Pedagogical Approaches To "Down By The Riverside" And "Winnsboro Cotton Mill Blues" From North American Ballads By Frederic Rzewski, Sun Jung Lee Dec 2013

Pedagogical Approaches To "Down By The Riverside" And "Winnsboro Cotton Mill Blues" From North American Ballads By Frederic Rzewski, Sun Jung Lee

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

"Down by the Riverside" and "Winnsboro Cotton Mill Blues," by Frederic Rzewski (1937 - present), are the third and fourth ballads, respectively, of the four that comprise his North American Ballads, completed in 1979. These two pieces are often performed together, without the first two ballads, perhaps because they seem to appeal to a wider audience, due to Rzewski's incorporation of familiar musical elements including folk music, jazz, blues, and improvisation.;These are impressive works which require a high level of skill from the pianist; this may also contribute to the frequency with which they are programmed for performance in recitals …

The Nature Of Distributed Research: Narratives Of Shifting Experience, Jingjing Zhang Dec 2013

The Nature Of Distributed Research: Narratives Of Shifting Experience, Jingjing Zhang

Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE)

Distributed work over geographical distance is not new, but this century has witnessed a rapid extension of this kind of work (Juan, Daradoumis, Roca, Grasman, & Faulin, 2012). In academia, it seems that the use of many technologies has inevitably led to an increasing trend of distributed research. In an attempt to explore this phenomenon, a qualitative study involving 24 senior researchers was conducted, and their lived and told stories illustrated that they worked together privately and publicly, informally and formally, with a high degree of reciprocity and with written records of their discourse. All forms of research activities, mediated …

A Matter Of Interest: Illinois Courts Should Return To The Traditional Rule For Awarding Prejudgment Interest In Insurance Coverage Cases, Stanley C. Nardoni Dec 2013

A Matter Of Interest: Illinois Courts Should Return To The Traditional Rule For Awarding Prejudgment Interest In Insurance Coverage Cases, Stanley C. Nardoni

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

Without acknowledging their departure from precedent, Illinois Appellate Court decisions have recently shifted from treating prejudgment interest as a matter of right for money owed under insurance policies to something within trial court discretion.  This shift is unwelcome for several reasons.  First, it contravenes the terms of Illinois’ Interest Act, which says creditors “shall be allowed to receive” prejudgment interest for “all” moneys due on any “instrument of writing.”   It also frustrates that statute’s purpose of compensating for the time value of money owed under written contracts.  Further, it is in conflict with Illinois Supreme Court decisions that have applied …

The Role Of Government In Energy Markets: A Look At The Market-Based Rates Process, The Ferc, And The Future Of Energy Markets In America, Andrew Laquet Dec 2013

The Role Of Government In Energy Markets: A Look At The Market-Based Rates Process, The Ferc, And The Future Of Energy Markets In America, Andrew Laquet

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

It is often argued that markets can solve anything, and market-based policies have steadily crept into many of the policies that affect our everyday lives, especially when it comes to energy regulation.  For years, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has increasingly used a market-based rates strategy to spur investment in energy infrastructure.

However, market-based rate policies have been wholly inadequate to spur this investment in infrastructure, particularly in transmission infrastructure and promoting efficiency, and alternative approaches should be used to accomplish these goals.  This Comment will take a look at the history and theoretical underpinnings of market-based rates before …

Silencing The Rebel Yell: Exceptions To The First Amendment After Defoe Ex Rel. Defoe V. Spiva, 625 F.3d 324 (6th Cir. 2010), Alexandra Brown Dec 2013

Silencing The Rebel Yell: Exceptions To The First Amendment After Defoe Ex Rel. Defoe V. Spiva, 625 F.3d 324 (6th Cir. 2010), Alexandra Brown

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

One of the central tenets of the First Amendment is the freedom of speech.  However, the Supreme Court has consistently held the First Amendment does not provide the same protections for minors’ speech in public school as it does for adult speech.  Recently, the Sixth Circuit further limited the protections provided to student speech in Defoe ex rel. Defoe v. Spiva.  This Note examines the decision in Defoe ex rel. Defoe v. Spiva and argues that the decision was incorrect because it deviated from long-standing Supreme Court precedent and erroneously created a new standard that was left undefined. This …

Use Of Polymer Rapid Tools As Functional Injection Mold Tooling, Sean Derrick Dec 2013

Use Of Polymer Rapid Tools As Functional Injection Mold Tooling, Sean Derrick

Masters Theses

Conventional tool making for injection molded plastics is expensive, time consuming, and generates a great deal of waste. Presently, industry is waiting for what is commonly referred to as Rapid Tooling (RT). The greatest opportunity for RT implementation would be the use of Additively Manufacturing (AM) technology. Specifically, AM techniques which use a high strength polymer resin substrate.

The following research is an initial feasibility study to determine if Polymer Rapid Tools (PRTs) could be used as functional injection mold tooling. The objective of the research was to determine if a PRT could mold a variety of features to a …

Yea Or Neigh? The Economics, Ethics, And Utility Of The Horsemeat Filet, L. Leon Geyer, Dan Lawler Dec 2013

Yea Or Neigh? The Economics, Ethics, And Utility Of The Horsemeat Filet, L. Leon Geyer, Dan Lawler

Journal of Food Law & Policy

While staying surprisingly low profile amongst the general populace, the issue of horse slaughter has become hotly contested in the last decade, evolving into a multifaceted controversy that intertwines questions regarding ethics, international commerce, and contemporary law and politics. Horses were slaughtered in the U.S. in United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) regulated plants until 2007, when an appropriations bill suspended funding for federal inspections of horsemeat. The U.S. was home to three domestic slaughterhouses - two in Texas and one in Illinois - that slaughtered an average of about 115,003 horses per year from 1990 to 2007. Currently, American …

Wonderment : Chinese Ink Paintings / Video / Projection / Installation / Soundscape, Anna Glynn Dec 2013

Wonderment : Chinese Ink Paintings / Video / Projection / Installation / Soundscape, Anna Glynn

Artists-in-Residence Programme : Exhibition Catalogues

A major component of Wonderment is the first showing of work done as part of my multimedia MEOAW Project: My Extraordinary Onomatopoeic Animal World. Onomatopoeic words mimic the sounds they represent; the sound of the word imitates the sound the object makes. The words are creations of our human minds and in different cultures and languages the words for the same sounds differ. The Lingnan University community responded enthusiastically to my call for volunteers to participate in the MEAOW project. I have spent many happy hours collecting and recording sound and video from members of this wonderful, culturally-diverse population.

Narcotic Administration And Fall-Related Injury In The Hospital: Implications For Patient Safety Programs And Providers, J Rush Pierce Jr, M Shirley, E F. Johnson, H Kang Dec 2013

Narcotic Administration And Fall-Related Injury In The Hospital: Implications For Patient Safety Programs And Providers, J Rush Pierce Jr, M Shirley, E F. Johnson, H Kang

Hospital Medicine

Objective: Identify factors that predict fall-related injury in hospitalized adults. Design: Retrospective cohort study. Setting: 435-bed university hospital. Participants: Inpatients with reported falls in 2010. Results: Medical records were available for 286/293 (98%) of reported falls in 251 patients. 25% (63/286) of falls were associated with injury, 4% (11/286) with serious injury. Compared to all fallers, patients with injury did not differ by gender or age. In univariate analysis, patients who reported hitting their head, had pre-fall confusion, or who received narcotics within 24 hours before falling were more likely to suffer injury (estimated odds ratios 6.04, 2.00 and 5.1, …

Random Search Models Of Foraging Behavior: Theory, Simulation, And Observation, Ben C. Nolting Dec 2013

Random Search Models Of Foraging Behavior: Theory, Simulation, And Observation, Ben C. Nolting

Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Many organisms, from bacteria to primates, use stochastic movement patterns to find food. These movement patterns, known as search strategies, have recently be- come a focus of ecologists interested in identifying universal properties of optimal foraging behavior. In this dissertation, I describe three contributions to this field. First, I propose a way to extend Charnov's Marginal Value Theorem to the spatially explicit framework of stochastic search strategies. Next, I describe simulations that compare the efficiencies of sensory and memory-based composite search strategies, which involve switching between different behavioral modes. Finally, I explain a new behavioral analysis protocol for identifying the …
