A Northward Range Extension Of The Hispid Cotton Rat (Sigmodon Hispidus) In Missouri, Cody W. Thompson, Elmer J. Finck Dec 2013

A Northward Range Extension Of The Hispid Cotton Rat (Sigmodon Hispidus) In Missouri, Cody W. Thompson, Elmer J. Finck

The Prairie Naturalist

The hispid cotton rat (Sigmodon hispidus) is a widely distributed rodent with a geographic range extending from north-central Mexico to southern Nebraska and central Virginia and from southeastern Arizona east to Florida (Carleton et al. 1999, Peppers and Bradley 2000, Wilson and Reeder 2005) with isolated populations in Arizona (Bradley et al. 2012) and California (Clark 1972). Range expansions for the species have been well documented (Clark 1972, Farney 1975, Benedict et al. 2000, Wright et al. 2010, Wills et al. 2011). The majority of these range expansions have occurred across the Central Plains during the 20th century …

Evaluation Of Three Nest Searching Methods For Ring-Necked Pheasant, Jeffery W. Stackhouse, Kevin K. Sedivec, Benjamin A. Geaumont Dec 2013

Evaluation Of Three Nest Searching Methods For Ring-Necked Pheasant, Jeffery W. Stackhouse, Kevin K. Sedivec, Benjamin A. Geaumont

The Prairie Naturalist

Ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) are a highly sought after game bird and as such, much research has been conducted regarding their ecology (Warner 1981, Trautman 1982, Johnson and Knue 1989). Perhaps the most investigated aspect of pheasant ecology is the species’ reproductive season (e.g. Linder et al. 1960, Dumke and Pils 1979, Leif 1994) with many studies focusing on nesting habitat (Baskett 1947, Clark et al. 1999). Results from previous research have acknowledged the difficulty associated with locating pheasant nests in their preferred cover types (Hanson 1970, Evrard 2000). Studies of pheasant nesting ecology have been based on …

Temperatures are finally starting to cool a bit (for those of us in the northern Great Plains region) and Thanksgiving break is just around the corner.

I offer my reflections in the spirit of encouraging each of you to take a break from your professional obligations and spend time with friends and family enjoying nature and everything it has to offer this fall.

Salamander Colonization Of Chase Lake, Stutsman County, North Dakota, David M. Mushet, Kyle I. Mclean, Craig A. Stockwell Dec 2013

Salamander Colonization Of Chase Lake, Stutsman County, North Dakota, David M. Mushet, Kyle I. Mclean, Craig A. Stockwell

The Prairie Naturalist

Salt concentrations in lakes are dynamic. In the western United States, water diversions have caused significant declines in lake levels resulting in increased salinity, placing many aquatic species at risk (Galat and Robinson 1983, Beutel et al. 2001). Severe droughts can have similar effects on salt concentrations and aquatic communities (Swanson et al. 2003). Conversely, large inputs of water can dilute salt concentrations and contribute to community shifts (Euliss et al. 2004).

Chase Lake is a large, shallow, alkaline lake in east-central North Dakota most famously known for supporting one of the largest breeding colonies of the American white pelican …

Associations Between Iron Concentration And Productivity In Montane Streams Of The Black Hills, South Dakota, Cari-Ann Hayer, Benjamin M. Holocmb, Steven R. Chipps Dec 2013

Associations Between Iron Concentration And Productivity In Montane Streams Of The Black Hills, South Dakota, Cari-Ann Hayer, Benjamin M. Holocmb, Steven R. Chipps

The Prairie Naturalist

Iron is an important micronutrient found in aquatic systems that can influence nutrient availability (e.g. phosphorus) and primary productivity. In streams, high iron concentrations often are associated with low pH as a result of acid mine drainage, which is known to affect fish and invertebrate communities. Streams in the Black Hills of South Dakota are generally circumneutral in pH, yet select streams exhibit high iron concentrations associated with natural iron deposits. In this study, we examined relationships among iron concentration, periphyton biomass, macroinvertebrate abundance, and fish assemblages in four Black Hills streams. The stream with the highest iron concentration (~5 …

Relationships Among Walleye Mercury, Selenium, Stable Isotopes, Size And Age, Mark J. Fincel, Robert P. Hanten, Shannon Minerich Dec 2013

Relationships Among Walleye Mercury, Selenium, Stable Isotopes, Size And Age, Mark J. Fincel, Robert P. Hanten, Shannon Minerich

The Prairie Naturalist

Bioaccumulation of mercury is well-documented in aquatic ecosystems and occurs as mercury is accumulated and passed up food chains (Kidd et al. 1995, Atwell et al. 1998, Downs et al. 1998). Trophic level correlations have been widely reported for mercury (Snodgrass et al. 2000) and other metals (Barron 1995). Generally, within a system, carnivores have the highest mercury loadings, omnivores intermediate and herbivores the lowest (Phillips et al. 1980). However, little research has focused on the differences in mercury bioaccumulation for a single species that ranges across multiple trophic levels (Burger et al. 2001).

Stable isotope analysis has expanded the …

An Analysis Of A District-Led Leadership Seminar On The Dispositions Of Certified Staff Members, Michael J. Rupprecht Dec 2013

An Analysis Of A District-Led Leadership Seminar On The Dispositions Of Certified Staff Members, Michael J. Rupprecht

Student Work

The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not a district-led, grow-your-own leadership seminar had a significant impact on the dispositions of its members compared to staff members who did not participate in the program. The participants involved (N = 20) included a naturally formed group of certified staff members (n = 10) who attended and completed a nine-month, district-led, grow-your-own leadership seminar and a demographically-matched, randomly selected group of certified staff members (n = 10) who did not attend or complete the leadership seminar. The dependent variable used in this study was the Administrator Disposition Index (ADI), …

Multi-Robot Task Allocation: A Spatial Queuing Approach, William H. Lenagh Dec 2013

Multi-Robot Task Allocation: A Spatial Queuing Approach, William H. Lenagh

Student Work

Multi-Robot Task Allocation (MRTA) is an important area of research in autonomous multi-robot systems. The main problem in MRTA is to match a set of robots to a set of tasks so that the tasks can be completed by the robots while optimizing a certain metric such as the time required to complete all tasks, distance traveled by the robots and energy expended by the robots. We consider a scenario where the tasks can appear dynamically and the location of tasks are not known a priori by the robots. Additionally, for a task to be completed, it needs to be …

A New Species Of Euscorpius From Tinos Island, Greece (Scorpiones: Euscorpiidae), Victor Fet, Michael E. Soleglad, Aristeidis Parmakelis, Panayiota Kotsakiozi, Iasmi Stathi Dec 2013

A New Species Of Euscorpius From Tinos Island, Greece (Scorpiones: Euscorpiidae), Victor Fet, Michael E. Soleglad, Aristeidis Parmakelis, Panayiota Kotsakiozi, Iasmi Stathi

Biological Sciences Faculty Research

The scorpion genus Euscorpius has been insufficiently studied on the Aegean Islands of Greece. We describe a new species from the Western Cyclades, E. kritscheri sp. n., from Tinos Island. The species-level status of this form is confirmed by a phylogenetic study based on multiple DNA markers. In addition, a population from nearby Andros Island is characterized as E. cf. kritscheri, which could be potentially a separate species.

Understanding And Managing End Of Life Symptoms: A Teaching Guide For The Primary Caregiver, Christine Miraglia Dec 2013

Understanding And Managing End Of Life Symptoms: A Teaching Guide For The Primary Caregiver, Christine Miraglia

Nursing Masters

Abstract The goal of hospice is to support patients and the family or friend who has taken on the role of the caregiver. The majority of care provided in the home to the ill patient is provided by informal caregivers with limited experience. Emotional and physical strain can cause caregiver breakdown even to the most capable caregiver. Caregivers become over whelmed and panic when they are expected to monitor, interpret, and make decisions, in providing direct care. There are tremendous expectations of the caregiver in the home setting. The home healthcare hospice nurse should provide teaching materials and information to …

Management Of Acute Gi Bleeding In Patients Who Refuse Blood Or Blood Products, Eliza K. Weis Dec 2013

Management Of Acute Gi Bleeding In Patients Who Refuse Blood Or Blood Products, Eliza K. Weis

Nursing Masters

Background and Significance: The Gastroenterology consult service evaluates patients who are admitted to the hospital with gastrointestinal (GI) tract bleeding. Prompt endoscopic evaluation is the mainstay for the diagnosis and treatment of clinically significant GI tract bleeding and occurs in concert with the initiation of supportive measures, including replacement of lost blood, correction of coagulopathy, treatment of hemorrhagic shock, and stimulation of erythropoiesis. There have been several case reports of patients who exsanguinated from acute GI tract bleeding due to refusal of blood or blood products on religious grounds. Management of such patients presents many treatment and ethical challenges. The …

Factual Precedents, Allison Orr Larsen Dec 2013

Factual Precedents, Allison Orr Larsen

Faculty Publications

Lawyers and judges speak to each other in a language of precedents—decisions from cases that have come before. The most persuasive precedent to cite, of course, is an on-point decision of the U.S. Supreme Court. But Supreme Court opinions are changing. They contain more factual claims about the world than ever before, and those claims are now rich with empirical data. This Supreme Court factfinding is also highly accessible; fast digital research leads directly to factual language in old cases that is perfect for arguments in new ones. An unacknowledged consequence of all this is the rise of what I …

Expanding The Definitions Of ‘Undertaking’ And ‘Economic Activity’: Application Of Competition Rules To The Actions Of State Institutions In Bosnia And Herzegovina, Alexandr Svetlicinii Dec 2013

Expanding The Definitions Of ‘Undertaking’ And ‘Economic Activity’: Application Of Competition Rules To The Actions Of State Institutions In Bosnia And Herzegovina, Alexandr Svetlicinii

Yearbook of Antitrust and Regulatory Studies

State-initiated competition restraints remain a recurrent problem for competition law enforcement in transition economies characterized by a history of price controls and extensive State regulation of economic activities. The application of the concepts of ‘undertaking’ and ‘economic activity’ to the actions of State institutions, as developed in EU competition law, allows national competition authorities to enforce competition rules against public bodies. EU candidate countries, as well as States aspiring to a candidate status, have been continuously reforming their competition laws, aligning them with acquis communautaire and applying EU competition law concepts and standards in their domestic enforcement practices. This paper …

Competition Law Enforcement In Times Of Crisis: The Case Of Serbia, Dusan Popovic Dec 2013

Competition Law Enforcement In Times Of Crisis: The Case Of Serbia, Dusan Popovic

Yearbook of Antitrust and Regulatory Studies

The development of Serbian competition law started in 2005 with the adoption of its first modern Competition Act. National competition rules are generally harmonized with European Union law, especially following the adoption of the current Competition Act of 2009. However, several problems in competition law enforcement can be identified still, the importance of which increases as the effects of the current economic crisis spread. The paper focuses mainly on three problems specific to competition law enforcement in Serbia, a country with a weak economy. The first problem identified is that of a possibly privileged treatment of state-owned companies. The Competition …

Private Enforcement Of Competition Law In Slovenia: A New Field To Be Developed By Slovenian Courts, Maja Brkan, Tanja Bratina Dec 2013

Private Enforcement Of Competition Law In Slovenia: A New Field To Be Developed By Slovenian Courts, Maja Brkan, Tanja Bratina

Yearbook of Antitrust and Regulatory Studies

This contribution aims to demonstrate the legal framework that can shape and influence private enforcement in Slovenia. This includes, in particular, conditions for damage claims, collective redress mechanisms, legal costs and fees as well as discovery and burden of proof. It is shown which legislative changes may be needed in order to improve the effectiveness of private enforcement and the practical obstacles that will have to be overcome in the future. Furthermore, the article analyses the jurisprudence of Slovenian courts concerning private enforcement. Although there was practically no jurisprudence in this area only a few years ago, Slovenian courts have …

Private Enforcement Of Competition Law In Polish Courts: The Story Of An (Almost) Lost Hope For Development, Agata Jurkowska-Gomułka Dec 2013

Private Enforcement Of Competition Law In Polish Courts: The Story Of An (Almost) Lost Hope For Development, Agata Jurkowska-Gomułka

Yearbook of Antitrust and Regulatory Studies

The article reviews judgments of Polish courts on private enforcement of competition law between 1993 and 2012. A quantitative analysis of this jurisprudence shows that very few cases of that type exist at all. Their qualitative characteristics illustrate that: none of them referred to consumers; none of the claims was a 'pure' damage claim; all of these cases focused on partial or general nullity of contracts concluded as a result of an anticompetitive practice; almost all of them concerned an abuse of a dominant position; only one referred to competition-restricting agreements. The relevant jurisprudence largely focused on the binding force …

Private Enforcement Of Competition Law – The Case Of Estonia, Karin Sein Dec 2013

Private Enforcement Of Competition Law – The Case Of Estonia, Karin Sein

Yearbook of Antitrust and Regulatory Studies

Jurisprudence on private enforcement of competition law has so far been almost non-existent in Estonia. Most cases where competition law issues are raised within the context of damage claims are solved by out-of-court settlements. One of the main reasons for this scarcity is the fact that this is a fairly unfamiliar field for Estonian lawyers, attorneys and judges. The first reason for the low number of private enforcement of competition law cases in Estonia is therefore lacking awareness and legal uncertainty. The other key barrier lies in burden of proof issues associated with damage claims. It has proven very difficult …

Eternal Recurrence In A Neo-Kantian Context, Michael S. Green Dec 2013

Eternal Recurrence In A Neo-Kantian Context, Michael S. Green

Faculty Publications

In this essay, I argue that someone who adopted a falsificationism of the sort that I have attributed to Nietzsche would be attracted to the doctrine of eternal recurrence. For Nietzsche, to think the becoming revealed through the senses means falsifying it through being. But the eternal recurrence offers the possibility of thinking becoming without falsification. I then argue that someone who held Nietzsche’s falsificationism would see in human agency a conflict between being and becoming similar to that in empirical judgment. In the light of this conflict only the eternal recurrence would offer the possibility of truly affirming life. …

New Insights Into The Roles Of Human Dna Damage Checkpoint Protein Atr In The Regulation Of Nucleotide Excision Repair And Dna Damage-Induced Cell Death, Zhengke Li Dec 2013

New Insights Into The Roles Of Human Dna Damage Checkpoint Protein Atr In The Regulation Of Nucleotide Excision Repair And Dna Damage-Induced Cell Death, Zhengke Li

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Integrity of the human genome is frequently threatened by endogenous and exogenous DNA damaging reagents that may lead to genome instability and cancer. Cells have evolved multiple mechanisms to repair DNA damage or to eliminate the damaged cells beyond repair and to prevent diverse diseases. Among these are ataxia telangiectasia and Rad3-related (ATR)-mediated DNA damage checkpoint and nucleotide excision repair (NER) that are the major pathways by which cells handle ultraviolet C (UV-C)- or other exogenous genotoxin-induced bulky DNA damage. However, it is unclear how these 2 pathways may be coordinated. In this study we show that ATR physically interacts …
