Campus violence is a significant social and public health problem in the United States and poses a unique situation for service provision. Victims often have access to both campus-based and community-based services, as they are simultaneously students and citizens of a larger community. Therefore, understanding the needs of campus violence service providers is essential for enhancing responses to campus violence. This research identifies knowledge and service delivery needs among service providers to support a comprehensive approach to ending campus violence. As our country becomes more racially, ethnically, and linguistically diverse, pre-service teachers must be fully prepared to deal with these changes. As the demographics change, the majority of teachers continue to be white, middle-class females having to teach students who are different from themselves. Ladson-Billings (1995) suggests that schools of education must prepare teachers with the knowledge, skills and values that will enable them to be culturally competent in the classroom so as to meet the challenges of a pluralistic society. The goal of therapeutic angiogenesis is the development of functional and mature vasculature by combining biological and physical cues that mimic the native extracellular matrix. In this study we evaluated if immobilizing vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) gradients and SDF-1α on gelatin nanofibrous scaffolds with different fiber orientations (i.e. random or aligned) influence the angiogenic potential of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). Both cell types successfully adhered onto gelatin B scaffolds. VEGF gradients alone or combined with SDF-1α as well as fiber orientation had a pronounced effect on cell behavior, morphology and orientation. Cells …

Secretion Of Interferon Gamma From Human Immune Cells Is Altered By Exposure To Tributyltin And Dibutyltin, Shanieek Lawrence, Jacqueline Reid, Margaret Whalen

Tributyltin (TBT) and dibutyltin (DBT) are widespread environmental contaminants found in food, beverages, and human blood samples. Both of these butyltins (BTs) interfere with the ability of human natural killer (NK) cells to lyse target cells and alter secretion of the pro-inflammatory cytokine tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) from human immune cells in vitro. The capacity of BTs to interfere with secretion of other pro-inflammatory cytokines has not been examined. Interferon gamma (IFNγ) is a modulator of adaptive and innate immune responses, playing an important role in overall immune competence. This study shows that both TBT and DBT alter secretion …

This essay examines the work of Native photographers and artists and the ways their work addresses the decolonizing practice of the study of visual images, as well as stimulating anomalous and unexpected interpretations. It situates representations from a starting point of power, oppression and hegemony as central components of visual imagery, and also as an opportunity to promote dialogue and encourage new interpretations and narratives. The boy’s earliest memory is of his father beating a man nearly to death on the street outside their apartment building in West Chicago. The beating itself is a little fuzzy in the boy’s memory, but he does remember clearly—or believes he remembers—the blood on his father’s hands and shirt, the injured man on his back and moaning on the sidewalk. Apparently the man had permanent brain damage from the beating, and the boy’s father went to prison because of it.
