Ethics And Fiction: Imaginary Evil And Aesthetic Value, David Michael Hurlburt Nov 2013

Ethics And Fiction: Imaginary Evil And Aesthetic Value, David Michael Hurlburt

Open Access Dissertations

Many fictional works aim to amuse audiences with accounts of immoral characters engaging in evil deeds. A number of positions have emerged to determine to what degree, if any, a work’s treatment of unethical events shapes its aesthetic value. In this dissertation I will evaluate four existing positions and advance my own for consideration, empathic autonomism. I argue that it is not unethical for audience members to enjoy imaginary immoral acts and I will show how this affects various stances. I will present objections to rival views and argue that a fictional work’s ability to allow audiences to empathize with …

Laser Induced Ignition With Resonant Multiphoton Absorption In Oxygen, Steven F. Adams Nov 2013

Laser Induced Ignition With Resonant Multiphoton Absorption In Oxygen, Steven F. Adams

Physics Seminars

A novel resonant laser-induced breakdown scheme has been demonstrated to provide precision spatial guidance of spark formation within an air flow and has been further demonstrated successfully in resonant laser-induced ignition of a moderate-speed flow of an air-propane mixture. This scheme could potentially provide ignition within a combustion system with a laser trigger leading to breakdown of an air-fuel flow within a high-voltage gap using a compact low power laser source. The laser scheme involves resonant enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) in molecular oxygen and subsequent laser field-enhanced electron avalanche to generate a pre-ionized micro-plasma path between high voltage electrodes and …

First Freshman Ever Admitted To Gsu!, Office Of Marketing And Communications

Press Releases

Thursday, November 21 was a big day for Marian Catholic High School senior Emily Metzger and a big day for Governors State University!

Emily, accompanied by her parents, Stephanie and Brian, arrived on campus ostensibly to shop at a GSU student art market. Everything changed, however, when Courtney Sanders, Vice President of Enrollment Management, stepped to the podium and announced, “We are here to welcome the very first student to be admitted to the first freshman class of Governors State University. Welcome to GSU, Emily Metzger!”

As GSU’s first admitted freshman, Emily received a huge round of applause, a large …

Is Theoretical Rationality Derivatively Normative?, Kevin Charles Kifer Nov 2013

Is Theoretical Rationality Derivatively Normative?, Kevin Charles Kifer

Theses

In the recent normativity literature, much attention has been paid to the question of whether rationality is normative. As rationality requires every agent’s attitudes to be logically consistent—and prohibits inconsistent attitudes—we might wonder whether we always have a reason to be rational. The normativity of rationality faces a strong skeptical challenge by Niko Kolodny (2005, 2008). Kolodny’s “why be rational?” challenge denies that we always have a reason to be rational. Andrew Reisner (2011) takes up this challenge and argues that—at a minimum—we necessarily have a strong reason to satisfy requirements of belief consistency and that this reason is parasitic …

Double Resonance Spectroscopy Of The D1Πu+ And B''B-Bar 1Σu+ States Near The Third Dissociation Threshold Of H2, R. C. Ekey, A. E. Cordova, W. Duan, Alexander M. Chartrand, Elizabeth Mccormack Nov 2013

Double Resonance Spectroscopy Of The D1Πu+ And B''B-Bar 1Σu+ States Near The Third Dissociation Threshold Of H2, R. C. Ekey, A. E. Cordova, W. Duan, Alexander M. Chartrand, Elizabeth Mccormack

Physics Faculty Research and Scholarship

Double-resonance laser spectroscopy via the E, F 1Σg+, v' = 6, J' state was used to probe the energy region below the third dissociation limit of molecular hydrogen. Resonantly enhanced multi-photon ionization spectra were recorded by detecting ion production as a function of energy using a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Energies and line widths for the v = 14–17 levels of the D1Πu+ state of H2 are reported and compared to experimental data obtained by using VUV synchrotron light excitation (Dickenson et al. 2010 J. Chem. Phys. 133 144317) and fully ab …

Phosphatidylinositol 3-Kinase (Pi3k) Inhibitors As Cancer Therapeutics, Akintunde Akinleye, Parthu Avvaru, Muhammad Furqan, Yongping Song, Delong Liu Nov 2013

Phosphatidylinositol 3-Kinase (Pi3k) Inhibitors As Cancer Therapeutics, Akintunde Akinleye, Parthu Avvaru, Muhammad Furqan, Yongping Song, Delong Liu

NYMC Faculty Publications

Phosphatidylinositol 3-kinases (PI3Ks) are lipid kinases that regulate diverse cellular processes including proliferation, adhesion, survival, and motility. Dysregulated PI3K pathway signaling occurs in one-third of human tumors. Aberrantly activated PI3K signaling also confers sensitivity and resistance to conventional therapies. PI3K has been recognized as an attractive molecular target for novel anti-cancer molecules. In the last few years, several classes of potent and selective small molecule PI3K inhibitors have been developed, and at least fifteen compounds have progressed into clinical trials as new anticancer drugs. Among these, idelalisib has advanced to phase III trials in patients with advanced indolent non-Hodgkin's lymphoma …

Skin, Nina Boutsikaris Nov 2013

Skin, Nina Boutsikaris

Booth

Even at the age of seven I wanted to show some skin. We lived in Los Angeles, and my highbrow hippie parents had enrolled me in a tiny, rustic school nestled deep in Topanga Canyon, with horses and a two-story tree house where art classes were sometimes held. Maybe it was the freedom encouraged by our beachy lifestyle, or the shining thong-clad butt cheeks of rollerblading Santa Monica women, or the way Ariel looked when she hoisted herself up onto the rock, chest heaving, bright red hair wet against her stomach—but there was something out there that I wanted in …

Innovations In Evaluating Health Campaigns In Developing Countries, W. Douglas Evans, Marc Boulay, Rebecca Firestone, Rajiv N. Rimal Nov 2013

Innovations In Evaluating Health Campaigns In Developing Countries, W. Douglas Evans, Marc Boulay, Rebecca Firestone, Rajiv N. Rimal

GW Health Communication and Marketing Symposium Series

When conducting research in resource-poor settings, what research-method textbooks prescribe often varies substantially from what actually gets implemented on the ground. Randomization often breaks down, extraneous noise often pollutes the purity of experimental designs, and other challenges emerge in the field. The panel will highlight some of those challenges and engage the audience in discussions about possible solutions. Dr. Boulay will illustrate an analytic approach that combines propensity score matching and mediation analysis to provide a more comprehensive evaluation of SBCC activities. Dr. Firestone will discuss PSI's experience using coarsened exact matching to strengthen evaluation of its behavior change communications …
