are common in finishing diets and they contain relatively high amounts of fiber compared with other grains they replace. Therefore, concentration of roughage could be altered when WDGS are included in feedlot diets. There has been very little data published regarding the effects of roughage concentration on energy metabolism and nutrient balance in beef steers. Therefore, the effects of roughage concentration in dryrolled corn (DRC)–based diets containing 25% …

The Impact Of Cow Nutrient Status During The Second And Third Trimesters On Age At Puberty, Antral Follicle Count, And Fertility Of Daughters, R. A. Cushman, Anthony K. Mcneel, Harvey C. Freetly Jan 2014

The Impact Of Cow Nutrient Status During The Second And Third Trimesters On Age At Puberty, Antral Follicle Count, And Fertility Of Daughters, R. A. Cushman, Anthony K. Mcneel, Harvey C. Freetly

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

Fluctuating feed resources to beef cows across the production cycle is a proven method for decreasing input costs; however, limiting nutrients during late gestation have been demonstrated to decrease ovarian follicle numbers in female offspring in some studies. We hypothesize that limiting nutrients to mature (≥3 yr) cross bred beef cows during the second and third trimesters would result in daughters that would have decreased follicle numbers detectable by ultrasonography as yearlings. Over four breeding seasons, pregnant beef cows (n=397) were assigned to either Low (L), Moderate (M) or High (H) nutrient …

Clarke, John Mcewan, Jillian F. Maddox, Veronica Basnayake, Dustin T. Petrik, Barry Simpson, Timothy P. L. Smith, Carol G. Chitko-Mckown, International Sheep Genomics Consortium

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

DNA-based parentage determination accelerates genetic improvement in sheep by increasing pedigree accuracy. Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers can be used for determining parentage and to provide unique molecular identifiers for tracing sheep products to their source. However, the utility of a particular ‘‘parentage SNP’’ varies by breed depending on its minor allele frequency (MAF) and its sequence context. Our aims were to identify parentage SNPs with exceptional qualities for use in globally diverse breeds and to develop a subset for use in North American sheep. Starting with genotypes from 2,915 sheep and 74 breed groups provided by the International Sheep …

Chronic Ambient Hydrogen Sulfide Exposure And Cognitive Function, Bruce R. Reed, Julian Crane, Nick Garrett, David L. Woods, Michael N. Bates

United States Department of Veterans Affairs: Publications

Background: Exposures to hydrogen sulfide gas (H2S) have been inconclusively linked to a variety of negative cognitive outcomes. We investigated possible effects on cognitive function in an urban population with chronic, low-level exposure to H2S.

Methods: Participants were 1637 adults, aged 18–65 years from Rotorua city, New Zealand, exposed to ambient H2S from geothermal sources. Exposures at homes and workplaces were estimated from data collected by summer and winter H2S monitoring networks across Rotorua in 2010/11. Metrics for H2S exposure at the time of participation and for exposure over the last 30 years were calculated. H …

Hair It Is: Examining The Experiences Of Black Women With Natural Hair, Tabora A. Johnson, Teiahsha Bankhead

Publications and Research

Who am I and how do I feel about who I am, are essential questions that help define and construct identity. For Black women and girls, identity is inextricably linked to their relationship to and presentation of their hair. Our research presents findings from an Internet based survey con- ducted with 529 Black women exploring their experiences when wearing their hair in its natural state (not thermally or chemically straightened). These are preliminary findings from the study with reference to the composition of the study participants and how they responded to key ques- tions related to how they perceived when …

Chronic Ethanol Consumption Increases Myocardial Mitochondrial Dna Mutations: A Potential Contribution By Mitochondrial Topoisomerases, D Laurent, J E. Mathew, M Mitry, M Taft, A Force, J G. Edwards

NYMC Faculty Publications

AIMS: Alcoholic cardiomyopathy (ACM) presents as decreased myocardial contractility, arrhythmias and secondary non-ischemic dilated cardiomyopathy leading to heart failure. Mitochondrial dysfunction is known to have a significant role in the development and complications of ACM. This study investigated if chronic ethanol feeding promoted myocardial mitochondrial topoisomerase dysfunction as one underlying cause of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) damage and mitochondrial dysfunction in ACM. METHODS: The impact of chronic ethanol exposure on the myocardial mitochondria was examined in both neonatal cardiomyocytes using 50 mM ethanol for 6 days and in rats assigned to control or ethanol feeding groups for 4 months. RESULTS: Chronic …

Intranasal Neuropeptide Y Reverses Anxiety And Depressive-Like Behavior Impaired By Single Prolonged Stress Ptsd Model, L I. Serova, M Laukova, L G. Alaluf, L Pucillo, E L. Sabban Jan 2014

Intranasal Neuropeptide Y Reverses Anxiety And Depressive-Like Behavior Impaired By Single Prolonged Stress Ptsd Model, L I. Serova, M Laukova, L G. Alaluf, L Pucillo, E L. Sabban

NYMC Faculty Publications

PTSD is a debilitating neuropsychiatric disorder and many patients do not respond sufficiently to current treatments. Neuropeptide Y (NPY) is suggested to provide resilience to the development of PTSD and co-morbid depression. Injections of NPY to the rodent brain are anxiolytic. Recently we showed that intranasal delivery of NPY to rats before or immediately after exposure to single prolonged stress (SPS) animal model of PTSD prevented development of many biochemical and behavioral symptoms of PTSD, indicating its prophylactic potential. Here, we investigated whether intranasal NPY might provide benefits once symptoms have already developed. One week after exposure to SPS stressors, …

"LOVE THEM, HATE THEM, feed and obsess about them as we do, our bodies are our interface with each other and the physical world. They’re the often astonishing and perpetually intriguing vessels that hold who we are. When you think about the body in the context of art, it’s almost impossible to separate one from the other— just as it’s impossible to separate the body from considerations of health and health care. They’re all inextricably intertwined. . .". From the editor's message by Liisa Silander

Honesty Of A Dynamic Female Aggressive Status Signal: Baseline Testosterone Relates To Bill Color In Female American Goldfinches, T T. Pham, Philip Queller, K A. Tarvin, Troy G. Murphy

Biology Faculty Research

Status signals are linked to fighting ability and enable competitors to gain access to resources without risking injury in aggressive combat. The relationship between testosterone (T), a hormone that mediates aggression, and signals of status is well studied in males, but little is known about the relationship between T and female signals of status. Female and male American goldfinches Spinus tristis express a dynamic carotenoid-based orange bill color during the breeding season and previous work has demonstrated that females use orange bill color to communicate competitive ability during intrasexual competition. We test the hypothesis that female bill color reflects baseline …
