Life Cycle Assessment Of Grocery Bags In Common Use In The United States, Robert M. Kimmel, Sc.D. Jan 2014

Life Cycle Assessment Of Grocery Bags In Common Use In The United States, Robert M. Kimmel, Sc.D.

Environmental Studies

In recent years, municipalities throughout the United States have considered, and some have instituted, regulations and restrictions on retail grocery and carrier bags in order to promote sustainability and reduce perceived litter problems. At the time of writing of this report, about six percent of the U.S. population was covered by legislation or regulation affecting the selection and use of grocery bags. Such legislation is designed to encourage use of selected carrier bag types and discourage use of other types. Much controversy exists, however, as to whether the various alternatives encouraged by the regulations are environmentally superior solutions.

The Influence Of Rearing Environment On Life History And Morphological Traits Of Sailfin Molly Fish (P. Latipinna), G. Davidson, C. Crawford, M. Voytko, K. Hogan, M. Ptacek Jan 2014

The Influence Of Rearing Environment On Life History And Morphological Traits Of Sailfin Molly Fish (P. Latipinna), G. Davidson, C. Crawford, M. Voytko, K. Hogan, M. Ptacek

Focus on Creative Inquiry

Life history traits such as time to and size at maturity are influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. One such environmental factor may be the social environment in which a juvenile is reared. This study examined the life history traits of sailfin mollies (Poecilia latipinna) that were reared in varying social environments: in isolation, in groups with an adult male present, and in groups without an adult male present. Since females prefer larger males, we anticipated that males reared in the presence of an adult male should delay maturation and therefore mature at larger sizes in order to better …

Selection Of Wintering Habitats By Bats In The South Carolina Piedmont, J. Kahanamoku, S. Loeb Jan 2014

Selection Of Wintering Habitats By Bats In The South Carolina Piedmont, J. Kahanamoku, S. Loeb

Focus on Creative Inquiry

Bats are nocturnal and elusive, and can travel large distances in search of food. For these reasons and more, little is known about their natural history and behavior, even though they are found all over the globe. Many studies have been done to discover their roosting sites and overall ecological niche, but these studies have been conducted in the summer when the bats are most active. Little is known about where they go and their activity in the winter except for large colonies that dwell in caves, mines, tunnels and other structures. This study focused on learning what habitat types …

A new means of limitingEGSpopulation is being tested onClemson University's campus by administering the drugDiazaConâ„¢ orally with coatedsunflower kernels. The objective of this study is to determine the best bait for administeringDiazaConâ„¢ while minimizing non-target usage. The usage of three baits:corn, peanuts, andsunflowerseedswill betested by placing trail cameras facing feeders in squirrel-frequented trees. Each of the baits will havetwo feeders for a total of six. This same process will berepeated in areas classified as rural, urban with little foot traffic, and urban with heavy foot traffic. The pictures will …

The Ecology Of A New Invasion By Bellamya Japonica In The Savannah Basin, B. Broome, T. Woollen, J. Logan, L. Frees, R. Helstern, S. Fishburne, J. Hains Jan 2014

The Ecology Of A New Invasion By Bellamya Japonica In The Savannah Basin, B. Broome, T. Woollen, J. Logan, L. Frees, R. Helstern, S. Fishburne, J. Hains

Focus on Creative Inquiry

The first known infestation of Bellamya japonica in the Savannah River Basin was discovered in 2006. Investigations of this population led to questions regarding their distribution and behavior. We have completed experiments on behavior and concluded that there exists a significant negative phototactic but no detectable geotactic response. In addition, a study of their dispersal using mark-recapture methods concluded that, while this technique was useful to follow the life history of individual snails, they did not meet the method assumptions and therefore this method could not produce a reliable population estimate. Studies of fecundity have shown a seasonal trend with …

Study of Biological Complexity Publications

Background

Transient gene expression via Agrobacterium-mediated DNA transfer offers a simple and fast method to analyze transgene functions. Although Arabidopsis is the most-studied model plant with powerful genetic and genomic resources, achieving highly efficient and consistent transient expression for gene function analysis in Arabidopsis remains challenging.

Results

We developed a highly efficient and robust Agrobacterium-mediated transient expression system, named AGROBEST (Agrobacterium-mediated enhanced seedling transformation), which achieves versatile analysis of diverse gene functions in intact Arabidopsis seedlings. Using β-glucuronidase (GUS) as a reporter for Agrobacterium-mediated transformation assay, we show that the use of a specific disarmed …

Big Data Visualities, Ron Wigglesworth Jan 2014

Big Data Visualities, Ron Wigglesworth

High School Resources

Make sense of abstract Big Data numbers by creating concrete, static or kinetic images/visualities which communicate or translate the meaning of the numbers to a human scale of understanding. The subject of the visualities should be created in each student’s artist voice, with the freedom and empowerment to express their own social, economic, political and ecological concerns so his/her work has personal meaning and strength of concern. Employ art hand skills in 21st century postmodern art by using Big Data to illustrate interdisciplinary social justice concerns in visualities, created to move a viewer to action.

Mitochondrial Dna Copy Numbers In Pyramidal Neurons Are Decreased And Mitochondrial Biogenesis Transcriptome Signaling Is Disrupted In Alzheimer’S Disease Hippocampi, Ann C. Rice, Paula M. Keeney, Norah K. Algarzae, Amy C. Ladd, Ravindar R. Thomas, James P. Bennett Jan 2014

Neurology Publications

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the major cause of adult-onset dementia and is characterized in its pre-diagnostic stage by reduced cerebral cortical glucose metabolism and in later stages by reduced cortical oxygen uptake, implying reduced mitochondrial respiration. Using quantitative PCR we determined the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) gene copy numbers from multiple groups of 15 or 20 pyramidal neurons, GFAP(+) astrocytes and dentate granule neurons isolated using laser capture microdissection, and the relative expression of mitochondrial biogenesis (mitobiogenesis) genes in hippocampi from 10 AD and 9 control (CTL) cases. AD pyramidal but not dentate granule neurons had significantly reduced mtDNA copy numbers …

Genesis And Pathogenesis Of The 1918 Pandemic H1n1 Influenza A Virus, Michael Worobey, Guan-Zhu Han, Andrew Rambaut Jan 2014

Genesis And Pathogenesis Of The 1918 Pandemic H1n1 Influenza A Virus, Michael Worobey, Guan-Zhu Han, Andrew Rambaut

Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences

The source, timing, and geographical origin of the 1918–1920 pandemic influenza A virus have remained tenaciously obscure for nearly a century, as have the reasons for its unusual severity among young adults. Here, we reconstruct the origins of the pandemic virus and the classic swine influenza and (postpandemic) seasonal H1N1 lineages using a host-specific molecular clock approach that is demonstrably more accurate than previous methods. Our results suggest that the 1918 pandemic virus originated shortly before 1918 when a human H1 virus, which we infer emerged before ∼1907, acquired avian N1 neuraminidase and internal protein genes. We find that the …

Empowered And Engaged: Exploring Social Media Best Practices For Nonprofits, Tessa Warner, Alexis Abel, Frauke Hachtmann

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Faculty Publications

Although nonprofits see value and potential in social media, many have not yet mastered social media and harnessed their full potential. This phenomenological study sought to identify the best social media strategies and tactics for effectively engaging existing and potential donors, volunteers and stakeholders, according to social media nonprofit professionals. Six themes emerged: listening to the audience; engaging instead of fundraising; sharing relevant, valuable and actionable content; being honest, accessible and responsive; using social media as part of a multi-channel strategy; and that measuring is mandatory.

Chapter 11. “Out Of The Blue Came Freedom”: Victory Shows And Aftermath, Sears Eldredge

Book Chapters

The POWs initial response to the news of the end of the war was not what they had expected. "Victory Shows" gave them a chance to release and channel their exuberance into collective celebrations. But keeping the ex-POWs in check during the long wait that followed until their liberation—and later still, until their repatriation—taxed the abilities of the entertainers to the utmost.

My Observations Of Danish Innovation In Doing Science, Learning New Things, And Living An Interesting Life, Eugene S. Takle Jan 2014

My Observations Of Danish Innovation In Doing Science, Learning New Things, And Living An Interesting Life, Eugene S. Takle

The Bridge

I have had the very good fortune to interact with a number of Danish scientists and scholars over my career, and much of the scientific success I have enjoyed is directly related to these interactions. My career has taken me to Denmark several times for a variety of personal as well as professional reasons. Although my contacts have been, in some cases, somewhat episodic and mostly professionally driven, it has been my experience that once strong connections with Danish people are made they persist and do not diminish in spite of the lack of continuous tending.

Sex In The Suwannee The Secretive Love Life Of Gulf Sturgeons, Ken Sulak Jan 2014

Sex In The Suwannee The Secretive Love Life Of Gulf Sturgeons, Ken Sulak

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Mid-February in the Gulf of Mexico and a timeless ritual is about to repeat itself for perhaps the millionth time. Some mysterious signal, possibly increasing day length, flips an internal switch, feeding stops, and the homeward migration begins for the Gulf Sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus desotoi). From far flung places along the Gulf Coast, Gulf Sturgeons start heading back to their natal rivers – they know the way instinctively. Maybe they seek out the special chemical taste of their home river, imprinted at hatching. Or perhaps the ultrasensitive electric organs decorating the underside of the snout can follow the …
