Safety Of Botulinum Toxin For Dysphagia In Oculopharyngeal Muscular Dystrophy, Sarah Youssof
Safety Of Botulinum Toxin For Dysphagia In Oculopharyngeal Muscular Dystrophy, Sarah Youssof
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Despite multiple studies reporting marked benefit of botulinum toxin (BTX) for treatment of cricopharyngeal dysphagia, little is known about its safety for this indication. We examined the safety of cricopharyngeal BTX for dysphagia in oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy (OPMD). We reviewed records of patients with OPMD who received cricopharyngeal BTX. Twenty-four patients underwent 66 procedures. Overall adverse event frequency was 44%. The most common adverse events were dysphonia (24%) and worsened dysphagia (14%). Logistic regression demonstrated that dose was a significant predictor of worsened dysphagia (P=0.036) and of the composite event of dysphonia or worsened dysphagia (P=0.009). There was a non-significant …
A Pointillism Approach For Natural Language Processing Of Social Media, Piyo Song
A Pointillism Approach For Natural Language Processing Of Social Media, Piyo Song
Computer Science ETDs
Natural language processing tasks typically start with the basic unit of words, and then from words and their meanings a big picture is constructed about what the meanings of documents or other larger constructs are in terms of the topics discussed. Social media is very challenging for natural language processing because it challenges the notion of a word. Social media users regularly use words that are not in even the most comprehensive lexicons. These new words can be unknown named entities that have suddenly risen in prominence because of a current event, or they might be neologisms newly created to …
Abstract Models Of Molecular Walkers, Oleg Semenov
Abstract Models Of Molecular Walkers, Oleg Semenov
Computer Science ETDs
Recent advances in single-molecule chemistry have led to designs for artificial multi-pedal walkers that follow tracks of chemicals. The walkers, called molecular spiders, consist of a rigid chemically inert body and several flexible enzymatic legs. The legs can reversibly bind to chemical substrates on a surface, and through their enzymatic action convert them to products. We study abstract models of molecular spiders to evaluate how efficiently they can perform two tasks: molecular transport of cargo over tracks and search for targets on finite surfaces. For the single-spider model our simulations show a transient behavior wherein certain spiders move superdiffusively over …
Model Selection For Stochastic Block Models, Xiaoran Yan
Model Selection For Stochastic Block Models, Xiaoran Yan
Computer Science ETDs
As a flexible representation for complex systems, networks (graphs) model entities and their interactions as nodes and edges. In many real-world networks, nodes divide naturally into functional communities, where nodes in the same group connect to the rest of the network in similar ways. Discovering such communities is an important part of modeling networks, as community structure offers clues to the processes which generated the graph. The stochastic block model is a popular network model based on community structures. It splits nodes into blocks, within which all nodes are stochastically equivalent in terms of how they connect to the rest …
Community Detection In Complex Networks, Yaojia Zhu
Community Detection In Complex Networks, Yaojia Zhu
Computer Science ETDs
The stochastic block model is a powerful tool for inferring community structure from network topology. However, the simple block model considers community structure as the only underlying attribute for forming the relational interactions among the nodes, this makes it prefer a Poisson degree distribution within each community, while most real-world networks have a heavy-tailed degree distribution. This is essentially because the simple assumption under the traditional block model is not consistent with some real-world circumstances where factors other than the community memberships such as overall popularity also heavily affect the pattern of the relational interactions. The degree-corrected block model can …

Delivering Access: Home Birth For Women Of Families Of Color In New Mexico, Micaela Lara Cadena
Architecture and Planning ETDs
This thesis examines the access that low-income women of color have to home birth in New Mexico through qualitative research with home birth providers, New Mexico Licensed Midwives. New Mexican women and families have been birthing their children in homes and community settings for generations. In contemporary New Mexico, pregnant women can birth at home, in a free-standing birth center, or in a hospital setting. This thesis seeks to explore: 1) The central tenets of home birth, as explained by Licensed Midwives; 2) The factors that impact access to home birth in New Mexico as perceived by Licensed Midwives; 3) …

The Effects Of Precipitation Manipulation On Carbohydrate Dynamics And Mortality In A Piñon-Juniper Woodland, Lee Turin Dickman
The Effects Of Precipitation Manipulation On Carbohydrate Dynamics And Mortality In A Piñon-Juniper Woodland, Lee Turin Dickman
Biology ETDs
Drought-induced forest mortality is an increasing global problem with far-reaching consequences, yet mortality mechanisms remain poorly understood. Depletion of non-structural carbohydrate (NSC) stores has been implicated as a major factor in drought-induced mortality, but experimental field tests are rare. We conducted an ecosystem-scale precipitation manipulation experiment and evaluated leaf and twig NSC dynamics of two co-occurring conifers with different water regulation strategies; the relatively drought-averse piñon pine (Pinus edulis) and relatively drought-tolerant oneseed juniper (Juniperus monosperma). Experimental drought caused decreased leaf starch in dying trees of both species and increased allocation to glucose and fructose in juniper, consistent with osmoregulation …

Systematics Within The Zopheridae Complex (Coleoptera: Tenebrionoidea), Nathan Patrick Lord
Biology ETDs
The Ironclad Beetles, Cylindrical Bark Beetles, and Monommatid Beetles are a cosmopolitan family with over 1,700 species worldwide. Now constituting members from three previous families (Zopheridae, Monommatidae, Colydiidae), Zopheridae represent a wide array of morphological diversity and variability. Larvae of most members are fungivores/detritovores, while some are suspected of boring into sound wood. Adults are predaceous or fungivores, and some zopherids have been linked to the spread of fungal disease. Morphologically, adults are hard to separate from other tenebrionoid families. Zopherids can be distinguished by 9-11 segmented antennae with a usually abrupt, 1-3 segmented club, antennal insertions concealed from above, …
Molecular Characterization Of The Freshwater Snail Physella Acuta, Journey R. Nolan
Molecular Characterization Of The Freshwater Snail Physella Acuta, Journey R. Nolan
Biology ETDs
Current insights into general animal biology, including immune function, are derived mostly from a few model organisms, a necessity imposed by effort required for in-depth studies. Modern next-generation sequencing (NGS) enables genomics-level investigations to test whether specific aspects of biology are general or unique across animal phylogeny. Meaningful comparisons require thorough identification of phylogenetically-relevant species. To provide a touchstone for Biomphalaria glabrata, a freshwater snail that is a major study model for invertebrate immunity, physid snails (Physidae; Hygrophila; Panpulmonata; Gastropoda; Mollusca) will be developed as a model for comparative immunogenomics. Chapter 1 introduces current research capabilities and details the rationale …

Nanta Hosh Chahta Immi? (What Are Choctaw Lifeways?): Cultural Preservation In The Casino Era, Sean Everette Gantt
Anthropology ETDs
This dissertation investigates the long-term impacts of tribal economic development programs on the cultural preservation efforts of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians (MBCI). Since the 1970s the Mississippi Choctaw have initiated many different economic enterprises ranging from manufacturing plants to resort development, owning and operating a diversified portfolio of manufacturing, service, retail, and tourism enterprises. This history of engaging with western business models offers a unique perspective for analyzing the long-term effects of these practices on a tribal community. My work with the MBCI engages a long debate over the use of capitalist business models in tribal economic development …

Tsehootsooidi Baa Hane: Emergent Oral Histories From A Navajo Community Based Oral History Project In Ft. Defiance, Az, Gwendolyn W. Saul
Anthropology ETDs
This dissertation research is based on a community oral history project about Tséhootsooi or Fort Defiance, Arizona, a predominantly Navajo community. Colonial historical narratives of Fort Defiance selectively focus on the non-Navajo institutions that developed within the community: hospital, boarding school, and trading posts; in response, local residents oral histories challenge settler colonial narratives and speak to the events and places that make this community significant to Navajo history. Through the theoretical lens of decolonization and critical indigenous theory, my research addresses Navajo historical representation, the production of settler colonial narratives and community residents' efforts to assert sovereignty through Navajo …

Defying Binaries: A Critical Examination Of 'Old' Versus 'New' In The Art Of Pablita Velarde And Helen Hardin, Jenna M. Kloeppel
Art & Art History ETDs
Santa Clara painter Pablita Velarde and her artist daughter, Helen Hardin, are often discussed in both popular and academic literature as being representative, respectively, of two very different artistic traditions. Velardes art is commonly viewed as very much a product of her Dorothy Dunn-trained Santa Fe Studio background, and Hardin is seen as an avant-garde, wholly innovative artistic force representative of the generation of Native artists more aligned with the anti-Studio philosophies of the Institute of American Indian Arts, which was developing as Hardin was beginning her career in painting. This thesis will examine the modes of representation that have …

A Solution Hiding In Plain Sight: Special Education And Better Outcomes For Students With Social, Emotional, And Behavioral Challenges, Yael Cannon, Michael J. Gregory, Julie Waterstone
Faculty Scholarship
This Article will contribute to the ongoing dialogue about special education and the IDEA in two ways. First, it will describe patterns that have emerged from our work with individual children and families that shed light on how common IDEA implementation failures increase the risk of poor outcomes for students with social, emotional and behavioral challenges. Critiques of the law and proposals to amend it should be grounded in an understanding of exactly how and why it is falling short of meeting its promise to these children. Our hope is that mapping the common implementation failures we have seen in …
Indian Aviation Leadership Engagement: Case Study In Leadership Development Using The Cynevin Framework, Daryl Watkins, Kees Rietsema
Indian Aviation Leadership Engagement: Case Study In Leadership Development Using The Cynevin Framework, Daryl Watkins, Kees Rietsema
Publications
The paper presents a case study of a leadership development workshop facilitated by two American educators for a group of Indian aviation executives. The Indian aviation environment is quite complex and at times chaotic. The leadership development workshop was conducted as a sense-making exercise using Snowden’s Cynevin Framework. Pre-seminar and post-seminar survey comparisons indicated that the executives experienced significant shifts in attitude during the three-day workshop. Pre-seminar attitudes demonstrated little differentiation between sense-making and leadership action within complex and chaotic contexts. Post-seminar attitudes demonstrated a broader contextual understanding of sense-making and leadership in complex and chaotic environments. The executives left …

Introduction: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in hospitalised patients. VTE prevention has been identified as a major health need internationally to improve patient safety. A National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) guideline was issued in February 2010. Its key priorities were to assess patients for risk of VTE on admission to hospital, assess patients for bleeding risk and evaluate the risks and benefits of prescribing VTE prophylaxis. Objectives: To evaluate the implementation of NICE guidance and its impact on patient safety. Design: Before and after observational study design was used to investigate …

Gpaq-R: Development And Psychometric Properties Of A Version Of The General Practice Assessment Questionnaire For Use For Revalidation By General Practitioners In The Uk, M Roland, M Roberts, V Rhenius, J Campbell
Peninsula Medical School
BACKGROUND: The General Practice Assessment Questionnaire (GPAQ) has been widely used to assess patient experience in general practice in the UK since 2004. In 2013, new regulations were introduced by the General Medical Council (GMC) requiring UK doctors to undertake periodic revalidation, which includes assessment of patient experience for individual doctors. We describe the development of a new version of GPAQ - GPAQ-R which addresses the GMC's requirements for revalidation as well as additional NHS requirements for surveys that GPs may need to carry out in their own practices. METHODS: Questionnaires were given out by doctors or practice staff after …

Bayesian Methods To Determine Performance Differences And To Quantify Variability Among Centers In Multi-Center Trials: The Ihast Trial, Eo Bayman, Km Chaloner, Bj Hindman, Mm Todd, Ihast Investigators
Peninsula Medical School
BACKGROUND: To quantify the variability among centers and to identify centers whose performance are potentially outside of normal variability in the primary outcome and to propose a guideline that they are outliers. METHODS: Novel statistical methodology using a Bayesian hierarchical model is used. Bayesian methods for estimation and outlier detection are applied assuming an additive random center effect on the log odds of response: centers are similar but different (exchangeable). The Intraoperative Hypothermia for Aneurysm Surgery Trial (IHAST) is used as an example. Analyses were adjusted for treatment, age, gender, aneurysm location, World Federation of Neurological Surgeons scale, Fisher score …
