Daily Mood-Drinking Slopes As Predictiors: A New Take On Drinking Motives And Related Outcomes, Cynthia D. Mohr, Deborah L. Brannan, Staci Jean Wendt, Laurie Marie Jacobs, Robert Randon Wright, Mo Wang Dec 2013

Daily Mood-Drinking Slopes As Predictiors: A New Take On Drinking Motives And Related Outcomes, Cynthia D. Mohr, Deborah L. Brannan, Staci Jean Wendt, Laurie Marie Jacobs, Robert Randon Wright, Mo Wang

Psychology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Motivational models of alcohol consumption have articulated the manner in which positive and negative experiences motivate drinking in unique social contexts (e.g., Cooper, Frone, Russell & Mudar, 1995). Daily process methodology, in which daily events, moods and drinking behaviors are reported daily or multiple times per day, has been used to examine behavioral patterns that are consistent with discrete motivations. We advance the notion that repeated patterns of drinking in various social contexts as a function of positive or negative mood increases can provide evidence of individual-level if-then drinking signatures, which in turn can predict drinking-related outcomes. The purpose of …

An Efficient Preconditioning Scheme For Eigenanalysis Of Inhomogeneously Loaded Rectangular Cavities, Qi I. Dai, Yat Hei Lo, Lijun Jiang, Weng Cho Chew Dec 2013

An Efficient Preconditioning Scheme For Eigenanalysis Of Inhomogeneously Loaded Rectangular Cavities, Qi I. Dai, Yat Hei Lo, Lijun Jiang, Weng Cho Chew

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An efficient preconditioning scheme for the eigenanalysis of inhomogeneously loaded rectangular cavities is presented. Such structures are modeled with the finite-difference frequency-domain (FDFD) method, while the desired interior eigen-spectra are sought for by Arnoldi iterations with the shiftand-invert operation. In large scale problems, the inversion can only be performed iteratively. A preconditioner is constructed in order to accelerate the inversion. It can effectively shrink the spectrum of the governing matrix, and can be solved for by using fast discrete sine and cosine transforms (DST's and DCT's). The efficiency of this scheme is demonstrated by several numerical examples. © 2013 IEEE.

An Enhanced Mixed-Form Fast Multipole Algorithm Using Rotation Methods, Ling Ling Meng, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang Dec 2013

An Enhanced Mixed-Form Fast Multipole Algorithm Using Rotation Methods, Ling Ling Meng, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, the broadband accuracy of the mixed-form fast multipole algorithm (MF-FMA) is improved by applying rotation techniques. Two kinds of rotation methods are employed respectively. One is the coordinate system rotation technique. The other one is the pseudospectral projection based on fast Fourier transform (FFT). Either of them has certain advantages depending on the number of multipoles. Through rotation, translation matrices become very sparse, which enables us to save the storage as well as the CPU time. Hence, we can increase the number of multipoles in the low frequency regime to shift up the transition region of MF-FMA. …

Evaluating Economic Impacts Of Switchgrass Harvest Time, Nathanial Elsworth Cahill Dec 2013

Evaluating Economic Impacts Of Switchgrass Harvest Time, Nathanial Elsworth Cahill

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis deals with cost of production for cellulosic energy crops of switchgrass, miscanthus, and energy sorghum. The first chapter explains the rationale for development of decision support software called Energy Crop Analysis & Planning (ENCAP) and Switchgrass Harvest Date, Yield, Nutrient Removal Estimator (SHYNE). The second chapter examines harvest date implications on yield, nutrient removal, opportunity cost of modified sale dates, and post-harvest storage losses. This harvest date analysis leads to a profit maximizing harvest date from the perspective of the producer. While this harvest date may be optimal for the producer, biorefineries may be interested in sourcing switchgrass …

The Effects Of Social Contextual Factors On Rater Motivation And Performance Ratings, Emilija Djurdjevic Dec 2013

The Effects Of Social Contextual Factors On Rater Motivation And Performance Ratings, Emilija Djurdjevic

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Performance appraisal research (e.g., Longenecker, Sims, & Gioia, 1987; Wang, Wong, & Kwong, 2010) suggests that inaccuracies in performance ratings are largely a result of intentional rating distortion, or rater motivation. Researchers have noted that raters sometimes have multiple and conflicting goals when providing performance ratings (e.g., Murphy, Cleveland, Kinney, Skattebo, Newman, & Sin, 2003). According to rater goal theory (e.g., Cleveland & Murphy, 1992), rater goals are influenced by the performance appraisal context, mediating the relationship between the context of performance appraisal and performance ratings. Studies suggest that the context affects performance ratings, but conceptualizations of the performance appraisal …

Development Of Novel Antifungal Peptides Based On A Natural Model Of Histatin-5 Peptide, Duy Tu Nguyen

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Our research group is working toward the development of novel antifungal peptides based on a natural model of peptide histatin-5. Histatin-5 is found in human saliva and known to protect our body against oral infections by Candida species. Candidiasis, or an infection caused by Candida species, is considered one of the most medically important fungal infections worldwide. Blood stream infections caused by Candida species are the fourth leading cause of hospital-acquired fungal infections that is associated with high mortality rates and high costs of treatment. This study investigated the modes of action of histatin-5 with the use of one 16-mer …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Testicular atrophy is a major cause of culling in boars. Pathogenesis of this change is poorly understood. Therefore, we aimed to investigate pathological changes of the genital tracts of culled boars with testicular atrophy. Twenty-eight genital organs of culled boars collected from slaughter houses in Thailand were pathologically examined. According to testicular weight, the organs were allocated into 4 groups: severe atrophy (n = 12), moderate atrophy (n = 4), mild atrophy (n = 4), and normal control (n = 8). In the severe atrophic group, the mean weight of atrophic testes (175.1 ± 51 g) was lower than those …

Analysis Of Mirna-29a Expression In Porcine Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells Using Quantitative Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction, Sunaree Nantakhruea, Porntippa Lekcharoensuk, Win Surachetpong

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non coding RNA that regulate gene expression as post transcriptional regulators in mammalian tissues. One of the miRNAs that participates in mammalian immune response is miR-29a. Despite the limited information of miR-29a in porcine cells, it is interesting to determine whether miR-29a involves in immune regulation in pig. In this study, we developed a quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction using SYBR detection system to examine the expression of primary miR-29a (pri-miR-29a) in porcine peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) in the presence of mitogen. PBMCs were stimulated with concanavalin A (Con A) at a concentration of …

Creating Spaces For Critical Transformative Dialogues: Legitimising Discussion Groups As Professional Practice, Christine J. Edwards-Groves Dec 2013

Creating Spaces For Critical Transformative Dialogues: Legitimising Discussion Groups As Professional Practice, Christine J. Edwards-Groves

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Focussed dialogue (as lived and living practices) can have a powerful role in renewing professional practice, advancing its sustainability and development as administrative and political systems colonise the practices of teachers and teacher educators. However, participating in discussion groups for many teachers, including those in academia, is often constrained by time demands, workplace structures and accountabilities. This paper reports a two year empirical case study investigating the transformative nature of dialogues experienced in one such focused discussion group. The dialogic practices of the group aimed firstly to provide a communicative space for its participants to interrogate and interpret factors …

Pre-Service Teachers’ Attitudes Towards Overseas Professional Experience: Implications For Professional Practice, Mohan Chinnappan, Barbra Mckenzie, Phil Fitzsimmons Dec 2013

Pre-Service Teachers’ Attitudes Towards Overseas Professional Experience: Implications For Professional Practice, Mohan Chinnappan, Barbra Mckenzie, Phil Fitzsimmons

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Reforms in Australia about the education of future teachers has placed a high degree of emphasis on the development of knowledge and skills that are necessary for practitioners who will ply their trade in culturally rich and diverse classrooms (Ramsey, 2000). There is now a broad consensus from key stakeholders (Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership, 2012) that pre-service teachers need to be provided with a range of opportunities that are grounded in classroom practices including exposure to teaching students overseas. The aim of the study that is reported here is to better understand the skills and knowledge that …
