San Francisco's Embaradero Promenade: An In-Depth Look At How Design Elements Along The Waterfront Affect User Behavior, Jacqueline Vance
San Francisco's Embaradero Promenade: An In-Depth Look At How Design Elements Along The Waterfront Affect User Behavior, Jacqueline Vance
Master's Projects
This research project will observe user behavior at three sites along San Francisco’s Embarcadero Promenade in an attempt to better understand how urban design elements (e.g. seating or public art) can positively or negatively affect how people use a public space. The specific question that this research will attempt to address is: What aspects of physical design in three key areas along the Embarcadero Promenade influence user behavior within this linear public space and how is that behavior positively or negatively affected? Recommendations will also be provided, suggesting possible opportunities to improve the Embarcadero Promenade as a successful public space.

Laboratory Testing Of Railroad Flatcars For Use As Highway Bridges On Low-Volume Roads To Determine Ultimate Strength And Redundancy, Teresa L. Washeleski, Robert Connor, Jason B. Lloyd
Laboratory Testing Of Railroad Flatcars For Use As Highway Bridges On Low-Volume Roads To Determine Ultimate Strength And Redundancy, Teresa L. Washeleski, Robert Connor, Jason B. Lloyd
Indiana Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) Technical Reports
Railroad flatcars (RRFCs) are a convenient option to replace existing deteriorating bridge structures on low-volume roads. They are typically used as the bridge superstructure by placing two or more flatcars side-by-side to achieve the desired bridge width. Utilizing RRFCs as a bridge allows for rapid construction and greater cost savings compared to traditional practices. These benefits make them an attractive solution for rural communities in Indiana, as well as other states.
Uncertainty remains about the response under higher loads than could be easily achieved in the field and the level of redundancy of railroad flatcar bridges. Using RRFCs as bridges …
Intertextuality In Kurosawa's Film Adaptation Of Dostoevsky's The Idiot, Saera Yoon
Intertextuality In Kurosawa's Film Adaptation Of Dostoevsky's The Idiot, Saera Yoon
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article, "Intertextuality in Kurosawa's Film Adaptation of Dostoevsky's The Idiot" Saera Yoon analyzes the role intertextuality plays in the adjustments Akira Kurosawa made when he translated the classic novel by Dostoevsky onto screen. Kurosawa's 白痴 (Hakuchi), a film adaptation of Dostoevsky's The Idiot, has been the subject of mixed reviews. While some consider the film a successful adaptation that captures the spirit of the original, others criticize Hakuchi for its overly faithful rendition of the novel. What has been missing is an investigation of Kurosawa's filmic strategy. Yoon examines the transposition of a chronotope …
Male Same-Sex Desire In The Romances Of De Troyes, Basil A. Clark
Male Same-Sex Desire In The Romances Of De Troyes, Basil A. Clark
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Male Same-Sex Desire in the Romances of de Troyes" Basil A. Clark extends René Girard's theory of mimetic desire to explore a homocentric subtext in Chrétien de Troyes's Erec and Enide, Lancelot or The Knight of the Cart, The Knight with the Lion or Yvain, and The Story of the Grail or Perceval. While male same-sex desire in these narratives is consistently latent, an argument for its presence is made through Girard's hermeneutic, which postulates that someone (the subject) desires someone or something (the object) not only for its own sake but because …

Structural And Biochemical Characterization Of The Bilin Lyase Cpcs From Thermosynechococcus Elongatus, Wendy M. Schluchter
Structural And Biochemical Characterization Of The Bilin Lyase Cpcs From Thermosynechococcus Elongatus, Wendy M. Schluchter
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Cyanobacterial phycobiliproteins have evolved to capture light energy over most of the visible spectrum due to their bilin chromophores, which are linear tetrapyrroles that have been covalently attached by enzymes called bilin lyases. We report here the crystalstructure of a bilin lyase of the CpcS family from Thermosynechococcus elongatus (TeCpcS-III). TeCpcS-III is a 10-stranded beta barrel with two alpha helices and belongs to the lipocalin structural family. TeCpcS-III catalyzes both cognate as well as noncognate bilin attachment to a variety of phycobiliprotein subunits. TeCpcS-III ligates phycocyanobilin, phycoerythrobilin, and phytochromobilin to the alpha and beta subunits of allophycocyanin and to the …

A Simple Method For Estimation Of Queue Length, S. P. Anusha, Lelitha Devi Vanajakshi, Anuj Sharma
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications
Urban arterials are characterized by frequent intersections. Queue length and delay are the two primary measures of performance of intersection. These measures play a primary role in determining the arterial performance. This article presents a methodology to determine the number of vehicles in queue at a signalized intersection for under saturated traffic conditions. The results obtained were validated using actual values that are manually extracted. The root-mean-square error is of the range 1.3 vehicles for estimation of number of vehicles in queue. The various aspects that have to be considered in accurate estimation of performance measures are also discussed.

Identification Of Carbon Black Removed From Elastomeric Components In Contact With Potable Water., William Calvin Hunter 1989-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Monochloramine is primarily used as a disinfectant in the drinking water distribution industry. The degradation of styrene butadiene rubber (SBR), natural rubber (NR), and ethylene propylene diene monomer-peroxide cured (EPDM-P) by monochloramine was first reported in a study published by the American Water Works Association (AWWA) in 2007. The study exposed samples of various types of rubber, including SBR, NR, and EPDM-P, to monochloramine solutions at varying concentrations and temperatures for 30 days. This study provided the basis for the present research, as at the medium temperatures and concentrations used in the study, 45 °C and 30 parts per million …
An Improved Thin-Film Microelectrode Array And Signal Conditioning Board For Measuring Cardiac Surface Potentials., Christopher Hayward Osborne
An Improved Thin-Film Microelectrode Array And Signal Conditioning Board For Measuring Cardiac Surface Potentials., Christopher Hayward Osborne
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The work outlined in this thesis expanded on previous work to improve a thin-film microfabricated electrode array intended for cardiac electrophysiology studies. A thin layer of silver was added in between titanium and platinum electrical trace layers to reduce electrode resistance. A 200 nm layer of silver decreased electrode resistance by an order of magnitude. In addition, a new high quality signal conditioning board was developed using precision operational amplifiers from Texas Instruments. Both new sensor and board design were verified together through in vivo studies using rabbit, goat, and dog hearts.
Feasibility Of Using Computational Fluid Dynamics For Analysis Of Flow In An Orbiting Dish., Matthew R. Purcell
Feasibility Of Using Computational Fluid Dynamics For Analysis Of Flow In An Orbiting Dish., Matthew R. Purcell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The oscillatory flow provided by an orbital shaker table correlates somewhat to the pulsatile flow seen in the human vasculature. This parallel allows for the use of the orbital shaker table in a large range of biomedical research. However, the fluid dynamics is not well characterized in this system. This research employed the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) package FLUENT in an effort to better understand the fluid dynamics in an orbiting dish. This work was performed at low resolution as a first attempt to examine the fluid flow characteristics. The first objective was to determine the time required to reach …
Apical Left Ventricular Cannula Sutureless Implantation Development., Adam D. Scarsella
Apical Left Ventricular Cannula Sutureless Implantation Development., Adam D. Scarsella
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: Cannulation of the left ventricle (LV) apex is a common surgical procedure for aortic valve bypass and ventricular assist device (VAD) implantation. LV cannulation requires coring of the LV apex and attaching a sewing ring via suture. Although effective, suturing is time-consuming and apical coring can lead to bleeding complications or inflow occlusion. The scope of this project was to design a sutureless-anchoring device for an apical left ventricular (ALV) cannula system. Instrumentation, equipment, and procedures: The sutureless-anchoring device was designed as a conical spring. Five prototypes were fabricated with varying wire diameter (0.045”-0.055”), maximum cone diameter (0.85”-0.975”), and …
Pulsatile Flow Does Not Improve Efficacy In Ex Vivo Lung Perfusion., Keith A. Zoeller
Pulsatile Flow Does Not Improve Efficacy In Ex Vivo Lung Perfusion., Keith A. Zoeller
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Introduction Ex vivo lung perfusion (EVLP) has the potential to increase the donor pool for lung transplantation by facilitating extended evaluation of marginal organs. Current methodology employs continuous flow pumps for perfusion. In vivo, continuous flow has been shown to increase pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR). Thus, pulsatile flow EVLP may reduce PVR and improve organ preservation by providing physiologic flow morphology. Methods Lung blocks harvested from male, Yorkshire pigs were allocated into continuous (CF, n=3) and pulsatile flow (PF, n=4) groups. Lungs were ventilated at 4-5 mL/kg, 30% FiO2 and perfused with an acellular, albumin-based solution corrected for osmolarity, acid/base …
Face Recognition In The Wild., Mostafa A. Farag
Face Recognition In The Wild., Mostafa A. Farag
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Research in face recognition deals with problems related to Age, Pose, Illumination and Expression (A-PIE), and seeks approaches that are invariant to these factors. Video images add a temporal aspect to the image acquisition process. Another degree of complexity, above and beyond A-PIE recognition, occurs when multiple pieces of information are known about people, which may be distorted, partially occluded, or disguised, and when the imaging conditions are totally unorthodox! A-PIE recognition in these circumstances becomes really “wild” and therefore, Face Recognition in the Wild has emerged as a field of research in the past few years. Its main purpose …
Development And Verification Of Web-Based Bridge Monitoring Interface, Jason B. Lloyd, Robert J. Connor
Development And Verification Of Web-Based Bridge Monitoring Interface, Jason B. Lloyd, Robert J. Connor
JTRP Technical Reports
With the advancement of many off-the-shelf data acquisition systems readily available today and the availability of 3G and 4G high-speed wireless cellular networks, the potential for remote monitoring of critical bridges has never been better. Needs exist regarding scour and general structural response for long-term monitoring. However, short-term monitoring using quickly deployable, rugged systems are also desirable in cases where impact, fire, environmental effects, or other damage may occur. These robust systems can be deployed rapidly, and endure harsh elements, enabling DOTs to constantly assess and monitor a structure, or a network of structures. Hence, the objective of this project …

Is First, They Killed My Father A Cambodian Testimonio?, John Maddox
Is First, They Killed My Father A Cambodian Testimonio?, John Maddox
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Is First, They Killed My Father a Cambodian testimonio" John T. Maddox discusses aspects of the testimonial. Dialoguing with leading Latin Americanists, Maddox argues that Cambodian writer Loung Ung's First, They Killed My Father (2000) challenges this uniqueness and opens studies on the testimonio to new possibilities for intellectual reflection and political activism. In Maddox's view, the continued use of the term testimonio would serve as a reference to this long-standing tradition of writing and thinking about political violence in Latin America. After a discussion of the debate of the definition and function of testimonio and …
